To Whom It May Concern

Yesterday, it was 46 degrees, gusts up to twenty miles and hour and raining. I think it was sleeting for a while too.

Needless to say, I didn’t go golfing, which pissed me off. I think golf season is done. There is a freeze advisory tonight, lows into the upper 20s. We’ll probably have snow by next week.

Since I couldn’t golf or work outside, I went shopping in Appleton. Spent way too much money, but ended up with some really cute undies, a slick houndstooth coat, a Mallrats DVD, the Buffy/Angel tape collection, a replacement ‘Phantom of the Opera’ CD set, face stuff from The Body Shop, and several summer items which were on clearance.

It’s not how much you spend; it’s how much you SAVE!

Today, I’m wearing one of the clearanced summer shirts and I’m freezing my ass off. It’s a good thing I’m wearing a new 1940’s style Titanium bra, otherwise I’d be totally nipped out. Nothing I hate more than being niply.

‘Buffy’ begins tonight on FX! 7:00 PM Eastern time, 6:00 PM Central time. You people in Mountain and Pacific are on your own, look at your tv guides for the correct times. I think that they’re starting at the beginning and going in order, so they should be showing ‘Welcome to the Hellmouth Part 1’ tonight and ‘Part 2’ tomorrow. That’s an excellent primer for novice Buffy watchers.

If you’ve never ‘gotten into’ Buffy, you should watch tonight. There will be a quiz.

Here’s a study guide:

What is the name of the most popular girl at Buffy’s new school?

Why did Buffy get kicked out of her last school?

Xander found something of Buffy’s’ what was it?

Willow was accused of purchasing her clothing at which retail chain?

All of you longtime Buffy aficionados can gloat that you already know the answers to these.

Dear Mariah Carey,

Get over yourself and go back to the trailer court from whence you came.

Freak.

Yours truly,

Dear managers at Timberlodge Steakhouse on Oneida Street,

While I’m certain that our founding fathers would be pleased to see ‘United We Stand’ on your sign, they undoubtedly never intended those words to be displayed above ‘Steak and King Crab $17.99’.

Sometimes it’s better just to say nothing.

Oh, and your dining room chairs, while rustic, are really uncomfortable.

Yours truly,

Weetabix

Dear Wisconsin climate,

It is STILL SUMMER!!!!

Damn it!

Dear RoadiePig,

HAPPY 40th BIRTHDAY!!!!

Love ya!

Buy stock in Advil, because it’s going up, baby!

This weekend is the weekend of hobbies for me. Last night, I went to a “cropfest” and added a whopping eight pages to my scrapbooks. If you do not scrapbook, this may seem like a paltry result of six hours of labor, but I kid you not, that is infuckingcredible. Plus they look very nice, so I am happy. You can tell it’s fall if I have any patience at all for scrapbooking.

I’m a little surprised that I enjoy scrapbooking as much as I do. I’m not crazy about the concept of it, but I find it incredibly relaxing. When I was a kid, I wanted to become a grade school teacher, not because I loved kids or chalk dust or that orange sand stuff that they sprinkle on puke, but rather because I wanted unlimited access to all that great paper. Construction paper, manilla paper, crepe paper, newsprint, big rolls of white butcher paper.

So I owned up to the fact that I just like cutting and pasting. I can cut straight lines. You try that some time, it’s not as easy as one would think. Sometimes, to make it seem a little more dangerous and adult, I run with scissors in my hand.

Yeah. I’m a rebel.

Last January, I spent $100 on a suitcase thingy on wheels to hold all my scrapbook junk. Again, perhaps this is like golf and I am attracted to it simply because it has so many accessories. To wit: last trip to the scrapbook store, I came home with a cover for my scrapbook. No, not a pretty cover to make it look nice…. a big purple cover to protect the outside of the scrapbook while I was working on it. That’s totally unneccesary, but I wanted it, so I bought it. It made me happy.

It’s crazy, this lust for accessories.

Today, Esteban is helping friends move large items of furniture into their new house they are building. Apparently, they are not moving everything. They are moving everything in the first floor to the new house and then they are moving everything on the second floor of the old house to the now vacant first floor of that same old house. This is a preliminary step of phase two. Phase two is next weekend, when they move the second floor stuff (which is now on the first floor) into the new house. Unbelievably, then there’s a phase three. Another friend bought their old house, so then we must move everything from that friend’s house into the now empty house.

Markus almost rented the second friend’s duplex, so there would have been a phase four of moving Markus’ stuff into their house, but he didn’t.

I have been relieved of hoisting duties. I have nasty cramps and it’s only the heavy stuff at this point, thus Esteban told me to just stay home. I’m taking the wimpy girl “get out of work free” card. That’s my double-standard feminism in action!

Tomorrow, I have a golf date with Penny. I am very excited although the cramps will make it impossible for me to wear my cute white golf outfit. I did very well when I went golfing with my aunt a couple of weeks ago, despite fleeing from rampaging ducks, and I’m hoping that my golf karma is still holding out. We’re trying a new golf course, one that is a manly course, so we’ll see how it goes. I do so love being one of the only women on the course.

Well, I’ve got big plans today. Off to curl into a fetal position around my heating pad! I plan on eating a bunch of pretzels dipped in chocolate frosting around noon, and run out to get an industrial sized bottle of Advil at 4 pm. Hope you have a splendid weekend!

Dear Faith Hill… you’re only famous because you look like a Barbie Doll

Good Lord.

Can I digress from the normal diary fare for just a minute? When Mike ‘Boogie’ from Big Brother proposed to Krista ‘Trailer Trash’, I suddenly realized that they must have consummated their dysfunction. Then I had hysterical blindness, perhaps due to his baby blue leather basketball outfit that had ‘Chill Town’ written in sequins across the chest. And I am even more appalled that she said yes. I suppose it’s a huge move up for her, considering that her last boyfriend was jailed for beating her up and she’s a scary ‘ho-bag who was in love with a man who put a knife to her throat.

Place them on the list of people who should never have sex. There they will have plenty of company with Tom Arnold and Roseanne, Tom Cruise and any female, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley, and my mother and anyone.

Word around town is that Faith Hill will be singing the national anthem on Monday night’s Packers/Redskins game, being played here in town.

Not that it’s a big deal to the rest of the world, but as you can imagine, there’s quite a buzz around the sleepy little burg of Green Bay that Ms. Hill will visiting.

Personally, I’m not certain she’s got the vocal chops to attempt the Star Spangled Banner. Just because she looks like Country Western Barbie, doesn’t mean that she sings any better than your average Skipper doll. Maybe I’m bitter. I always identified more with Midge, the brunette slightly less-attractive fashion doll. I wonder if Faith Hill’s feet are molded into that permanent high heel position as well? Maybe she’s got a little hole in her hand to hold the microphone. I’m rather disappointed that they didn’t ask Little Richard. At least he’s a diva who’s got a reason to be a diva. Maybe he’d sing ‘Oh Canada’ too.

People are all aflutter because they won’t be allowing carry-ins at the Packer game. No purses, no diaper bags, nothing. Only in Green Bay would they have to add ‘No diaper bags’. We indoctrinate ’em into the ways of the Green and Gold very young here.

Don’t be looking for me in the stands, though. Packer tickets are very much a feast or famine thing. Either you’ve got season tickets and go to every goddamned home game there is, or you have no season tickets and have only been to a handful of games in your life. I’m in the second category. Most people have their children put on the waiting list for season tickets the day they are born. The average time spent on the waiting list before achieving season ticket status is 47.4 years. I am not making that up. They just ran a thing in the paper. It actually makes the news when someone gets season tickets. There are 60,000 people on the waiting list. The stadium holds about 68,000 people, not including the people on the field. Green Bay only has a population of 100,000.

I’ve been to two games in my life’three if you count the time I sold soda in the stands when I was sixteen. But I’m spoiled. I was sitting in the second row for both games, so if the seats are worse than that, I don’t want them. The last game I went to, the guy behind me was eating peanuts and he kept shelling them onto my back. If I stood up, he’d shell them onto my seat and I’d sit back down on peanut shells. My sofa has a better view and shorter lines in the restroom. If I want the true game experience, I just give Esteban a handful of peanuts.

I don’t even eat strawberry jelly anymore, I’m too traumatized.

Last night, I came home from work to my husband doing dishes without a shirt.

Men, if you want to instantly turn on your lady, affect a Chippendale dancer look while doing the housework.

The only downfall was that I couldn’t act on my state of mind for fear that he’d stop doing the dishes. (You could have sexed me up WHILE I was doing the dishes, I wouldn’t have objected’Esteban)

But it was a turn on, let me tell you.

If you’re wondering why he was doing the dishes without a shirt on, it was because he was wearing a sweatshirt yesterday and he didn’t want to push the sleeves up to do the dishes. He hates baggy, stretched-out sleeves.

I’m thinking of getting him a little black bow and white cuff links. Maybe playing ‘You Can Leave Your Hat On’ while doing our fall cleaning.

Had another nightmare last night. This time, I was back in Key West, about to go snorkeling again. We were going to snorkel off this pier or something and just as I was about to jump into the water, someone pointed out that there was a giant squid in the water and I shouldn’t jump in that spot. Then the squid’s tentacles began to search the surface of the water. The snorkeling guide walked me ten feet up the pier and said, ‘Here it’s ok to jump’ while the squid churned the water a couple of yards away.

The nasty thing about remembering lots of trivia is that my subconscious suddenly turns into the godamned Discovery channel during my nightmares. I started reciting all of these facts about giant squids in my dream. They have a big beak that can snap a six-inch solid wood plank. They have claw things at the ends of their tentacles. My friend Eric gets sick if he drinks alcohol and eats calamari. A giant squid has never been captured alive.

This is not my first ‘scary snorkeling’ dream. I think I was traumatized by my snorkeling misadventures in Key West. I think I promised that I would write about it, so here it is:

Last January, we spent a week in Key West when Esteban’s company held its quarterly meeting there. He spent every day in meetings and I was on my own for the day. I’m all cool with being on my own, so this wasn’t a problem. Sucked for him, though. I had originally made plans to go on a dolphin swim, but tanked on it when I realized it cost four times more than a normal reef snorkeling excursion and there was no guarantee that any dolphins would be around during the three hour tour’ a three hour tour.

So I instead opted for a guy who swore that their reef boat was the best snorkeling trip on the island. His big pitch was that the boat had been featured in the James Bond movie ‘The Living Daylights’ and was the fastest boat of that size on the island. He guaranteed that we would get out to the reef in far less time than the other boats, allowing for more time snorkeling. I was down with that, so gave him $30 and signed up.

I’ve been snorkeling in Lake Michigan since I was a wee Weetabix, so I had no fear of the snorkeling experience. I had my own snorkels and fins, although I never use the actual fins. I’m also a very strong swimmer. However, the salesman assured me that they had stairs in which you would be able to walk down into the water up to your neck and then take off swimming from there. He assured me that it was a very easy, lackadaisical adventure with little stress. He even said that they would be wet suits to protect our tender tourist skin from the cold January waters. I was a little dubious about this. Not only did I doubt that they would have a Size Voluptuous wetsuit, I doubted that black rubber would be very flattering on my many curves. But that was ok. I’m accustomed to cold waters, so I wasn’t too worried.

Cool. I truck on over to the pier, which was four blocks away from the sales booth (which was located in a prime tourist spot on Duval Street) and there sits this garbage scow looking thing, with paint peeling off the rails and plenty of evidence that the boat was only being held together by the grace of God and generous use of duct tape. My first thought was “Oh my god, did James Bond BLOW UP this boat?”

I was a little nervous about the whole boating experience. After all, this would involve me wearing a bathing suit in front of complete strangers, but I had decided before hand that I was never going to see these people again so who cares if they remembered me as the cherubic sassy lady with legs whiter than the Before part of a Coppertone ad? But it was a little harder to put forth that brattitude when faced with the ConTiki and a bunch of sunburned locals.

I hustled into a bar and put my bathing suit on and then my clothing back on over it. I was dumb enough to wear white pants and a pale pink t-shirt so my black swimming suit was fairly obvious. I had only my snorkel and mask and a beach towel that turned into a bag (which held my bra and underwear). I was freaked. I hadn’t had any lunch (which later turned out to be a good thing) and didn’t know anyone on the boat. The others had brought along lunches, beer and snacks. I hungrily watched a girl chow on hummus and bagel chips. Oh well, maybe next time.

Immediately, I made friends with two guys who were there on their honeymoon. Something about chubby chicks’. We seem to be a magnet for gay men. I’m not complaining. I love men. Bring ’em on, baby. Plus, David very kindly put sunscreen on my back for me, which totally endeared him to my heart.

Neither of them had ever snorkeled before, so I was giving them lots of pointers on the way to the reef. Because, you know, I was the big veteran and all that stuff. I was acting very macho.

We got to the reef and found five to eight feet waves waiting for us. There were wetsuits for the people who were diving, but we snorkelers got to rough it. Instead of a luxurious ‘walk gently into the water up to your neck’ there was a dive platform on the back end of the boat. It was a little metal grid about a foot wide. Just enough to stand on and dive off of. There was a teeny ladder they extended down into the water. I think my Fisher-Price tree house had a bigger ladder than that thing. What is more, the boat was moving with the swells and the dive platform was rising up out of the water and the SLAMMING down into the water, submerging a good two feet, with every wave. They actually had to warn us to not get too close to the dive platform when we were the in water because it might crash down onto our heads and kill us.

People were throwing up off the side of the boat. The crew was yelling at us ‘If you don’t want to get sick, get in the water!’ Richard, David’s partner, immediately chundered into the water. One of the more disturbing things was that immediately, brightly-colored yellow fin snapper came to the surface and you would have thought it was feeding time at Sea World the way they scarfed it up. This, of course, made more people puke. It was a puke chain reaction.

I was able to maintain my composure and jumped into the ocean, without dive fins or the wimpy snorkel vest. The crew kept asking if I was certain that I wanted to do that, that it would be easier with the fins and the snorkel vest (basically water wings to keep you afloat), but I scoffed at them.

The water was cold. The waves were knocking me around. Every time I put my face in the water, my fancy schmancy snorkel blocked up from water trying to get past the mechanism that prevents water from going down the tube. I began to hyperventilate Every time I put my face in the water, the snorkel blocked up. Water was going into my mask because my hair kept getting caught and breaking the seal. I spent about fifteen minutes treading water, getting knocked around by the waves, when I asked for a snorkel vest and a pair of fins. The crew smugly gave them to me.

As I was putting on one of the fins, my foot hit something hard and solid. I was in more than thirty feet of water. I am five foot nine. There should have been nothing there but water, my friends. Immediately, I imagined that movie from the 70’s with a giant turtle in it. At that point, I can verify that it is possible for chubby chicks to fly, because I jumped at least fifteen feet out of the water onto the dive platform. I do not remember climbing the ladder with the fins in my hand. I do not remember walking across the rocking boat. I just remember sitting on one of the benches and talking to David in the water and trying to stop my heart from racing.

David got back into the boat. Richard was very ill and was cowering below deck. David and I chatted for a bit. He calmed me down. The crew then declared that we would be moving to a calmer side of the reef. Hello? There’s a calmer side? Why, in God’s name, did we go to the rough side of the reef then? Trying to separate the barfers from the non-barfers, were we? We all buckled down from another death-defying trip to the other side of the reef.

This time, I steeled myself. I was going in this time. The waves were only three to five feet. This was more of what I was used to. I was the first person on the dive platform and I sat down and began to put on my fins.

Just then, people rushed to the back of the boat. Thirty feet away from me, two dolphins were surfacing and jumping. I relaxed. If there were dolphins, this was a sign. A good sign. One of the crewmembers snarked, ‘Well, now we’re sure there’s no sharks.’ I liked how they weren’t sure before, but allowed us to jump right in.

I jumped into the water and began to snorkel. The chunder-eating yellow tails were everywhere, coming up to sniff at my fingers. I saw lots and lots of yellow tails between trying not to drown or hyperventilate. I relaxed. This wasn’t bad. This wasn’t bad at all.

At one point, Hummus Girl came down to the dive platform and leaned over it, barfing into the water. I was fifteen feet away. I gagged, but didn’t barf. The yellow tails ate well that day. She apologized to me for barfing so close to me and for making me gag. I told her that I understood.

Then the jellyfish came. They had warned to avoid the jellyfish because they sting and it sucks, but they said that they were very easy to avoid, as they just float and don’t actually propel themselves. I wasn’t too worried. I was taking pictures with my underwater camera and not really paying attention to my surroundings. I saw a perfect picture of three moon jellyfish. I moved my camera to center them in the shot and a fourth one popped into the frame. I lowered my camera and saw tons of jellyfish around me, bodies ranging in size from dinner plate to family-sized pizza. Millions of baby jellyfish were floating around my body, around my arms, across my chest, harmless as empty tea bags.

I turned around to pack away from the gaggle of jellyfish and found that I was actually completely surrounded by them. I popped my head up and gasped for air. Sailor Bob and Sailor Ken were standing on the dive platform, gawking at the strange phenomenon. They saw me and said ‘Ma’am, you may want to make your way back to the boat, you are completely surrounded by a hundred yard wide school of jelly fish.’ ‘I know, you bastard!’ I screamed and grabbed for the towrope.

The nice thing about fat: It floats. I was able to skim across the top of the school by pulling myself along the towrope to the bobbing boat while Sailors Bob and Ken pointed at the jellyfish saying, ‘Look at the size of that one!’ ‘Have you ever seen one that big?’ ‘Must be the moon cycle that’s drawing them in from the deep’. I pulled myself back to the dive platform, maintaining a healthy distance away from it. Sailor Bob says ‘Ma’am, I’m going to allow you to break one of our rules and go ahead and climb up the ladder with your fins on, just get up here as quickly as you can.’

I jumped onto the ladder and tried to climb up with my fins on. There was no fucking way. Fins are hard enough to walk on, but try to climb up a little six-inch wide ladder that is bobbing up five feet up into the air and then two feet down into the water. It’s just not happening.

I looked up at Sailor Bob. I couldn’t see into the water to know if I was near the jellies but I would have to get in the water to take off the fins. ‘I’m going to have to take them off. Tell me when it’s clear.’ He gave the signal and I dropped underwater about ten feet, pulled off my fins, fought my way back up to the surface, avoiding the dive platform which was moving with the waves, and scrambled back up the ladder. Then I collapsed into a heap on a bench and sat there, dripping. Sailor Bob later said that he thought they’d be taking me to the hospital, given the size and the number of the jellyfish that surrounded me. Sailor Ken confided that he’s been coming to the reef six days a week for eight years and had never seen moon jellyfish the size of the ones he saw in that school.

Of the twenty-five of us on the boat, there were thirteen divers wearing wet-suits (some full-body, some partial) and twelve people snorkeling (in swimsuits). There were 12 people stung by jellyfish. At the time of the jellyfish invasion, about five people were up on deck due to seasick misery. As far as I can tell, every person who was snorkeling at the time got stung with the exception of myself.

Scary, nonetheless.

On the boat ride back to Key West, we had the camaraderie of a platoon of war-ravaged soldiers. People were peeing on their jellyfish stings. People were puking or puked out. It was freezing. We couldn’t get down to the cabin as the door was blocked by a dozen dripping wetsuits. Even if I had been able to get at my towel, I wouldn’t have been able to wrap up in it because it contained my clothing and undergarments. David and I huddled on the upper deck for warmth and talked about our favorite Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals. Never once did it bother me that I was sitting on a boat in my bathing suit with 24 strangers looking at me. There was no energy left for body issues.

When I returned back to shore, I was late for a dinner party at La Ti Da, a nouveau cuisine place. I stripped my suit at the hotel and went with salt covering my hair and skin. La Ti Da was a very lovely place but they had Yellow Tail on the menu. Someone at our table actually ordered it. I didn’t have the heart to tell her about the chunder experience.

I ordered the vegetarian plate. And Cosmopolitans. Lots and lots of Cosmopolitans.

That’s not a raisin, that’s an earwig!

In the wee hours of the morning, after falling back asleep following a YEOWARLLLLLLLLLL episode from our dear cat Chelsea, I had one of those strange and disturbing dreams. First of all, I believe that there was a really cheesy horror movie from the 80’s that shared the same plot of my dream. I was a high school cheerleader. I might well have even been a Rancho Carne cheerleader like my heroes Missy and Torrance from ‘Bring it On’, but that is no matter. The thing is that it was Cheerleading Camp and there was a killer on the loose, striking each of us down in our pom-pom wielding glory. I was personally recognizing each potential scene from various movies, realizing before it happened that the killer was about to strike. Wait a minute, where did the rest of them go, I’m all alone? Must turn around quick, because the killer is about to strike! The nights and nights of watching horror movies as a teen were not spent in vain. I think I’d do pretty well against a homicidal maniac, as long as s/he was mentally unbalanced and followed the horror movie rules of attack, as detailed in ‘Scream’.

But that wasn’t the truly disturbing thing. The thing that I’m all freaked out about was a strange anomaly in the dream. I was running through a dark park in my cheerleading warmup suit, the killer hiding nearby, about to strike with a circular saw blade that she threw like a discus, when suddenly, out of nowhere, AN EARWIG CRAWLED INTO MY MOUTH AND I CHOMPED DOWN ON IT. I remember spitting it out in pieces, looking at the gross pincher things and the yucky feet. I clearly tasted the sick slime in my mouth. I believe in the dream, I stopped running and stood there, spitting out the bug parts. The crazed killer had lost all importance at that point. She stood there, deflated, with her insanely sharp spinning circular saw blade in her hand. She opened her mouth and a big yodeling YEOWARLLLLLLLL came out. I said ‘What?’ She squinched up her face and said again ‘MEORRRRRRRRRRLLLLLLL’. Then the smell of rotting fish wafted over my face.

Chelsea was standing on my chest, meowing into my face. My mouth tasted kind of funny.

Then I was wide-awake, because I wasn’t sure. Did an earwig actually crawl into my mouth or did I just dream it? Was the funny taste in my mouth from sleeping with my mouth open or is it the viscous residue of a creature of the six-legged variety? I jumped up and frantically began searching the sheets for earwig parts. Didn’t find any.

I always think of that skit on Saturday Night Live so many years ago. I believe the guest star that week was John Larroquette. He played a guy who had died and was now talking to his guardian angel, being played by Dennis Miller. He was asking all of these questions like ‘What occupation was I best suited for?’ (Answer: President of the United States) and ‘Which celebrity who we think is dead, is really alive.’ (Answer: Hitler and Jim Morrison). Then he asked, ‘What was the grossest thing I ever accidentally ate?’ and Dennis Miller wouldn’t tell him because it was too, so he changed it to ‘What was the 47th grosses thing I ate?’ and Dennis Miller replied, ‘Once you ate an earwig that fell into a bowl of butterscotch pudding.’

I’ve never been able to eat butterscotch pudding after watching that skit. To me, it tastes like earwigs.

When I was a little kid, my two Aunts (including Aunt Brumhilda who now starves her children) told me that caraway seeds in rye bread were actually minnows. Almost thirty years later, I still gag if I accidentally eat a caraway seed.

People, don’t mess with your kids. It just ain’t that funny.

Just wanted to give a big warm ‘Welcome to Online Journaling’ to Outfoxed, who just started his journal this month. Oh, and his guest book is pristine and stark, so you might want to help fill it up a little?

Quite a rousing discussion about Gone But Not Forgotten Foods on the Message Boards. Does no one remember Google peanut butter???? That stuff was the shiznit.

Also, if you are in St. Cloud, MN and reading this, please send me an email. I keep seeing this server on my stats and I’m curious! I’ll explain why when you email me!

And now it’s time for the bonus round

My entry today left me feeling unfulfilled, thus a bonus round of Weetabix.diaryland.com tonight.

I didn’t mean to give the impression this morning that women desire a man who knows how to do magical things with his tongue. Honestly, while a Gene Simmonsesque ability to lick ones own eyebrows is admirable, if not a little worthy of a “Sex in the City” type luncheon with friends, it’s not that trait that women find desirable. It’s the WILLINGNESS to do acrobatics that is key there.

Oh my. I’m blushing now. Perhaps we should have left well enough alone. My rosacea is all aflare.

Who decided that playing guitar was a cool thing and playing, say, glockenspiel was uncool?

For the record, I think glockenspielists are DAMNED cool.

Play that funky glockenspiel, white boy. That’s all I’m saying. Play that funky glockenspiel righhhhhhht!!!!!!!!

Play that funky glockenspiel ’til you die.

Still wondering about the foods you miss from childhood on the message boards. Check it out.

I thought of another one: There was this candy bar, made of chocolate and it was full of little air pockets in the chocolate– kind of like a thick Nestle Crunch bar, but not quite. When I was in England, Cadbury had something similiar, but not quite like it, but I forget the name of that candy bar too.

My cat can beat up your cat

I think that when you reach a certain age and you haven’t had children to distract you, you begin to adopt pseudo-children.

My cats will be the death of me yet.

A summary: I own two cats. Chelsea is an eighteen-year-old, orange-striped barn cat without front teeth. Tilly began her life in a comic book store where she was regularly prodded, poked and mistreated by pimple-faced youths with intense body odor. We adopted her when she was not quite a year old and it has taken roughly six years for her to move from feline serial killer to mere psychopath. I have hopes that she will progress to a mild case of bipolar disorder before she croaks. The name she was given at the comic store was actually ‘Attila’, but we called her Tilly, in hopes that possibly the scary name was giving her an inferiority complex or possibly a name to live up to. Then I further feminized her name by giving her a middle name of ‘Marie’. Her name on her vet’s records is actually ‘Attila Marie’.

She and Chelsea despise each other with the fire of a thousand suns.

What is more, Tilly has become a very rotund feline. To the outside observer, it would almost appear as though every pound that Chelsea loses, Tilly appropriates. What is more, Tilly has decided that I am her mother. She kneads and suckles my dirty clothing. Her favorite time of the day is when I take off my pajamas and place them on the bed, where she will then happily lay upon them for several hours. It makes me feel a little dirty, actually. Kind of like those women who sell their panties over the Internet.

Tilly loves to play with cat toys, such as used q-tips dragged out of the garbage, the blinds in the kitchen (or, I should say, that WERE in the kitchen’ I found them in a tangled heap at the top of the basement stairs’ I think they were following her down the stairs as she tried to hide). Her favorite activity is knocking over the wicker garbage basket in our living room and beating the shit out of my stuffed sheep Lanolin. Let’s just say Tilly has an anger management problem.

Tilly’s favorite treat is beef jerky and Lemon Italian Ice from Fazoli’s. She will seek and destroy any cup of Lemon Italian Ice in the house.

Chelsea, on the other hand, is Tilly’s complete opposite. Where Tilly doesn’t want to be touched, Chelsea is a lap whore. She begs for attention at every opportunity. Where Tilly is schizophrenic, Chelsea is relaxed or asleep. The downside is that Chelsea is a talker, a yowler, and a caterwauler. At one time, I fantasized that Chelsea had a finite number of meows before her vocal chords actually ceased working. This has yet to happen. Lately, she’s discovered that a frantic YEOWARLLLLLLLLL will get her immediate attention, thus at 3:00 am, we are treated to the sounds of feigned Cat Agony from the dining room or from under the bed. Because she wants attention, yet she wants to be far away when she does it. I think that she realizes that were she within reach, we would have strangled her long ago.

While Tilly is the playful one, after seventeen years, we discovered a toy for Chelsea. She thinks that a laser pointer is the shiznit. She actually perks up at the sound from the chain. When I play with the laser pointer when we’re in bed, I can actually get her to try to bite Esteban’s butt. It’s a happy thing. Plus, it tuckers her out so that she doesn’t yodel in the wee hours of the morning. Once we misplaced a laser pointer and found it months later, with big teeth marks in the metal. We suspect Tilly, as she is very jealous of any playtime that Chelsea takes away from her.

But they are, in some ways, my little furry carpet monsters. When I took Tilly to the groomer to be washed this spring, I actually took a bunch of pictures like any other proud mom. Actually, I just wanted to be able to laugh at them later. I’m a mean mommy, I guess. It’s probably better that I only have cats.

Today, we took a forced voluntary employee satisfaction test at work. It is technically voluntary. They like to tout that they had 100% participation in their voluntary employee satisfaction survey. They also like to make goals to reach a certain percentage of Happy Employees every year’. Or the beatings will commence, I suspect.

One year, about a year after I started here, I was signed up for the very last proctored session of the survey. I was sick that day. When I came in the next day, I received an email from the now-retired Human Resources chick, which detailed in terse tones how I had been absent from my assigned session and she gave me a time to come into her office, where she would personally oversee me while I filled out that voluntary survey. On copy of the email were my supervisor, her supervisor, and the vice president in charge of our division.

When I went to fill out my survey, she icily said ‘May I ask why you were not at your assigned session?’ ‘I was sick.’ I said. ‘Oh. Here.’ And she shoved a number two pencil in my hand, along with a sheet of little bubbles to blacken voluntarily. I felt like volunteering to shove that number two up her nostril.

I like our new HR guy though. He dresses up like Gene Simmons and plays in a Kiss revival band. You gotta love a guy who’s not afraid to use his tongue. On the upside, I really love my new job and my boss, so I will not be responsible for any low scores this year.

I think the Pontiac Aztez looks like the bastard child of a Jeep Wrangler and an AMC Hornet.

That depresses me though. Anyone under the age of 21 will not know what a Hornet looked like. Maybe not even under the age of 25. All of the ugly 70’s that they missed. Wacky Packs, clothing with the seams inside out, Google peanut butter. If I could bring back one food, it would be Google banana flavored peanut butter. Does anyone else remember that?

What other foods do you miss? Tell the Message Board.

Open tongue wounds… it’s a good thing

I have eaten too much pineapple and now my mouth is full of little tiny burning cuts.

That’s a Monday for you. Right there.

Yet do I cease eating the pineapple? Does the stinging pain adhere itself into my short term memory until I become conditioned to associate pineapple with pain?

It does not.

This all explains so much, actually. The way that I continue to not balance my checkbook. The way that I will walk over the same spilled kitty litter with my bare feet a hundred times in one day instead of picking it up. The way that I sometimes find myself singing along to an ‘Nsync song, despite the way it makes my teeth itch.

I have a canker sore on the tip of my tongue and I keep biting it. At this rate, I’ll soon be wiping my butt with sandpaper after a night of 5-alarm habenero chili.

Maybe I’m secretly all into BDSM or something. I’m pretty proud that I now know what that means. For a long time, I thought S&M was a pilot name for a new flavor of M&Ms.

Yesterday, I continued on my happy homemaker bit. I went to Home Depot (again!!!! This is a record!) in search of some stuff that cleans your vinyl siding that you spray on with your garden hose. It was not to be had at Home Depot. They tried to talk me into renting a pressure washer. As much fun as I had with the electric drill on Saturday, I think I could get into some serious trouble with a pressure washer. Mellow Yellow was not in attendance. I ended up purchasing some really beautiful lightest blue pots for Plant Central above our refrigerator. I have a hodge podge of pots up there, and the last time I leisurely wandered Home Depot, I fell in love with these pots, yet was too cheap to buy them. They’re very 1940’s retro. They remind me of something that would be in my great-grandmother’s house. They make me feel gay like Andy Rooney (that was for you, UB).

What is more, I came home with the pots and promptly repotted all of my plants. So now they all match and I am very happy indeed. Martha Stewart would be proud.

You know, I think Martha could sell anything if she said ‘It’s a Good Thing’ after talking about it. She could probably market a scented-candle which gave off the aroma of her body odor. Pheremones At Turkey Hill. She’s becoming as omnipresent as Oprah, but a little less preachy. I think that Oprah and Martha maybe diametrically opposed archenemies. Martha is the uber-repressed WASP from the ‘burbs and Oprah’s the sentimental sistah with an eating disorder of gold. And I mean that truthfully. She is the media icon that obsessive-compulsive binge eating built.

I have a lot of respect for Martha, though. She’s a snob, but she acknowledges that she’s a snob. She revels in it. Oprah’s trying to be ‘one of us’ while she lives in a million dollar penthouse. Plus, Martha doesn’t mind being hip-deep in cow poo, even if she’s wearing a Gucci sweater while she’s doing it. At least it would be an OLD Gucci sweater. Because that’s Martha’s way.

Plus, you’ve got to admire a woman who’s made so much money for marketing her lifestyle. I’d try to market Weetabix Living, but no one’s interested in paying to watch me walk over the same spilled kitty litter with my bare feet.

I wish I had a nice little pot of pudding that I could stick my tongue into. I’ll bet that would stop my canker sore from hurting. Or maybe I should just eat another lovely piece of pineapple.

Ouch.

I’ve really got to stop this.

Is this how non-lazy people spend their Saturdays?

Man, yesterday was an awesome day. I busted ass and yet feel great.

I think this is how Martha Stewart does it. This must be how she gets so much done and still has time to raise chickens.

Friday night I was having a hell of time falling asleep. I even had to make myself a jumongous glass of chocolate milk at 12:30 a.m. this morning, which then did the trick. Esteban got home at 3:30, after a rousing evening of drinking beer on a friend’s back porch. Ah yes, you can take the man out of the hicks, but you can’t take the hick out of the man.

I woke up refreshed and vital at 6:30 this morning. I had tons of energy! I was springing in every step. Why can’t I be energetic on six hours of sleep during the week? Why am I dragged out on eight hours, hating the alarm clock? It’s a mystery.

I jumped out of bed, threw on my clothes because it was Saturday morning and that means one thing, boys and girls, one glorious tantalizing thing:

FARMER’S MARKET!!!!!!!!!!!!

I tousled my hair with my fingers and went sans makeup, as it is truly the hippy thing to do. One does not attend the Green Bay Downtown Farmer’s Market in full makeup nor even a hint of eye-liner. That’s for suburbanites and the organic farmers will laugh at you and charge you $1 more per pound of potatoes. I booked and got there roughly fifteen minutes after it opened, which is prime. Not a huge crowd yet and still too chilly for the hornets. Being there at 7:15 a.m. also means that you will get to hear the various church bells chime in their early morning services at the surrounding cathedrals and churches downtown.

Sometimes I love living in Green Bay.

Farmer’s Market score: 1 loaf white bread, two tomatoes, one jalepeno pepper, one huge bunch of cilantro, two bouquets of English roses, three enormous peaches, a jar of pickled mushrooms (for Esteban), a pound of white mushrooms, half a peck of Rome apples, two bunches of radishes, a pint of hickory nuts, a glass of freshly squeezed strawberry/orange juice and a chocolate chip oatmeal cookie.

Yep. Sometimes Green Bay rocks.

Then I hustled over to Ward and June’s house. I always purchase Ward some radishes whenever I go to the Farmer’s Market because he loves them, but June will not allow him to buy them. Apparently, whenever he eats radishes, he burps fiery radishes burps at her for some time. Thus, I am the man’s only radish supply and I take this responsibility very seriously. After all, it’s not like I am the recipient of the radish burps, so anything I can do to make my Pop happy.

June came running out of the house when I pulled up and gave me a big bone-crushing hug. You see, even though we’ve talked on the phone since the attack and I’ve not left Green Bay, she’s not been truly convinced that I have not been somehow injured in Tuesday’s tragedy. I gave them a bouquet of roses, the hickory nuts, the radishes, some apples, and a peach. I chatted with them for awhile, being the awesome daughter that I am, and found out that they have actually purchased the pool I talked them into earlier this summer. They are so excited to install it next spring. Score again and it was not even 9 o’clock!

Then I drove back home and woke up Esteban, who was in the deepest drooling coma I’ve yet seen. After some amount of whining and pleas for sexual paybacks, Esteban finally arose and we went out to breakfast. There, he fluxuated from staring into the coffee pot to staring at the salt and pepper shakers. I, on the other hand, was chirpy and gay. You know, ‘gay’ in the 1940’s ‘Judy Garland and Andy Rooney’ kind of way. Not that I would have a problem with being gay the other way, I just didn’t want you to think I was mentally undressing Eunice, our waitress, and running my eyes up and down her varicose veined legs or anything.

If our waitress were Eliza Dushku, then maybe it would have been the other kind of gay. Because I’d do her in a heartbeat. Maybe Gwen Stefani too. I’m entranced by her stomach in the video where she’s inexplicably riding a four-wheeler through Manhatten. When she’s showing her stomach, I cannot look away.

After breakfast, I made Esteban take apart our lamppost outside so I could get some replacement bulbs. For some reason, the bulbs in our porch light and lamppost burn out at eighty times the rate of normal bulbs. They only last about a month or something, it’s ridiculous. They’re not normal bulbs, they are clear and have this weird little point. I think it’s supposed to look like a flame, but I don’t think the lightbulb people are faking anyone out on this issue. All six of the bulbs in both lights had burnt out and we had no front lighting at all. Time to fix that.

I also grabbed Fern’s baby present and birthday present from the kitchen, where it has lived all summer. I missed Fern’s baby shower. The child is now over a month old and yet in my kitchen is where the baby present sat. I was all about clearing up loose ends.

First I went to Fern’s house, where she is living with her parents and husband. I gave her the presents and chatted with them, apologizing immensely for my “Bad Friend” actions of not stopping by earlier with the presents. She accused me of “going crazy in the baby department” so I know that my gift made up for the tardiness. I felt bad, though, when she unwrapped the little sandals. I had purchased and wrapped it all in June and honestly forgot what I had given them. I’m just relieved that I didn’t buy anything that was now too small for him, so I’m overlooking the little “non-seasonal” thing. Bad Friend Incident: Taken Care Of!

Then I drove to Home Depot. There I saw Mellow Yellow and his wife Mrs. Yellow. You see, in the deepest darkest winter, when I have complete cabin fever, my friends and I sometimes go to the Holiday Inn and sing karaoke with all of the other people who never got enough attention as children. The reason I go to the Holiday Inn is that mostly good singers go there, and I don’t have to sit through a million off-key renditions of ‘Man I feel like a Woman’ or ‘The Thunder Rolls’. Sure, you get an occaisional wedding party who must go up and slaughter ‘Love Shack’ or ‘Summer Nights’, but for the most part, it’s all ‘professionals’.

Yes. I know that I’m a dork. But let’s move on.

Occasionally, we see Mellow Yellow there. He is this older gentleman who is six foot three and probably weighs 145 pounds. He always wears a brightly colored shirt (I’ve seen him wearing teal, yellow, fuchsia and lime green), tight blue jeans with a handkerchief in the back left pocket which matches his shirt, black penny loafers and socks which also match the shirt and the handkerchief. Around his neck is a chain with a glow-in-the-dark alien head. It does not necessarily match the shirt/handkerchief/sock combo (with the exception of the lime green ensemble, which does match). He has his silver hair styled in a pompadour and wears a goatee with the mustache waxed into a little point. I call him Mellow Yellow because he only sings three songs, one of them being Mellow Yellow. He sings Mellow Yellow every time I see him (and the lyrics of the song being ‘they call me Mellow Yellow’ gives me a strike against originality but sue me). I can’t recall his other two songs, but they are also from the sixties and equally as hokey and strange.

The Karaoke host guy told me that Mellow Yellow cornered him before the New Year’s Eve 1999 and told him about how he was getting ready for the aliens to come and take him and Mrs. Yellow to their mother ship.

I couldn’t make this up if I tried.

Anyway, Mellow and Mrs. Yellow were at Home Depot and Mellow had deviated from his normal attire. He was wearing a red and white striped shirt that had to have dated back to 1976 and a pair of pants which looked as though they had been sewn out of an American flag, with the stripes going vertically down his legs. He looked like one of those Uncle Sam guys that walk on stilts at Fourth of July parades.

Only he wasn’t on stilts.

I did not get near enough to see if he was wearing the alien pendant or not.

What is more, Mellow and Mrs. Yellow were going everywhere I was going. I mean, they stopped at the very same aisle as I did for the light bulbs, standing literally right next to me as I picked them out. They were looking at rope lights, undoubtedly to better light the UFO landing strip they have on the roof of their house. They didn’t recognize me. I fled with my twelve light bulbs and didn’t even stop to drool at the Jacuzzi hot tubs. I was that discombobulated.

Back home, I washed out the insides of both light fixtures, removing the dead bugs and everything. I know. I’m as stunned as you are. Esteban was floored, or maybe would have been if he weren’t in a hung-over stupor. He mowed the lawn for six hours. Before you get impressed, it’s a two-hour job, people.

I then began to attack the rust at the bottom of our lamppost. Our lamppost was one of the very first home improvements we did. Actually, what we did was replace the existing lamppost, which had fallen apart and was basically a 40 watt bulb on a stick. But the lamppost sits in a huge snow bank for most of the year and was beginning to rust. I gave the rust spots a cursory scraping with a wire brush and had given up and was going to just spray that shit with the Rustoleum when Esteban had a rare moment of clarity. He approached me with an extension cord and an electric drill. Instead of a drill bit, it had a wire brush on it. He showed me the difference between using that thing and the manual wire brush.

I went to town on that pole, working it up and down for at least an hour. The pole actually started getting hot from friction.

Boy, that last paragraph almost read like porn. Power tool porn.

Power tools fucking rock. That’s all I’m going to say. I killed all of the rust. I actually blew away an earwig on the ground too. It was easy to get a little carried away. Then I cleaned the pole and taped off the light and then painted it. Very cool. It’s all shiny and black now. Shiny poles make me happy. They remind me of my days as a stripper at the Wolf’s Den. If you don’t have a shiny pole, you get a heat rash in the most inconvenient of places, you know.

After all of our home care, we treated ourselves to decadent frozen custard sundaes. Mine was a Fudgeana, which is the most perfect of all sundaes’banana, hot fudge, and pecans. YUMMMM! It just happened to be Esteban’s all time favorite flavor-of-the-day’Death By Chocolate, so he just got a couple of scoops of that.

We went for a lovely ride in Esteban’s truck. ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ came on the radio, so we both sang it at the top of our lungs with the windows rolled down. Esteban has a hard time hitting the high notes. I love him anyway.

Then we came home and Esteban watched some anime and I went to bed because I was beat. Even though I didn’t do even an ounce of laundry or any other of my normal Saturday things, I still felt a huge sense of accomplishment and had a great day. I hope your Saturday was just as grand!

Dick Gephardt looks amazingly like Adam West, TV’s Batman.

Things I am looking forward to

Things to look forward to:

Harry Potter movie…. opens November 16!

Buffy on FXTV begins September 24 at 7:00 PM!!!! Oodles of snarky goodness with a chewy nougat center of sarcasm. Your daily recommended dosage of witty verbage. Now with more Anthony Stewart Head!!

Likewise, new Buffy starts very very soon. Not sure when. I had heard first week in October but now everythings pushed back, so I’m as lost as the proverbial slayer without a watcher….. Ooooh, that would make me Faith, wouldn’t it? Damn. I only wish I looked half as cute as Eliza Dushku in a patent leather catsuit. Or even Eliza Dushku in a Rancho Carne cheerleading outfit.

Scratch that. I’m totally that cute.

Anyway……….

The way my breath feels when I walk outside the morning of the first frost

Eating too much candy corn

The smell of the house when I make apple butter

Being able to sleep next to my nuclear core husband who is too freaking hot for me to be near during the summer and a safety perimeter of one foot must be maintained in our bed at all times (duh, well, not at ALL times… um…)

The lawn not growing at its frantic, genetically-altered pace it’s kept up all summer since we started hiring a landscaping company to do their herbology magic

The smell of our neighbor’s woodburning stove

Tilly will stop shedding

Bringing out all of my alpine fleece clothing and lovely turtlenecks

Wearing socks every day (ok, actually, maybe I don’t look forward to that)

Not feeling as though I have to do outside projects

Making hearty meals, breads and such, which I’ve refrained from for fear of heating up the house

Christmas carols

Watching “White Christmas” and having Esteban make me a “Tom and Jerry” with lots and lots of rum and nutmeg

Some vacation this winter where it is warm (but hasn’t been determined at this point)

Today I was supposed to finish up that girl’s senior pictures but she piked on me. No phone call, nothing. I tried calling her cell phone, but it has been disconnected. Well then. Carry on.

I felt the need to embark on a project of some sort, something with my hands. I chose cross-stitching because my plan was to cross-stitch something for a friend who is expecting a baby. That’s always my plan. I’m very altruistic that way. I’ve started and not finished two different “gift” cross-stitch projects (although one project was abandoned when the cat threw up on it… you just can’t recover from that, you know), and I’d actually like to make something for myself one of these days. I went to two different stores and didn’t find exactly what I wanted for my friend. I found some cute kits, but they were all that pre-stamped crap that you stitch about 1/8 of and then frame it up. I think that’s cheating. If I’m going to be in awe of something that someone stitched, it’s going to be all stitchery… something from nothing. NOT something that someone stamped a picture onto and then the person came along and slapped a few threads into. That’s just pointless.

So I found something that I actually liked. It’s just a picture of two cats curled up against each other. It’s actually a little against my better judgement. It has a high cute factor. I’m pretty against the whole “cute” thing. I hate it, in fact. But these cats actually look a LOT like Tilly and Chelsea and the real Tilly and Chelsea would never actually lay that closely together so I would like to have a picture of two cats made of thread who are lying that closely together. The thing I dislike about it is that they are in the shape of a heart. It’s a little too precious, but then the kit is brought back around by a very tasteful flower border. As I said, very against my usual tastes, but that’s why I’m the enigma that I strive to be. Just when you think I’ve got class, I pull out the big old macrame planters and horizontal striped capri stretch pants.

So that’s what I did tonight. And I watched “Flipper”.

Before you raise your eyebrows, it was better than watching more and more WTC coverage or the Emeril channel. God I hate Emeril. I think he’s invading every media possible.

If he starts a recording career, I’m moving out of the country.

I suppose it could happen. I hear Tommy Mattola is on the market.

Anyway, I watched “Flipper” because it was filmed in Key West, which is where we spent our Winter 2001 vacation. So I had a reason. Plus, I was cross-stitching and didn’t want to get distracted, as I would have with “Dangerous Liasons” on the other channel. Plus, “Flipper” was not that bad. Very cute. No swearing. Lots of underwater scenery.

Would my twenty-year-old self recognize me as I am today? I’m not certain.

The underwater shots reminded me of my snorkeling adventure in Key West. Someday I will write about it. I think I’ve alluded to it in previous entries, but never specifics.

On the plus note today, I stepped into a plate of congealed gravy.

This is a plus note because after one steps into a plate of congealed gravy, things can only get better from that point.

Chelsea was a bit disturbed that I picked up her treat and threw it out, however. She retreated to a corner and licked the bottom of my gravy-covered sock.

That was my night. I’m actually trapped at home tonight, as Esteban has left yet I am somehow parked in by his truck. And he refused to fetch me ice cream. I must remind him that fetching ice cream for me is actually detailed in our wedding vows. Well. I’ll let it slip. This time.
