The Baby Story

Where She Went

She lived with her husband in a little bungalow that had a front door with two windows on either side, covered in awnings. When she’d come home at night in the semi-gloom of dusk, the house looked as though it had sleepy eyes and a yawning mouth through which she walked. Her favorite time was when she came home to an empty dark house. She would sit alone in the front room without turning on the lights and she would listen to the wind howl and the glass in the window panes rattle and she would stare out through sleepy eyes at the bare branches of the trees lining the street. It was during one of these times that she was alone that she realized that she had been with her husband half of her life. Certainly all of her adult life and over half of the part of the life that mattered, the years between age 12 and now. They had a quiet little life, filled with the things that occupy their time. She had a leg of lamb in the freezer that she was saving for some kind of divine inspiration or some recipe that did not involve rosemary, which to her tasted like pine needles. And they were happy. They often proclaimed this to no one in particular, congratulating themselves on having achieved exactly what everyone dreams. Her husband loved her and she loved her husband. He also had an insatiable lust for her. It felt strange and unreal that he would want her as much as he claimed he did. Sometimes he would grab onto her and cling as though to a life raft, his hands roaming for purchase. Sometimes they would lay on their oversized sofa together, his hands would wandering over her curves as he talked about ordinary things, such as what they should make for dinner or their plans for the weekend. It was as though he were not aware his hands were doing such things. She felt guilty in that he enjoyed her body so very much while his to her was utilitarian. Motile. Warm and covered in downy fur. A body made for taking out the garbage and wearing denim. It seemed a father’s body, in some ways, although he was not a father and she was not a mother. Her own hands never roamed independently of her brain, but rather dreamt of things to make and draw and weave. They never sought him out. This was not to say that she did not enjoy him or his body. She did, but she knew that he was always there and she did not need to touch him for reassurance. Whenever she got up to use the bathroom, he would immediately ask where she was going. She found this extremely annoying although she couldn’t say why. Even in the middle of the night, when she’d rise from bed, he would ask her this. Finally, one day after many years of such questions, she asked him why he asked her that all the time when the answer was always the same. He told her that he was afraid that she would leave. She sat silent for a bit, not needing to ask, ‘where would I go’ for they already both knew the answer. She did not mind being alone. There was not a question of talking about what they would do or not do. There was not the subtle play for more and more touching. Sometimes she thought back to what she expected her life would have been had she not married this normal, quite content man. But mostly though, she thought about her barely acknowledged belief that nothing could possibly go well for this long and the inevitable feeling that there was another shoe about to drop. She wondered when he would stop touching her, when he would stop asking where she was going when she went to the bathroom. Until one day, she had a dream, a normal dream, that she had a child. A little baby girl, with long eyelashes and big brown eyes even though her own eyes were blue. It was a strange dream because she normally dreamt complex epic dramas, comedies and fantasies with casts of thousands and subplots that wove into other subplots. But this was simple. In this dream, she was bathing the child, only a few days old because she still had that blue umbilical cord piece on her stomach. Simple cupping of the warm water and bringing it over the baby’s skin, taking care to keep her head out of the water. The plastic bathtub was light blue; the fluffy towel that she planned to wrap the baby in was pink and smelled of Dreft. She remembered feeling awkward in holding her daughter and worried that it was too cold or that she would get sick. She knew in the dream that she never wanted to be separated from the baby and knew absolute peace in holding her while she slept. And then she awoke and remembered that she was not a mother and there was no baby. She was confused and snapped at her husband that evening, apologizing later and confessing that she did not understand what had come over her that evening. Her husband sensed that something was troubling her, so he suggested that they plan a trip up the coast to the vineyards. Yes, walking through old buildings made of stone permeated with the sour fermented smell of wine was one of the things that made her happy. She nodded and offered a weak smile to him. It was a lovely idea. They could come home with many cases of wine for holiday entertaining. Yes, it was just the thing. He patted her on the shoulder and asked if they were out of coffee. In her dream that night, she took the baby grocery shopping. While she was searching the shelves for Desitin, an old friend of hers from college was in the same aisle, searching for deodorant. The woman excitedly cooed over the sleeping bundle. In her own cart, a loaf of bread, diapers, formula, cans of soup, cheese, and hamburger. In her friend’s cart, pomegranates, tapenade, brioche, shrimp, and a bottle of merlot. The year on the bottle was 1997. During the day, she found it difficult to concentrate. Sometimes she would feel a sense of panic, wondering who was watching the baby. But then she would remember that there was no baby and it was all a dream. She tried to fill her waking hours with little projects and browsed through her collection of often-ignored catalogs that showed lovely rooms conceptualized by designers. She and her husband went to the bookstore and walked away with large bags full of words and congratulated themselves at being so lucky that they could afford such troves. The following night, she went to the ob/gyn to have stitches removed from giving birth. Her doctor was happy and smiling and asked how the baby was, asked if she was able to get enough sleep. Another night, she sat on the sofa, not the large sofa that sat in her home but a different one, and rested the baby on her legs and they simply looked at each other. The baby would grip her finger and she would softly stroke the loose skin of the baby’s tiny hand. It was the same baby every night. Her subconscious had provided a name although upon waking she could never quite recall it. It was an old name, beginning with a vowel. It was a name you would have seen on crumbling gravestones in churchyards and in the mornings, she would know it upon waking and think herself stupid for having forgotten it, but then after ten minutes, it would be gone, sitting lightly on the tip of her tongue like a sigh. She was left only with the clear feeling that her arms were too empty, her days too long. She was very puzzled about the baby’s father, but then one night she found that it was morning. She walked into the baby’s room, gathered her up into her arms and brought her back into her own bedroom, which was not the bedroom she shared with her husband in the sleepy-eyed bungalow but rather an entirely different bedroom. One with high ceilings and Victorian moldings and a cheery white wainscoting that had a shelf at eye level which contained little treasures, tea cups and colored bottles and tiny rocks she knew instinctively had been collected at special moments and on special trips. She placed the baby on the bed between herself and the sleeping form of a dark-haired lanky male form. This was not her husband, could not be her husband, was much too narrow and thin. She did not look up from the baby but she felt him turn over and speak softly to them both and she could hear a smile in his voice. And she felt the warm sun shine down on the three of them, warming them in a bright morning light, and wanted to weep for the knowledge that it would soon wake her up and they would be gone, leaving only her utilitarian husband in their place. The next afternoon, she broached the subject of children with her husband. He responded that he was too selfish with his time and her attention and very simply did not want to complicate his life with progeny. She was surprised by his candor and at the same time, completely unsurprised. They had discussed this early on, but somewhere, in her certainty that nothing good could come from her choices, she had dismissed the incongruity, thinking that they would have broken up by the time it mattered. She crinkled her brow then consciously pushed the thoughts away and decided instead to think about what she would make for dinner. Perhaps she would attempt the lamb. With roasted autumn vegetables tossed with some imported olive oil. She decided that she would stop dreaming of the baby and the baby’s father. That night, she found herself in bed with the father. Her hands were roaming over his tall frame, his long arms wrapped around her, his whispered assurances that he would be gentle and that she should tell him immediately if anything hurt. But she did not want him to stop, wanted instead to weave herself around him and get lost inside the safe place he made. Afterwards, she wanted to tell him that she was going away, that she would not see him or the baby again, but instead she rested her head against his smooth chest and listened to his heartbeat and the soft sounds of their baby girl through the baby monitor. Before bedtime the next evening, she grimaced as she swallowed a plastic cup full of Nyquil. That night, she had strange terrifying dreams of penguins with teeth and women with white powdered faces, but the baby and the man were not in them. Several months passed, until she had almost forgotten why she began to take the sleeping aids. When she used the last of the ropey liquid, she did not open another bottle. That night, her dream was terrifying. She and the man were waiting to be admitted into the infant ward of the ICU. Her baby was lying there in a little plastic bed, just staring up at nothing. Her once vivid eyes had gone dull and her skin was grey. They both donned gowns and masks and powdered latex gloves that smelled of talc. She wanted to hold her baby but the wires and monitors prevented her from doing so. There was a single pink teddy bear in the baby’s stark little crib. She could only put one latex gloved hand onto her baby’s little chest and feel how cold she felt, despite the heat lamps that tried to keep her warm. The noises coming from the baby sounded like those of an old person, with raspy air and congested wheezes. Looking at what had happened to her baby while she was gone made her need to cry, but she couldn’t. She was paralyzed. She knew that if something happened to the baby, she would not be able to go on, she would not be able to anything. She would simply fall into a heap on the floor and never move until she died. The baby’s father was idiotically chatting with the nurses about visiting hours and she wanted to hit him because somehow this might have been his fault, although she didn’t know how that could be. She wondered if it was really her fault, but could not bear to even consider it. She heard the doctor telling the baby’s father that the next twelve hours would be critical. She traced around the baby’s belly button where just six months before there had been the blue stump of a cord, the place where the doctor had snipped them apart. She looked to the baby’s face, waiting for a giggle, as she knew inherently that the baby was ticklish on her tummy, but the baby could not giggle, could only look up into her mother’s eyes and try to understand why she wasn’t making it any better. She simply hovered over the crib until she noticed drops of water on the pink hospital blanket and realized that they were coming from her, tears dripping off her face. And she wanted to make a deal with someone, anyone, that if they would just make the baby better that she would never wake up and continue to live here with her baby whose name she couldn’t remember and the baby’s father, whose name she never learned. Or if that weren’t a good enough deal, then she would offer that she would just never wake up. She would be neither in her world nor this one. Just make the baby better. Just let the baby be ok. Just let the baby live. She opened her eyes, blinked twice, and stared up at the ceiling of her bedroom of the sleepy-eyed bungalow. Under the blankets, her husband’s hands snaked toward her to draw her closer to him. It was a new day.

Don’t cry for me, I’m already dead

With Esteban gone, the house stays in this weird sort of stasis. Everything is still where I left it. There are no new little evidences of mini hurricanes in the living room, no detritus left on the counter, no still life titled Cheese Wrappers with Dirty Spoon sitting on the stove. It’s times like this that I could easily see the allure of a monastic life. But then the cat hunts me through the halls and demands that I attend to her. She has rediscovered the old fur coat sitting on the love seat in the bedroom, therefore the business of winter has officially begun.

I managed to limp through the grocery store last night, although without a list or a plan or anything. They built another location of my upscale grocery store about two miles further into the suburbs and now I worry about the one that’s seven blocks from my house. Especially since when I drove up at 5:30 pm on a Monday night, I was able to park two spots from the door. The parking lot was barren. This is very unusual. I hobbled around the store, clueless, only knowing that I needed bread and fruit and milk. I should shop clueless more often because I only spent $50. I balked on getting some more bottled water because it meant having to walk to the opposite end of the store. By the time I got home, my knee was throbbing, so I collapsed onto the sofa, upside down, and shivered against the bag of ice quelling the storm in my beleaguered left leg. If I have a very full bag of ice and leave it on too long, my foot falls asleep, but I didn’t care, only sat there staring into some episodes of Joe Schmo that The Unit deigned to record earlier this weekend. It still won’t record ‘Starting Over’ which is my personal crack television (Dude, Nyanza needs to be smacked across the face, and now I love Andy more than words can say, even though I suspect she’s a bit of a train wreck.) and I missed a whole week of the show. In fact, there was one day when I saw it record and then it was there and then it was gone. I think it’s toying with me. I’ve been forced to set up a Season Pass on the Tivo and I’m now certain that Ricky Fitts thinks less of me. Or will start recommending Touched By An Angel or maybe Passions. Look at me, raving about missing my stories.

With Esteban gone, I realized that I tend to instinctively revert to vegetarianism. And also breakfast. Apparently, if I lived alone, I’d live mostly on cereal, toast, and peanut butter and banana sandwiches. I put my Chococat coffee mug in the freezer last night so that I could eschew Sbux and drink ice cold milk with my morning pb&b sandwich and decided that impossibly cold skim milk is one of those things that makes me ridiculously happy.

I have my writing workshop tonight and am plagued by complete and utter apathy. We have a story due tonight. I’m too lazy to finish my car salesman story, even though I’m excited by the premise and love the imagery and have the last three paragraphs written in my head. I think the problem is that I’ve just written a ton of establishing plot line and bored my own self with it. It’s muddy and the narrator has a boring voice and I can’t find the cadence of his speech pattern. And I haven’t even gotten to the good part yet, but I’m certain that my reader will be in a coma before they ever get to the actual plot. Writing is hard. I’m extremely tempted to cheat again and hand in something I’ve already written. Maybe the Baby Story that I posted once here and then deleted (after five comments appeared on the comments section) but and sent out instead to the notify. Because it would be as easy and safe as sinking into a warm down comforter. But then I’d have to think of a name for the thing, other than ‘The Baby Story’. Writing is hard, thinking up titles is damned impossible.

It occurs to me that I’ve just written more here than I have in a week in my car salesman story. And with that, have a great day, I have to set my sights elsewhere.

The truth is out there

The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.

The reports of how secretly evil I am? Are not.

Esteban has gone to Orlando for another technical event thingy. Something about computers and storage and that’s when it all turned into blah blah blah inside my brain. I should pay attention more, because when people ask me where he’s gone, I can only either give them a blank look or tell them he’s gone to pimp college. Which is absolutely ridiculous because no self-righteous pimp would ever be caught dead in baggy Levi’s, white New Balances, and an 3V1L L33T t-shirt.

He’s been a saint putting up with my whining about the upside down thing, though, going out for ice and Reese’s Peanut Butter cups and replacement NetFlix movies. He even set up the Xbox on one side of the bed and propped it up so that I can lie there and pretend to kick the asses of the undead with my agile fingers. (I’m at work today and suddenly getting nostalgic for my sick bed. That’s saying something right there.) He also kept reminding me that it could be worse, that I could feel like death (I didn’t’ just had a minor head rush from being inverted), and that I should be thankful.

‘You could have broken your hoo-ha. Think of it that way. A broken hoo-ha.’

Because instead of female genitalia, I apparently have the soundtrack for a Warner Brother’s cartoon.

And speaking of things that give me vague unease: You know how in the morning, when you do the thing you do which usually involves reading materials and some alone time? Yeah, well, this morning, as I went to send my little package out into the world, I looked down and noticed that one member of the Puupuu tribe looked exactly like a sea horse. Exactly. And then, instead of wondering just what was in that order of Moo Shu vegetables last night, I had a weird moment of clairvoyance and knew that somewhere, somehow, there is a person out there taking pictures of their poo. Probably like some weird compulsion. And, in the age of digital cameras, they are probably cataloging them on the internet. And that if I mentioned this, someone would post the URL on the comments section. And suddenly, with that realization, it was a moment of wisdom about the world that I didn’t have two seconds before. And with that flush and that sea horse (I kid you not! A sea horse!) went another tiny bit of my innocence.

There it is then. Also, I think I’m going to cut way back on the codeine, much to the relief of everyone who just read the above paragraph.

Ok, so what makes more news about Journalcon’ people gushing about Journalcon, people bitching about Journalcon, or people bitching about people writing about Journalcon. I’m certain that the non-attender might feel a bit skeptical about how everyone loved each other and how everyone was beautiful and how everyone is witty and ours heads practically explode from the scintillating conversations.

Well, baby, I’m about to blow the top off the whole Journalcon Cabal right now. I have a secret mp3 recorder (which is oh-so-cute and also blue) and managed to smuggle out an actual Journalcon conversation. All of those raving post-Journalcon entries? It’s the best propaganda ever written! Anna Beth is not really as cute as everyone says!* Pineapple Girl’s diary is actually written by a room full of monkeys with typewriters in Iceland! Rob is actually a highly evolved computer program! Here’s the top secret transcript’ which is here until the Online Diary Cabal sends their crack team of top secret operatives to kidnap me and replace me with a clone. But at least you’ll all know what really happened and I can die a happy woman. With a fully functional hoo-ha.

Scene: Sitting in the Chamber bar, sipping ginger ale in martini glasses

Sundry: Wow, this is cool.

M.Giant: Yeah

Omar: Yeah

Tim: Yeah.

Chiara: Um’ yeah.

Tyger: So Uh’ we should, um, go wave at the Webcam now, huh?

ShannonK: Sounds good!

Columbine:Yeah!

Kymm: Great idea!

Montykins: Um’ ok!

Anna Beth: Everyone act as though someone just said the funniest thing, you know? Har har!

(Everyone waves madly at the webcam, laughing hysterically, holding up martini glasses and pounding them for the camera.)

Pat: Phew!

Mad Red Head: Yeah!!

Lisa-Marie: Yeah!

Anna: That was fun.

AngelineYeah.

Mopie: Yeah! The web cam was a good idea.

Kim: Yeah.

Elizabeth: What’s the name of this panel again?

Mary: LMAO and LOL: How to Be Hella Fun-nay or something.

LisaNH: So’ web cams are good.

Stephanie:Yeah’ web cams! Excellent idea.

Allison: And also’ um’ hmmmm.

(Awkward silence)

Kramer: Did you say something

Invincible Girl: No, I didn’t say anything.

Kramer: I thought you said something.

Invincible Girl: No. Not really.

Kramer: You were about to say something?

Invincible Girl: No, I just had an itch.

Kramer: Oh.

Invincible Girl: Yeah.

Kramer: Hmmm.

(More awkward silence)

Chauffi: Remember that time when Sundry said this was cool? That was hilarious.

Jen: Hilarious?

Chauffi: Well, it was the way she said it. I guess you’d have to be there.

Jen: I thought I was here.

Chauffi: Well, um’ I mean, like right here in this chair where I heard it. The inflection.

Jen: Oh, I see. Yeah, I can see that, I guess. Ha ha!

Beth: Ha ha! Hilarious.

Biensoul: This is so cool.

LadeeLeroy Yeah

Omar: Yeah

Cruel Irony: Yeah.

And now you know the truth. So everyone who thinks that Journalcon might just really suck, doesn’t have to bother with attending next year and can stay home and watch the Real World marathon. Or something.

Man, I hope the clone has a better ass than me. Really, I do. She probably won’t write about the shape of her morning poo either.

*I can’t even pretend to lie about that. She is every bit as cute as everyone says. Perhaps even more cute. And I still sort of want to put her in a snow globe. I now feel the urge to snap my wrist.

It’s a Con Thang, y’all

I’m sitting here on a in aisle 31, seat F of a jet plane pointed at Chicago, sitting next to Shawn, who is wearing the cutest boots in all the world. And I don’t even want to let her go because she’s the last link to Journalcon that I have left. And she has convinced herself that I will be getting on her plane to New York too. We cling to our little denials to keep from being bummed that Journalcon Superstar is over. It’s working out for us right now. Enough to try to write this entry.

So Journalcon 03.

Esteban dropped me off at the airport early early early in the morning. It was dark and cold and nothing was making any sense. I didn’t even put on makeup because the irises of my eyes refused to dilate and everything was too bright. I’d like to think that if I had been more awake, I would have noticed that the lovely Trance Jen was on the plane with me. But I am stupid when I am sleepy. I landed in Austin and there was country music playing. My first minutes in Texas and the soundtrack is country music and there is a random smell of armpit.

I was going to try to do a coherent narrative, but will rely upon the crutch of a bulleted entry once more. Wait, superlatives, like in my junior high year book!

Most Alcoholic Beer: During the mixer on Friday night, BienSoul, Leebo Zeebo, Sundry and I had a mini – 12% Beer get-together in front of the web cam. We were bumming that Ladee wasn’t in attendance as well, because we would have 60% Beer rather than 48%. Then Sundry told me to flash the cam my cleave. And I was like “Um… ok.” Because, hi, I’m easy. And now I know that someone somewhere has a screen capture of my cleave.

Best Celebrity Sighting: Because I love Elizabeth very much, even though I only met her on Friday, I talked her into approaching Curtis Armstrong. So now I can say that I shook the hand of Booger from Revenge of the Nerds. Yeah, baby… be impressed.

Best Celebrity Non-Sighting: Apparently I was brushed past R. Lee Emory and never realized it.

Best Nickname: ThatGrrrl is now Cake.

Best Secretive Ass Pinch: I think Amy got a fingerful of the Weetabodkin. Either that, or maybe it was Booger. (The guy who lives on royalty checks from Comedy Central, not the diarist Booger).

Best Bar: Sundry, Mare-Ingenii, Chauffi and I ended up at a bar on 6th Street called Spills or maybe Drinks. Or maybe it was like Brigadoon and is a different bar every night. When we walked in, we were the only girls in the place who weren’t employed by the bar. Also, they were serving these mini cups of Bacardi and Coke for Two Dollars. Which turned “Where’s my two dollars!?!” into the best joke ever. Soon, we were giggling and laughing like we were twelve years old at the display of boobies and ass under glass. Sundry and I decided that it was the antithesis of my Bad Bar. It was the Good Bar. But Austin is a Bad Town. Bad Town! Also, I think we witnessed a living breathing Gap ad changing into a Bacardi t-shirt. In fact, watching this man with his washboard abs and v-shaped shoulders… well, I think it made me a little pregnant. And then later, Morrissey was drunk dialing people on 6th Street, perhaps telling them that meat is murder.

Best Swag: There was so much, so much, so much. The 100 Weetamixes were gone in the blink of an eye. TranceJen (who was absolutely beautiful and not a Pomeranian) not only made these exceptional necklaces (mine is this incredible blue color that will perfectly match and perhaps counteract the bad jobu of my powder blue unlucky shirt) but also gave me a right sexy hematite choker necklace that will be worn at my next Bad Bar outing and will leave men quivering in its wake. Angeline brought me a custom-made corkboard with little beautiful red thumbtacks that match my retro kitchen. Chauffi gave me a battery operated Lucky Cat (which sounds a bit porno, does it not). And most impressive was the bottle of fifty Tylenol 3 from Mare. Codeine… when you care enough to send the very best.

Best stalking: I think I told Anna Beth that I have a girl crush on her and also wanted to kidnap her and put her into a snow globe. I’m expecting a restraining order any day now. But next time I blow out the candles on my birthday cake, my wish will be that I am adopted by the Chaos. Because all Chaos are incredibly beautiful.

Best Imitation of a Big Red Moon: Sundry’s pictures where I am drunk and very very red. Rosacea, you rock, yes you do.

Best Trucker Hat: Take one Chauffi, top with trucker hat complete with tag on top, combine with random creepy crawly sound effects (Doo da DOO Doo da DOO!) mix with two random Austinites, add the impulse to do a somersault, laugh until you fall down and cannot breathe.

Most Worthy Adversary: There is a weird private joke running on my diary about how Ladee Leroy is my arch nemesis. And poor Ladee Leroy doesn’t even know why (it’s a title of honor, actually, the best thing I could think of) but to her credit, has just gone along with it. Anyway, I was walking through the hotel lobby and then suddenly Ladee Leroy and I spotted each other from across the lobby. Without saying anything, we just both went into these mock martial arts, complete with sound effects (“Hooooahhhhhh”) and a chorus of “Fight! Fight!” from a group of onlookers. Then we were like “Hi, nice to meet you.” So we didn’t blow it out like our trash talk had suggested. Not only was I about to leave to go to the emergency room and have my knee x-rayed, but also, Ladee Leroy is beautiful in a way that leaves you stunned and out of breath. And I can’t mess that up. The world needs beauty like that. You’ve won this round, Ladee Leroy. Oh yes. But next time! And there will BE a next time! Mwaahahahahaha… cough cough…HA!

Best Internet Connection: Little City Coffee shop on Congress was the only place I ever managed to connect. Supposedly there was a wireless connection somewhere in the hotel, but it was mythical and amorphous and I couldn’t find a virgin to sacrifice.

Best Mopie-ism: Eating ain’t Cheating!

Best Hill: There is a very steepass hill between the Omni and Sixth Street. This, I’m certain, is there as a Darwinist approach to keeping the drunk population to a minimum. Chauffi, I-Girl, and I went out in search of a bratwurst, or possibly pancakes, or maybe even some combination thereof, however, about twenty feet from the hotel, I was talking and walking and then the next thing I remember was having a very intimate moment with the sidewalk. I can honestly say that I know what Austin tastes like. I can only imagine what it might have looked like to an observer, sort of a recreation of that scene when Han Solo gets frozen in carbon and they drop him on the ground. And you know that saying about how when drunk people fall, they are so relaxed that they don’t get hurt? Yeah, that’s a lie. For some reason, I got all macho and kept saying that I was fine, I was fine, I was just going to nonchalantly lie on the sidewalk with my head in I-Girl’s lap and pant, in what I wanted to believe was a very seductive and cool manner. I-Girl limped with me back to the hotel and put me in my elevator and I was confused because I didn’t even try to mess with Texas and here it was, kicking my ass. Casualties: Right ankle, twisted, swollen and bruised; left knee, scraped, swollen and bruised; right knee, scraped, minor bruise; right hand, scraped, sliced index finger; lips, still right sexy; dignity, maintained only by the force of sheer will, because while Austin may have kicked my ass, I decided I would not let it take my name.

Best Scary Moment: If you rode the elevator up to the 20th floor, you could look out into the steel girder ceiling of the atrium. And then poop your pants because it was strangely terrifying in a way that the view from the 19th floor was not. Everyone laughed until we went up there and then it wasn’t so funny. It’s still a mystery, but it was some freaky shit, yo.

Most Offensive Body Odor: When my left knee started swelling so much that it required capitalization and became The Knee, I decided that I would meander over to the emergency room and have them x-ray the thing because honestly, I have had some pretty spectacular falls, given that I live in a state that is covered in ice more than 50% of the year, but I have never seen some of the hella swelling and bruise action from a simple tumble. The concierge recommended Brackenridge Hospital, which was filled to the brim with frightening people in the waiting room, including a woman holding a blood-soaked gauze pad to her arm, however, they took me into the non-urgent care, had me change into a hospital robe (Interesting bit of Trivia: Do you know that a pair of black Tinkerbell panties are completely visible through your average white hospital robe? It’s true!), did an x-ray of my most impressive swelling, asked for three forms of identification, got confused when I was already wearing a hospital bracelet, and then dropped me off with a prescription for drugs purportedly better than codeine (as if there is such a thing!) outside the business office. I was pissed about having to wait, and relieved that my leg wasn’t broken because I suspect that in Texas, they would have shot me. So I sat there and returned the numerous voice mails from people who were nervous about my disappearance, when this lady, wearing shower flip flops and a house dress that clearly had not been washed in a month, sat down five chairs away from me. The smell of unwashed ass permeated the hallway. Then she tried to jump the line and get into the office ahead of me. So I knocked her down and kicked her with my good leg, screaming “What’s the frequency, Florence?”.

Best Eddie Izzard reference: No I didn’t. Except that maybe I did. Or not.

Best Events That I Missed Completely: The Math Plus One dinner, where everyone was crying and laughing and being witty. Getting kicked out of room 705. The Special Event where my arch nemesis rocked everyone off their asses and then sat back and watched as people picked up their own asses and begged to have them rocked again. And also when Chauffi and Mare played Hansel and Gretl and got lost, only instead of a witch, they found a crack den.

Biggest annoying thing: People who only talk to your boobs.

Best Bouncer: At Crocodile Rocks, the big muscular guy at the door carded me. Except that I couldn’t find my id in my backpack and he didn’t have a flashlight, so he wasn’t going to let me in. Then I remembered that I was still wearing a hospital bracelet and right there was my birthdate. I showed it to him and he looked at me and said “71??? Really???” I almost made out with him right there on the steps.

Best Abs: I couldn’t really get out of my chair at karaoke very often, but instead, people brought things to me. Chauffi was my drink bitch. Mare MacGyver’d an ice bag out of a napkin bag. Timbrat kept me in good spirits, informing me of his recent URL registration. And Sundry brought over hot men named Vin who let me strum his six-pack and fondle his biceps and was hot in a way that made me want to cry. And have I mentioned how fucking cool Sundry is? And just as gorgeous as her pictures. (And yes, it’s official; I’ve just run out of synonyms for “gorgeous” and will be forced to reuse words.)

Best Karaoke Song Ever: That would be Monty and “One Night In Bangkok”. Screw Murray Head, man, I want Montykins to release a K-Tel album which is then sold by infomercial and then the operators better be standing fucking by.

Best Breakfast: Shawn, Amanda, Lisa Marie, Beth, Mopie, Shawn’s friend (whose name I’ve just spaced out) and I went to breakfast at the Hickory Grill on Congress and then celebrated BaconCon. Bacon is good, bacon is grand, bacon is a party in your greasy little hand. Go Bacon, it’s your birthday.

Best Crushes: I now officially am crushing on the following: M.Giant (who proves that Minnesotans are right sexy), Rob (who doesn’t love a bad boy of lawn care?), Shawn, Chairman Chao, Anna Beth (well, duh), Mopie (the first Online Diarist I’ve ever slept with!), Sundry, Trance Jen, Chiara (who made me laugh and laugh), Cruel Irony, Biensoul (who is my sister in abusing our Lane Bryant cards), Elizabeth, Shannon, Austin (the waiter, not the city), Monty, Gwen (Seriously, it’s not fair that these people are so funny and also so beautiful!).

Best Anonymous Gossip: someone hooked up with someone else, someone might have hooked up but no one’s saying anything, someone slid the top half of a pizza under someone else’s door, someone got overly friendly with my granny arm flab, someone kept buying me drinks, someone can’t stand someone else, someone hasn’t shaved her legs in a ridiculous amount of time and even so, you totally cannot tell and it makes me a little jealous, someone is incredibly beautiful, someone else is too, someone missed a little pirate girl more than words, someone was effusive, someone else never was in their life, and there were times someone wished she had a blow dart gun.

So, basically, it was Journal Camp. I think it should be a week long event, at least, because there were people I never did get to say hi to and now am very bummed. A Reunion of people you’ve never met before but by the end of the weekend, everyone’s in love with everyone and vowing to have each other’s babies and name them Splash Mo Berry, and people are confessing and happy and have only slept 8 hours total all weekend. And then it’s over and you’re fitting six people in a pick up truck (surprisingly well, I might add) and you’re sharing a smile with someone because you know that they are thinking the same thing as you, and you can’t believe that you’re about to get on planes and split the difference of the country becoming a math word puzzle, if one journaler’s plane goes west at 25000 feet and another journaler’s plane goes east at 27000 feet, how long will it be before they can’t bear it any longer and pine away madly for next year’s JournalCon.

There is a grief counselor available in the Comments section

Gone to Journal Camp

Wish you were here.

(PS: I’ll check into the cam around 5:30 PM CST on Friday and wave at you.)

Piffle

So Journalcon is like four minutes away and I’m having my standard pre-trip panic attack, right on schedule. My Weetamix swag is in various levels of completion. I don’t know what I’m going to wear. My dry cleaning won’t be ready until Thursday night. I have to stop and buy liquor for my hotel room (party at Chez Bix, booyah!). Places to go, things to do, debauchery to plan, busy busy busy.

What is more, I officially have to write 10 pages of a story for next Tuesday. And that, my friends, is like pulling teeth for some reason. I have this idea, two ideas actually, but I don’t even want to start writing it down because it will somehow put boundaries on my ideas and make it all ordinary. That’s the only way I can describe it. Writers are so dumb sometimes, I know. But I have no idea when I’m going to write this thing, because every minute between now and then will be taken up with many things that relate to writing, in a way, but actually involve very little writing. It’s all a mixed blessing. I guess I know what I’ll be doing on the plane.

Speaking of nothing in particular, you know this thing with Roy (as in Siegfried And) getting mauled by Montecore? And Barry Manilow breaking his nose? And also John Ritter dying? It’s almost like the universe is making editorial comments about mediocrity.

I don’t know about you, but if I were CarrotTop, I would be pretty damned jumpy.

Scene: 9:30 pm. Weetabix has just come home from class and is eating dinner while Esteban works on his pc and watches the Cub’s baseball game.

Weetabix : How was your day today?

Esteban : Miserable…

Weetabix : Miserable? What happened?

Esteban : Nothing… just too much to do and not enough time to do it. Same old, same old. I feel very out of sorts today.

Weetabix : Did you take your medicine? Did you eat today and drink enough water?

Esteban : Yes, yes and yes. Maybe I’m just getting ready to miss you this weekend.

Weetabix :(all afluster) You’ll be fine. You’ll barely notice I’m gone.

Esteban : Aw, come on, admit it, that was charming as hell.

Weetabix : It was. I’m surprised my pants are still on, because you almost charmed them off me.

Esteban : Damn. How was your class?

Weetabix : It was good, except I was way tired because I haven’t been getting enough sleep. Last night, you were crazy.

Esteban : I didn’t get to sleep until 4 am… sorry about that. Was I tossing and turning a lot and keeping you up?

Weetabix :Between you and Tilly… man.

Esteban : I know… I remember she was attacking the bed like a freakazoid.

Weetabix :You didn’t feed her before you came to bed, so she was active all night because she was hungry. And then you… you woke me up to tell me about it?

Esteban :I did no such thing.

Weetabix :Yes, you did. You said “Weet… weet… the cat attacked the bed…. she just came up here and punched me in the butt and then ran away!”

Esteban : I remember none of this.

Weetabix :It was like you suddenly were channeling Ralph Wiggum. I expected you to add “And her breath smells like cat food.”

Esteban : She did punch me in the butt. I don’t know what was up with that.

Weetabix :I think it was cat speak for “Hey asshole, feed me.” I’m afraid that I’ll drop dead in this house and the cat will eat my face off.

Esteban : I don’t know why we put up with her.

Weetabix : I think she’s wondering why she puts up with us.

Esteban : Did you have a good class tonight?

Weetabix : We were supposed to write something fresh and I didn’t… I used the first page from my “Flea Flicker” story because it was in first person and fit the assignment.

Esteban : So… you cheated.

Weetabix : I didn’t cheat! Why does everyone say that?! I just didn’t write something usable last week. Also, I kind of resent some of the writing prompts. I don’t have a problem thinking of things to write about and I don’t want to waste time writing things when I’ve got about three story ideas I can’t get to. The quality of writing in the class is getting better though. Although one guy read his own work and did the whole “spoken word” thing that I can’t stand.

Esteban : For example.

Weetabix : Well, remember when we went to Artstreet and saw Mark Turcotte read? The way he reads, that’s a legitimate way of reading a poem… very performance arty and using the rythyms of language to build in your voice. It works well with poetry, but with fiction, you just have to be more subtle than that. You can’t sound like Martha Stewart, with the emphasis on the wrong words. I swear, he had a sentence like “my father and I went down to the river”, only it was stilted and more like “my father and I went DOWN to the Ri…ver.” I felt like snapping my fingers after he was finished. I think I’m the only person who finds that ridiculously pretentious though. To everyone else, it probably sounded like strong writing, but if you need to be there using your mouth to say “look Mom, I sure am writing now!” then your prose probably isn’t as good as you think it is.

Esteban : See, that’s why I will never be a fiction writer. I would just be like… um, yeah, mister writer person. Oh, that reminds me, did you post my thank you to your readers?

Weetabix : No, not yet.

Esteban : WEETABIX! Now they’re going to think I’m an asshole because I didn’t respond to them! Oh man! I can’t believe you didn’t post it! You said you were going to post it.

Weetabix : I’m sorry, I was very busy today and then when I got home, Disco had hijacked my site, so I didn’t update. He talked about my nipples.

Esteban : You know, some of the emails I got talked about your boobs too.

Weetabix : Well, they are something to talk about.

Esteban :That they are.

Weetabix : My boobs should have a show in Vegas.

Esteban : Or Branson.

Weetabix : Nah, the Geritol sect could not handle the wonder that is my boobs… which, by the way, are shrinking, in a disturbing turn of events. (looks down at the little cup of pudding she is eating) GAHG!

Esteban : What?

Weetabix : This pudding? Expired over a month ago.

Esteban : Ooof. Does it still taste ok?

Weetabix : I think it tasted…. smokey.

Esteban : Smokey pudding?

Weetabix :Yeah…. needless to say I won’t be finishing it.

Esteban : Ah yes, the smokey mold. That’s karma because you didn’t post my thank you and now all of those people think I’m an asshole.

Weetabix : You’re not an asshole. You’re Mayor McNice of Awesomeville.

Esteban :You have to tell them that you’re the asshole who didn’t post it.

Weetabix : It’s not that big of a deal. You have this overinflated sense of righteousness.

Esteban : Weetabix!

Weetabix : Ok, ok, I’ll post your thank you in the morning.

Esteban : And write that you’re the asshole. Post that so they know that it wasn’t me being a jerk and not responding to them directly.

Weetabix : Yup, I’m the asshole.

Esteban : And you’re going to make it up to me by giving me oral pleasure. Post that too.

Weetabix : See, you say you’re not a fiction writer….

Dear Weetabix Readers,

Thank you all so much for all of your birthday wishes. I had planned on writing each of you back with a thank you, but when the number of well-wishers topped over a 100 I kind of gave up on that idea and asked Weet if she would post my thank you on her diary for me.

Your e-cards and messages really made my day. Thank you all so much. I will thank Weet in a much more personal manner later.

Esteban

What the heck did you guys tell him???

P.S. I’m an asshole.

Lynch the Counterfeits

Fans of the deceitful Weetabix,

My name is Disco The Kid. Weet and I know each other very well because we both used to belong to an elite group of journal writers who all thought we were better than all of you, of course that was before I quit the group and found Jesus. You think you know who Weetabix is? You have no idea. I have to tell you that you have all been had! You have all been shamboozled, shenanigan-ed, even been privy to exclusive and sinister hyjinx!

I have stolen Weetabix’s password and taken over her god-forsaken diary because she is the first on my list to be out-ed. I was once like Weetabix. That is why I must tell you all the truth. You guys pop over here day after day to peek into a little world that is presented in a VERY charming and almost Laura Ingles-esque fashion. You don’t see this bitch when she is walking the halls of the American offices of 12% Beer biting her nails and calling us all ‘sheep-fucking shit eaters.’ You don’t hear about the assistant she hired to tweak her nipples so she always looks ‘happy’ on camera. You don’t hear how she refers to her readers as ‘the customers.’

I have since quit that writer’s group in an attempt to save my own soul because we are/were nothing short of an international liars club who psychologically (and some of us even monetarily) benefit from your undying attention!

Before I go any further let me share with you all an email I received from Weetabix just recently when she thought I was ‘on the level.’

Dear Disco,

I need you to update my diary for me today. Now don’t argue with all that ‘I’m so busy with my Sars comic’ crap because no one thinks that shit is funny but you. Besides, we both know that you are on the Internet twenty-four hours a day luring little boys to that convenient store near your house.

(That was before I found Jesus. Lord be praised!)

I have to go get my hair dyed because my kid is coming home from that private school I shipped him off to and the little bastard is probably going to ask me a bunch of stupid questions like, Can I have some money? Or ‘Is my daddy really dead?’ So write a bunch of pretty crap and tell those fucking parasites how honored you are that I let plankton like you write in my journal! Don’t let me down or I’ll tell THE KINGPIN.

WEET

You see, our Internet fame made us drunk with power and sin while we made up fictional lives for ourselves and even began researching appropriate writing styles for our assumed alias’. You can’t let these animals get away with this any longer! I am glad that I can help put a stop to this madness. I hope you and my lord will forgive me for my past indiscretions. I am a changed man.

The rest is up to you.

Jesus loves you,

Disco The Kid

P.S: That fucking Sundry is next!

Essence of winter sleep is on the night

Thank you to everyone who sent Esteban a birthday greeting. I don’t think he has ever really understood the scope of this diary thing and now he’s a bit stunned by the response. He keeps laughing about how many there are and is in this great mood. So thank you!

I was very productive over the weekend. Penny, Carissa and I had lunch at the Olive Garden on Friday (wherein I had to enact a stealth shift of my breasts inside my bra, which initiated a titillated laugh from a baby at an adjoining table, who I suspect might have been a breastfeed baby and expected an impromptu snack). Carissa and I were attempting to eat lightly with just soup and salad but ended up devouring more of Penny’s Chicken Alfredo Pizza than Penny did herself, when we realized that we had nothing going on that evening, so after some discussion about a trip to the Bad Bar (too tired for that) and miniature golf (they are all closed for the season, much to the relief of Carissa and myself), we decided to meet up at Penny’s for snacks, manicures, and Gone With The Wind. We drank Malibu and Diet Pepsi in Scarlett and Rhett mugs and discussed logistics for our excellent Halloween costumes for the upcoming company event (and no, I’m not telling yet). (Spoiler ahead’ jump down to the next paragraph if you don’t want to know) As much as I love Gone With The Wind, I always forget that it lasts about as long as the actual Civil War and also, that the last half hour is about as uplifting as the burning of Atlanta. I also forgot that Carissa loathes movies that don’t end well, so when Scarlett loses her baby, Bonnie Blue dies, Melanie dies, along with her own unborn baby, and then Scarlett gets dumped by Rhett in about twenty minutes time and then the movie’s final credits roll, Carissa exclaimed ‘Well, this movie TOTALLY SUCKS!’. And at midnight, who could really blame her. I tried to explain why the Margaret Mitchell had to kill Melanie and Bonnie Blue and the baby to show that there was no real need for Scarlett to love Rhett anymore and that her only motivation for begging was that she must have truly truly loved him, and really, the real villain of the whole thing was Ashley (oh Aaasshlay!) because why didn’t he ever tell her that he didn’t love her? Why did he string her along? And also, he’s a pansy-assed bitch of a man, in my humble opinion, who didn’t even deserve Melanie in the first place. So there.

But all in all, it was a lovely evening and I gave Penny a French Manicure and she earned a place forever in my heart because she remembers how I love only one kind of chip and that is a Dorito of the Cool Ranch clan. Which is one of those things that always impress me, when people remember little things like that. For instance, Joel always remembers that I’m allergic to milk fat and June always remembers that I don’t like nuts in things so she leaves the nuts out of her incredible brownies, even though she herself adores walnuts and pecans. Sometimes you don’t have to specifically use the words ‘I really like you a lot and I’m glad you are my friend’, it’s just enough to have a bottle of Dasani water sweating happily in the car when you pick them up from the airport.

I endeavored throughout the rest of my productive weekend, going to the salon so that Stacy could once again make my hair match my eyebrows (seriously, the thing with my eyebrows being two shades darker than the rest of my natural hair? Not funny, God, not funny at all.), dropped off the dry cleaning, got the car washed, and then went to Target where I blew an incredible $200 on what exactly I do not know. I know that there were vitamins in there and also some Tigi hair products and some mascara. I think also some boxes of cereal and a bottle of bleach. The only thing that wasn’t completely boring was that I finally broke down and purchased the latest Coldplay CD and put a penny in Chris Martin’s ‘Buy A Ring For Gwynnie’ jar. But other than that, I have no idea how I spent $200 at Target. I hate that they market specifically to my demographic and I am obviously completely taken with their spell and turn into random Gen X Female Shopper with Reasonable Percentage of Disposable Income. I even ignored the siren call of their DVD and wrapping paper sections and yet still, there it was, $200 fitting neatly into two bags and a random bottle of bleach. It’s a mystery, it really is. I think this brain washing is how they got Isaac Mizrahi on board too. Because it’s the only thing that seems rational.

After that, Esteban and I drove to Appleton where we met Ward & June and also Nan and Bill (their best friends) to celebrate Esteban’s impending 33rd birthday at the excellent Mongolian barbeque. We drove home and continued more of our obsession with Six Feet Under, although mine seems to be more with Peter Krause and how incredibly beautiful he is. Then we sacked out and snuggled in between my latest bedding coup, a set of 750 threat-count white sheets and pillow cases with a single navy stripe embroidered along the edge. The best part of the morning was when we woke up and I was lying there with my head on his chest and he said ‘I would like to go out for breakfast this morning’ where would you like to go?’ And I said ‘Someplace with pancakes.’ And Esteban replied ‘Well, duh.’ As though it would never have even occurred to him that there could have been another answer. Then later, as we were fighting Packer game traffic to get across town, it occurred to me that we never did decide where we were going to go for breakfast, so I asked where he was going, to which he replied ‘IHOP, because obviously I love you a great deal.’ Which was never really in question.

Yup, the Quest for Pancakes. Best part of the entire weekend.

After that, I dropped him off at his Dorkathalon and attempted to go shopping, but found nothing to my liking other than a new candle at the White Barn Candle Company that smells like firewood, but doesn’t have a pretty cover for when you’re not burning it. I got distracted for several minutes in Williams & Sonoma and then had a delightful moment of serendipity when my cellphone rang and I became one of those people smiling and having a lovely time sitting on a mall bench outside the Pottery Barn, where the reception was the clearest. I wanted to endeavor back through the mall, but I felt as though the morning had peaked and thus ended up exiting through one of the anchor stores (not before stopping at the Lanc’me counter to impulse buy yet another lipstick) and eschewing further searches for the perfect black skirt to go with the Rockin’ Boots for this weekend. Ah well. Austin will not know the Fat Girl In Boots and will likely never realize how close they came to greatness.

I went home and scurried around the house, completing a million and one projects, and realizing that the ant has morphed into a grasshopper and Summer Slacker Girl is no more. Bye Summer Slacker Girl. I’ll miss you and your Birkenstocks and random summer outfits based upon a warehouse supply of 42 cheap t-shirts and various jeans. I’ll miss the twenty minutes from alarm to shower to out the door. I’ll miss the dinners of Special K and Smart Start cereals. I’ll miss Clinique’s Happy and the golden touch of the pool making a definitive line between That Which Is Covered By Swimsuit and That Which Is Not.

It’s probably time she left anyway. It’s been a strange week here in Wisconsin. Gardens have weeks ago been stripped of their last tomatoes and less sturdy vegetables and are now getting turned over, tops into the soil and being put to sleep with the brush piled up on the curb, ready to be taken to the town’s compost heap.

This afternoon, I was driving up the hill with the spectacular views of the city and the bay. It’s only three blocks from my house but it might as well be a million miles away. I take some raw comfort in knowing that my property taxes are based upon that view just the same. There were two fawns grazing on some late garden fare about four blocks away. Deer love roses, especially when they leaf out to grab up the diminishing light. The weather is warm and crazy and sunny right now, but that weak sort of afternoon tea light that starts around noon and lasts less time than you think it should. It’s freaking out the geese. I was driving into work and watching above, two enormous clouds of Canada geese veeing across the sky, one going south, one going north. You should have heard the honking, lots of geese road rage shouting ‘wrong way, jackass!’ Mass confusion for the water fowls never bodes well. Even with all of this pseudo-summer, autumn is still creeping in on cat’s paws. I never know quite when it happens. In late August and September, roadside ditches are swallowed whole by explosions of purple loosestrife, goldenrod, milkweeds bursting into homecoming pompoms and miscellaneous weeds taller than your tallest uncle. But then, something happens, maybe the first killing frost, who knows, but there is some sort of signal and everything shrinks back. There is less stuff and more space between the buildings; expressways clear for arctic winds to howl through. In the fields, there are yellow Lego blocks of cut straw and fewer cows and the houses seem smaller. The landscape is beautiful in this sort of breathtaking painful way. There is no such thing as red, only brilliant deep blood crisp heartbeats. This is flannel weather. Each night is one of bonfires and woolen socks and honks of anonymous geese in the dark above clouds the colors of bruises and a moon sitting fat and low and orange waiting to be plucked from the sky. It’s as though nature itself is retreating, leaving us all to fend for ourselves. In answer, there is almost a palpable shift toward the convivial. Everyone’s making busy to sit and do nothing for six months. People are happier. You can almost hear the friendliness bubbling up in a stew pot of split pea soup. Perhaps they are responding to a whisper on the wind, nudging us to be kind along with the creaks and squeaks of ancient cider presses.

A few days ago, I spent my lunch driving across town in response to Esteban’s offhanded comment that he was in need of a hug (something that I didn’t realize was that extraordinary, but several people have assured me that it was one of those schmoopy couple things that we normally don’t discuss with anyone) and to bring him some chocolate milk, I took the river drive rather than the annoying busy main fairway, simply to enjoy the centuries old hickories and maples that canopy across from the graveyard and also to nod to Mr. Minahan, who went down on the Titanic and had his skull unceremoniously stolen by teenagers when I myself was a teenager and for which I always feel somewhat apologetic and therefore always pay homage with a smile. Like most people in Green Bay, this is a favored route because it’s more or less free of stop lights and also allows for some uninterrupted speeding, as there are few places for cops to hide in the hills. Along this way, there is a tiny little bar, formerly owned by an ancient Lombardi-era Packer player who now has a hole in his throat. There were two men sitting on barstools right near the street with an impromptu table, a cooler full of longnecks. At first glance, I thought they were perhaps just enjoying the afternoon sun, but then I noticed they had a sign, which read ‘Cop Ahead’. I slowed to read the sign and then smiled at them and they both lifted their Millers to me in a salute. I waved and fell a little bit more in love with Green Bay all over again. Sometimes, it’s a wonder how you could not.

Happy Birthday Esteban

Do me a favor this morning?

It’s Esteban’s birthday today. He’s always Mister “No Big Deal” about his birthday, but at the same time, he’s all “It’s my birthday! Wheee!” so I think it’s just an act. I think it would make his day if we filled his email box with ‘Happy Birthday Esteban’ greetings, so can you help out? Or you can use this link for a different subject line… or make one up.

Thanks! You’re a peach!

Mwah,
Weetabix
