Single Dads R Us

Esteban and I went to brunch after our lovely stay in the lovely inn with a fireplace, jacuzzi, and a view of the water. We went to Country Kitchen simply because Esteban’s butt hurt from riding in the car more than ten minutes and Country Kitchen wasn’t overly packed.

Little beknownst to us, Country Kitchen is where divorced dads take their kids to eat breakfast. I counted no less than four sets of fathers with unruly pissed off children eating questionably nutritious things. Directly next to us sat a man with his twelve-year-old pissed off son (Nigel was his name) and his two identical twin one-year-old boys, Collin and Cole, identically dressed in lime green, navy blue, and yellow striped jumpers. Yes, they were dressed as putridly as it sounds. This is why I think he was divorced or separated. Besides the contempt eminating from the 12-year-old and the way that the dad had no clue how to handle the twin toddlers, I cannot see a dad letting his two boys be dressed that way if he had a choice about it. Maybe this is sexist of me. Maybe not. Sometimes women, when left to their own devices, come up with some horribly tacky ideas of what is “cute” and inflict them upon children if they are allowed. But then, maybe the garrish outfits allow for immediate spotting of errant children in crowds. I’m not a parent, so I really shouldn’t make these judgements, I guess.

Anyway, they had finished eating and the father proceeded to take one twin, let’s say his name was Cole for sake of argument, to the bathroom to clean off his hands (having eaten his entire pancake with syrup with his little fingers, he might as well have been bathed in boysenberry syrup). Nigel was supposed to be watching Collin, but instead decided to go up to the buffet and make himself an itty bitty bagel. Luckily for Nigel, Collin was flirting quite heavily with me. I have a baby flirt face, I don’t know what it is. Any children under the age of three who find themselves temporarily motherless gravitate toward me. One time a father had to grab his little girl who was following me to our car and then she cried because she wanted to go with me. Hey, thank your lucky stars that I was given this “Catnip for Babies” face, because what would happen if a child molester got it? Huh?

So anyway, Collin was humming Barry White, trying to seduce me to approach his table and possibly tickle him until he urped, when finally, the Dad came back from the restroom and swapped Cole for Collin, and he yelled at Nigel for not watching Collin. Cole proceeded to eat a menu and Dad returned with Collin.

He turned to take the menu away from Cole when Collin immediately dunked his hands into a plate of syrup. The dad sighed heavily. He looked at his sullen son, then his menu-eating son, and then finally his sticky son. One could almost read his thoughts at that moment. I just washed his hands, he couldn’t be too sticky already. His hands were only in the syrup for a second. That’s under the five second rule.

Then he did something I cannot ever imagine a woman doing (and this is not necessarily a bad thing, mind you).

He stuck Collin’s hand entirely in his own mouth and tried to lick the syrup off. Collin was agog. This was all new. The dad then gave his son’s hand a few more licks and then sighed. He hefted his son again and made another trip to the bathroom. Three trips, two kids.

If I never stick a child’s sticky hand in my mouth, people, it will be too soon.

Incidentally, it just so happens that the actual room that we stayed in (room 104) is available for 360 touring on the above web page… it’s the deck suite. You can’t see the snazzy bathroom, though… it was almost again the size of the room. It is a very cool inn… it was a mill that they converted/revamped. A little tributary of the Fox River actually runs underneath the inn and came out under the deck of our room (as you can see in the virtual tour). Ducks woke me up on Saturday morning. I suppose it’s better than a cat.

Is that a piece of wood in your pants or are you just glad to see me?

So Thursday.

I had to work late and I was going to meet a bunch of people at the local Sports Bar #113, where they would be having Karaoke. Esteban eschews karaoke, feeling embarrassed for the people who sing poorly, but he decided to meet me for dinner at #113 before the Karaoke commenced, being that I hadn’t seen him in two days due to my work schedule and his frivolity schedule.

So Esteban and I eat dinner at the sports bar/restaurant. During this time, Esteban chastises me because I sent out an email inviting only SOME of our friends to Karaoke and not all 23 friends. You see, we are part of a very tight knit ‘group’ of friends which started with a core bunch of five guys, then added myself when I started to date Esteban way back, then a few more guys added to the mix, then gradually the rest of them started adding girlfriends and the like and a few more guys got added’ now it’s really no longer classifiable as a group. I think it’s a throng. A throng or possible a melee. Maybe we’re a gang. Anyway, at one time, when it was just a small little tiny group, you always made certain that you invited everyone, but now the ‘group’ is ginornous and its nearly impossible to do group activities. Nor should it be expected, in my opinion. In the past, there have been many activities that Esteban and I have not been invited to and we have organized events where we have not invited everyone. But there’s a fine line’ for instance, if we want to do something with two couples from the group, suddenly we are the subject of hurt looks from the remaining couples in the group. Apparently, there’s a ration which must be maintained. If we do something with only one couple, we do not have to invite every couple’ but if we do something with two couples, now we really should have invited the other three married couples because they will be hurt. I wish someone would write down the rules for me.

Within the group, there are sub groups. There’s a subgroup that goes out and plays darts. There’s another subgroup that goes out to the movies together. There’s another subgroup that plays D&D. And, more recently, since Joel, Cheri & I have being going to karaoke; there is a Karaoke subgroup, consisting of the three of us plus instances where several other people have attended with us. It’s usually spontaneous, though, more or less spur of the moment. Usually we have one or two of the single guys with us and have had two of the couples with us as well. Thus, I didn’t really think about the entire dynamics of group activities when I sent an email inviting only the past Karaoke attendees to Karaoke. But apparently, the non-invited were hurt. Never mind that they always had major scorn for Karaoke in the past. Never mind that they wouldn’t want to come because it was a weeknight and they are homebodies. Instead of inviting select members, Esteban told me that it looked to everyone like I was EXCLUDING certain members of the group on purpose and it didn’t matter what the real reason was, it was how it looked to the givers of the hurt looks which was important.

So that was dinner: learning that I was now personae non grata due to my selective Karaoke inviting. Then one of the couples comes in with an additional non-‘group’ couple. They find a nice large table to sit at, but it needs to be wiped off. I plop my stuff onto a chair and then we stood there for tens of minutes, waiting for the wait staff to clean off the table. Finally, they come and begin to wipe it off and I sat down on the chair.

Pain. Seething pain in my ass. I thought that maybe I had sat upon a knife. I reached back and realized that I was actually stuck to the chair. I unhooked my clothing, but there was still pain. That’s when I felt my bottom and found a huge splinter sticking out of my butt.

I grabbed Esteban and pulled him rather reluctantly into the Ladies Bathroom, where I pulled down my pants and said, ‘Get it out!’ It hurt so badly! Esteban didn’t know what to do and was quite useless. He apparently was reliving childhood trauma by being in the women’s bathroom. He quickly snapped the splinter out and said, ‘There, it’s out’ and then fled the bathroom. I looked down at the rug, expecting to see a barbed hunk of wood the size of a drumstick’ instead an inch long piece of wood was lying there, thick as a toothpick. My ass hurt tremendously. I tried looking in the mirror to see if he had gotten it all out, but then two girls came into the bathroom, so I just hiked up my drawers and went back out.

‘Well, THAT was embarrassing.’ Esteban said, referring to being caught by the girls coming out of the Ladies Room.

‘Oh, yeah,’ I said, wincing from pain. ‘My heart bleeds for you.’

I went back and sat down, figuring that my ass would stop hurting in a bit. I looked at the chair’ a huge nick was taken out of the back of the seat’ another splinter waited to pick someone. I sat in a different chair. Later, Scott came in and did a little woodworking on the chair with his pocketknife. It bit him too’ but he got his splinter in his thumb.

I sang a few songs, but the whole time, I was feeling as though I still had subcutaneous wood going on in my ass. Cheri arrived later and I almost pulled her back into the bathroom to say, ‘Do me a favor and see if there’s something in my ass.’ But no matter how many times I mentally rehearsed that sentence, it just seemed to breach so many of the boundaries of friendship. While I’m certain Cheri would have gladly taken a look at my ass for me, undoubtedly it would give her nightmares for many nights to come.

I left and drove myself home. While the Monte is generally a smooth ride, I felt every crack and pebble on the highway. I got home and Esteban was up watching television. I ran into the bathroom and said, ‘Come and look at my ass.’ Esteban wanted me to bring my ass to him in the dark living room. ‘Don’t you think it would be better for you to look at it where it is light?’ I said, frantic from pain. Grudgingly, he got up and wandered into the bathroom where he suddenly became very interested in the backs of my calves. Now, I understand that I have some impressive calves; the point should be mentioned here that there was nothing fucking wrong with my calves and my calves were not driving me to the edge of insanity at that point. ‘LOOK AT MY FUCKING ASS GODDAMNIT!’ I screamed.

Esteban grudgingly looked. Out came the Tweezerman. Then out came a safety pin. Still nothing. Esteban confirmed however that there was a sizable piece of wood still in the skin, but he couldn’t get it and I’d have to go to the doctor.

I threw my clothing back on and jumped in the car, speeding toward the hospital. I got to the emergency room and walked to triage.

‘I’ve got a splinter stuck in my skin.’

‘In your hand?’

‘No.’ I looked back at a waiting room full of men who were watching my intently.

‘In your foot?’

‘No.’ One man was craning his neck to listen. Two guys were joking intently.

‘Where is it?’ the nurse asked crankily.

If I said it quietly, everyone would hear and then chuckle to himself. I decided to come out of the closet about my ass splinter.

‘IN MY ASS!!!’ I said loudly.

She immediately took me into the emergency room. Apparently, they do not tally with a woman with something in her ass. Wise choice because at that point, I wasn’t about to take shit from anyone. I had something in my ass and I wasn’t putting up with anything.

I lay down on my stomach on the gurney and the registration nurse came in.

‘Name?’ ‘Weetabix.’ She made a ‘I can’t find it’ face. ‘Have you been here before?’ ‘Yes’ I think they’ve got it under Esteban’s name though for some reason.’ ‘Ah yes, here it is’ she nods. That reminded me of how much that pisses me off. ‘Before I was married, I was my own person. Now, even though I am the patient and even though the insurance is in my name, my records are now under my husband’s name! That’s sexist bullshit!’ The registration lady raised her eyes at my choice of words, but then agreed with me that it was sexists. I continued to rant about subcutaneous sexism while she took my information. She probably thought I was drunk (I hadn’t touched anything other than Diet 7-up all night, so I didn’t even have the advantage of caffeine going for me).

Finally, a guy in a white coat came in. ‘This is Howard and he’ll be removing your splinter.’

Howard???? Howard??? I don’t have Dr. Somebody, I get a Howard?? How creepy is that when you’re lying on a gurney with your pierced ass up in the air with an incredibly bright spotlight shining down on it, having HOWARD pull down your pants and feel up your butt?

Howard gave me a shot of Lidocain. This is the third time I’ve had the dubious pleasure of being numbed by Lidocain and let me tell you, it sucks. Lidocain blows ass. It hurts ALMOST as much as whatever you’re having done. They stick you with that shit and the worse part is knowing that the shot hurts LESS than what they’re shooting into your skin. Luckily, eventually the stinging goes away as the area becomes numb.

Howard worked on my ass for a good fifteen minutes while Esteban held my hand and looked away. Esteban hates needles and blood and pokey things, lots of which were evident during Howard’s little venture into the Weetabix booty. In fact, at some point, I think I was holding Esteban’s hand for Esteban, not the other way around.

Finally, Howard got the splinter out. Esteban says (skip if you’ve got a squeamish stomach, but then you’ve made it this far so how bad could it be?) that Howard stuck pointy things into the splinter entry point and then lifted the skin up and slid the sliver out. I knew at the time that it had to have been bad, because Esteban squeezed my hand and cringed. Then Howard complimented me on my shapely behind and slapped a bandage on my butt. I asked for a Little Mermaid bandage but they didn’t have any.

Then I pulled my pants up and left. With a sore ass. Man, did my butt hurt! Esteban’s butt still hurts from two weeks ago and so now we’re a matching pair of pains in the ass.

The next morning, we brought my emergency room papers and little 6 millimeters long splinter to Sports Bar #113 to fill out an incident report. The manager was an ass. ‘Do you want to see what chair it was?’ ‘No, we’ll just leave another patron’s fine derriere to become pierced like a punk rocker.’ Bastard. He didn’t even say ‘Sorry’ or ‘Are you ok?’ or anything.

After stopping by the bar, we stopped at the cell phone place to get Esteban a new phone. He has actually worn his out after a year. Amazing. I waited in the car for what seemed like an eternity, and then I got out and wandered into a jewelry store. Esteban joined me later, while I was drooling over a strand of dove gray pearls.

‘Aren’t those lovely?’ I asked him, when he came in. ‘How much are they?’ He asked the weasel who was lingering nearby. Jewelry Weasel sneered at us, with our goofy comfortable clothes and unkempt appearances and told us the price, bringing them out of the case for me to take a closer look.

I put them around my neck to see what they looked like. The strand was too short for me, but they were a lovely set, I mentioned. ‘We’d have to order a longer one.’ Weasel Man said.

‘Order it.’ Esteban said.

‘Wh-wh-what?’ I was incredulous. I had just stopped in to waste time while I was waiting for Esteban. I had never intended on actually purchasing anything in the snooty jewelry store. ‘We can’t get that? Why would we get that?’

‘Order it, please.’ Esteban said again to the Weasel Man who looked uncertain.

‘It’s not a birthday present. It’s not an anniversary present. It’s not a Christmas present.’

‘It’s an ass splinter present.’ Esteban said, giving me a kiss on the nose.

I will give Esteban credit here. The fastest way to make pain forgotten is not aspirin, not codeine, not anything pharmaceutical–It’s jewelry. Fine jewelry.

A 20-inch strand of dove gray pearls delivered in two weeks, to be exact. I love my Ass Splinter present!

Teeehee!!!

100% Anthrax free… also free of Slayer, WASP and Ratt too

Once upon a time, there was a little girl who was funny and bright and loved to read 19th century English literature. She wandered through her eclectic little life quite happily, flitting from book to book, occasionally making failed attempts at emulating Martha Stewart. Then one day, she picked up a new book, a children’s book. ‘Harry Potter?’ she said, inquisitively. ‘I’ll give it a go.’ She predicted that she would become exasperated with the writing within twenty pages, but wanted to see what all of the fuss was about.

Four books later, she’s a drooling, psycho maniac. When, oh when will the next book come out!!!

Six months, people. Six freaking months before J.K. decides to earn another million dollar check from Scholastic Books. The woman is the second richest woman in England. I suppose the Queen is the richest. I’m not entirely certain. Levontaun had it right’ let’s all go and break into her house to read her manuscript.

Damn her. Damn her Muggle ass all to hell.

Radio Shack: You’ve got questions’We’ve got blank stares.

Last night, I ended up stuck on the telephone with some guy in California, where it was not 6:45 at night, but rather 4:45 p.m. and he had all the time in the world. And I think he was smoking ganga as we were trying to fix his program. He was totally laid back. I think I could have said ‘And now pick up your pc and hurl it violently out the window.’ And he would have said, ‘Um, yeah, I’m going to have to put the phone down for a minute’.’ And then I’d hear the sound of his pc being brought to the window while Dells and Compaqs on the street below yelled, ‘Jump!’

Maybe I should go work for Radio Shack instead.

Has Friends now become so lame it needs its own handicapped parking spot at the Lame Sitcom Hall of Fame? It seems as though once the cast got their $100,000 an episode per Friend, they got lazy. Or maybe it’s the writing. I used to watch the show because I could see myself in the characters, could see my friends in the characters. They used to be people I’d want to hang around with, but now they’re mainly people who belong in a group home for socially inept losers.

I think they’re just caricatures of their characters now. Monica used to have a level head on her shoulders, but now she’s the loud, obsessive-compulsive controlling one. Joey used to have a slight problem with being ditzy, but he could hold his one. Now he’s become a one-trick pony wearing a big sign stating ‘Hey, I’m the dumb one’ how you doin’???’ Could Chandler BE any more sarcastic? Esteban can’t even watch Ross anymore because he’s such a complete loser that he’s embarrassed for him.

Also, the end is, unfortunately, in sight. Now that Chandler and Monica have hooked up and the permanent pairing of Ross and Rachel is imminent, will Phoebe and Joey follow suit? Well, duh.

I’m watching Survivor instead. Someone tell me if Monica stops acting like a scary, skinny freak.

I do have to note, however, that the Paste Pants episode was brilliant. Pure comedic brilliance.

Robert Altman, director of such forgotten films as Mash and Nashville is blaming the terrorist attacks on the movies. Without naming names such as Jerry Bruckheimer and Die Hard, he lambasted the movie industry by stating “The movies set the pattern, and these people have copied the movies.” Incidentally, the FBI has recently uncovered a plot by the Taliban to collapse the walls of Sally Kellerman’s bathroom while she is showering and then they’re going to build a man who has scissors instead of hands. The Taliban declined to comment, as they were busy taking turns being John Malkovich.

It’s here! It’s here! It’s here!

Glory be, today is the day.

Today is the day that my town gains its own center of beatnik culture.

Da da da DA!!!!!!!!!

Barnes & Noble!

I finally got to leave work today for lunch at 2:30 in the freaking afternoon. Good thing I was able to gnaw on that intern for a while or I would have been a bit growly.

The place was packed. I had been thinking that perhaps I was the only person in town, other than the Barnes & Noble employees, who knew of the store’s existence. This was not the case. A news crew blocked the entrance with their tripods. The caf’ was brewing with activity.

I mosied around, lingering only to brush my hand longingly over Michael Ondaatje as he whispered to me promises of long afternoons, just he and I together. Then Oscar Wilde yoo-hooed madly at me from behind another stack, telling me to ignore that Ondaatje loser and have fun with him.

There’s still a bit of strangeness with this new B&N, though. For instance, in the periodicals section, scattered betwixt the issues of Ploughshares, GlimmerTrain, and Paris Review sit the Reader’s Digest with smiling Tim Allen on the cover. That’s like taking a fine souffl’ and barfing a hairball right in the center. Also, I noticed that they gave Chicken Soup for the Soul books their own sections. I guess I can’t blame them for that one. I’m thinking that all the other sections wouldn’t have anything to do with them.

The people of the city of Green Bay don’t seem to know what to do with a big book store. I saw a man wearing a John Deere cap, wandering around looking for Don DeLillio. That was strange. But then, eventually the people who are just checking out the place will dwindle away and it will be left to those of us who are snobby readers.

I should really find another hobby.

Oh, and I burnt the hell out of my tongue with their Blackberry and Sage tea. I don’t think the baristas really have the hang of it yet.

The computer you are dialing cannot connect

Oooh, I found a place to stay for this weekend! Ok, it’s not in Door County, but it has the hot tub, a fireplace, and a deck overlooking the water. So the plan will be to drive up to Door County on Friday and tool around there, then come back to town, do a book shopping spree at our new Barnes & Noble and then retire to the hotel where we will sip wine and lounge by our fireplace. Then Saturday, we’ll go antiquing.

I’m working four ten-hour shifts this week, which is nice because I have Friday off and don’t have to burn a vacation day, but it also sucks for the four days where I am working all the time. I need sleep for about nine to ten hours in the fall/winter months and when I’m at work for eleven hours (including the hour lunch), that leaves about three hours for essentials like showering, eating, pooping, and driving to and from work. Last night, I walked through our front door fifteen minutes into Buffy. Esteban, however, fulfilled his role as Most Perfect Husband In The World when he had the television on and a pizza keeping warm in the oven, which he then plopped in front of me.

I have an acquaintance that stays at home with her child. Honestly, she acts as though she is a supreme martyr for sacrificing her career for the well being of her child, but she has actually never aspired to do anything other than sit on her butt. I don’t know what she does during the day, particularly since her newborn sleeps three out of four hours of the day. Apparently, she is still demanding equal separation of housework and childcare when her husband is home, too.

You know, I’m the first person to admit that I’m a feminist, but that pisses me off. Not so much that she stays home, but she’s using her child as an excuse to be lazy. If one parent is staying home, they should be doing an equal amount of work as the one who is gone 45 hours a week. I don’t care which gender stays home. It’s a partnership and you shouldn’t suck your partner dry in the name of ‘equality’. Sounds pretty uneven to me. I’m totally behind having a parent totally devoted to raising their child or children at home, but, hell, be reasonable. It’s a privilege to get to be such a big part of your child’s life. The person who has to work already has to miss out on big moments in their child’s life because they’re sitting in meetings or stuck on the freeway, don’t screw them in the housework department by robbing them of even more time to spend with their child because you’re too lazy to scrub the toilet.

Speaking of which, my new schedule has left no time for housework and Esteban is working particularly hard as well. The inside of our toilet looks like a Jackson Pollock painting. I may take a picture of it and submit it to a photography contest. I’ve thought about hiring a maid service, but I don’t even have time to pick up our stuff before the maids come. I know you guys are probably reading that and thinking ‘what the fuck?’ but you chicas know what I’m talking about. You don’t want the cleaning people to think you live like Puck from the Real World, even if you really do.

I managed to sneak out on Sunday with my camera and snap a few fall pictures. A man with a gun yelled at me. I think I was frightening the Canada geese away.

We are swamped at work this morning, so I don’t have much time to write a cohesive entry. II asked if we could put a recording on my phone number ‘Have you tried rebooting? Please try rebooting before harassing our technical analysts, dumbass.’ My request was turned down’. Go figure. I’ll try for another entry later today, if possible.

No, I don’t want to play footsie

There’s just something about fall that makes me want to organize. I’ve been scouring Ebay for the Franklin Planner mahogany purse thing that I’ve lusted over for 3 years. The cost: a mere $340.

Why, oh why, can I not find a sugar daddy that will shower me with presents in return for my platonic acquaintance?? Hmmm? Any takers?

Actually, I could probably just suck it up and buy the dang thing, but I have this weird karmic thing going on right now, and I’m pretty sure that if I go and buy something frivolous, Esteban or I will get laid off. There is so much scary stuff going on in the economy right now and Esteban is a writer for a computer magazine, which is sort of a combination of the two industries most heavily rifting right now. Plus, I’m really a fatalist who figures that my lot in life is to be as poor as the Joad family and eat dirt soup for Thanksgiving.

Besides, once I purchase the natty planner purse thing, I’ll just find another frivolity to occupy my Id. Like a horse or maybe a lifetime supply of savory Ritz crackers.

The other night, Esteban and I had a giggle night.

Now, to be straightforward, I hate giggle nights. I cannot stand giggle nights. I’m a big stick in the mud about giggle nights. Here’s what happens: Esteban comes to be when I am still awake and then we talk for a while. Inevitably, Esteban makes me laugh or I make Esteban laugh and then we laugh and laugh and cannot stop until veritably any silly little thing will make us pee our pants.

But this makes me grumpy because I want to sleep and Esteban keeps giggling like an insane elf. Yes, I’m a big soggy pants downer girl when I want to sleep. There is a time for frivolity and a time for sleep and it’s always fun until someone loses an eye or a limb.

So it was a giggle night. I lobbied for sleep and Esteban lobbied for high laughter and wackiness. Then he scratched his toe.

I should possibly interject here that I find feet the most disgusting parts of a human body. I barely tolerate my own feet, simply because they are on my body. I believe that they have been put as far as possible from one’s face for a reason. And that reason is that they are scary.

There. I said it. Feet are scary. Foot juice is possibly the most scary substance known to man. This all boils down to some scary foot experiences that I’ve had in my life, however. Once, I bent down to pick up some of Esteban’s dirty socks (which could be used to thwart the Taliban, let me tell you, rain some of those footbombs down on Osama and he’d be wishing he had Anthrax). In the same motion, without thinking, I scratched my nose with the hand that was holding the socks, and sniffed. It was days before I could tell you my own name. I thought I was Aunt Bea from ‘The Andy Griffith Show’. I kept making corn bread and wearing lace-collared dresses and big pearl earrings.

So that giggle night, Esteban scratched his toe and for some reason, it gave me flutter tummy and since I was grouchy anyway, I told him ‘Don’t scratch your toe, it will make me puke.’

That was it. Esteban was in hysterics. ‘I can’t believe you played the Vomit Card!!!’ He was rolling with laughter. I just sat there and steamed. None of this was getting me closer to going to sleep. ‘You’ve got to write about this in your diary, so everyone knows what a freak you are.’ He gasped, tears streaming down his face.

So there. I am a freak. But you all knew that.

And just so you don’t think I was unfounded in my grumpiness, we didn’t get to sleep that night until 2 o’clock in the morning. I had to wake up three hours later. I am truly too old for this giggling.

Feet are still gross.

Actually, I think I’d rather be Sabrina or Josie than Betty or Veronica

Wow, a weird double-entry day again. I must be feeling guilty for the lack of updates this weekend.

That’s me. You’d think my drunken mama had been a drunken Jewish mama for all the guilt I carry around with me. Which is why I could never be one of those vampy chicks. I was discussing with PoorYorick the difference between Ginger and MaryAnn. He’s a MaryAnn man. It’s like Betty and Veronica. You either dig Betty or you dig Veronica. The masculine version of that: you either dig Archie or you like Reggie, although Reggie always struck me as a big of a pompous ass. Plus, he really sort of looked like Jughead’s evil twin brother. And I think they were both the illegitimate sons of Miss Grundy. It was the tell-tale weird nose that ties them all together.

I always sort of wished that I was a Veronica, but I’m just a Betty with Veronica tendencies. I have too much guilt to be a successful Veronica’. If I made Midge feel bad about dating a stupid jock, I’d have to make her cookies.

Which brings me to my current guilt: books.

If you’ve been playing along at home, you know how much I’ve been jonesing for the Barnes and Noble to open its latest store nary half a mile from my office. I’ve been envisioning lovely lunches spent reading expensive photography books while drinking warm Blackberry & Sage tea or writing in my red velvet schmancy journal which I never write in. I’m agog with delight over the prospect of ensconcing myself in a nice new overly stuffed chair and putting my feet up on their hearthstone before the gas fireplace.

But here’s the stitch.

My local lovely independent bookseller, with it’s green slate floors, two cats named Stan and Ollie, and its abundance of Margaret Atwood and Gerald Locklin books. My lovely independent bookstore in which I have read barely dry short stories to adoring listeners sitting in antique chairs. I read an article about them in the local newspaper, about how they’re not worried, about how they have very loyal customers who won’t be lured by a Starbucks, Godiva chocolates and gaggles of comfy armchairs.

In my excitement to have tens of literary journals at my beck and call, I had forgotten about my little 18×30 bookstore with no discernible parking spaces.

Hence, the guilt. And the fact that it is EXACTLY like the plot of You’ve Got Mail doesn’t help. If they end up closing and put up a little sign in their window that says ‘We have loved being a part of your lives’, I will just vomit.

Then I’ll probably need a Godiva chocolate and a nice comfy chair while I read the latest issue of ‘Utne Reader’ to get over it.

Stop looking at me like that.

Don’t forget to stop by PoorYorick’s page and give him a big Diaryland welcome. Unlike any previously plugged new diaries on my page, I actually KNOW PoorYorick and he’s pretty cool, smart, and clever. I expect good things to come from his page. Plus, there’s this whole weird karma thing going on that’s just boggling my mind. Stop by his page and he’ll ‘splain.

Mwah!

The Message Board is wondering which Comic Book Character you are?

The one where I run out of things to write about

Oy, now that this diary is 200 plus entries, I’m getting lazy. No updates this weekend, but that means one hella entry today! Not necessarily a good entry, just a long one.

This weekend was extremely weird. Again, I don’t remember what we did on Friday night. Again, I think we watched television.

Saturday was Esteban’s birthday. We started out the day quite strangely. First of all, we slept in. Then, I got up and hustled to the Farmer’s Market for apples. A few nights ago, I made fresh applesauce with our dinner, using only three apples because Esteban usually never eats side dishes. However, once he tried the applesauce, he hovered it up. It was very tasty if I do say so myself.

I purchased a bunch of apples (Gala and Honey Crisp’ neither are really good cooking apples, but I’m willing to try it’ that’s me’ Apple Rebel, baby!!!), a loaf of bread, maple syrup, honey, and a cookie, which I promptly ate. Then I went back home where Esteban had managed to pull his tired self out of bed. He showered and declared that he wanted a non-breakfast breakfast. Off we went to Sports Bar #114. I have half-heartedly been following a ‘healthy’ diet, so I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich and then spent the entire meal drooling over Esteban’s juicy mushroom & Swiss burger. But we got to watch lots of college ball, so that’s always good.

Esteban’s ass still hurts. Poor boy. He’s in a fair amount of pain all the time. He has been essentially doing all of his work with a TV table and a laptop because his tender tuckus can only bear to be placed upon our sofa. I feel so bad for him. That’s how he is, though. He has fallen down those deathtrap stairs several times, yet last week he went down them again, carrying something heavy. His last four Saturdays have been filled by helping his friends and he spent most of his birthday building a PC for another friend while sitting on the sofa, nursing his bruised bottom. And what a cute bottom it is.

So sue me. I love my husband’s butt.

Which is all good, because he loves my tail feathers too.

Our friend Scott had invited us to a housewarming party at his new abode. Naturally, such occasions require a housewarming present. My optimal present is usually a lovely frou-frou candle, but it raised a question of propriety. Scott is unattached. There would be no female who would look appraisingly at my gift of ‘Walk in the Orchard’ Bridgewater candle and declare it an expensive and appropriate gift. I was a tad afraid that Scott, being a man, would look at the candle and think that it was a $2.99 variety that smells like the poop of a dog that has eaten copious amounts of lilacs or some other flower of which candle manufacturers cannot quite replicate the smell.

I figured I’d chance it anyway. I think he liked it, but I’m not entirely certain. To play it safe, Esteban also picked up some weird beer for Scott. They found it exciting that the beer still had yeast in it. You’d have thought it was individual granules of testosterone floating around in there, the way they were going on about it. Good lord. Primitive man rallied in awe around the eclipse of the moon’ modern man beats his chest when he drinks beer with lumpy stuff in it.

Scott’s got a lovely pad, though. Very tasteful and lovely. I’d love to set up Scott with one of my single girl friends. He reminds me of Lloyd Dobbler from Say Anything. Smart, funny, and a little shy. I think, however, now that he’s got a phat pad, he’ll be beating the chicks off him. Tastefully decorated homes are pure pheromones for young women. I have one friend that I think would be perfect for him’ people have told me that she resembles Jennifer Love Hewitt. I think Scott would feel too weird about the whole deal though’ being set up and all of that. He’s so Lloyd Dobbler. But I don’t think he kickboxes.

I think that single men with tastefully decorated homes are to women what dark beer with stuff floating in it is to men.

How’s THAT for an equation!!!!

Whapppppaaa!!! (that’s the sound Chandler makes when he makes the ‘whipped’ sound)

Still haven’t figured out where to go this weekend in Door County. All I want is a room sum whar, far away frum da cold night aihre, with a hot tub for two and a fireplace and a king size bed with a view of Lake Michigan’. Oh wouldn’t it be luverly!!!!

Ahem.

I’ve found a room with a king size bed, a hottub and a view of the highway. Instead of a fireplace, there is a desk. Maybe we could party like rockstars and set the desk aflame. Nah. We’re too old for that. I must be satisfied with being an Apple Rebel, babay!

I have no diary in me today. All that linking on Friday’ it wore me out, man. I’m flat today.

Dear Left Bra Strap,

Please stop slipping off my shoulder, would ya? Christ.

Weetabix

Dear Carson Daly,

You are an incredible tool. And that way that you dress, with the wrinkled t-shirts and weird-ass frat boy jeans? That doesn’t make you look post-modern and grunge, it just looks like you’re a sloppy tool. So get an iron, tool boy, and stop slouching.

Sheesh.
Weetabix

Dear Tom Arnold,

Stop being the poster child for the camp that thinks that all plump women are pathetic.

Weetabix

Dear PoorYorick,

I knew you well. Ok, not so well, but that was a little Shakespeare joke there. Ok, maybe it wasn’t so funny. Anyway, Welcome To Diaryland!!!!.

Big love to ya,
Weetabix

P.S. Gang, maybe y’all would like to stop by his diary and christen it with lots and lots of Guestbook entries and make the guy feel at home? You would? You guys rock.

I don’t feel an entry over 145

Wow. 200th entry.

That’s a lot of entries! Oh, nothing compared to a lot of diarists out there, but I don’t have a lot of stick-to-it history.

Like all mediocre sitcoms, instead of offering a real entry today, I’m repackaging previous entries into a humor-filled page-o-links! My true intent for starting this diary was not necessarily to acquire readers nor to become a part of this very unique diary community, (both of which were fabulous unexpected side benefits!), but rather to get myself into the habit of writing frequently. I, when I put my mind to it, write fiction and short stories, but, like any exercise you’re too lazy to do, the creative muscles had atrophied. Writing is very much like exercising’ just doing it, even if you don’t really have your heart in it, will produce results. Thus, this page. I’ve tried to keep the true spirit of the page going’when I’ve written something funny, it is to make myself laugh. As much as I love you guys, the best writing is done for yourself. It’s very much a masturbatory action, this writing thing.

Thus, I’ve gone back and looked at the entries that made me smile or laugh when I wrote them and here are some of my favorites, as well as ones that were mentioned on the message board. It’s interesting just how much this diary scopes my life.

I’ve offered a great deal of my life on this here page. I’ve expounded on what it’s like to live and drive in my hometown. I’ve offered a Guest Entry from one of my friends.

I’ve written a lot about growing up, about being a plus size woman, about being a woman in general, about trying to my break addiction, and about learning that it wasn’t going to get any better than this. I also wrote about my ‘Boy Songs’ in the one that made everyone go ‘Awwwwwww’.

UncleBob thought I was weird, but I told you that awhile ago. His favorite was when I was whining about wanting him to send me an email . Jen from UpInBlue thinks that my entry on getting my butt kicked by a screen in laser tag is a highlight. No-Ennui loved it when I wrote about showering my boob with chocolate snot . Apparently, embarrassing myself is a fan favorite. If so, then my naked appliance lap dance, stepping on insects, and my dramatic inhalation of Kleenex should also be reader favorites. RoadiePig’s favorite was when I I fingered the AntiChrist‘. I have to admit that one makes me laugh too’ I think because I was imbibing plentiful cold medications when I wrote it, so it feels like someone else wrote it.

I think my personal favorite is the measuring incident or my McEpiphany. They were very easy to write and when I read them, I see nothing that I want to fix, which is a problem with writers’. No entry is ever complete, just abandoned. The other two I liked were about my love of sushi and my distaste for Zebra mussels .

The two diary entries that scored the highest number of hits beyond their life as an index page:

The James Marsters Experience : 474 hits

Life is Beautiful: 174 hits

Most frequent Google Hit :

Allyson Hannigan Naked Pictures At least three times a day.

As always, thank you for reading!

I regret that I have but two breasts to give for my country

It’s been awhile since I have taken on a cause on the page, so I guess it’s time again. Plus, my two favorite things to write about are boobs and poop, so it’s all topical.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

If you have breasts’ check ’em.

Men, if your wives/girlfriends have breasts’. Volunteer to check ’em.

I actually have a story about this topic, but it’s a little counterproductive to tell it. What the hell, I’m telling it anyway.

About four years ago, I was in a bathroom stall at work and noticed I was a little niply. I stuck my hand down my shirt to adjust the girls and noticed something not quite right.

A lump.

I have only felt complete terror a few times in my life and this was one of them. My blood literally turned to ice water. A bowling ball dropped in the pit of my stomach. I marched out to what was unfortunately a public phone and called my doctor’s office.

‘I found something.’

‘You found something?’ said the receptionist on the other end of the phone.

‘A lump.’

‘In your breast?’

‘Yes.’ I said, thankfully that I wouldn’t have to announce I found a lump in my breast amongst a throng of coworkers.

‘Are you at work and you can’t talk?’ she intuited.

‘Yes.’

She made an appointment for that afternoon. I excused myself from work later that day and drove off to the doctor, cursing myself for not doing regular breast examinations. I had never looked forward to having the doctor examine my boobs before, but I was darned near peeing my pants to have someone else take a look at that thing.

I got to the doctor’s office and stripped to the waist. The nurse gave me a Kleenex to put over myself. I lie on the examining table, trying not to envision myself without hair, without breasts.

Finally my fabulous doctor came in and put me through a barrage of tests. I hadn’t shaved my pits so I was a little embarrassed to be a member of the Unshorn Sisters of the Apocalypse. The most uncomfortable thing she made me do was sit up and face her, naked to the waist, and raise my arms to the sky and then lower them. I felt fat, naked and hairy’ all of which are not a good way to feel.

She had me get dressed and then came back to talk with me (one of the reasons my doctor is so awesome’ she doesn’t have huge discussions with you while you’re naked). She confided that she has felt cancerous lumps and mine didn’t feel like cancer to her, but she wanted to have a mammogram done just to make sure. If that came back inconclusive, they’d stick a needle in my boob and take a sample of the thing. After hearing that, the mammogram sounded pretty damn good!

She made an appointment for me for the following morning. Boy, if you might have cancer, they open their schedules for you! I can’t get in to see my dermatologist more than four months from the time of appointment, but they’re just ansty to put my boob in a vice.

The entire time I drove over, I was imagining a demonstration they had done on a morning show. They put a balloon in a mammogram machine and showed how they squashed it one way then they turned the machine and squashed it another way. The weird thing was that they turned the machine with the balloon still in the machine, giving the impression that they leave you stuck in the machine when they turn it for the side picture! I decided on the drive over that if they did that, I was going to punch them. No judge in the world would convict me of assault’. It would be complete self-defense.

They brought me down to the basement of the clinic’. I suppose so the screaming of women with twisted boobs wouldn’t scare the other patients. They brought me into a room and gave me a voluminous robe and told me to strip to the waist again and put the robe on so it opens in front. I have to tell you, I loved this robe. It was huge and wrapped around me like a hug. If they make robes like this, why do they always give you these little sucky things at the doctor’s office?

I sat in my humongous robe and waited. The mammogram machine looked like a huge scary piece of machinery’. It reminded me of those things mechanics use to life engines out of cars. Scattered throughout the room were disembodied breasts’teaching aids for breasts exams, I expect, but it was a bit unnerving seeing breasts of every size scattered around a machine which twists women’s breasts. They looked like the ones that accidentally came off in the process. On the wall, three examples of mammogram x-rays. The first one said ‘Light Pressure’ and showed a breast with no cancer. The middle one said ‘Moderate Pressure’ and showed that same breast with no cancer. The last one, where most people would expect ‘Too Much Pressure’ instead said ‘Accurate Pressure’ and showed that same breast but now riddled with scary spots.

Finally, the technician came in. She was a slightly built lady, mousy in appearance but little did I know, harbored the heart of a dominatrix.

We chatted for a minute and then without warning, her icy little hands scooted under my robe and were fondling my boob. Yikes! She opened my robe and began searching my chest. I tried to help ‘The lump is over here’ but I guess it was a little game she liked to play with herself’ Hide and Lump Seek.

She felt the lump and then placed a sticker on it. She explained ‘This is just a sticker with a tiny little BB on it. It will help us to see on the x-ray where the lump is.’ Um, hello, if you need freaking visual aids to tell where the damn lump is, why the hell do you bother with this Boob Squishing Machine????

She led me to the Mammography machine. ‘Does this hurt?’ I asked. ‘It is some slight discomfort.’ She said. Liar. I should have never believed her. She had me put my hands on these two bars on the machine and then arranged my breast on an extremely cold piece of glass. She then adjusted the machine to fit my height and then needed to readjust my breasts just so. I cannot really express how strange it was to have this strange woman moving and grooving my girl onto this plate like it were a very fine tenderloin steak.

Then she started the crusher. I watched through the top plate as my breast went from a lovely round orb to a flat inch-thick serving platter. It got larger and flatter than I’d ever have thought possible. In addition, the woman had adjusted the plate to my height a little off, so I was actually standing on my tiptoes, hanging by my squashed breast. I watched the number on the machine. She actually adjusted the machine via this thing that looked like a steering wheel on a racing arcade game. She said, ‘Tell me when it hurts and I’ll stop’. ‘It hurts!’ I said, figuring she’d let up on the pressure, but she seemed satisfied with that and walked out of the room, shouting over her shoulder ‘Don’t move, don’t breathe’. A fine thing to tell someone who’s hanging from her breast!

After what seemed like an eternity, I heard the machine click and she returned to take the side view. I let out my breath, figuring that she couldn’t possible squash my breast as hard sideways. I was wrong.

I relaxed slightly. Ok, both views done! Suddenly, she started messing with my unbesmirched breast! No, no! That girl’s clean! She didn’t have a lump! She’s a happy healthy breast! ‘We need to take a picture of a normal breast for comparison.’ Again with the squashing. Again with the dinner plate. Again with the hanging while not breathing.

Finally, we were finished. I pulled in my dinner plate sized deflated orbs, rolled them up and pinned them to my chest with a clothespin. Later she returned with a small object in her hand. I watched as she unscrewed the top glass plate from the machine and replaced it with this weird object.

‘We use this cone when we need a clearer reading.’ I stepped up to the plate with little trepidation and allowed her to place my breast on the Squisher again. This little thing looks like nothing compared to the big plate, I thought.

She lowered the clamping thing and I started cringing ‘It hurts it hurts it hurts it hurts ITHURTSITHURTSITHURTS!!!!’ She squinched up her face. ‘Yes, the cone does hurt a little worse than the plate.’ With that, she reminded me to not breathe or move and left to go make her lunch and drink a nice cappuccino.

She returned and released me from the machine and then said that she needed to take the side view. I told her ‘No way, Lady!’ She said, ‘Fine, get cancer, see what I care?’ and then wiped the foam from the cappuccino off her lips. I made her promise she wouldn’t crank that thing down so hard and she nodded. I reluctantly unrolled my breast and allowed her to place it in the machine again. Once I was hanging there, she lowered it until my voice reached squeaking pitch and said ‘ItHURTS!!!!’ She nodded and then gave the damn steering wheel thing a final spin harder and then fled from the room to finish her cross-stitch sampler while I hung there swearing and trying not to breathe or move.

Finally she released me. I called her a ‘Big Fat Liar’ and threatened to throw a disembodied breast at her. She told me that she was finished with the boob squishing and I told her that she was damn right that she was finished because if she tried to put me in that machine again I’d punch her lights out. She then explained that the process really only seems to hurt people with lots of boobage or very little boobage. She felt my boob again. No lump. I felt for the lump. No lump. It was gone. I think she had actually popped it.

I got dressed and fled the clinic. My boobs hurt. The one that was ‘coned’ REALLY hurt. I drove back to work and rubbed my breast. I’m certain that I gave a lot of commuters an eyeful. That’s when I realized that I still had that goddamned BB sticker on my boob. I reached down my shirt with one hand and peeled the sticker off and threw it out the window.

The next day, my coned breast had a bruise on it the size of a fist (or the size of that damn cone!). But it was a cancer-free bruise! Yay!!!

Let me tell you, though, if men had to put their goods into the squisher machine, they’d come up with another way of doing that procedure pretty damn quick.

So there it is. My monthly public service announcement. Tomorrow is my 200th entry and I’m trying to do something cool. If you have a favorite past entry or entries, please tell the Message Boards.
