Delights of the Farmer’s Market

Drumroll please…….

{oh, just pretend that there’s a drumroll and make a woman happy, would ya?)

………….

Esteban and I………….

WENT TO THE FARMER’S MARKET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

You know how I’ve been starting out all of my weekend entries with how my plans to get to the farmer’s market got flumoxed by this thing or that? Well, I finally got there. And with my beloved hubby, too. And there were chickens there. And Esteban dashed my dreams once again of owning chickens. I want to someday live in a 200-year-old farmhouse overlooking either the Bay or Lake Michigan and have my own chickens who lay brown eggs and offer “cock a doodle doo”s to provide for pastoral moments. I also want to raise several adorable sheep and maybe use their wool to make lovely natural sweaters. Oh, and I only want to clean up after these animals once a week. Feeding them is not a problem, because I have have Martha Stewart moments while I do that. But anyway, I have right at this very moment, a carton of brown eggs laid by those very chickens at the farmer’s market. I also have three cucumbers, two tomatoes, and a pound of 4-year-old cheddar. Wooooo! Love the farmer’s market. Love it.

I’m very sniffly today and my face is itching like crazy. I took one of Esteban’s magic allergy pills and it is starting to go away, but I’m still a bit cranky over the whole ordeal. I feel like exfoliating my face with sandpaper.

Yesterday, Esteban required me to actually think about my Fantasy Football strategy. Let me tell you: it sucks. I don’t like games that are rigged to make it fair to the losers who don’t know how to play. This whole drafting nonsense. It sucks. I just want to go through the book and say “Here’s who I want on my team” and not have to fight through the other team owners to get them. I mean, if I’m going to do something with the word “Fantasy” in it, I should be able to draft whomever I want, not whomever is left over when it’s my turn? What the hell kind of fantasy is that? That’s like having some kind of sexual fantasy where your lover is the next door neighbor of Mel Gibson and you get to sleep on the wet spot.

Oh, and I named my fantasy team The Congested HedgeHogs.

Esteban wouldn’t let me go with my first two choices.

The Saucy Wenches was my first name, but Esteban had a problem with that, since not a single player I would be drafting would be female. I pointed out that not a single player of the Seattle SeaHawks is a bird, nor is there a single horse among the Denver Broncos.

Didn’t matter, he said. Pick something else.

I sighed, “Ok. The Flaming Drag Queens.” sidestepping the whole gender issue completely. Plus, flames equals scary, right? Esteban’s team is the Preble Predators (Preble being the suburb of Green Bay in which we live).

He countered with the fact that we’d be playing on a league with several older men. They wouldn’t understand and might take offense to my calling the players I would be drafting “Drag Queens”.

Thus, the Congested HedgeHogs.

He tried to talk me out of the “Congested” part, but I’m not budging. Have you ever seen a congested hedgehog? They are not to be trifled with. “How about just The Hedgehogs,” he asked.

Nope. That’s not even a little scary. Hedgehogs are pretty docile creatures. If you don’t bug them, they don’t bug you.

But if you’ve got a congested one…. well, let me tell you, you had better watch yourself, if you know what I mean. Thus, me and The Congested Hedgehogs will hopefully trounce the rest of the teams with their conventional names and score another point for athletic equal rights!

Well, off to make a lovely summer salad with my farmer’s market scores. Oh, it’s easy enough to make one, here’s how:

Slice several wonderfully ripe tomatoes and take out the strange larval-type seed things, because that’s just gross.

Wash any waxy stuff or whathaveyou off the cucumbers. You can peel it if you like, but I am usually lazy and leave the peelings on.

Grind about three turns of black pepper over the veggies in a bowl. Also dump in a little minced garlic (about a half a clove) and some basil.

Splash a little balsamic vinegar (about a tablespoon? I don’t know…. I just splash) and Extra Virgin Olive Oil (maybe 1 1/2 tablespoons? Again, I just splash… use more oil than vinegar) And don’t skimp on the price of these… if you’re going to buy cheap stuff, then just go get a damn Whopper and forget about it, ok? The vinegar should be at least a $10 bottle, but then, maybe I’m just a snob and you can ignore this all together.

Finally, crumble 4-6 oz of feta cheese and mix well. You can also add sliced black olives, but I usually feel exhausted at that point and ready to eat. Also, sometimes you can add a little salt, too, depending on your tomatoes acidity.

Enjoy! Let me know if you try it!

Touchdown Daddy Fantasies

I think I have pink eye again. Wash your hands well after reading this diary.

As I was working the four ten-hour shift thing this week, I’ve got tomorrow off. Sweet! I’m so very excited to do absolutely nothing. Oh, wait, not true. I must do the singing lesson thing. Wooohoo! Not singing actual words yet, but hopefully tomorrow will be the day. We’ll see.

Esteban has declared that we must clean the house tomorrow. He’s having his league’s fantasy football draft here on Sunday afternoon and it would be best if it didn’t reek of lingering cat urine and be littered with newspapers. Well, we think that Chelsea has stopped the peeing, but we’ll have to see. I’m thinking about getting some of that “Natural Solution” enzyme stuff to get rid of the smell.

Why is it that you have to spend extra dough to get a plug-in air freshener that will last a month, yet cat pee smell will last generations???? Three days after getting Tilly, she peed in my car. We had that car detailed three times with a special process. It went through countless hot 100+ summers and -50 winters. I spilled countless ounces of Diet Coke on the seat. And yet, four years later, we traded it in when we bought the truck, despite that it was better than our other car, for the simple reason that it always smelled like a Cat Lady’s house.

Then at one point, I was bringing home groceries in the other car and spilled a gallon of white vinegar in the trunk. We actually picked the Dill Pickle car over the Cat Pee car.

If they could figure out what it is in Cat Pee which makes it last so long or maybe made Cat Pee smell like Cinnamon Apples, they’d make a fortune. But then, maybe they’ve already figured that out and then realized that if they marketed the Cinnamon Apple Cat Pee (TM), everyone would buy exactly ONE package and then be set for life. Not good business sense. It’s a conspiracy.

I think the Abby Hoffman voice inside my head is bored and coming up with new theories.

Anyway, I really can’t be upset about the Fantasy Football league meeting at my house, because Esteban has determined that if I’m getting bunches of Fantasy Football projects when I’m NOT playing, think of how much better I’d be if I were actually participating in the game? One of the guys dropped out of his league and now I have the great honor of being the first female team owner in the history of their league.

Yep. Me and Gloria Steinem. Or maybe Marge Schott.

Me and Marge Schott. Yep. That’s closer.

No, wait. Me and that drunk guy who used to sing during the seventh inning stretch at the Cubs games. No, that metaphor really doesn’t work. I guess Marge Schott is the girl to make the metaphor work, except I can’t see myself being such a bitch.

Ok, I know. Me and that character that Goldie Hawn played in “Wildcats”… you know, the female football coach? Me and her. Yeah.

When I was fourteen, I had this strange fantasy going for awhile. I would fantasize that my dad was Mike Ditka, coach at the time of the Chicago Bears, and he had to take a leave of absence or some crap, so he declared that the only person that he trusted with his team was his beloved daughter (me). And everyone at the Bears didn’t argue with him, because he’s Ditka and you can’t really argue with Ditka, because he’ll spit a wad of ABC gum in your hair or something. So, hence, I was the Adhoc coach of the Chicago Bears and I was fighting a lot of harassment from some of the players, getting a lot of sexist comments and whatnot. But then, they started realizing that I knew my football and Jim McMahon started courting me, but I was torn between staying neutral to my players and dating the hot studly quarterback. And Jim was also nervous because I was Ditka’s daughter and well, he was pretty afraid of being spit at.

And then we won the Superbowl.

Yup. I don’t think I had your normal fourteen-year-old day dreams. It could be argued that I was watching too many Movies of the Week on ABC. Or maybe those are the kind of fantasies you have when you live in a football town and have an emotionally and physically distant father.

I still think Ditka would be a cool dad. One of those tough but loving dads. The kind who would make sure that you got home from your dates on time or he’d make you run laps.

Yup. Sweet.

If you signed up for a Gold Membership or made a donation to help out diaryland, I have to Thank You. If you haven’t or missed my entry this morning, go here to see what I’m talking about.

Oh, and if you’re like Virginia Mom and don’t participate in Diaryland other than reading and you make a donation anyway, well, let me tell you, a writer couldn’t have a better reader than that. I thank you for Diaryland, for helping to keep this around.

Virginia Mom, you have completely redeemed those minivans in my eyes. You never leave your email so I couldn’t send you an email the last time you left a message in the guestbook, but I just wanted to let you know that. Also, remember I’m a child of a hippy, so it’s pretty hard for me to refrain from taking up causes, but I will keep that in mind! I’ll probably still tell readers to go and tell other people “Happy Birthday” and stuff like that, though, but that’s free.

I bought a bunch more banner ads, so you all should be seeing my little banner again soon.

Also, whoever nominated me for Quoted: what a big honor! Thank you!

And since I’m tying up some loose ends here, if you are reading this from Quaker Oats or Ameritech in Appleton, send me an email. I’ve been seing those servers on my stats and I’d love to hear from you. Thanks!

My neighbors have a little garden hose thing (I think it’s officially a Garden Hose Cozy or something) in the shape of a big turtle. It hides their hose.

This morning, the hose was strewn about the lawn and it looked as though the turtle had lost its intestines everywhere.

Why don’t people think before they buy such things? Why?

Don’t forget to wash your hands with anti-bacterial soap.

A pledge drive of sorts

Dear Readers,

I’ve decided, in honor of PBS pledge week, to dedicate today’s entry to a plea.

I’m getting a little worried about the state of Diaryland.

Andrew has been shouldering the cost of servers and whatnot all on his lonesome for some time now. He instituted the Gold Membership to help defray some of those costs. I signed up for a year and I have to tell you, I’ve have totally gotten my $30 worth already, and I’ve still got ten months on my subscription. It’s a complete bargain.

Yesterday, Andrew actually added a “sale” of sorts which would allow non-Gold members to purchase 20,000 banner ads. Then he mentioned that he had set up a place that you could donate money to Diaryland if you wanted to.

I’m thinking that it must be getting pretty harsh for him to continue footing the bill for the server and such. I’m thinking that if he actually mentioned that people could make donations, that it must be getting a lot for him to bear on his own. Andrew is way too cool to go scoping for money for any other reason.

So I’m getting a little concerned. There’s been a lot of free sites folding due to expenses. My day is often made brighter by the likes of Unclebob, Not-A-Finger, and the like. I LOVE hearing from my readers. I love the “friendships” I’ve made online with you. If Diaryland went away, we wouldn’t have this forum. I know that I personally would not have the tenacity to update in straight html like other online journalers.

So here’s my plea: if you enjoy Diaryland, help Andrew out. Either buy a Gold Membership, a few extra banners, or donate $5 or $10 to Diaryland.

And if you feel a little bummed that today’s entry was such a gyp, think about how much it would suck if there was no Diaryland at all.

Hmmmm?

Lots of love,

Weet

People magazine and the National Enquirer are NOT a good summer reading list

First an FYI: pictures have been added to the two Gencon entries. here and here.

Big Brother 2 has me completely in its thrall. God help me, I actually find Will charming, despite his evil tendencies. In the beginning, I thought Hardy was a doll, but now I’m finding myself rooting for Kent, as he truly seems more genuine. Hardy is just fooling himself. Hardy has convinced himself that he’s trying to help other more worthy people win the game, but in actuality, he will be doing this by bringing himself to the final three, at which point the voting is out of his hands. He could theorhetically then be voted in by the jury and never be morally held responsible for being evil.

I believe it’s in Isaiah: Woe to them who call evil good and good evil.

Don’t be impressed that I knew that’. It was in the epilogue to ‘A Prayer For Owen Meany’ by John Irving. I’ve never even looked it up. I’m taking John’s word for it.

Speaking of John Irving, his newest book ‘The Fourth Hand’ has an incredibly sexy woman (who is not traditionally beautiful but sexy just the same) who lives in Green Bay. I think this is a shout-out to moi, non? I’d like to know the story behind John Irving picking Green Bay as a setting. He describes our sad ‘riverside mall’ and the mountains of coal.

If he was actually here, scouting out information, I will likely kill myself. John Irving is my idol. John Irving is a literary god. That being said, ‘The Fourth Hand’ is not so good. It’s ok. In fact, his last three books have been not that great, but his writing in ‘A Prayer For Owen Meany’ earns him an eternal spot of honor in my heart on its own. His cumulative works (including ‘The Hotel New Hampshire’ and ‘The Cider House Rules’ are exceptional as well). Irving has been my favorite author since I was twelve and read ‘The World According to Garp’.

And now that I’ve plugged John Irving, I feel as though I must plug T.C. Boyle (also known as T. Coraghesson Boyle). He is a fabulous writer, particularly of short stories. I highly recommend picking up ‘If The River Was Whiskey’ or ‘Descent of Man’ (both of which are short story collections) the next time you are at a big bookstore with a coffee shop in it. It disturbs me that I’m the only person that lists him as a favorite author in their profile. Maybe no one knows how to spell ‘Coraghesson’.

And if you haven’t yet read ‘A Prayer for Owen Meany’, go read it, dammit. That’s your summer reading list. Oh, and also check out ‘A Handmaid’s Tale’ by Margaret Atwood. Also a very good read. I purchased that book at the little book store up in Manitowish Waters and inhaled it in one afternoon. Now I always associate it with camping and summer, even though it’s not particular to either. But anyway, I have no doubt that you’ll love it as much as I do. Oh, and another recommendation for a fun summer read: ‘Microserfs’ by Douglas Coupland.

Man, I just listed my favorites on my profile. I might as well make it a full house: Also read ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ by William Shakespeare. If that’s too daunting (and it shouldn’t be, it’s not too tough people’ much lighter than, for instance, ‘Measure for Measure’ or the weighty ‘Richard III’), rent the Kenneth Branaugh movie instead and laugh at the sad performance of Keanu Reeves as Don John. The robotic Evil Ted in ‘Bill And Ted’s Bogus Journey’ had more versatility and emotion than his Don John portrayal.

There. Now go. And stop reading those damn Oprah books. Oh, except for Toni Morrison, who is acceptable, especially ‘The Bluest Eye’. But Wally Lamb should burn in hell. Just so you know.

(sigh)

I should write more instead of reading everyone else’s stuff. I read that ‘Ellen Foster’ thing that Oprah ended up putting on her list and it was SO pale and shallow, I could barely stand it. Some of the crap that’s getting published and lauded as being literary makes me ill. I should just go back to school and get my Ph.D in English and do something other than working technical support. My sister Mo (notice the use of the pseudonym there? Nice, huh Amy? —ooops) told me that I was too talented and should be doing something else.

Just go read your books. That is all.

Oh, I’d love for you to leave me recommendations for MY summer reading list on The Guestbook but I must warn you, I am a literary snob who conversly hates Trollope. However, I welcome any suggestion!

Also, make Caribou’s day today and sign her guestbook! It’s her birthday today!!!!!

Hey, have you read these recent entries?

People magazine and the National Enquirer are NOT a good summer reading list

Eye Snot, Ewe Snot

Here’s one of those “deep thoughts” kind of diary entries that are such the rage at DLand:

My eyes keep getting eye boogers because of my allergies or pink eye or something.

It wouldn’t really bother me, except for the fact that I’ll be sitting here, blinking like normal and then all of the sudden I am completely blind in one eye!

It’s an Insta-Cataract.

And then it’s gone, and I resume blinking. Freaky.

Yeah, I know. I’ll just stick to the long, rambling types of diary entries. I figured as much.

The one with all the hygiene

Some other random thoughts on my GenCon experience:

At one point, Joel and Esteban competed in an event called The Dorkathalon.

While I’m somewhat embarrassed that my husband competed in The Dorkathalon, I’m pleased to note that he didn’t do very well in it. One would think that success at a Dorkathalon would denote the success that you have being a Dork. I don’t know how well Joel did, but to my chagrin, he actually purchased a t-shirt, which he then WORE which read The Dorkathalon 2001.

I’m not kidding. I couldn’t make this stuff up if I tried.

I spoke of the various costumes at GenCon, but didn’t give too much detail, so here it is: many (but not as many as you’d expect) Star Trek Klingons and what have you, a girl who had painted her entire body blue, many Goth Geeks and a girl who had made a mini-skirt outfit out of black electrical tape. And she wasn’t wearing underwear. I hope for her sake, that she was sporting a Brazilian because removal of said outfit could get a tad painful otherwise.

Just one of many freaks at GenCon… I’m not sure what he’s supposed to be. Also, I don’t know what’s worse…the outfit itself or the fact that he’s sporting the worst farmer tan I’ve seen in a long time.

I don’t think that I fully explained the smell of GenCon, either. The smell. Oh god. The smell. It was not normal smell’. There was a tinge of something else. Geek pheromones, I think. I guess at one point, some people were walking around with little swag-like packs of a new ‘game’ called Hygiene. The packs contained a toothbrush, toothpaste and a bar of soap.

See? I could never come up with something so funny if I tried.

After GenCon, Mitchsuru , Esteban and I went to dinner at an Italian Restaurant. We felt a little underdressed, in our t-shirts and shorts. We sat down in their Bellini dining room and our waiter swished up to us and promptly said ‘I’ll be right with you gentlemen.’ Yep. That’s right. For the first time in my life, I’d been mistaken for a man. Normally, with a rack like mine, it’s pretty apparent that I’m a woman, but given my sweaty short hair and the fact that my makeup had long ago melted off my face, I could see his confusion. It was at that moment that I decided that I must grow my hair long again. I never want someone to look at me and say ‘She’s a MAN, baby!’

The other oddity about our waiter. When he returned to our table after insulting my femininity, he was apparently upset about the fact that Esteban had not yet removed his napkin, so Swishy the Waiter unfurled the napkin and daintly placed it on Esteban’s lap. I’m very proud of the fact that Esteban did not react the way most men in Northeastern Wisconsin might have acted in the same circumstance. I could see other men recoiling in terror and protectively guarding their crotches from a waiter such as ours. In fact, I could have seen an Esteban of yore reacting that way as well. He’s come a long way, baby. I’m very proud of him.

Weetabix: subverting redneck culture one man at a time.

The quest for a nice shiny shower continues. Ward and June called me yesterday at work. For those of you who are playing along at home: I’m currently instigating a replacement of our shower surround. Long ago when my house was born, there was inexplicably a window in the shower. Then, in it’s teenage years, the house gained an addition of a dining room off the kitchen, which blocked the window in the bathroom. Or maybe it was when they added two bedrooms off the dining room that the window became blocked, I’m not certain. Whatever case, the original owner in their questionable wisdom, decided to turn that blocked window into a shelf for the shower. Now you may be wondering how one goes about doing that? Well, let me tell what one should NOT do: one should NOT simply add boards across the window as water from the shower will sit on that shelf and rot everything way, as is the nature of wood. In fact, one should not get anywhere near a shower with wood which has not specifically been treated for shower usage. And when one realizes that much to late, one should not hang a little teeny second shower curtain over the shower shelf in hopes of postponing the water damage. It’s just not a good idea. So, when we purchased the house five years ago, we knew this was a problem as there was water rot happening already, but I’ve finally grown so sick of it that I’m putting forth the winds of change.

Last week, I dropped $170 on a shower surround and various glues to hold the surround to the wall. Then Esteban declared that he wanted new fixtures for the tub, to replace our perfectly working but outdated fixtures. Fine, I had no problem with that. Until I found out how much that cost. Last night, I dropped another $174 last night to replace the shower head and the thing that turns on the shower. It’s ridiculous. Every home improvement project budget should be simply doubled, because it always costs twice what you expect that it will cost.

Grrr.

Thankfully, Esteban Sr. likes to play Bob Vilas, so we’re getting the labor for free (well, it’s costing us a bunch of Diet Pepsi, actually, and I should probably make him some cookies or something).

Anyway, that’s my day. Currently I have no shower and Dad is calling me every hour with a plumbing report. I am Jack’s unwashed foot.

Never remove a man from your list…… never.

Just so you know, I’m not done writing this… what’s here will stay, but I haven’t finished this entry, and I’m taking a break because my freaking hands are tired… (god, I’m windy sometimes)

Wow.

What a weekend.

At first I thought I had met a man on my list, but then I realized that he was a ‘Top Ten’ and not really an Official Listee.

There was pressing of flesh. There was mention of ‘sucking’. He looked longingly into my eyes. He beckoned to me as I walked away with resolve. Damn Antonio Banderas. No, that’s not who I met, that’s the guy who fouled everything all up. Damn him all to hell.

But first I must start at the beginning.

Yesterday, I awoke at 5:30 a.m. after sleeping nary 6 hours (which, as you all know, is roughly half the amount of sleep I require on a normal weekend day). I was going to go the Farmer’s Market before leaving for Milwaukee at 8:00 with Kim V and her husband, who I’m giving the pseudonym of ‘God’, so I got dressed and hopped into the Monte and busted over the Farmer’s Market. Then I realized that while I had plenty of time to go to the Farmer’s Market and shop, if I actually purchased any wonderful, locally grown produce, I would not have time to run back home and throw it into the fridge and then run back to Kim and God’s place. Thus I had two choices: either shop and bring all of my wonderful produce to Milwaukee and back or forego the shopping and get over it. I chose the latter. So I instead had about an hour to kill (I suppose I could have just walked around the Farmer’s Market anyway, but what fun would THAT have been? Hmmm? None, I can assure all.) so I put gas in the car and purchased snacks (which latter melted in the unbelievably cloistering heat). Then I cruised around Kim and God’s ritzy neighborhood until I could stand it no more, pulling into their driveway fifteen minutes early. As it turns out, they had also been ready an hour early and were just killing time waiting for me. Ah, the irony, non?

Then we headed out to Appleton, where we stopped at my most favorite of restaurants, The Machine Shed. I’d never been there for breakfast but I was pretty sure that they had a good one, since I’ve never had a bad meal there. They also had a pretty impressive breakfast buffet going on, which Kim and God opted for, but I really wanted their mouth-watering country-fried steak, so that’s what I ordered. They were so sweet, they waited until my meal came before they partook in the joys of home-like food. Oh, something I never knew about the Machine Shed. You can get a free egg with your meal. You just have to say ‘I love eggs’ and they give you a free egg as long as you have a breakfast with eggs in it. As my breakfast included two eggs, I chimed up with ‘I love eggs’ to get a third egg.

If you’ve ever eaten breakfast with me, you’ll know this: almost unbelievably, in the morning, my eyes are far bigger than my stomach. I will order half the menu because I’m ravenous and then eat three bites and say ‘I’m done’. I’ve never in my entire life eaten two pancakes in one sitting. It’s not so much that I over-order, it’s rather that I want a little of everything. My perfect breakfast meal would be one egg, a half a pancake, two pieces of bacon, two forkfuls of hash browns, a bite of muffin and 68 ounces of orange juice. I love me my vitamin C, ok?

Thus, I picked at my food (which the Machine Shed’s kitchen staff exacerbated by accidentally giving me biscuits and gravy rather than an English Muffin, so the waitress just brought me an English muffin. Well, naturally, I would have three bites of the free biscuits and gravy as well, right?) while God and Kim ate a nutritious and filling breakfast. This is my entire fault, I realize. I know that I do that. I know that I’m going to be hungry two hours later. Normally, I have Esteban along and he reminds me that I’m ordering way too much and I’m going to be hungry later. Not that he actually stops me from ordering, but I always make a mental note that I will be hungry later.

Then we were off again. The plan was that I wanted to stop in Oshkosh to visit a catalog outlet store. Honestly, Kim really wanted to go as well, but God wanted to keep on schedule. Whatever. They kept driving and I went to the store. They had some extremely cool stuff, but the one shelf I was going to buy ended up getting copped by another customer (my fault, I snooze, I lose).

Then I continued solo down to Milwaukee. I ended up hitting gazillions of traffic and had to urinate so much I could actually taste the acrid pee in the back of my throat. I know that was a bit graphic, but it truly doesn’t do it justice. I was actually having fantasies about getting out of the car and dropping trou right on the side of the highway, as all of the traffic for the State Fair and the Brewers Game watched.

The best part of the trip down was a moment when I was passing a bright yellow VW bug. Apparently, a little child was strapped in the backseat, but all I could see was its raised fist through the rear window. It was very poetic and I wished that I had my camera along (it would not be the last time I had that thought yesterday). My drive down was far less dramatic than God and Kim’s though’ they were witness to a drive-by mooning.

I miss out on everything.

Finally, I get to Milwaukee and find Esteban’s hotel. They won’t tell me what room he’s in, but they’ll connect me on the courtesy phone. No one is in his room. I don’t have my cell phone. I finally con the concierge to let me make a long distance call to his cell phone. Turns out Esteban is four blocks away at some auction. He tells me to go purchase my pass and then find him, as he is in the middle of bidding for whatever.

Fine. I go the convention center and apparently, it’s Freak Central. The entire cast and crew of every Star Wars movie were represented in costume. Apparently, there is also a very popular role-playing game called Vampire or something, and it involves live action play and costumes, so there were several Goth Geeks on hand at every function.

GenCon is very strange. There are some people who are so out of it that I am actually embarrassed FOR them. Not that I’m not a geek. Esteban informs me that I am, for the simple reason that I know HTML and maintain a web page. This is not the venue to argue this point, but for the sake of this entry, I’ll go with that. For the most part, any one of the attendees of Gen Con could be perceived as ‘normal’ if viewed outside of GenCon, but as a whole, the similarities between the attendees are striking. Apparently, a black Something t-shirt is the street clothes of choice for a geek. There were an inordinate number of black t-shirts with whatever on them (Deep Space Nine, D&D ‘funny’ sayings, pleas to Bill Gates for employment, etc). Also, many many glasses. And pale legs. Lots and lots of overly white people. I mean, don’t get me wrong, it is possible to use my picture as the ‘Before’ part of a Coppertone ad, but some of these people positively glowed in the dark.

Also, I’m not used to being around so many men who have no clue how to act around a woman. I didn’t realize how much I don’t notice this preferred behavior. I thought it was how civilized people treated each other, however I was mistaken. At one point, I was walking into a building behind a guy and he let the door close in my face. Another point, apparently I had invaded another geek’s personal space perimeter and he gave me a pissed off geeky sneer. I felt like saying to these people ‘Look, I know that you guys have never had a girlfriend and I KNOW WHY TOO!!!!’

But I didn’t.

I then tried to find Esteban. According to the map inside the official magazine of Gen Con, he was located in the Wisconsin Center, which is an arena. Fine. I walked to the Arena and proceeded to walk around the perimeter of the building twice. On the floor of the arena, there were hundreds of curtained off areas filled with people who were gaming.

I stopped one geek (wearing a black t-shirt, by the way) and said ‘I’m looking for Whatever Hall’ and he got all confused’ ‘Uhhh, I’m not sure where that is.’ ‘Oh,’ I said, ‘Well, if I show you this map, maybe you can point me to it?’ He looked positively stricken. Obviously, this was the most contact he had had with female (excluding relatives and convenience store clerks) since he graduated from high school. He wiped a little sweat off his brow, ‘Uh, I gotta get back to my game.’

Where he would be saving imaginary damsels in distress, no doubt.

I approached a LESS dorky looking guy and asked him and he pointed me to the right location. You see, the map was fucking wrong. They showed Whatever Hall as being attached to the Arena. It was not. It was in a whole other BUILDING. I thanked him and assured him that he was attractive to the opposite sex, for which he seemed very relieved. His friends looked to him in awe and he puffed out his chest a little bit.

Then I stopped in the bathroom (yes, it had been THAT long since I had gotten there! Unreal, isn’t it?) and flipped open the program to see who was going to be there.

I stopped breathing. There he was, smiling out at me from the glossy nerd bible in my hands.

James Fucking Marsters.

Spike.

Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

The guy I almost listed on my list, but substituted Antonio Banderas for instead.

Yes. Before you say it, this is EXACTLY like that episode from Friends with Isabella Rosselini. Exactly.

Except I’m not a freak like Ross and I certainly would have never laminated the damn list.

Anyway, I find Esteban and I can barely contain myself.

‘Do you know who is here?’ I asked.

‘Gary Gygax?’ He said, knowing already who I meant. He knew all along. He knew and didn’t tell me. Sheesh.

‘Jamesfuckingmarstersfrombuffy!’ I exclaimed.

‘Oh.’ He said, continuing to watch the auction, bidding intermittently.

Can you believe that? No excitement whatsoever. I checked out the schedule. Oh my, he’d be signing autographs at 2:00! It was 1:15 right then.

I turned to Esteban. ‘We have to go right now.’

Esteban, however, had other plans. ‘No, you go do what you need to do’ call me on my cell phone when you are done.’ He resumed bidding on the Tome of Insipid Lore or whatever the hell it was that he was trying to buy.

‘Do you realize that Spike is on my list?’ I asked, forgetting that I had removed him in favor of Antonio Banderas (although technically, I have two spots open thus James could be subbed in at any time). ‘There is nothing stopping me from having raunch vampire sex with James Marsters. Nothing.’ I said emphatically.

Esteban checked my hand at that statement. I had forgotten to wear my wedding ring. That would have been suspect except for the fact that he knew that I didn’t know that Spike was going to be at the convention. Esteban started to remove his wedding band and slip it onto my finger.

I scoffed at him. ‘The List doesn’t care about wedding rings. The List is the antithesis of wedding rings!!!’ And bebopped out of the Dork Auction or whatever it was.

I scurried back to the convention hall. There I met up with a lady whose name I later learned was Pam. We learned that James was NOT yet at the convention and the autography signing had been postponed until 6:30 pm, but there would be an informational meeting across the street at the Hilton where we would learn more information about what was keeping James.

Pam and I hustled over to the Hilton, which incidentally was the hotel where I would be staying that night. Together, we booked up to this informational meeting where the lady who plays Na’Toth on Babylon Five informed us that he had been up all night filming the fifth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer until 6 a.m. this morning and had missed his flight to Milwaukee, but he didn’t want to disappoint his fans and was flying out at that very moment.

An aside here: That Julie Caitlin Brown who plays the lizard lady on Babylon Five is scarily skinny. All I kept thinking was this: if girls like her look normal on television and girls like Calista Flockhart look skinny, what must the skinny television girls look like in real life? If they turn sidewise, do they disappear??? What the fuck? And if that’s the kind of chick that sexy James Fucking Marsters is flying away from, won’t he be in for a sweet surprise when he lays his snarky goodness on a bodaciously round Weetabix action?

Then I went back to the main convention and met up with Esteban and his gaggle of geeks. I had some time to kill until James would be arriving, and I was beginning to get a huge headache from lack of food and caffeine (that monkey is solidly riding on my back, thank you very much), so we walked around the convention floor and got some greasy convention food at exorbitant prices. Then I decided that I had better go and line up, but there was not a line present where he would be. No problem, there’s plenty of time, so I figured I would go and get a camera since I was going to see James Marsters, so I bid the gang ‘adieu’ and off I went. I ran to a nearby Walgreens and got a throw-away camera with a flash and also a big bottle of Dasani Water. Then I figured I’d be standing in line for awhile, so I popped over to B&N and picked up a magazine and a Blackberry Sage iced tea, which I drank on the way back to the convention.

When I arrived, I saw that what had been a non-existant line when I left, had grown to colossal proportions. It was roughly four people wide and stretched no less than 400 yards, wrapping all the way around the perimeter of the convention hall. What follows is possibly my darkest moral hour. We here at Weetabix.diaryland.com do not condone the improper and morally bankrupt actions which are represented here in the next paragraph. As I was staring at the line in disbelief, I spotted my acquaintances from the informational meeting, Pam and her friend (whose name I can no longer remember but will refer to her as the Dragon Lady, because she had purchased a large dragon/sea serpent thingy and it was drapped so chicly around her neck during the entire time, like a mythical fur stole of sorts) were standing there in the line. I mosied on up to them and began chatting with them, with no intention of cutting the line. Just asked them how long they’d been waiting, how I’d tried to line up earlier but no one was there, so I left to get a camera. Now I was pretty much regretting this, since the line was now four football fields long and three people thick and there would be no way that he was going to be able to get through all of these people before his other commitments that evening. Dragon Lady then suggests that I join them in the line. And I did. I know. I can’t believe it. The guilt is tremendous today. Tremendous. And yet, I find myself drawn to a life of crime, given the fabulous rewards that I now realize that it has to offer. Stop looking at me like that. We’re talking about James Fucking Marsters here. You’d have done the same thing. You know you would have.

Pam, The Dragon Lady and the Lady who I grabbed and yelled “WOOOOO!” when we thought that we saw James at one point…… it was a bonding moment.

Thus we waited. And waited. My 32 ounce bottle of Dasani was a godsend until the bladder began to complain. However, as a kilted Security Guard informed me, if I left the line, I would lose my spot, thus peeing was out of the question. What was it with Saturday and my inability to pee when I needed to. I wish that I would have picked up a pack of Depends undergarments or something. I could have sold those mofos for $5 a pair in that line.

Standing in the line was not only physically painful. We were also subject to countless people asking why were standing in the line. The pain in my pelvis began to incite me to answer with smartass comments like ‘Oh, we’re waiting to see Ray Parks who played Darth Maul’ and ‘Oh, I saw a line, so I got in it’ and ‘I dunno’ because I got sick of replying ‘James Marsters’ and then answering the ‘Whosdat?’ that inevitably followed. Two and a half hours later, the doors to the room opened. I actually got so excited I grabbed one of the ladies in line and started to shake her! WOOOOOO! I know. I am exactly twelve years old. After an hour, the line had progressed for us to be close enough to SEE James. He seemed nice and kind and very genuine. And hot. Did I mention how fucking hot he was? Those cheekbones are killer. One of the guys behind me actually thought that maybe he had sideburns that made his cheeks look like that, but no, he’s just got incredible cheekbones, people. At one point, someone handed him a baby and he posed for the picture in a scary Spike way. Then he kissed that baby. I have never wanted to be wearing diapers so bad in my whole life. Plus, do they have any idea how much money they could get for that baby on Ebay?

Oh no! Don’t let Spike eat that baby!!!!
Also, there was a mean older lady who had the great fortune of sitting next to James the entire time. She kept barking out to people, yelling ‘Remember, you may only bring him one item to sign’ after he kindly signed a calendar for an 80-year-old grandmother. Then she got up at one point and tripped on the podium. What did kind James do? He jumped up and helped her to her feet. Can you believe how yummy he is?

Then, at one point, he looked up from his many signings and spotted me in the line. His eyes lingered on me, following the outline of my sweaty body. He cocked a little sheepish grin at me and stood up. I approached the podium and he jumped over the table and said ‘Hey there, Lil’ Bix, I hear that I lost out to Antonio Banderas on your List’ but I’ll bet he can’t do this!’ and he grabbed me, bent me backwards and proceeded to vamp out, just like on Buffy, and snarl as he looked at my pale exposed neck. Ok, not really. Finally, the fabulous moment arrived when it was my turn to approach him. He shook my hand and said ‘Hi’, his strong grip lingering in my sweaty hand. I was transfixed by his eyes. He has the bluest eyes. I think we may be related, as I’ve been told that my eyes are that blue, but I’m pretty used to them, but now I know how it is to look at someone with striking blue eyes that isn’t my sister or mom or myself.

I don’t even have the excuse of caffeine withdrawl

I’m grumpy today and I have nothing to write about.

I know. You’re shocked.

You Weet? You always have something to blather on about for pages and pages. How very unlike you.

Yeah. Whatever. I was going to write about Mariah Carey’s insanity but Unclebob did a much better job of it. And I hate her. But I would like to add this: I’m just waiting for the Mariah Carey video that is just her in a naked porno situation, singing her weird dolphin-noise screeches.

Also, I think Julia Robert’s hair right now is atrocious. I know that she doesn’t like it all big and curly, ala Pretty Woman, but it really flatters her’ sort of evens out her weird long nose/face thing and her jumongous mouth.

I was thinking last night that I’d write about my jellyfish misadventure in Key West, but I just don’t feel like it. Too grumpy. Maybe another time.

Esteban is in Milwaukee at GenCon, which is a huge gathering of the geekiest people in the land. He feels it’s a big waste of his time now and doesn’t know why he bothered coming down for the four day convention. I’m driving down tomorrow with Kim V and her husband. Personally, I just wanted to spend the weekend in Milwaukee as I can only summon up enough coolness for about a three-hour period at GenCon. After that, I start to shake and desire a pocket protector and a Gene Roddenberry commemorative plate set from the Franklin Mint. I asked Esteban what he wanted to do in the afternoon, after I lost interest in the convention. That seemed a reasonable question: after all, he’s been at this thing for three days and there’s not all that much to actually see. How many tables of 8-sided die can you see before you get a bit bored? Not many, I’d think. I just want to scope out the Buffy merchandise, actually. Also, the last time I went, five years ago, I got a key ring with a test tube filled with blue liquid and a little plastic alien fetus. That was groovy. Anyway, after I mentioned the plan for tooling around Milwaukee after we got bored, Esteban became self-righteous.

‘We’re not going to ‘tool around Milwaukee’. You’re coming here for the convention, so you’re going to spend the day at the convention!’

I love him dearly, but his weird sense of propriety is very annoying sometimes. Another weird thing: he feels that I have too many CDs in my car. I’m very lazy and never put the CDs back in the jewel boxes, so I leave them stacked up in my CD holder in the console. This bothers Esteban. He grumps at me that I should be putting them back correctly. Never mind the fact that most of the CDs are burns, so I don’t even HAVE the jewel boxes for them. Never mind the fact that it takes TWO HANDS to open a jewel box and last time I checked, I needed at least one hand to drive. I mentioned that I wanted one of those things that you slide the bare CDs into that sits on the visor. He doesn’t want a little pressure mark in the visor where the thing would clip on. I pointed out that the garage door opener was clipped on the very same visor and he retorted that THAT mark did not exactly please him either. It basically ticks him off because I JUST SHOULD NOT HAVE SO MANY CDs IN THE CAR, DAMMIT and the CDs I do have should be PROPERLY PROTECTED!!! Then he reiterated that someone was going to break into the car to steal my many mixed CDs. While I’ll admit that I do compile some rocking mixes, I doubt that anyone would commit grand larceny to get them, although with the demise of Napster, possibly the likelihood has increased somewhat. Basically the whole thing comes down to the fact that he objects to my randomness.

He’s so anal sometimes. It’s ridiculous.

I guess I did have something to write about. Go me.

Remote? I’d hate to see it with a cord!

Yesterday afternoon at work, I was speaking on the phone with a gentleman in Tampa, walking through various procedures on the computer with him, when suddenly there was a HUMONGOUS BOOOOOM!!!!!!!!! Then my monitor went sort of tie-died bluish purple and the phone went dead.

We had been struck by lightening. As I am writing this, the hardware for the phone system is a melted heap on the roof. For someone who does the majority of her work over the phone, this means one thing:

PARTAH!!!

Strangely enough, I ended up staying extra late last night, simply because I was getting so much software testing done because I wasn’t getting a million phone calls. It’s amazing how smart you get when you’re not constantly being distracted.

Thus, this morning, I am phone-free. It’s nice. I’m thinking about leaving and coming back. Technically, I should be able to do that, as I am salaried, but I have a feeling that would be frowned upon. I should bend over and pull down my pants and say ‘Kiss my huge white butt, bureaucratic tools!’ but I’m too much of a sheep.

Then I had volleyball after work. Nary two hours after our building gets struck by lightening, and not even twenty-four hours after an athlete perishes due to the oppressive heat. And we played in the rain. The referee put a plastic bread bag over his hat to keep his head dry. The sand had the consistency of cow poo. We kicked their butts. The referee, at one point, tried to demoralize the opposing team so that they’d give up faster and the game would be over quicker. One of their team members made a sand sculpture instead of playing. She announced, ‘I’m making a portrait of our ref’ and proceeded to sculpt a very large and scary reproduction of male genitalia. I then said, in all innocence ‘That’s not our ref. I’ve SEEN our ref and THAT’S not our ref.’ Which sounded as though I was commenting on the size of the sand penis and inferring that I had seen his penis. I was not. I was simply stating that the sand penis bore no resemblance to our ref. I felt that he looked more like a bag of Jiffy Pop with that strange headgear. Strangely, he was more upset with me than he was the sculptor. Doesn’t matter. We kicked their butts just the same. Our losing streak has ended!

Scientists have developed an implant which gives women an orgasm at the touch of a button.

Oh. My. God.

At first read, my internal hairy-legged feminist got her dander up. I mean, what the hell? A woman’s partner no longer needs to devote time to foreplay? Must everything be remote-controlled in our society? Is this somehow a female counterpart to Viagra? Will this only serve to further the objectification of the woman as a sexual object to society? I can already see the marketing–‘Turn your little lady from a proper librarian to a drooling nymphomaniac with just the flick of a switch’. And then I started to be all sorts of disgruntled. Our medical insurance did not always cover birth control pills on our plan, because they were ‘optional’ and they were a Health Management plan. From a business aspect, that doesn’t even make sense, as I would think that a $25 pack of pills each month would cost them far less than a pregnancy and a baby! Suddenly, Viagra was released and they covered Viagra. Women complained and they grudgingly covered the birth control pills because they no longer had the ‘optional’ argument. That whole deal just speaks to how subtlety sexist the world continues to be. Also, it seems like the epitome of a male invention. A remote control that gives a woman an orgasm. From the same scientists who brought you the remote that automatically brings you a beer, with customizable buttons for domestic, imports, draft and frosty mugs.

At that point, I had worked myself so far away from the topic of ‘Instant Orgasms’ that I had to tell myself to walk it off and get a grip. Then the Hedonist side of me elbowed the Hairy-Legged Feminist out of the way and said ‘Wait a minute. Think this through, woman! Instant Orgasms!‘ And I rethought that whole thing and came to a conclusion.

Where I can get me one of those things?

Think of it!

Sitting at an interminably long meeting: ‘And you can clearly see from this chart that the Marketing Effectiveness of the competitor’s product shows clear gains in the Hispanic demographic—– Weetabix? You have a strange look on your face’.’

Grocery checkout lines would no longer need to be a bore. If you ever needed to pretend that you were excited about something, now it wouldn’t be as difficult! My drive to work would definitely be more fun.

Would this remote get lost, just like the one to our VCR in our bedroom? Would it get shoved down between the bed and the bed frame, making the button continuously pressed down? Would I even care? I’d be willing to bet that I’d have a virtual warehouse of extra batteries around the house, because, damn, that thing should NEVER have dead batteries!

The possibilities are endless. Sign me up!

Yea, though I walk through the valley of sleepiness, I feel no grogginess. My Diet Coke comforts me.

Well, I’ve given up.

It’s 8:39 A.M. and I have downed the better part of a 32 oz McDonald’s Diet Coke.

This is not my finest hour.

I decided that I had proved my point. After all, I wanted to know that I could give it up if I wanted to’that I was not powerless over caffeine. And right now, I’m choosing to drink Diet Coke. But I can give it up anytime I want to. And the fact that I have more in common with Cleopatra (the Queen of Denial) has nothing to do with it. The important thing is that I am not caffeine’s bitch. This is just like the time that ‘The Blair Witch Project’ made me throw up in the movie theatre in front of Kim V (which is just so awful and horrible and I am forever in her debt because she was so cool about it. I’d rather take off all my clothes than throw up in front of someone. How humiliating). I had to go to the movie a second time, just to prove that I wasn’t some pansy-assed motion sick freak.

So now that I’ve proven that I can do it, I’ve decided that I would instead reserve my energy and willpower for more important tasks, such as rolling incredibly large boulders up hills or having my liver eaten out by ravens.

Damn. Diet Coke is gone. Headache starting already.

How awesome is Esteban? Well, let me tell you:

First off, he sent me roses at work yesterday. Guys: if you want to increase the impact of flowers for your female-type person, send them to her at work, where all of her co-workers can crowd around her and ‘Ooooh’ and ‘Ahhh’ at them. That’s all we want. It’s really pretty simple, actually, and I can hardly believe that I have to spell it out, but so here it is. And Esteban has that figured out. And no, I wasn’t mad at him and it wasn’t for anything special. He said I sounded sad when he talked to me on the phone during lunch (in actuality, I was probably almost in a coma at that point, as it was pre-sugar rush). What a sweetheart.

Then, he cleaned out the refrigerator and cleaned out all of the ucky Tupperware containers and everything. Then he took out most of the garbage.

I am so darned lucky.

Maybe he’s feeling guilty as he’s leaving again today for another four days. First Banff, now Milwaukee. I’m going to go down and spend the weekend with him though, so that should be fun. I’m still darned lucky.

I love caffeine. MMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sound of Weetabix kissing her icy cold bottle of Diet Coke

(Cue music of Hyper Addiction, Camera pans to seductive bottle of Diet Coke with luscious little water beads, just within reach of Weetabix’s twitching hand)

One of the perks of working with a lot of manufacturers: sometimes they send in new products. Today, we got a package of Pepperidge Farm cookies called Bliss.

There has never been a more accurately named product in the history of the world.

Think really fancy Oreo cookies but the cream doesn’t taste like lard.

If you see them on a grocery store shelf, run very quickly away because before you know it, you will be selling your firstborn child for yet another package of Bliss cookies.

They’re almost better than caffeine. They taste better, but don’t have the kicky side effects. Maybe if I crumbled some Vivarin on top, I’d have the perfect mid-morning snack.

Yep. Not my finest hour.
