Sticky wicket

This will go down in history as the Summer of The Biblical Plagues on my house. Seriously. First it was the mice, which I took care of with four live traps and one cat. Then these itty bitty ants showed up in the kitchen addition. Some Terro ant stuff took care of that. Now, when we came back from our trip this weekend, there are like nine houseflies in our house. We went from having zero flies to nine. Or maybe nine hundred. They’re hard to count because they keep moving around. It’s weird because we NEVER have flies in the house. I don’t even own a fly swatter. Mostly because the ones that do get in are stalked and quickly (and disgustingly) crunched by Tilly. But she seems to be mostly apathetic to the fly invasion. Perhaps she is resting on the mouse laurels. Which sounds like mouse slang for their reproductive organs. If mice had slang. Or something. Er. Yeah.

At lunch yesterday I have halfheartedly embarked upon a new project. I want to make pretty glass magnets, but sort of cutting edge ones, for my cube shelf (to replace my plastic toy dinosaurs, which were looking a little’ Jurassic Era on Acid). Eh. I’m going to try it. And then most likely abandon it to my storage bins which are called Where Good Projects Go To Die. I’m already not happy with it. I couldn’t find the right-sized paper punch for the glass bauble thingies. And the glass thingies are irregularly shaped, which bugs me. And I couldn’t find good magnets. Yes, I’m anal about the damn magnets that you won’t even see. Ah well. The entire thing is resting upon needing the correct sized paper punch, because I am completely inept at cutting circles. Also, I’m better at conceptualizing than follow through. Too many water hazards and I’m all ‘Screw it, let’s go drink martinis in the clubhouse.’

So after I finished gathering glass thingies and magnets at a Craft Store Of Gay (TM Gawain), I wandered over to the hardware store where I found fly strips, of the type you see in stereotypical dirty diners and also crack dens. Six for a buck. Seemed far less messy than trying to hunt and kill them with a fly swatter. Also, I had slammed two of them with a West Elm catalogue and both had flown away in sort of a crooked pattern, obviously a little shaken by the lovely home furnishings in subdued green and lavender but no worse for wear. I liked the idea of the strips. It would show the other flies that I wasn’t messing around. I was instating Fly Purgatory.

Hard to believe that I was once a vegetarian, is it not? It’s sort of ridiculous, my sliding scale of the preciousness of life. Spiders are ushered gently outside (unless they are very ugly, in which case I either shriek for Esteban or ignore them and hope that they leave the premises insulted, vowing never to return.) I refused to kill the mice. I will almost kill myself to save a butterfly. But ants and flies? They took their lives into their own hands when they crossed the threshold of my house. In fact, in rereading that statement, the butterflies are Lacy Peterson, while flies are ugly people and I apparently am the American public.

Thus, I purchased the fly strips and figured that I’d have the problem taken care of in no time. I went home and read the instructions. Unwind with a gentle circular motion. Ok. I pulled the string on it and almost gagged. Out came this intestinal track of sticky sweet-smelling eviscera. Of course, where to hang the trap before one opened it? I however did not. I wandered around the kitchen. The logical place seemed to be from the light in the center of the kitchen, but I would certainly walk too close to it and end up getting dead flies stuck to my face (which, actually, is more preferable than the disgusting fly strip). Every place which seemed logical would either certainly catch me or the cat. Then it went for my breast and I realized that I had mistakenly purchased a strip that was infused with the strongest epoxy known to man. It seemed to be a mix of molasses and some James Bond super stick stuff. I suspect that it could snag 747’s out of the sky. It was then that I realized that stringly my house with this stuff was frought with disaster, and threw the strip in the garbage, where it promptly stuck to the wall and then my fingers as I attempted to stuff it into the bag. Then it somehow wrapped around a discarded box and somehow closed the garbage bag of its own power. It frightened me. It really did. I thing it is really the Blob. Or strips of dead Blob that were turned into jerky. Yes. It’s Blob jerky.

Off topic for just a second, but seriously, the Blob was the best movie monster ever. There was no rationalizing with the Blob. Frankenstein was swayed by pretty girls and kittens. The Mummy could probably have been distracted by a sexy Egyptian woman in a gold bikini and dark fringe bangs. The Wolfman was only a problem one night a month. Cripes, my period does five times the damage of the Wolfman. And Dracula could be taken out by any number of ingenious methods. But the Blob? He was Jell-o, man. There’s no stopping the Blob. The Blob did not need a prop.

But back to the fly strip.

You would think I would have learned my lesson, but you know me. I cannot back down. I opened another strip, but this time did not unwind the entire thing. No. I made sort of a Tower of Death with the tape and set it carefully on the kitchen counter. Take that! By the time I went to bed, there were three flies defending their life on that thing. Ha! Excellent. Hopefully all nine (hundred?) will have committed sticky suicide by the time I get home. Vindication is sweet.

Note to self: use barbeque tongs to throw Tower Of Death away.

Note to self x2: throw away barbeque tongs.

More Gold and SuperGold folks. I love you all. I want to have your babies.

JessMess818 (who came through on her promise to upgrade last Friday)

And I renewed Quoted’s account too.

You know’ I’m totally getting out easy on this upgrade link lovin’. Marn is writing whole guest entries for people.

Those generous Canadians!

I’d use other adjectives but I’m pretty sure Marn can kick my ass.

In other news, what the heck is up with NBC spinning off Joey Tribiani onto his own sitcom? Because now this means that there is no way he’s going to get together with Rachel. Even though I am seriously against the pairing, I was willing to suspend my disbelief. I WANTED them to be together if only it meant that everyone was paired off in twos, the little Noah’s ark of the sitcom world. You know’ Phoebe and Mike, Monica and Chandler, Rachel and Joey, and Ross and’ umm’. Gunther? I don’t know. Argh. But now no? They’ve been stringing me along with the Joey loves Rachel and then Rachel doesn’t have anything for Joey and now Rachel loves Joey, but now Joey is going to go to freaking California to have some yet-to-be-determined love interest and group of recycled ‘It’s Like, You Know’ actor friends?

This is pissing me off. Worse than when they do the ‘Hey, Monica used to be fat’ ha ha’ fat Monica! Riot! We are a riot!’ jokes. Worse than when they tried to convince us that Chandler isn’t gay. And where did the duck and chicken go? Huh? Huh? We were on a break!!

I think I need some time to myself now. I’ve clearly snapped.

Tch Tch Tch aah aah aaaaaaaah

Ok, the two truths and a lie thing.

I did act in a low budget horror movie when I was sixteen. The movie was called The Butcher and my character was stabbed repeatedly in the head. In fact, I found the hideous orange wig my character (Debbie Dumaflachee) wore (so that it could be placed over my stunt double, a wedge of head-shaped Styrofoam) hiding in my linen closet when I cleaned it out a few weeks ago. I also sang a beer theme song for part of the movie. I actually wrote the theme song too, but the tune was Rubber Ducky You’re The One, because while I might be talented in using words to give life to uteri and Bad Bar vignettes, I am no Ernie and Bert. And no, I never wrote an entry about it, mostly because it just hasn’t occurred to me to write about it, but I did mention it deep within this entry. Most of you said this was the lie for some reason.

You want to know the best thing about that movie? I wore a bleach splotched jean jacket through the entire thing. Quelle 1986! I think I had slouch socks too. Unfortunately, I only know of one person (Bob, the director) who has copies of the masterpiece that was The Butcher and last time I asked, he wouldn’t give out any copies. Otherwise I would so digitize that and put it on the internet. It is so spectacularly bad that it would make you pee your pants. Really.

Also, there really was a human skeleton buried in my great grandparent’s neighbor’s back yard. One spring, I saw something sticking up out of the ground and warned the neighbor about the sharp stick. Later, when he went out to mow his lawn, he tried to pull out the stick but it didn’t come out. He dug it out and discovered that it was a broken human femur. He called the police, who determined it was far too old to have been a murder victim. Later, anthropologists from the state capital came up and investigated the remains and determined that they were only about four or five hundred years old and thus not historically ‘relevant’. They took a bunch of measurements of the yards on that end of the block and theorized that it was most likely a Native American burial mound, one of many that dot the area. It did end up being an important find, however, in that the beads found with the skeleton showed that the tribe (the name of which I’ve since forgotten) was in the area much earlier than had been estimated. So that was true. And I never dug in my grandmother’s garden from that point on.

Which leaves us to the Seventeen article. Which was false. It was Sassy magazine, as someone correctly answered on the comments section. And I was 18. The most convincing lies are the ones that are the closest to the truth. Only 19% of my coworkers got mine right. Someone else in the department is apparently a better liar than I am. They are at 15%.

And since I’m tying up loose ends, WilliamTells has upgraded to Supergold. Which makes me very happy indeed.

Perhaps I should run a pledge drive in which everyone buys me a Lincoln. Or sends me to Journalcon.

Speaking of which, I bought my ticket to Austin the other day’. Oh, holy hell, the cat just farted and then had the audacity to look up at me. Like I did it. Somedays I think she’s really a dog in a cat suit.

You know, Esteban never believes that she blows ass. Never. I don’t know why. I’ve pointed out that she has a rectum and he understands how the mammalian digestive system works, but he just cannot comprehend the Tilly having gas. But then, sometimes he’s incredibly dense about such issues. For the first two years we dated, I had him utterly convinced that girls didn’t fart and only needed to excrete once a month. He asked how that worked and I told him ‘We eat mostly fruits and vegetables, which just gets converted to pee and that’s why we have to pee so much. But when we poop, it’s a big ordeal, and that’s why we go to the bathroom in groups sometimes.’ And he nodded and said ‘Oh!’ as if every mystery in the world had finally been solved in his head.

He’ll deny that if you ask him about it. And then bring up the fact that I didn’t know where the marks on toilet seats came from.

But back to Austin’ yeah’ bought the ticket. Yep. That’s pretty much it right there.

This is the part where I add in a little commercial for JournalCon/Web Writer’s Weekend, but let’s just give a little cheer and be done with it, shall we? Ok.

JournalCon! Woot!!

Good show. Let’s move on.

I’m back on the no sugar/flour thing, after falling hard off the carbless wagon over the weekend. I made New York Strips and chicken breasts on the grill on Monday night so that I’d have a huge stock of protein through the week. I have to say that it was the best steak I have ever made. I highly recommend Chicago Steak Seasoning from The Spice House, because it makes anything beefy taste incredible, particularly burgers and steaks. (If you’re going to order the stuff, also get some Fox Point Seasoning aka Lake Shore Drive Seasoning for fish and veggies, because that sprinkled on broiled salmon is just about as close as you can get to heaven). I also made brown rice and fresh steamed peas for myself, since Esteban worked until 3 am in the morning. He’s having an insane race to finish an article on time, because he lost two weeks when Tom and Gen died. This makes him a real treasure around the house because he’s so prickly and grouchy that I can barely believe it. He actually blamed me for leaving the garage door open last night and when I pointed out that he was the last one outside and in the garage when he took out the garbage (yes! I had to bribe him with a big kiss, but he did it. Actually, he took out the one half-full garbage bag in the kitchen and then when I came home, I was like ‘Dude’ garbage?’ and he was confused. Confused! I had to explain to him that when I said ‘take the garbage out’ I meant that it should go out to the curb, as it was garbage day. Which was a surprise to him because we’ve lived here for seven years and he still can’t remember the garbage day. And then he was like ‘ooooh’. So the other bags in the garage too?’ Yesssss sweetie. I suspect that it’s been so long since he’s dealt with the garbage that he actually has forgotten the procedure.) and then he further pursued that it was my fault because I opened the garage door ORIGINALLY. Oh. Ok.

He has left for a business trip to Syracuse and he swears to me that he’ll stop being all Inspector Asshole when he returns, because he will take some time off and try to recenter. I had to take him to the airport this morning while it was still dark and I’m too tired to celebrate my empty house. Actually, I’ll spend the next three days trying to pick up the fallout of his last evening here (seriously’ Tasmanian Devil? Meet my husband, the clutter tornado).

I did feel bad in that I didn’t return his lucky traveling dog tags. He loaned them to me when I went to San Francisco (and was certain I was going to die) but they are still in my laptop bag, which is at work. I offered him my new traveling rune (which I purchased at the Ren Faire, to replace my lost one’ it’s not as good though), but he wasn’t interested. And now he’ll die in a fiery plane crash and I’ll feel bad because my last entry before his death, I was talking about how big an ass he was and that he doesn’t take out the garbage. How do I know this? I think I just heard my Greek chorus admonishing me for being a bitch.

People who play Fantasy Football’ I need your advice. Should I protect Peyton Manning for my roster this year? I have to have it in by Saturday, the draft is Sunday, and I’m not sure who I should protect and I haven’t had time to research it. Here’s my team from last year:

have funky glasses. My migraine has dissolved into a minor irritation. I still have tightness in my shoulders, but music isn’t inciting me to murder anyone and my appetite is back again (thanks to a foray into carbs while I had the migraine’ big mistake because now I could eat a Buick), so I’m guessing that it will continue to trail away into nothing by the weekend. Yay. Go Advil. It’s your birthday.

Have you seen ‘Queer Eye for the Straight Guy’ yet?

Oh my hell, get thee to the Bravo network!

It’s part Trading Spaces and part What Not To Wear, tossed with Will & Grace and sprinkled with Absolutely Fabulous. Five crack commandos (heee! Oh, I make myself giggle), armed with their killer fashion sense and witty snarks make over the entire life of some poor confused straight man. Each of the Fab Five have a specialty in the Fabulous Arts (like the A Team, only it’s the gAy Team) of cooking, fashion, home design, personal styling, and culture. In two episodes, they’ve painted, decluttered, taken down a unibrow, explained about why men should not wear pleats unless they weigh 120 pounds (hallelujah!), given praise to wooden hangers, and gave lessons how to make lavosh.

I made Esteban watch the first episode with me (his response ‘This is going to leave me traumatized, isn’t it?’) and I doubt we’ve laughed that much at one television show. Not only are the boys hysterical, but they are so GOOD! In the beginning, as I was saying ‘See?’ to Esteban while they explained to Butch that his long hair actually made him look thinning on the top, he scoffed, but then when he saw the spectacular results, he was interested. As the show was wrapping up, he said ‘You want me to go on that show, don’t you?’ to which I replied, ‘No, I want ME to go on that show.’ I love them, each and every one of them. I want Kyan (a cute mix of Dylan McDermott and Eric McCormack) to run his hands through my hair. I want Carson to take me shopping and tell me I look thin in those jeans. I want Thom to paint my dining room red and then buy me a three thousand dollar chofa. And most of all, I want Ted, the cooking guru. Not to do anything. I just want him. He would understand my obsession with not having my iced tea throttled about. We could spend Saturdays running around to little stores for just the right ingredient. I would so love to be his hag. And I think he would love to be my fag as well. We would be a match made in Harrods.

Alton Brown, Verizon Guy, and now Ted the cooking guy. I’m beginning to see a pattern.

More people who have upgraded to various levels of gold Diaryland memberships:

Rock Paper Scissors
Halo Askew

And then there’s Ruth Anne, who rocks because she doesn’t have a diary and donated some money anyway to keep Diaryland alive and kicking.

You all get a big ‘Mwah’ from me.

We were having this goofy thing at work where each day one person sends out two truths and a lie and people have to guess which one is the lie. Here are mine. How well do you think you know me?

Weetabix:

A. wrote an article for Seventeen magazine when she was 17.

B. acted in a horror movie when she was 16.

C. found a human skeleton in her grandparent’s neighbor’s back yard.

Put your guesses in the comments section!

Wince

You’ll notice that I brought the old layout back. There’s Chubby Tink, back to her normal job of sprinkling the title bar with fairy dust. Wave at her. She likes attention. She’s a diva.

Much thanks to everyone who signed up for the Diaryland coolness. I hope that we took some of the heat off of Andrew’s server bills. I mean, thirty bucks for a year? That’s like, one movie with popcorn and soda. Seriously, I would think a year’s worth of Diaryland is more fun than an evening spent with the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (which, by the way, blew major amounts of ass). And if you are already Supergold, maybe buy 10,000 banner ads or something. Right now, you can buy 1000 ads for just 99 cents. It’s a good deal and you’ll gain new readers too. Hey, SquirrelX has about eight gazillion readers, right?

According to the comments, the following people have moved from being freeloaders (yeah, I said it) and are now upstanding goldly Dlanders, or upgraded to Super Spiffy Gold:

Girlsdontcry
Leiascully
Windylady
Teralyne
Emiline220
Jessmess818 (Who promises to go gold on Friday)

Big thanks to Cruel-Irony and Dichroic, who have both offered to sponsor a gold membership. So you have no excuses. Go. To quote Cruel-Irony, ‘Save the words’. And it’s not like you’re not getting something out of it. Comments! Banner ads! Images! Statistics! Super secret membership stuff that we don’t talk about with non-gold members! Go! Hurry! Run!

I’m beginning to feel like National Public Radio. And now back to A Prairie Home Companion, where the women are strong, the men are good looking, and the children are look suspiciously a lot like Carl Krepsbach.

There is a tiny little dwarf with a pickaxe who has somehow gotten into my skull and he’s going at the gray matter like there are diamonds to be found within the wrinkles.

It’s migraine time again, kiddies. Oh happy day. I went home mid-morning yesterday, after fighting the burgeoning pain with caffeine and Advil liqui-gels and the Etoys song. Most music actually makes my headaches worse, but the Etoys song, with the ubiquitous humming of the crazy man going through a medley of songs made famous by muzak, it gives that white dull throb something to chew on. It’s like Ritalin music. I don’t even understand it. But even a heady dose of Oooooh Hooo Hooo couldn’t stay the migraine from its course and by 10:30, there were white spots of light and nausea and my face was a study in grayscale. Thus, I gave up, went home, piled up my down comforter into a comfortable nest, and broke open my new pack of Crayolas. Then spent half an hour sorting the colors into blues, purples, reds, orange and yellows, browns and other ucky colors, and the oddities (white, black, shadow, copper), because hi, I’m anal retentive. Then I sat there and colored graceful little arcs of pacific blue, manatee, and indigo until the vise loosened around my head. Then I drew the portrait of a mermaid with blue skin and then tragically gave her this magenta hair (ok, it wasn’t magenta, it was ‘mauvelous’. And now I want to die. Mauvelous. ) And then I drew a very lovely sign for the men using big Tonka trucks to tear up the road next to our house. I taped it in my dining room window, so they could look at it all day. It said ‘Love you!’ and there was a picture. Only instead of the word ‘love’, I used a different word. And I think what I drew broke the laws of some southern states.

And did you know that there’s a crayon called Beaver? I didn’t. But there is.

Things started getting better when around 6 pm, I realized that my nausea had slowly turned into a growling stomach, which was understandable, since I hadn’t eaten in over 24 hours. The prospect of food still was a little iffy, but the bland thin-crust pizza of a local deli sounded good, so I put on my darkest pair of sunglasses and made a quick jaunt out into the light. And called the construction workers a bunch of punk assed bitches, but then karma smote me with a blinding throb of pain. I tried to be clever and take a back route to the deli, but a large semi truck decided to pull out in front of me. Slllloowwwwllly. I honked on my horn five times, yelling inside my car ‘Would! You! Fuck! Ing! Go!’ He then punished me by making the next stop sign the Longest Stop Sign In All The World. Which I rightly deserved. I still hate him though. I shall color a picture of his truck falling over a cliff into a sea of dirty hypodermic needles and crack whore mermaids. And the color of his shirt will be mauvelous with horizontal stripes. The kind of horizontal stripes that aren’t flattering. And he will be wearing an asshat. A Beaver colored asshat.

Today, the migraine is still with us. It did not take a swan dive into my unconscious last night. I growled at Esteban when he came to bed and then blamed him for the fact that I had to pee.

I had more to write about but this little window is too bright.

The migraine does not need a prop.

And now a word from our sponsor

Things look a little different on this page today.

That’s because there might come a time when there isn’t a Diaryland. Diaryland is currently a free site, which is way cool because that means you can try out this online journaling thing and not have to deal with using FTP or knowing PURL or having a server taking up space in your bedroom. You don’t need to know what your IP address is or worry about bandwidth. Andrew sucks all of that up himself. Honestly, I don’t often wonder if he’s not going for the first Canadian nominated for sainthood, because I’m pretty sure that Diaryland has changed lives. Every day, it’s out there inspiring people, making people talk, making them listen. Making them think. Making them read and write and laugh and making people learn how to do some basic html, even if it is so that they know how to write a link like the ones above.

If Diaryland hadn’t been free and easy, I can guarantee you that you wouldn’t know me. You wouldn’t know Esteban or my goofycat or have to read my occasional introspective entries. My uterus would never have said a word. A world without a Diaryland is a sad place. That would mean no Uncle Bob, no Perceptions, no fun little buddy lists and lovely cool comments section talking about the grade of beef used at Taco Bell.

So this is to anyone who has a diary on Diaryland. Think about how much coolness Diaryland has given you in your life and think about this: could you have gotten this much fun out of anything else that was absolutely free? If so, isn’t it worth being a Gold member or if you’re a gold member, becoming a Supergold member? Gold members pay about $31 for an entire year of fun stuff like stats and pictures and the random entry thingy. And if you go Supergold, you can host even more images and get a comments section.

If you’re not sure, try it out for three months. It’s way cheap. And it will be an easy way to give back to the community that you’re enjoying right now. Besides, pictures! Statistics! How else are you going to find out that someone found your page by searching Google for ‘Haley Joel Underpants’

I think the world just shuddered.

So that’s my pitch today, because I want to make sure that there’s a Diaryland around for a long time. And you know me’ hippy kids can never resist turning into an activist. So if you sign up for a Gold or SuperGold, write to me and I’ll put a link to your site on the page, so that you can try out your sparkly new statistics. And Cruel-Irony has even graciously agreed to buy one person a year’s gold membership, so really there are no excuses. So go. Sign up. Or if you don’t have a Diaryland site, you can donate to the cause here. And then I’ll bring back the Chubby Tink and the older pages and the back and the forth and the rest of the entries.

Don’t make me bring out Jerry Lewis. Because you know I’ll do it.

Odor eaters

If there is one bit of wisdom that I can impart about aging, it is this:

People don’t change as they age, they simply become more themselves.

It’s like a personality slowly condenses, like water evaporating from a boiling pot. Or, in the case of some people, milk slowly curdling. Quirks (or faults) that were mildly present at age 21 become the main event by 31. Perhaps they drop the artifice they were hiding behind. Perhaps they just stop caring. For instance, you can almost plot the course from angst to curmudgeon to bitter old asshole. Or, conversely, from giggly to ditzy to taking too many anti-depressants.

Of course, when I’m talking about myself, I use the term ‘becoming more comfortable in my skin’ or something that makes it sound like some miraculous transformation rather than the more colloquial ‘turning into a fruit loop’.

But regardless, once the cement of self has been set, there seems to be no turning back.

For instance, feet. You know how much I dislike feet. I used to just be grossed out by certain feet. Boy feet, for instance, of the type that paraded around in smelly tube socks and ancient Chuck Taylors. Then somewhere in my late teens to early twenties, I developed an actual aversion to any adult feet with the exception of girl feet that are obviously well-tended. Esteban’s feet horrified me, but I could still, for instance, wear his clean socks in an emergency. I didn’t go apoplectic if he touched me with his bare feet (unless his Toenails of Death drew long bloody furrows into my ankles). Now, however, I am squicked by even the nicest of feet. I don’t want to touch them. I don’t want to see them. In fact, my own feet gross me out if they are not right out of the shower. I started to hyperventilate while getting a pedicure at the sight of the feet of the woman in the chair next to me and the fact that they were shaving off foot skin and it was flying EVERYWHERE and then I had to walk on little paper sandal things that were hardly santitary across this minefield of discarded foot flesh. Actually, that is probably understandable, but in the pool the other day, Ward’s feet came within three feet of my face and I actually paddled the floatie away as though I were being pursued by a questionable Baby Ruth-esque brown log. And he’d been in the pool for several hours, so they were obviously clean feet. There’s no rationalizing with my brain. It just prefers that people keep their feet in their shoes, thank you very much.

Also, it really bugs me if the toilet paper comes over the top of the roll rather than from below. I can deal with it in public restrooms and the like, but in my own house? Under the roll. However, Esteban is an Over The Roll kind of guy.

I didn’t learn this until recently because for the first seven years of our cohabitation, he never actually replaced a roll of toilet paper. I made him promise to do it, in return for only buying Northern Quilted which is something he feels quite strongly about (I actually prefer Charmin because it reminds me of my great grandmother, but whatever). So’ now there the toilet paper is replaced, unless he’s feeling really lazy and leaves the mysterious four squares on the cardboard tube.

Note to singletons and young couples: You know that rule about ‘Don’t Sweat The Little Stuff’ that Dear Abby used to go on about? Let me tell you something’ the Big Stuff probably got sorted out by the time that you move in together. The Little Stuff is all that is left. The divorce rate would be much lower if people practiced a little more bathroom diplomacy. Thus ends Relationships According To Bix.

I suspect that he doesn’t consciously thinks about which way the toilet roll should hang, but it must be habit from his days with Ward and June. And one day I told him how much it bugs me and he promised to do it the correct and proper way from then on. And then he promptly didn’t. So then I offered some auxiliary marital acts in exchange for his willing participation in my psychosis. And we’ve since had 99% compliance.

Last week, we hit the 1%. Unfortunately, it coincided with my recent purchase of a pack of Triple Roll Northern. It shouldn’t bother me. It really shouldn’t. But each time I’m in there, the roll mocking me, the end hanging somewhere behind the roll, hard to grasp, clinging to itself. Each time, I write a treatise in my head, to explain to the world why the toilet paper coming from underneath the roll is the proper way to hang it. Because gravity works with you. Because it just looks nicer. Because I like it that way.

You know, maybe I feel so strongly about it because it was actually the first thing on which I developed an opinion. I remember having a discussion with my mother when I was three about why people hung the toilet paper differently, and then ended the conversation ‘I think I like it hanging against the wall.’ And there it was. The birth of a toilet paper diva.

Thus, all weekend, I’ve been fighting with myself to not switch the roll around. Because that’s just giving into the obsession. However, a triple roll, by its very nature, lasts almost as long as Christina Aguilera’s career. I find myself using extraneous amounts of toilet paper. For everything. I used toilet paper to take off my makeup. I used toilet paper to clean the faucet. I even tore off a square to use as a bookmark in my latest bathroom read (The Bad Girl’s Guide to Getting What You Want, which comes with a handy waterproof cover, as though it were destined for bathroom reading). I stopped just short of sentencing Esteban to use up improperly rolled toilet paper on his numerous trips to the bathroom by making chili with extra beans.

And I just don’t know what to make of these growing compulsions. Do I have full blown OCD to look forward to in my aging years? Will someone use this entry as a resource for their psychological profile when I am committed? Will I someday get arrested when I ram some guy throwing his cigarette butt out the window of his car, like the entire world was his damn ashtray? Will my other little quirks wrap themselves as indelibly into my personality until I become that cat woman who talks to herself and has mazes of twenty-year-old magazines in her house? It boggles the mind.

But today’ There’s a nice lovely fresh roll hanging in the bathroom. Hung by myself. The right way.

Today is a beautiful day.

The Bar Which Shall Not Be Named

Hi. I’m the Bad Bar. I smell like the men’s bathroom but after four drinks, you won’t care. My floors are mysteriously always sticky. Everything glows here. Because it’s magic. And I want you. To want. Me.

Hi, I’m a skinny blonde bitch who has overly processed hair and wears black tank tops. I tan every day of my life. I have wrinkles and leathery skin. Hi. I’m twenty three. How are you? Can I just claim your barstool, because I’m skinny and blonde and tan and so obviously more deserving than you? Hi, oh, is that your purse? Yeah, I’m not sorry. You’re ugly and I? Am a waitress with three kids from different daddies, but I still find time for what’s important, you know? Like partying.

Hi. If my husband goes out drinking, we won’t be having sex for days, so he chooses to not go out. So we’ll just go home instead and watch Touched By An Angel and be smug.

Hi. I’m almost fifty years old and my shirt has the top six buttons undone, exposing my hairy barrel chest. Care to dance, baby?

Hi. I’m the Bald Bartender. Another Malibu and Diet? No, no, crazy dancing chubby girl with the big hooters, this one’s on me. Again. Here’ it’s in a pink glass. For you, Tinkerbelle girl, for you.

Hi, we’re Eric and Scotty Boom Boom and Jason and we’re proud members of the Weet’s Boy Harem even though we get nothing sexual out of it. She lets us buy her drinks, though!

Hi, I’m Scotty Boom Boom and that’s not entirely true, because she’s shown me her cleave. Yeah. That’s right. Bring it on, baby.

Hi, I’m Cheri’s camera. I take freaky blurred pictures of certain people, just like on The Ring and now you’re all probably going to die.

Hi. Whoooooo! Whoooooooo!!! Whoooooo!!!

Hi, we’re Pixy Sticks. We’re more addictive than crack. At least we don’t turn your neck colors like the candy necklaces. Snort us like cocaine! It’s fun! Wheee! Candy!

Hi. I’m Mo. I like to rub myself up against my sister until she gags. I think it’s funny. Oh, wait, I have to go now and stop her from beating up the skinny blonde bitches.

Hi, I’m Outside. It’s nice and cool out here. And there’s a porn shop up the street. Yeah. Outside is where it’s at.

Hi. I should probably wear deodorant. But I don’t.

Hi. I’m Markus. Holy shit, Mo just flashed me. My entire trip is now complete. Flashed! I got flashed! You have four eyes, but all of them are blue. Yes, I have been doing shots, how did you know? Gonna lay down now on this bench. Flashed! Heeee!

Hi. Your shirt is very nice. Almost as nice as mine. No, nicer, because it contains your lovely boobies. And yes, I just complimented your boobies in front of your husband. If you notice me limping later, it might be due to my enormous set of balls.

Hi. I like big butts. I cannot lie.

Hi. I’m the Lesser Pole of Support. Once upon a time, there was a boy who did some dirty dancing against me. He said he’d call, but he doesn’t. They never call. Now and then I see him across the bar, but he doesn’t even look my way. And now he’s kissing that blonde as if I mean nothing to him. NOTHING. Men are all pigs.

Hi. I’ve got a mullet and a truck with fourteen different Calvin Peeing stickers on them. I think Jeff Gordon is gay and it makes me want to punch him for proving that Nascar isn’t comprised of only mouthbreathing conformists. Another Bud Light please.

Hi, I’m Joel. I called Weet ‘babe’ at the restaurant. Why she can call everyone ‘Baby’ here, but I can’t call her ‘babe’ at the restaurant? Girls are weird.

Hi. I’m Boone’s Farm cheapass wine. You’re very pretty. Marry me?

Hi. I’m The Lion Sleeps Tonight. I’ve been played three times since you got here. A weema woppa weema woppa. I beat up Play That Funky Music White Boy so that I could go up a fourth time too. Nothing makes me happier than a bunch of drunk men singing falsetto and thinking they’re very talented. A weema woppa weema woppa.

Hi, I’m Nancy the cute bartender with the black wig and kick ass boots. Even though you’re a girl and I am completely heterosexual, I am strangely drawn to you and must give you free drinks. You want ten shots? Ok. I’ll charge you for five.

Hi, I’m Esteban and no, I won’t admit that the Bad Bar is fun. My wife has received drinks on the house for the last three hours. They’ve charged me for every damn drink I order. A less comfortable man would probably be upset by that.

Hi, it’s me again. I forgot to tell you’. Woooooooo! Wooooooooo! Woooooooooo!!!!

That’s on Lucifer’s resume too.

There are some days when I wish that I smoked cigarettes. Because the level of scorn I have is simply not complete without the prop of a smoking cancer stick that I could use to jab into the air as I made my misanthropic speeches about my job.

Yeah. It’s my job again. What a stress baby. Actually my job apparently took fertility pills so that it didn’t have just one stress baby. No. It has septuplet stress babies and is on the cover of Newsweek with chipped front teeth, begging for charity Pampers. I think my eyebrows have fused together in the middle of my forehead. My stress crevice wrinkle has become a faultline and I fear the tectonic plates may shift and move and my ear will be where my nose should be.

(There was a big tirade about my job and specifics that I realized probably totally broke the confidentiality agreement that I signed at some point, so I deleted it, but it was funny. Really. Very possibly the funniest thing I ever wrote. You snooze, you lose. Ok, it wasn’t really that funny. I’m just trying to make you feel bad. Because I’m cranky.)

When I was driving around for lunch today, I was thinking about how I wish I were a stay-at-home mom. Except that I don’t have children. Well, I do have one, but honestly, I wouldn’t have much to do while he’s at work. And then I stopped at the mall to see if they had another pair of DKNY sunglasses on sale (they didn’t) and then got all giddy when the muzak played Debbie Gibson’s ‘Out of the Blue’. Such a peppy song, that. The late 80’s were such a carefree time. You just had to perm your hair and then maybe spray it with Sun-In or something (which I did exactly once, and you know you did too, so don’t be giving me those looks) and then wear a Scrunchy that matched your socks, which were pulled up over your pegged pants. Or rather, one of the layers of your socks. I’m not sure what we were going for there. I almost think that maybe we were showing our financial superiority, in that we had so many coordinating articles of clothing that we had to wear many of them AT THE SAME TIME. I seem to remember friends doing that with Polo shirts too. In retrospect, it reminds me of those tribes that put the rings around women’s necks. People can convince themselves that anything is a good idea. Evidence the fact that Taco Bell continually charges various prices for the same seven ingredients in varying combinations.

And then I almost had a breakdown when the muzak started playing ‘Wildfire’. You know, the song about the horse? Dude, that was like my FAVORITE song in 1980. I used to request it at rollerskating all the time. I was nine and I had owned my own horse. Don’t judge me.

So, you know how the heroine of the song died? In a killing frost? Do you know what a killing frost is? It’s the first time in autumn that it gets cold enough to kill your flowers. That’s it. Like’ thirty degrees maybe. Michael Martin Murphey makes it sound like she’s battling these arctic winds and has tears freezing to her cheeks as she bravely rides on into the Nebraska’ I don’t know’ moors? Do they have moors there? Anyway, bah. It was just a bit nippy. But then suddenly there was a blizzard. So it wasn’t a killing frost? Which was it, Michael Martin Murphey? Make up your damn mind. And if the horse and then the girl were dumb enough to go running out in the blizzard, then it sounds like Darwinism in practice, non?

See, this is where I would take a deep drag of the cigarette, fix my eye upon him with deep contempt and then exhale dramatically.

Except I wouldn’t. Because smoking is bad, kids. Don’t smoke. It’s smelly and stinky and gives you skanky teeth. I’m just ruined in the head because every strong woman in my family smokes and has always smoked and being cranky just doesn’t seem right without a little nicotine buzz.

I had somewhere to go with this. I swear I did.

Gah.

Patsy Cline called me an angel in an email today.

Pay no attention to that woman behind the curtain.

America’s Next Top Caffeine Addict

You know, that America’s Next Top Model show sucked me right in. It was not as sexy as The Mole last year, with silver fox Anderson Cooper (who might make me start watching CNN again, just so I can drool over his little sardonic smirks and cerulean blue eyes), but even so, I was completely fascinated. Perhaps because I still harbor the assumption that the beautiful people have it much easier. And according to this show, they don’t. They have to have the hair pulled out of their crotches. They have to walk around. They have to go to Paris. PARIS! And they cry. They cry and it is dramatic and their mascara runs. Poor wittle models. Or modems, as Robyn mysteriously called herself at one point. Ok, so it wasn’t entirely easy. They did have to endure the spector that is Janice Dickensen, who answers the question ‘What if the Joker and Phyllis Diller had a child?’ They had to listen to Tyra Banks, with her two thousand inch forehead, say ‘Congratulations, you are still in the running to become America’s Next Top Model’ every time Kimora Simmons (she of the bullfrog neck) pulled the string in Tyra’s back, to which Janice would respond that she was the FIRST EVER Supermodel. The First. Janice. Whose eyebrows meet in the back of her head.

Esteban, who had purposely stayed at work until 9 so that he’d not have to sit through the show and then I unveiled the fact that I specifically waited until after 9 so that I could watch the episode on the Tivo sans commercials ( Aha! Foiled by Ricky Fitts!), immediately got sucked in as well when he learned that we’d find out the winner at the end of the show. He had the audacity to compliment Shannon, the uber-blonde big-teethed spawn of Christy Brinkley.

‘She has a nice voice. Sort of like Demi Moore.’

‘Aah’ how could you? She’s got big teeth.

‘So?’

‘And a rictus grin. Like a ventriloquist dummy. And no figure. At all. She’s not very good. In fact&AO8AvwC9AO8AvwC9-

‘What does that have to do with liking her voice?’

I was a bit embarrassed at my own self. Once girls have decided that we’re supporting one girl (or two, in this case), it would show disloyalty to make all but the most grudging concessions toward their competitors in private. Oh, in public, we’ll tell the interloper that she’s pretty, that she looks really good in that dress, that we love her shoes and where did she get them, but in private? Out comes the machete, baby, there will be no mercy. Women are wolverines and I doubt that we even realize it sometimes. We will defend our tribe to the death but anyone else? We’ll set our sites on their fatal flaw and then lock and load, baby, because things are going to get ugly.

And maybe that’s the big gender difference right there. Men will get into a fist fight but be laughing through their bloody noses and buy each other a beer. Men can stay friends even after their best friend sleeps with their wife. Women? Hell hath no fury like a woman who has been called a heifer behind her back.

Gender roles are interesting. Little girls and little boys play differently in same sex groups. Little boys have games which are all about establishing a pecking order. There’s a reason that dodge ball is not a favorite at Girl Scout Camp. Girls are uncomfortable with anything that puts one girl above another. In fact, adult women don’t even want to take credit for successfully raising children, modestly claiming that their tribe deserves all of the glory.

So yeah, I was sitting there sniffling like some pansy when lock-jawed rocker grrl Adrienne won over the Skipper Grows Up doll. I think Esteban got a little teary as well, but he started fumbling with his back scratcher as a distraction.

‘What are you doing?’ I asked, as he twirled it around like a baton.

‘Playing with the back scratcher.’

‘Are you pretending that it’s a sword?’

‘No’ I’m just spinning it.’

‘Like’ a baton!?!?’ I snarked, preparing the stage to make a majorette slam.

‘No’. Ok, ok, it’s a PENIS. Ok? Are you satisfied, Dr. Freud? Huh?’

I probably think about things too much. No wonder men think girls are insane.

I’m a bit distraught however with how to spend my few hours of television watching time. There’s no Buffy, no ANTM. I can almost recite every episode of Friends and I just can’t bear another season of Big Brother. I might actually have to read or something.

For those of you who are playing the Dumber Than A Box Of Rocks home version, my No Sugar/No Flour thing isn’t going so well. I’m working uber long hours this week and I totally overslept yesterday, waking up less than an hour before I needed to be sitting at my desk. Thus, I got a full-blown Mocha for breakfast. I know. Sugar. Chocolate. Bad. The whole thing threw me into a carb spiral for the rest of the day and all I could think about were Reeses’ Peanut Butter Cups. This morning, I swore that I was going to get up with my alarm, which I did, but then I relocated to the living room sofa where I rested my eyes for an hour and a half. And had a Diet Coke on the way to work. And it was like sinking into the arms of a former lover. A lover who gave you the best wake-up kisses in the world that made you curl your toes. A lover who knows just the right… ah… yes… ohh… oh yeah…. mmmmmm.

Diets are so damned hard. But tomorrow? I think I’m going to envision Janice Dickensen screaming at me ‘You have a bulbous ass! You’re not going to make it in this business. You might as well get a job in a factory!’ and thus I shall refrain from the heady siren that is caffeine.

Maybe.

Unless I oversleep again.

Or am groggy. Or thirsty. Or’ something.

I’m such a fucking pansy.
