I’m feeling like a nice juicy phlebotomy sammich!

Bonjour! It is I, Weetabix!

I have ze urge to affect ze French accent today!

Moi thinks it is to offset ze Mulletification of moi’s brain at yon Journey concert.

Last night, I stopped by a local dairy/deli to pick up some pizzas and ice cream upon request from Esteban, who, since he works at home 90% of the time, does not see fit to get in the car just to run errands and relies instead for me to run around town hither and yon, picking up food, dropping off videos and getting the car’s oil changed. Um, where was I? Oh yes.

As I’m waiting at the cash register for the world’s slowest cashier to place my ice cream and two pizzas into a bag (I kid you not, this took at least three minutes. She unpacked and packed the bag twice then I somehow ended up with two bags but I left, just to get the hell out of there), I watched a girl build a sandwich for a customer who had wandered off to peruse the rest of the store.

She put on the clear lunch lady plastic gloves. Then she placed her hand on top of the flat sub bun and started to cut. Then, as the blade neared one of her fingers, she gasped and pulled her hand back. She recovered, began slicing again and then winced. She lifted up her hand and I could see that her glove was starting to fill up with blood. She made a face and then put the bleeding hand BACK on the bun to continue cutting!

I spoke up. ‘Did you just cut yourself?’ I asked her in a concerned voice, very aptly hiding my disgust.

She looked around guiltily. She knew that I had seen. ‘Um, yes.’

‘Well, maybe you need to get yourself a band-aid?’ I said in my most caring voice, restraining myself from adding ‘you dumb ass health violation? Do you think this guy wants his sub to be covered in your tard juice? Freak!’

She looked pissed at my suggestion of getting a band-aid for her gushing digit, but she reluctantly turned around and went Somewhere Else, leaving the sub bun there on the sandwich prep board, leaving the poor guy waiting to get his sub.

Slowest Cashier Girl then sneers to her co-worker about how stupid the Bloody Glove woman was. No one made a move to throw away the contaminated sub bun. No one made a move to clean off the sandwich assembly line (which was nary six inches from the sandwich food stuff). No one made a move to help the guy who had the misfortune of getting Edward Scissorhands for a Sandwich Barista.

I did not wait to see it play out’ to see if they would continue to use the same knife or continue to make that guy’s sandwich with the same bun. Instead I fled in terror. Plus, god forgive me, I was very hungry and wanted to eat my pizza, which undoubtedly contained someone’s severed toe or similar Bio-hazard. I don’t care. Them’s good eatins.

Carissa just stopped by my cubicle to see what I was wearing to the concert (for the record, khaki shorts and a white t-shirt’. Classy and yet still indistinct among the hicks). She was worried that maybe I had purchased a new outfit for the concert. Why? It’s not like it’s ActualPerry–I doubt that PseudoPerry deserves a new outfit.

I like whole doughnuts not doughnut holes.

Overheard:

Five-year-old girl: (angry voice) Girls don’t START’ But they FINISH!

These are the songs of my various “love affairs”

Tonight, as karmic justice for ripping the hell out of home parties, I was guilted into attending a Mary Kay party by the lovely Carissa, with whom I will be enjoying MulletRock with on Friday.

Mary Kay Parties: 2

The lady was extremely nice (her name is Kyle and she’d love to do a party for you, she wanted me to tell you, even if you’re a man. She’ll make your skin feel ‘like buttah’ and stuff.) and I liked her. There was no pressure, so of course I spent $30 on stuff. However, with my rosacea, I didn’t have to buy the whole ‘facial care’ bundle. I could purchase just the foundation and moisturizer. Thus, the special handicap treatment has already begun! Woooooo! Now, where’s my special parking sticker?

I also felt really bad when I told Penny that it looked like she’d been making out with Bozo the Clown.

I was driving out to Carissa’s house and the song ‘In Your Eyes’ by Peter Gabriel came on. That’s one of my favorite all time songs. Then I drove to volleyball (where we uncharacteristically got our fine tushes handed to us on a platter) and when I left, the song ‘Throwing It All Away’ by Genesis came on.

Bookended as it were by two of my favorite songs, I began to think of how each song was based on some enormous crush that I had and I think that hearing the songs brings back a little of that excited feeling of being in Crushville. Then I started to think about all the ‘Boy’ songs I have.

Sea of Love by the Honeydrippers– Picture little Weetabix in the 8th grade. Everything that was ADULT was coming into sharp focus for me. And then I got my very first serious boyfriend. Jeremiah’ what a hottie he was. He reminds me now of River Phoenix. We used to stand out on the coldest days, making out against a neighbor’s house or behind the nunnery at the local church. Then we’d get yelled at by the nuns. Jeremiah was Catholic, too, so I’d suppose this offered a little extra excitement for him. He still lives in that neighborhood, too, with his wife and two kids. During that several months when we were an ‘item’, the song ‘Sea of Love’ was playing constantly. Everytime I’d hear it, the phone would ring and it would be Jeremiah. I began to think that maybe it was fate or psychic or something. In actuality, I think the song was in heavy rotation on the radio station I listened to. His was the first erect penis I had ever seen. I wrote about it in my diary then and let my friend Erika read it. We both recited the line from the diary to each other at my party last month. ‘There it was’. Plain as day.’ I remember that it scared me. I wouldn’t look directly at a penis for several years. Thirteen is a little young to look at a penis. They’re not very pretty. Sorry, guys, but they’re not. Anyway, I got the chicken pox (for the second time) during our little ‘relationship’ and could not see him for two weeks. Two weeks is a lonnnnng time when you’re thirteen. Jeremiah got disillusioned and I didn’t have quite the draw that I had before (in other words, he wasn’t wrapped as tightly around my finger as I wanted him to be) and I broke up with him. I think I was seeking a little drama. Jeremiah claimed later that HE broke up with ME. In following years, Jeremiah would send me notes telling me to call him. In my sophomore yearbook, he signed it ‘Love, Jer’ and left his phone number but at that point I had moved on to older men.

Crazy for You by Madonna- When I was a freshman in junior high (we didn’t have those wussy Middle Schools back then! You sucked it up and went to high school as a sophmore.) I was the yearbook photographer. My friend Will was the editor. I had the hots for him something awful. He was clever, smart, rich, and very very adorable. He was the son of a local celebrity and maintained a healthy amount of chagrin for it. I was scheduled to cover the costume dance for the yearbook and Will was there. He saw me at the beginning of the dance and said ‘Hi Dollface!’ and then proceeded to call me that throughout the night. You can imagine how this would make the fat girl feel! Then, for the last dance of the night, we danced together to ‘Crazy for You’. I was so excited. That night, I called my best friend, Fern (the girl who moved to Seattle and is now pregnant) to share with her the earth-shattering news that I had danced with my crush. She wasn’t there– she was babysitting. I told her father instead, because I had to tell someone. I’m certain that Mr. Fern’s Dad shared my enthusiasm. I was so completely head-over-heels for Will. It was my first really deep crush. (Poor Jeremiah! I hope he’s not reading this! No wonder I broke up with him) Postscript: Will is now living in a relationship with a man. They’re very happy. I haven’t met his boyfriend, but I have this strange feeling that I’d have the urge to shout ‘Bitch!’ at him.

Kiss Off by the Violent Femmes ‘ When I was a counselor in training at Camp U-nah-li-ya, I got a big ‘camp crush’ on a junior counselor named Steve C. Steve C. was another blond geeky hottie boy. That year, the camp director Morty declared that if he found a Violent Femmes tape, he would smash it with a sledgehammer. What? Who was this band that could drive the normally docile and friendly Morty to wield a mighty sledgehammer? Steve C. liked the Femmes and one of my other C.I.T. peers had the contraband tape. We all hushed and listened to it constantly whenever our superiors were out of earshot. The surest way to make a 15-year-old do something is to tell them that they can’t do it, everyone knows that. He should have made a moratorium on getting up early, drinking all of your juice and picking up litter. Anyway, somewhere along the line, Steve C. was reciting some rules during a game or something and he got to rule 8 and I said slyly ‘8 8 I forget what 8 was for!’ and he got a big grin and said ‘Weetabix, please, I’m trying to explain this to the campers. This will go down on your permanent record.’ Which is of course another lyric from that song. My campers became very wide-eyed and quiet, afraid of the whole permanent record issue. We then proceeded to have this strange bond and he’d always smile broadly at me when we passed paths at camp. And that was it. No showing of his penis. Not even a kiss. At the end of camp, I gave Steve C. my favorite jelly bracelet and never saw him again. I also like this song because parts of it sound like it’s being sung by Long Duck Dong from ‘Sixteen Candles’.

Throwing it all away by Genesis – This is the song of my sophomore crush. Andy K. was a senior and he actually talked to little old me. We worked on the German club homecoming float committee together. Our idea was a little too high-brow for a high school homecoming parade, I now realize. We were going to have a very small-statured junior wearing Lederhosen and Viking horns (ok, we were a little confused about ethnicities here). He was going to be standing on a paper-mache mountain while strains of ‘The Flight of the Valkyries’ was piped over someone’s boom box. Our task: make a paper-mache mountain. It looked more like a meatloaf. We couldn’t find Lederhosen that would fit our Viking/Hessian boy. I think he wore brown track shorts instead. It was ridiculous. However, the building of it required Andy K. to chauffeur me to and from various committee meetings/float-building sessions. He loved Genesis and the Invisible Touch album had just come out and he’d always have it playing on the car stereo. I would wonder if possibly the lyrics to this song were some sort of clue ‘Need I say I love you, Need I say I care?’ but now I realize that teenage boys aren’t generally that subtle. He always wore a Gilligan white hat and blue Chuck Taylor’s. I actually purchased my own pair of Chuck Taylor’s, just hoping that Andy would notice. How pathetic I was. I’m certain if I had approached him and said ‘Hey Andy, let’s hook up’ he would have been overpowered by my cute looks, my perky personality and my ability to leave my enemies cowering in a pile of verbal slams. But alas, all my aggression was saved for my wit, as I was too afraid to profess my adoration of his geeky charm. He’s a professor now. I always wonder if he still wears the Gilligan hat?

In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel — This was my Chuck song. He was Lloyd Dobbler mixed with the kid from “Real Genius” (not Val Kilmer, the character he played). He was very sheepish and cute. I was a Junior, so I was running out of older men at school… he was only a year older than me.

Two out of Three Ain’t Bad by Meatloaf – When I was a senior, I had run out of older boys at my school so was forced to look elsewhere. I was involved with a twenty-eight year old man. I met him through community theatre and then he cast me in a horror movie he was producing. We used to sit in his apartment and kill brain cells regularly with recreational pharmaceuticals and listen to ‘Bat Out of Hell’. He used to tell me that the song ‘Two out of Three Ain’t Bad’ was a perfect analogy for our relationship, as he wanted me, he needed me but there was no way that he would fall in love with me, as I was much too young for him. And there was ‘only one girl who (he) would ever love and that was so many years ago’. Now that I’m as old as he was then, I now wonder what he was thinking. I mean, giving alcohol and drugs to a minor? Ironically, I broke connection with him when it turned out that he was bi and had a strange fling with Will, who I mentioned above. I cannot begin to describe what strangeness it was to be the girl whose two big crushes each separately confessed how it was to make out with the other one. It was very strange indeed. I’m surprised, actually, that I graduated high school at all.

Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) by Journey — When I began college, I was dating two different guys. Over the summer between my first and second freshman semesters, I met and started to date one guy here at home. Then I met and dated a townie where I went back to school in the fall. His name was Mike and he was twenty-five, blond, played in a band and drove a Mustang. The Home Guy went to school, lived with his parents, was my age (only 10 months older than me… what a scandal!), drove a very boring car, and was into computers. I was not exclusive with either guy and they both knew that I was dating the other one. It was a very hard schedule for me to keep, however, as I ended up staying up late during the week with Mike and then going home and staying up late on the weekend with Home Guy. It was getting to the point that I couldn’t keep up that pace anymore and I needed to make a decision. I was leaning toward going out with Mike, the hot guitar guy. Then I was listening to Journey one day and thinking about the lyrics to this song. ‘If he ever hurts you, true love won’t desert you, you know I still love you though we touched and went our separate ways.’ And I was thinking that the girl in the song was SO STUPID to be going with the other guy when Steve Perry would still be in love with her after she dumped him. Then one night, my car broke down about 30 miles west of my college town. I called Mike to come and pick me up as I was stranded in December in this little town at 9:30 at night and I was calling from a little gas station, which was closing in 10 minutes and I’d have to wait outside after that. He said ‘Ok, but I’m making macaroni & cheese right now and I’m going to wait until the noodles boil and I eat. Then I’ll come and get you.’ While I was waiting for Mike to come and pick me up, I called Home Guy and explained that I likely wouldn’t be able to come home that weekend as my car had died and I was stranded. He offered to come and pick me up, right there and then, and drive me back to school. This was over 120 miles away from him and then he would have had to drive back home. I told him that he didn’t have to come and Mike was coming to pick me up (albeit after he finished his very important macaroni and cheese). Ok, he said, but if you still want to come home this weekend, I can come up and get you. It was then that I realized that Home Guy would be the Steve Perry in my situation and Mike would be ‘the other guy’ and I would be the Stupid Girl if I went with Mike. I didn’t. And I still get a weak little pang when I hear that song and think about how Perry was so devoted to Stupid Girl.

Oh, need I tell you that Home Guy was Esteban? End of Story.

Edited to add: when I left for lunch today, the song on the radio after I turned off the CD player was “In Your Eyes”. The song finished and I turned the station and the next station I turned to was playing “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart”. How kooky is that?

That girl is pretty wild now the girl’s a superfreak

Ok, more reasons why I’m a Freak.

I think I would quiver with excitement if I ever met Uncle Bob in person. He’s a superstah to me. More excited than I would be if I met the lady who played Aunt Bea on ‘The Andy Griffith Show’ or Tim Conway, of ‘Dorf Goes Fishing’ fame. I’d probably offer to be his voluptuous love slave, simply because a suave sense of humor goes a long way with me, but then he’s happily married and has an adorable little baby. But he did a rare double entry this week devoted to the poop in his child’s diaper. I’m certain that he’s somehow doing a shout-out to me. But then, the voices inside my head tend to disagree. They think it’s an elaborate plot to overthrow Nixon. But that’s what they think EVERYTHING is. I think Abby Hoffman died and settled in my brain. Anywhoo, UncleBob is one sexy mutha.

Yesterday, our managers at work took a gaggle of Gemini’s and Cancer’s out for a ‘birthday lunch’. To whom did all of the employees turn to pick the lunch locale? How did they all know that I am a foodie? Could it be from my luscious hips sculpted by years of mashed potatoes and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups? Could be. I picked a lovely bistro. Green Bay now has not one, but TWO bistros. Who says that we have less culture than a tub of Dannon yogurt? I have a dream that someday the bistros will outnumber the sports bars and the ‘Dew Drop Inn’ bars. Ok, I know, not very likely, but it’s my dream. Anywhoo, the reason I’m bringing this up in the ‘More Reasons I’m a freak’ entry is: I ordered a black angus Au Poivre burger. Why did I order that? Because I could pronounce ‘Poivre’ and I wanted to be able to say in a very snotty tone ‘I’ll have the Au Poivre burger with the corn fries, bien&AO8AvwC9AO8AvwC9-. Plus, there were onions in the quiche of the day and they could not be removed’. Not that I didn’t ask.

I’m high-maintenance. Like a fine Jaguar. Or possibly a corn combine’ the type that people get their arms stuck in.

I don’t like it when food touches on the plate. For instance, those baskets that they bring you at the aforementioned sports bars’. You know, a basket of fries with a burger on top and a pickle haphazardly thrown on the fries. The burger touching the fries doesn’t bother me so much’ the bun forms a protective dry layer between the wet burger and the fries, which must remain dry until the instant that I dip them in ketchup. The pickle on the fries horrifies me. Those vinegary briney fries must be pushed aside. Please do not remind me that I’ve voluntarily put vinegar on my fries in England. That is not the point. I also must eat half the fries without ketchup because only then will I have enough room to put a ketchup blob to dip my fries in. Fries must not prematurely dipped. It’s just not right.

I just want the world to go to those little divided tin trays, like in the army or at camp. That would make me very happy indeed.

Although soup eating would pose a problem.

Adrian!!!!! Adrian!!!! (Rocky 1-4)

Ok, three weird things last night:

I went to dinner with my sister Amy, my mom and my little brother. Their choice of restaurants’ they picked the local pizza parlor which has a Monday night buffet which attracts many residents from the local dirt stock car races.

Weird thing the First: on the pizza buffet, they had a pizza called the BLT pizza. It was covered in mayonnaise. And it was hot. In case you didn’t catch that: hot mayonnaise. Folks, salmonella is God’s way of saying ‘Mayonnaise should never be warmer than 45 degrees Fahrenheit.’ Because God isn’t on the metric system yet. It’s just like how tornados are God’s way of saying ‘Thou shalt not live in trailer parks.’

Weird thing the Second: I asked my little niece Abigail who my mother was, and she said ‘Uncle Esteban’.

Weird thing the Third: I was trying to get to the pizza buffet and there was a table running parallel to the salad bar. Seated at this table was a man in a very large wheelchair. There was a guy standing at the salad bar, dishing up copious amounts of pickles onto his plate. I figured I’d try to squeeze between him and the wheelchair, assuming that the salad bar guy would squish in to accommodate. He didn’t. I ended up getting one of the wheelchair handles up my butt.

Ok, that last one was not so much weird as it was dorky.

My brother has decided to call the remaining puppy Rocky.

This is very confusing to my niece Abigail, whose betta fish died. And his name is Rocky. He has gone, according to the two-year-old, to live with ‘Jegus’. She’s not entirely certain who ‘Jegus’ is, but she knows that he’s a nice man and you go to live with him only if you get very very very sick.

Thus, I’ve suggested that they name the puppy Rocky II: The Sequel. Jonathon isn’t buying it. Abigail then opined that Rocky was red. And he liked to poop.

I swear, she’s just a little Weetabix in training.

Guilt is spelled J-E-L-L-O!

Ok, I just deleted an entry that I had written a few hours ago, about my guilt and dead puppies and how I’m going to hell. It wasn’t a great entry and, honestly, it was totally depressing and it was unfair of me to post that for other people to read, as it would only serve to make other people depressed. I’m not going to make up stuff about “staying honest with myself and you” or whatever. What can I say? I’m a Lutheran from Wisconsin and we’re really good with making distractions with bowls of red Jell-o with whipped cream and bananas.

So, anyway, then I realized it would still look like I updated and you might come and read yesterday’s entry and then be like “What the heck?” and no longer trust the Diaryland’s buddy list or, even worse, be ticked at Andrew or something. So I thought that I should add something here.

So I don’t go to hell. You know? I’m trying to balance the karma.

Anyway, since you’re here anyway, please go and tell Mar-In-Pink to have a Wonderful Birthday because it’s her birthday tomorrow. And that’s a wonderful thing. And also, she’s a sweetheart and has promised me that I’m not, in fact, going straight to hell.

Also, I have not received even ONE email from someone who knows someone who knows the members of the Dave Matthews Band. I need action on this! Please let me know ASAP! We’ve got a wish to fulfil here! If we’re going to save my very cute hinder from burning in the ever-steamy depths of the fiery pits of Hell or being subject to the paws and hooves of Satan’s minions touching my cute bootay, then I’m going to need some teamwork?

Anywho, hope that you’re all having a fabulous Monday night. Don’t forget that there’s a repeat of Angel on tonight.

Just a public service announcement. Trying to adjust that karma again.

Sometimes I really wish I hadn’t been raised by hippies. If I had grown up a normal Lutheran, I would just suppress this all very nicely.

Care for some tasty Jell-O?

Get your filthy Fonda paws off my man…er, men!

You know that lawn that Esteban has neglected to mow? Well, we haven’t had rain in several weeks and now all the nice and neatly cut lawns are brown and crispy! Ours? Green and waving in the sweltering heat. Laziness comes out ahead!!!! Apparently, the longer grass allows it to retain more moisture so it doesn’t cook like George Hamilton in a three-piece tinfoil suit.

Just a little extra knowledge from your friend Weetabix.

Oh, and apparently, my Hamburglery at the ‘rentals house has worked. When we were over there on Father’s Day, I mentioned that I thought that they should get a pool. Immediately, they knocked that right down with various excuses. “You can only swim in Wisconsin three months of the year.” “You have to clean it every day or you burn your eyes out.” “If we had grandchildren to play with, then we would but instead we’ll just sit here and stew in our own sweat to make you suffer for not reproducing. Feel happy?”

Anyway, when we stopped over there this morning, June informed me that she and Ward had been pool shopping because the more they thought about my words, the more they wanted a pool.

BWAHAHAHAHHA!

Do not try to resist my powers of persuasion! I cannot be stopped.

Oh, and I also convinced Esteban to return the rented DVD’s today.

I fucking rock.

I think I’m going to head over to the tree store and try to convince them that they really want to come over to my house, dig a hole and plant the tree that I want to buy. And for this, I will give them tasty lemonade.

I think it will fly.

I think Bridget Fonda has been reading this thing.

First she does a movie where her love interest was Russell Crowe. Then, she was the big love interest in “Monkeybone”, which stars the very hot Brendan Fraser.

Two of the three men who remain on my fucking List. She’s chewed on Russell’s lips and now Brendan’s lips. Hey, those should be MY lips to chew on. Wait, that didn’t sound right. I don’t want Bridget Fonda to chew on my lips, I want her to take her filthy Fonda lips off those of my Listees.

If she goes after Sting next, I’m taking that bitch out. I’m serious. We’re going to have a little chat out back. Just her, me and the fists of death. I’ll snap her scrawny little ass like the fucking plank of over-bleached kelp-eating cartilage that it is. Jennifer Jason Lee has NOTHING on a pissed-off Weetabix.

Nothing.

Spectators will be welcome, of course. I like to work for a crowd. And then at one point, I might step on her neck and yell “Am I not merciful???” as an homage to Russell. And then maybe I’ll do the “George of the Jungle” yell, or perhaps I’ll just be attired in a cute little loincloth, as a shout-out to Brendan.

God, that pisses me off.

I know. You don’t have to remind me that I’m taking this List thing way too far. I’m just being protective. Plus, I don’t think Bridget Fonda’s all that cute. She’s only in acting because of her family. Anyone who starred in “Lake Placid” should not think too highly of themselves.

Ok, well, Bill Pullman can, but he’s cute and he was sexy as the President in “Independence Day”, especially when he quoted the “St. Crispin’s Day” speech before they blew up the aliens.

I hope I didn’t spoil “Independence Day” for anyone there. But then, you knew that they were going to kill the aliens, right? You didn’t really think that the writers would try to convince us that everyone got blown to bits, including the President’s daughter, Will Smith and the dog too?

Come on. Seriously. They don’t kill Will Smith. They might kill Harry Connick Jr. but never the snappy black Astronaut wannabe with the stripper girlfriend who has a heart of gold?

Well, off to water my crispy potted plants in the Sahara Desert, I mean, front yard. Have a super Sunday.

I think I’ll make a snappy new day

I checked the television listings to check to see what time the Russell Crowe Celebrity Profile was airing on E! and found that one of the networks (I haven’t the foggiest which one, it’s channel 3 in our area, which used to be CBS, but now I suspect is ABC or possibly even the Home Shopping network, I’m not terribly certain anymore) is airing a television program called “Best Commercials You’ve Never Seen (And some you have)”.

Now, right from the start, it’s a bit wrong that the commercials are now their own program, but I’m OK with this, simply because ad copy is a wonderful art and highly unappreciated (with the exception of that “I’m Coming Out” Levi’s commercial with the singing bellybuttons in it. The ad whiz who thought up that one belongs in Dante’s seventh layer of hell, to be flogged by the “Where’s the Beef” woman and an insincere Dave Thomas, Founder of Wendy’s). Take for example, another Levi’s commercial for Levi’s cords, showing a man walking through a forest wearing corduroys, making “Zoot Zoot” sounds as he walked and being chased by a horny badger. There wasn’t even a script to that one. A horny badger is funny in any language.

However, my essential problem with this show is that it’s a repeat. Thus, the title isn’t really accurate. It should be called something like “Best Commercials We Could Come Up With” or maybe if they wanted to be more honest about it: “Summer Rerun of the Commercials We Showed During February Sweeps Week, but They’re Still Funny”

I was thinking about immortality last night and I ran into a show talking about Fred Rogers. And I then decided that if I had the chance to grant immortality to any person on the earth, it would be Mr. Rogers. Simply because Mr. Rogers should never die. Not ever. I will bawl big horrible tears and my face will be screwed up for days if Mr. Rogers should ever pass away.

The man’s voice is phenomenal. It’s better than Prozac and years of therapy. Think about it.

Can you think of a single happier place to be than Mr. Roger’s fun little cottage, with it’s little fish tank and shelf full of the miniatures from the Land of Make Believe? I mean, Mr. Rogers was really the voice of King Friday! And Trolley! Wasn’t Trolley the coolest damn thing you ever saw in your life?

I was always pissed off that I had miss Mr. Rogers when I had to go to grade school in the dark ages, before VCRs. There was no edge, like the Electric Company had. There was no simpering, like Sesame Street. Just you and Mr. Rogers and Lady Elaine Fairchild and Prince Tuesday and the like.

Mr. Rogers is retiring from making the Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood show. He’s planning to do some educational recordings and computer programs for children now. But it makes me so happy to know that SOMEONE when I was growing up recognized that he knew I was special and I had him as a friend. And that makes my world a better place indeed.

Eddie Murphy should apologize to him for making fun of him on Saturday Night Live so many years back. But then, I know Mr. Rogers wouldn’t require him to do that. Mr. Rogers would forgive him. That’s why I love Mr. Rogers so much. He’s so much better than most of us.

Thus, Mr. Rogers should be granted immortality.

But I do think that possibly Lady Elaine had a drinking problem. And she might also have been a relative of Jane Hathaway from the Beverly Hillbillies. Not certain. But I should probably go to hell for thinking that.

I think I’ll make a snappy new day

I am currently in the throws of writer’s block.

Which is ironic, because prior to this diary, I hadn’t written anything especially weighty in, oh, three or four years.

Sometimes I think I should be working in a delicious 300-year-old English cottage somewhere, with lichens growing on the slate roof. Even though most English cottages have those thatch roofs, though I’m certain that they would tend to get musty or possibly moldy and that makes my throat itchy. I yearn to be a independently wealthy writer, capable of taking weeks off as the muse dictates. I think it would have been easier if I had been a writer in, for instance, Jane Austen’s time’. Or maybe Mary Shelley. They had things like absinthe and opium and they were LEGAL. I think. Maybe not. But then I think about niceties like penicillin and my asthma inhaler and the little cake of chemicals that I drop into the toilet tank so that I don’t have to scrub out the tank. So maybe I’ll just live in the now and wear a lot of empire waist dresses.

This writer’s block is not so much block as angst, even though I detest that term. Everyone is so angsty, there should be a store at the mall devoted to it, like the Gap, filled with many drab outfits and smelling of eucalyptus. Douglas Coupland has decided that he regrets ever coining the phrase ‘Generation X’. One of the little 19-year-olds that I trained actually told me that they were ‘Generation X’. I am 30 years old and I barely old enough to qualify for that generation. Stop calling it Generation X and start calling them the Depressed, because that’s really what they are.

Last night, finally got to spend some quality time with Esteban’. For two hours, that is. He was the perfect husband last night. My first words once I got home at 7:15 pm were ‘I want to watch ‘Big Brother’!’ which he nicely already had on the telly for me. Then he ordered a pizza for us from our favorite joint, which was to arrive at 8:20. Then we both watched ‘Big Brother’ together. It was so wonderful.

At one point, Esteban looked at a box of truffles sitting next to the recliner and said, ‘What’s this?’

Now, for the record, it’s a box of truffles that I had forgotten that I purchased a month back. I rediscovered it on Sunday and tore open the wrapping to eat three truffles for dinner while watching the Buffy rerun. And figured that Esteban, with his steely hunter’s gaze, would spy it immediately, sitting out as it was, in plain sight. The man can find a pack of Oreos behind the canister of flour on the bottom shelf of our messy pantry, for crying out loud! So naturally, as I continued to snack on them throughout the week, I figured that Esteban was also munching on them. But I should have realized that this was not the case, as Esteban does not snack like a girl, feeling guilty, munching and nibbling, pretending that he’s not really eating. No. Esteban eats like a guy. ‘This is good, I’m still hungry, I’m eating some more.’ Until every delicious truffle is gone.

‘What?’ I said, ‘You mean you haven’t been eating the truffles that I left out? You mean that the box is mostly gone because every one of those truffles went down my gullet?’ I recoiled in horror.

Esteban looked at me, eyes wide and began talking in a very soft voice, much the way you would talk a jumper down from the ledge of a tall building. ‘Noooooooooo. I’ve known about it alllllll the timmmmme, honey. I’ve actually eaten most of this entire box. Almost all of it, actually.’

So I calmed down. Later, after we finished the pizza, I noticed Esteban was playing with the cat with one of the little inner trays from the box.

‘Did you finish that box?’ I asked.

‘No!’ Esteban sneered.

&AO8AvwC9AO8AvwC9-No’, because that would be very piggy of someone to sit there and watch television and stick truffles down their gullet? ‘No’ because only an orally-fixated freak would eat so many truffles in one sitting?’

‘Nooooooo, hon,’ His eyes were large and focused on me again, like talking with a woman wielding a loaded pistol. ‘Noooo’ actually I lied’ I ate every last one of the remaining truffles. They were delicious and now they are gone and I don’t feel an ounce of remorse because it was completely natural.’

‘I love you, Esteban.’

‘I love you too.’ And then under his breath &AO8AvwC9AO8AvwC9AO8AvwC9-freak.’

He wins the Perfect Husband award. But only on this diary, which he doesn’t read, because I don’t want him get a swelled head. And he still doesn’t wash the dishes nearly enough.

This morning started out fairly badly. My hair was disapproving of my lifestyle. My hair wants to live on the head of a television news anchor, who will spend an hour lavishing attention and professional haircare products upon it. After blow-drying my mop this morning, I realized that I had just precisely replicated the hairstyle of the studly Keith Partridge.

Then I was forced to trot down to the basement naked as Allyson Hannigan, as both the bra and panties, which were required by my chosen outfit of the day, were still in the wash. I’m certain that I frightened several spiders, but I’m looking at it as a natural alternative to insecticide.

When I opened the door to the dryer, out popped a $20 bill. Now, I realize that most strippers do not receive a $20 tip, especially not from their major appliances. This made me feel more like the curvy round sex goddess that I am, so I gave the dryer a lapdance while the washing machine watched and hooted. The Maytag man is not so lonely anymore.

I got to work and I was promptly informed that my shirt was on inside out. I jumped into the conference room and quickly removed my top. The copy machine started yelling ‘Take it off, babeeee!’ but I only perform in the comfort of my own home and only for cash, thank you.

My college roommate Kassandra just emailed me to let me know that she would be visiting home this summer! Sweet! I’m so very excited! Kass and I were always an odd couple but we got along extremely well. She’s one of those rare combinations: stunningly attractive (a mix of Madonna during her ‘Blond Ambition’ phase and Marilyn Monroe) and also very intelligent and opinionated. She now lives in New Mexico, running her own ad agency. I write copy for her now and then, but I haven’t actually seen her since 1991. It’s going to be so GREAT!!! We’re going to go to an old-fashioned place and drink Martinis and smoke cigars. I think we’re going to look like movie stars from the 1940’s. She’s going to be Marlene Dietrich and I think I’ll be Mae West, only brunette and more round and voluptuous. Ok, I know she was pretty voluptuous, but I’ll be more so.

My favorite Mae West quote: “I used to be pure as snow…. but then I drifted.”

I went out to lunch yesterday with my friend Markus. It was a little disturbing, because he reads this here diary and I’d start to talk about something and he’d already know. ‘My mom’s dog had puppies.’ ‘Yeah, with the husky?’ Then the whole time I couldn’t think of anything to say that I hadn’t already talked about here. So we gossiped instead. And ate too much. I made the mistake of getting soup and lasagne thus was walking around work afterward bemoaning my stuffed tummy. I just wanted to put on my cute jammies and curl up on my sofa, but there were things to do, stupid questions to answer, and a paycheck to receive.

Then I got accosted by one of the theatre people in town. She and I went to high school together and I see her out every now and then when I do the sing thing. She’s always sort of trying to prove stuff to me because I was a big theatre person and president of the drama club, etc, in high school and she was an underclassmen. I always feel like saying, ‘Chill, babe, that was like 12 years ago.’ I get the feeling that when people talk and talk about high school, it shows that that’s where they peaked. She raved to me about how she got cast in a dinner theater in town, at a bar. I asked her how she got cast, because I hadn’t heard of try-outs for it, and she was flustered, ‘Oh, well, my husband works for the bar and I’ve known the owner forever.’ So, this nepotism (of sorts) is something to be proud of?

Freud says that repetitive dreams are really impulses or conflicts that your subconscious is trying to work out. Repetitive conversations must be the same thing. I often have a reoccurring dream about someone trying to break into my house. The last one I had, my dream self had been so used to this dream, she was no longer afraid for her personal safety, she just didn’t want anyone to see our dirty house. So when my dream self runs around to lock all the windows, Dream Weetabix locked windows and also tidied up.

A sure sign of stress: multi-tasking in your dreams.

I miss Esteban. Yesterday, I didn’t see him all day. Every so often, we relegate back to a weird schedule, where I basically fall asleep alone and wake up with him in the bed, leaving for work while he is still asleep. And we both essentially work the same shift. I can’t imagine how couples who work opposite shifts handle it. It’s like having a messy roommate that you can’t even kick out.

This working ten hour days is starting to get to me. I end up staying up very late because it doesn’t feel like I should be going to bed three hours after getting home. Thus I’m very very tired.

Tilly has become a strange alarm clock of sorts. If I turn off my alarm and then pop back into bed, she’s next to me within ten minutes, patting me with her little paw. And if I ignore her, she makes this pathetic little “Mew” and continues to pat me in a different place on my body until I respond.

Snooze Alarm Kitty!

Did you know that the dog on the Cracker Jack box’s name is Bingo?

I didn’t either.

Mwah!
