Ain’t San Francisco if you ain’t got the ‘sone

I’m not dead.

Yet.

So I drove down to Milwaukee on Monday in preparation for my flight out at some godforsaken time on Tuesday morning. I was all weird and weepy, since I was playing the martyr role, the strong yet tragic heroine bravely going forward despite her impending death. The entire maudlin mindset was exacerbated when at one point the only radio station I could get in played a demented set including the death songs from Armageddon, Daredevil, and Pearl Harbor. Apparently it was a Audio Daily Double and the question was ‘What are schmoopy songs from seminal Ben Affleck movies?’

Oh heee, my mind just said in a Sean Connery accent ‘I’ll take ‘The Rapists’ for 400, Trebek.’

Had one of the worst moments of my adult life when I had to put in a wake up call for 3:30. In the morning. I mean, I’ve been OUT that late before. No human should have to wake up that early.

Then I scurried to my very favorite Mayfair mall where I frolicked at Torrid and then exercised my charge it muscle at the Prescriptives counter with the lovely Ginger Lee and the adorable girl whose name has left my poor beleaguered brain. Ginger also gave me an impromptu brow reshape, which made me want to marry her and have her babies. I adore it when people are just as compulsive about my eyebrows as I am. Because that means they care. I gave them each a cherry blow pop because somehow that made sense, you pluck my eyebrows and I give you candy.

Back to the hotel and managed to fall asleep for what had to be about seven minutes before my wake up call. On the shuttle, the hottie chose to sit next to me. How are YOU doin’, Mister Hottie? But then, my eyes were hardly open, he might very well have been a drooling troglodyte and I wouldn’t have known.

The flight was uber packed but I managed to be seated next to one of the very few empty seats. Yay! Although I sort of slept or watched the movie instead of using my laptop, my normal method of self-amusement during long flights. And God, seriously, the flight to the coast is long like a summer car trip in the back of a stationwagon with wood grain on the side. And the dog just farted. And Dad? He has had ENOUGH.

Which reminds me: In other news, I got an in-flight crush on a man who was traveling with his incredibly adorable children. He actually walked the entire way to California, pacing the three feet of the galley in full-on baby bounce mode. He was smiling the entire time. My crushes are inexplicable, as he looked like a young Colonel Sanders. I can’t help it. It was a pleasant way to pass the time, watching him with his baby. I decided that he was either an independent film maker or a writer, mostly because of his glasses and eccentric wisps of hair, like Beaker on the Muppets. I also decided that he was probably a vegetarian, but secretly really enjoyed a good Black Angus steak. And that he hyphenated his last name with his wife’s name but he probably was not willing to hyphenate in the bedroom. If you know what I mean. And if you don’t, I’m talking about his sexual practices. Because apparently this diary needs footnotes on some days.

Fuck.

That word has been tossed around quite a bit this week and it’s only Wednesday!

If Got to the hotel, but the room wasn’t ready, so strolled around Union Square, got a salad for lunch, browsed around some galleries, where they mistook me for an eccentric wealthy lady who lunches. It was a strange thing, as I often pretend that I must exude an air of snobbery when in a strange and pretentious place, but I highly doubt that I ever actually achieve that aura. Then, when I wasn’t really paying attention, when I looked rumpled and yet polished, mismatched and yet matched, one of the gallery guys schmoozed me, gave me his card, asked about my art collection, offered to give me a private showing of their new works, treated me like I perspired droplets that formed perfectly shaped pearls. I wish I could bottle that whatever it was. Because seriously, I couldn’t have done it again if I tried.

Finally, the room was available, so I pitched all of my luggage in the room and immediately took a nap. I was startled by the maid bringing me ice, and when I took it from her, I dropped it all over the floor and then stood there like an utter tool as she picked up the ice and then refilled the ice bucket again and put it away herself. I sacked out again. Finally, I woke at 6 or maybe 4, depending upon which of my clocks I look at, and realized that not only were my hives driving me crazy but I was definitely having a hard time breathing. I called my doctor’s answering service, hoping the doctor could just prescribe me some drugs or cream or something. Objects My doctor called back and recommended that I visit the emergency room as soon as possible. Grrrreat. I frightened the hotel staff (Jesse, lovely concierge, who has not only set up my wireless internet connection by which you and I are communicating, but also given me several tips for various stores and locations) but they managed to find the nearest emergency room and put me in the town car with concerned looks upon their faces. So I found myself in the most disgusting and overused emergency room I have ever witnessed, although honestly, I’ve only ever visited Wisconsin emergency rooms and only in moderately sized cities, so perhaps I am underexposed to the horrors of US urban medical care facilities. But still. Gross. My cellphone rang no fewer than 5 times while I was in the emergency room, which, according to the staff, was fine. I found that suspect, honestly. I’m beginning to think that I wasn’t in a real hospital, but perhaps a movie set, specifically because the main players were all gorgeous and Harold, who gave me my breathing treatment, was straight from central casting. There were even some rather dramatic screams coming from elsewhere in the hospital. I have never been in a hospital and heard screams, particularly from two different sources. A very hot doctor checked me out. No. I mean, he checked out my very sexy hives ( oh yes, my hives are simply dripping with sex appeal) and listened to my lungs AND unhooked my bra. No. Really. He did. But probably not one-handed. And he did not resemble Colonel Sanders either. I was lobbying for the anti-histamine shot, which is the best shot you can ever get and I would like to have that shot on a GOOD day. He did, however, prescribe a breathing treatment right away, another inhaler, some miscellaneous pills handed to me in a little paper cup, and massive doses of Prednisone. Two of the three pills were benadryl and prednisone, one of which makes you sleepy and the other makes you stay awake. It was like a Don King sponsored pharmaceutical fight going on in my system. The Beatin’ in the Weetin’ or something. He also prescribed an epi-pen, feeling that I was having a rather unusual allergic reaction and I also have a history of reactions to bee stings which have been gaining in severity. Wow. I am just one big tragedy waiting to happen. I now must carry a totem against impending doom. Is it any wonder that I feel like I’m about to die? No. I think not. I took a cab back to my hotel, having told the town car that I would be fine and wasn’t sure how long it would take in the emergency room. I tried to fill my prescription but the Walgreens was closed and I wasn’t in the mood to seek out a 24 hour pharmacy. I went back up to my room and ordered room service so that I could watch America’s Next Top Model.

And that’s when the peppy kicked in.

Prednisone: the official sponsor of all of my trips to San Francisco. Yes, if you’ll remember, I was on this lovely steroid the last time I was here, which was responsible for two of three specatularly poor nights of sleep. And I took a big dose at 8 pm. Life was not looking so good. Then my lovely friend who will go by the pseudonym Patsy Cline, despite the fact that he is a boy, called and asked if I wanted company. Then while I was waiting for Patsy Cline, Mopie called and asked if I wanted to come down to a dive and drink with them. Who was I to refuse the beguiling nature of Ms. Pie? Patsy and I took a cab to the Haight. There we hooked up with Jenfu, Mopie, and Jen Wade, where we admired La Wade’s lovely chest, I pissed off the bartender, La Wade wisely fled our collective presence and then we took pictures of all of our cleavage. And I think there’s a picture of my face pressed into Mopie’s chest. Which I do not believe is in my possession. Yes. It was the ‘sone. I blame the ‘sone. I think there’s also a picture of me making devil fingers. I believe also not in my possession. Mopie and Jenfu came away unscathed, of course, because they are photogenic like supermodels of journaling. Digital cameras love them. Digital cameras make me look a) tired b) speckly c)in possession of 42 chins or d) like the singerslashactor Meatloaf. And, from what certain people tell me, different in every single picture.

Then Mopie drove me home in the Watermelon!!! And it does smell like watermelon!! That is so cool that it required more than the normal allotment of exclamation points.

Then I went up to my room and laid in bed listening to the people on the street argue about hooker prices until finally I fired up my laptop, sent out some emails, and then fired up a bunch of mp3s and drifted off around 3 am, which was about 26 hours after I woke up, if you account for the time change and don’t count the nap.

Do not laugh at the powers of the ‘sone. The ‘sone is not your friend. The ‘sone borrows all of your favorite CDs and then months later, says ‘What? Those were mine, dude, you must have lost yours.’ The ‘sone orders expensive appetizers and bottles of wine at dinner and then says ‘Why don’t we just split the check in half, it’s easier that way’ as you look forlornly at your dinner salad and glass of water. The ‘sone borrowed your bathing suit and then you got crabs the next time you wore it. The ‘sone laughed at you and said ‘Crabs! Dude! Crabs, that is so nasty! Eeeuw. Crabs!’ The ‘sone demotes you to be wingman when it hits on the hotties who have friends who might very possibly be circus freaks. The ‘sone talks during movies. The ‘sone secretly slept with your date after prom. The ‘sone is not your friend.

So that was Tuesday and now it is Wednesday evening at 11 pm and the hookers are giggling outside my window and I have had even more adventures today but that will have to wait. Unless I die. Then no soup for you. Because apparently I couldn’t break my rhythm of including at least one Seinfeld reference in the entry, even though I never really watched the show. Life is a mystery and I am a mediocre writer. Now to sleep. And curse the ‘sone.

Jen

So long, farewell, auf wiedersehn goodbye

Look at me, I’m all bloggy or something, but this just cracked me up. I think it is proof that if you repeat the word ‘pork’ enough times, it becomes prime comedy.

Seriously. Pork. I crack myself up now. It’s almost (but not quite better) than the word poop. I think it’s because the word ‘pork’ doesn’t sound like something that should be eaten. It sounds more like a verb. Or it should describe the feeling when you come up from underwater and you have tons of pool water in your nose and you make that sound trying to get it out, but you can already taste it in the back of your throat. That’s pork. Right there.

All roads lead to pork. It kills me. It truly does. Sometimes I think I’m broken.

So I have this crazy feeling that I will be dying in the next couple of days. I don’t know why. I acknowledge that it is ridiculous, but everything has this weird finality to it. My sister called for no reason, thus I will die. Someone said ‘see you again some day’ instead of ‘see you later” so thus that means I’m going to die. My credit cards have no balances on them, thus I am worm food. The cat was being nice to me this morning because animals sense these things. My laundry is all done, so my family will undoubtedly have ample choices in which to dress me. (Make sure I’m wearing a Dayam!Bra, sis. No drooping corpse boobs for me.)

I’ve only had that feeling three times before in my life. Once before I left for college when I was eighteen, once before I left for England and now. It’s probably big trips that do it, although my college was only 90 miles away from Green Bay. I also had decided that Esteban was going to die two years ago when he went to Germany and Holland for some foreign computery thing. Gah. Must find my travel rune. Someone gave it to me when I went to England and it made me feel better. I have no idea where it is though. Hence, I will likely die.

Esteban was talking about someone we both detest the other day and he said ‘You know, I was thinking, if you died, when they come up to hug me at your funeral? I’m going to say ‘You know, Weetabix really loathed you’ because I think the look on their face would be the only thing that would give me some joy right then.’

We both agreed that it was a horrible thing and we were both horrible people but I made him promise that if I did indeed die, he should do exactly that. Because that would be gold, Jerry, gold.

This is just a reminder, sweetie. And don’t forget to feed the cat.

Now must go back to packing or I will be traipsing around SF in Birkenstocks, cargo shorts and a t-shirt all weekend. There are a plethora of entries down at the bottom of this screen if you’re a Monday through Friday reader, so mosey on down. And Mo and Jen? I hope I don’t die before we have our karaoke fiesta and replicate the Charlie’s Angels pose. Mwah.

Toastmaster

(Scene: Esteban and Weetabix are spooning in bed.)

Esteban: (snakes his hand under Weet’s t-shirt and goes for the fun pillows)

Weetabix: HEY! BACK OFF!

Esteban: What?

Weetabix: Do NOT touch. No touch.

Esteban: What? What did I do? Did accidentally hurt you?

Weetabix: No, no, no, it’s just one of those things. Most of the time, I don’t care, but some days, some days’everything is very sensitive for some reason.

Esteban: It’s not’ that time is it?

Weetabix: No, no, it has nothing to do with that. Just some times, the nips just don’t want anything to do with anyone. It’s like, some days? My nipples are at eleven.

Esteban: Your nipples have gone Spinal Tap?

Weetabix: Well, I was going to say ‘everything’s been kicked up a notch’ but that was too’ Emeril.

Esteban: Yeah, good save then with the Spinal Tap.

Weetabix: Thank you. I feel you can almost never go wrong with a well chosen Christopher Guest quote.

Esteban: So I can’t touch you, you’re saying, because they’re at eleven?

Weetabix: You know, it’s not even you. I was drinking from my water bottle before and the cap brushed against a nip and I actually got pissed off at my own self. I pissed myself off. Which is just weird, because most times? Nipple touching is a good thing, especially when you do it. It’s like’ better than toast.

Esteban: Toast.

Weetabix: I’m just saying.

Esteban: Toast?!

Weetabix: What?

Esteban: Ahem’. TOAST!?

Weetabix: I like toast.

Esteban: Singed bread? I’m better than singed fucking bread?

Weetabix: Toast is good. It’s a good thing. Toast makes me happy.

Esteban: I’m so glad that I rate above bread.

Weetabix: Not bread’ toast. There’s a difference.

Esteban: God, this is proof, right here that the honeymoon is over. Because now? I’m on a scale with toast. Breakfast food. Is it like, Toast’ Me’ then Peanut Butter Cap’n Crunch?

Weetabix: I think toast makes me happier than Cap’n Crunch.

Esteban: Toast. I can’t believe it has come to this. Toast.

Weetabix: But’ I really really love toast.

Esteban: It’s bread. Almost burnt bread.

Weetabix: You know, if I would have said ‘You touching the nips is better than chocolate’, you wouldn’t have had a problem with that. But because it’s toast, suddenly I’m condescending?

Esteban: Because that’s chocolate. That’s something that gives you a high.

Weetabix: Toast makes me happy.

Esteban: Maybe that could be my new catch phrase. Like if something’s really good, we could say ‘Yeah, that’s just toast!’

Weetabix: I could have said It’s better than shopping.

Esteban: Well then I would have known that you were lying.

Weetabix: Oh, well… let’s just stick with toast.

Esteban: So it’s toast, then me then shopping.

Weetabix: This isn’t about YOU, it’s about you touching my nips. Totally different. You as a whole are WAY above shopping and toast.

Esteban: What if one morning I wake you up and I have toast on my crotch?

Weetabix: Ok, now you’re just corrupting my pure toast love.

Esteban: Never mind…butter, crumbs in bed, it’s all very messy. So, right now, though, your boobies are untouchable.

Weetabix: Well, the nipples are. They are a no fly zone.

Esteban: But there are other…airports?

Weetabix: Um… maybe.

Esteban: That’s way toast!

Weetabix: Catch phrase?

Esteban: Yeah.

Weetabix: Toast.

Esteban:Toast.

Weird moment just now: Esteban has hurt his ankle. It is somehow related to typing on his computer, but don’t even ask how that all works. He is spending the Saturday afternoon watching manly movies on the various cable networks’ Anti Chick-Flick Weekend (and really, by rights shouldn’t they be called Dick Flicks? If I have to go through life being insulted by the fact that the world feels that by the simple virtue of my gender that I enjoy movies like Beaches, the Divine Secrets of the Message In A Bottle That I Know Is One True Thing and any movie that combines Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks’ ok, maybe I do like the Hanks/Ryan combos but still…then we should have a label so that if you’ve got a penis, you must like Clint Eastwood and Ernest Borgnine and lots of guns and generals and Jackie Chan). So essentially, I’m listening to a bunch of war sounds and then some grizzly, cigar-fueled macho voice telling the troops that they’ve got to go on to fight for freedom, then the channel flips to the swishiest sounding male tenor in the world singing an aria.

Wait for it’ wait for it’ wait for it’ then he switches back to the war.

What was up with that? Was that the ying to the yang of all of that heavy artillery? Was it like an emergency eppy of estrogen to the heart after an overdose of testosterone?

And I’ll bet if I asked him about it right now, he’ll deny it.

Seriously, there are some days I feel exactly like Jane Goodall.

Ala Peanut Butter and Banana sandwiches

The Be Weetabix For A Day entries have been posted and this is the real schlameal (as opposed to the very artificial schlamozzle) once more. I think each of the four Faux Weet’s did a fabulous job and all of them made me laugh. You can vote (by saying ‘I vote for this one’ and if you want you can explain why) for your favorite in the appropriate comments section on each entry (and if you try to vote twice, believe me, I can so tell). I’m like that guy at the Miss America pageant saying ‘you’re all winners’ to me.’ I applaud each of them for putting themselves on the block while I stood back and said in a British accent while sipping Taster’s Choice ‘We’ve switched the diary these readers normally peruse at the prestigious Diaryland with entries from other writers. Let’s see if they notice, shall we?’

I still don’t know what I should give away as a prize though. Suggestions are welcome in the this here comments section.

So the weekend.

It is expected that on one’s birthday, one bring a treat to work, and since I was working half a day on Friday, I was thus obliged to feed the masses.

I was thinking about my childhood. I never got to do the birthday thing at school since my birthday was always during summer vacation. I’m still bitter that I never got to wear the white birthday Minnie Mouse ears in Kindergarten. On the last day of school, the teacher allowed the six kids who had summer birthdays to take turns wearing the black Mickey or white Minnie ears. There were more girls than boys, so when it was just me and this other girl who had been a poseur and had told the teacher that it was her birthday in JANUARY so that she was birthday girl for a day, but then it was later discovered that her birthday was actually in June and she had simply orchestrated this evil plot to gain all of the grandeur of being the Birthday Kid for a day (extra graham cracker, getting to hold the book during story time, and the much coveted Disney head gear). It was quite the scandal. I loathed her. But she was having a fit, demanding that she get to wear the white Minnie ears and thus I was expected to wear the Mickey ears. Instead of pointing out that this would be the second time she got to wear the white ears, I simply boycotted the entire fa’ade. Yes, I was a diva even then. Also I didn’t want to discover that the black ears carried with them the unexpected side effect of getting a surprise penis.

My, my, sometimes I don’t even intend to go places and suddenly, boom, I’m telling you about the white Minnie Mouse ear incident. You just never know what’s going to happen on Dumber Than A Box of Rocks. I obviously don’t.

Anyway, the point of that is that I never got to bring in the requisite treat for my birthday and on the very few occasions when I did get to bring in a treat, I always had the same answer whenever my mother asked what I wanted to bring.

‘Peanut butter and banana sandwiches!!!!’

My mother would sigh and do that little mom half-head-shake thing that moms do and I knew that it meant no, much like the words ‘we’ll see’ mean ‘I’m hoping you’ll forget’ and ‘maybe’ means ‘ummm’.no.’ She was nice about it, usually saying ‘You know, Weetabix Marieetabix, not everyone has as unique tastes as you do. Most people don’t understand peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Let’s think of something else.’ And then we’d go with whatever thing she suggested, something like carob brownies or trail mix or pineapple bran cupcakes (which were just bran muffins with pineapple tidbits and raisins in them, frosted with cream cheese frosting but they were very yummy.)

So I decided that since I didn’t have to clear it with my mom, it would be the makings for peanut butter and banana sandwiches, with the addition of some cherry jam in case she was right and the world simply does not appreciate the perfect symbiotic marriage of banana and peanut butter on European style fresh bread from the snooty bakery. My birthday treat was voted ‘Best Treat Ever’ by my department. Go Weetabix. It’s your birthday.

After a delightful lunch with Penny and Carissa at Red Lobster (in which we made the rather disturbing discovery that they have changed their delightful creamy ceasar dressing for something that is distinctly mayonnaisey, which is a food that I loathe with the fire of a thousand suns and I have redubbed their ceasar salad the Et Tu Brute salad. Or Shitzer, depending upon my mood.) I scurried off to the spa where I treated myself to a massage. This time, I opted for a different masseuse, a frail little flower of a girl who subsists on three saltine crackers per day. She insisted upon talking to me the entire time as she made fragile poking motions on my back, doing absolutely zero for my stress. At times, I suspect that her hands were hovering a fraction of an inch above my skin, making massage motions or perhaps interpretive dance. Apparently there are simply two schools of massage, the one where the body is treated as though it were fine china and the school of Pain Thumbs. As hard as it may be, next time I will make an appointment with Jayme and simply grit my teeth against the onslaught of torture, because after she was finished, I was as rigid as a bowl of Jell-o.

After the unmassage, I hooked up with Esteban and we made plans to run to Appleton to have dinner at my favorite barbeque place. But first, we opted to take a dip in the parent’s pool, as it was on our way. This would be the tragic flaw in logic. Once we were in the pool, Ward and June invited themselves along. Normally, this is not a big deal. I get along famously with my inlaws. They are delightful people. But then they didn’t want to go to Appleton. I explained that I really wanted to see Finding Nemo too, and they were up for that, but then they were upset. ‘It’s six thirty already! We don’t have time for the incredible journey of 20 minutes to go ALLTHEWAY to Appleton.’

People have a crazy mindset in Wisconsin. For instance, Green Bay is split in half by a river. There are people who live their entire lives never having gone across the river. There are people for whom the East Side is like a trip to France. I suspect that they worry about time changes and currency conversions. And even if you traverse the river a fair amount, there is a mindset that Across The River is far, while anything on This Side is near. It’s ridiculous, as Green Bay and the outlying areas is quite sprawling. It is possible to take twenty minutes to drive from one thing to another thing, even if it is on This Side Of The River. For instance, I had dropped off our dry cleaning near work on the West Side. When I explained that I needed to run Across Town to pick up our cleaning before I left for my trip next week, Esteban made a grimace as though we were on the Oregon Trail and I had just announced that I had forgot my loom in Boston. I mean, it was ten minutes on the freeway. Likewise, Appleton is about 30 miles away, about 20 from the suburb where Ward and June live, but because we go through farmland and see cows, this twenty minutes is monumental in their minds. 20 minutes. It takes 20 minutes for us to drive to their house. But there are no cows, which is apparently all the difference in the world.

So they balked on the Appleton thing and then they balked on the time. I hinted that they could just do dinner with us another time, but when they realized that they would simply not sway my decision, they grudgingly agreed to come along with us on The Great Journey. Then they balked because there were too many people at the barbecue place and it would mean that we’d have to see the 9:00 movie and THAT would mean we wouldn’t get home for two weeks or something. So I suggested we go to the 7:30 movie and then eat after that. They whined and then inhaled two vats of popcorn at the theatre. Then they didn’t want to go to dinner. Mickey fickey parents. Like I wanted to spend my birthday riding in the back of a minivan with my inlaws kvetching that they were going to need to get up early. Because I don’t remember insisting that they come along. Of course, now in my head, if it had just been Esteban and me by ourselves, we would have partied like rockstars and been heliported to a private party where we would dine upon salads made from stamens of rare orchids and then entertained by a midget reenactment of Boogie Nights. Instead, the high point was when June announced that Gen had come along to dinner with us because her ashes were in the back of the van. Because the evening wasn’t pleasant enough. Thank you. Happy Birthday to me.

You know, after I reread that story, I have obviously learned nothing in 27 years and the evening was really just a pair of white Minnie Mouse ears. Look at how that all worked out. Sometimes, it’s just a mystery.

However, one cool thing: when I got home, there was a package waiting for me from Groupie94, containing neato beauty products, including fun manicure stuff AND two of my beloved OPI nail polishes, one pretty gold one and a lovely red shade called something like ‘I’m Not Really A Waitress’. She knows me too well. Fun fun fun! Cannot wait to play with them! Thank you! Heeee!

Guest Entry: A Man’s work is never done

A late entry to the Be Weetabix For A Day contest…

Some of you may be wondering why I have stayed with Esteban despite all the charming offers from the Bad Bar boys. “But Weetabix,” you say, “what about all those hot drunk boys who put stickers in your cleavage? Wouldn’t it be romantic to run off with Spike your Vampire Boyfriend? Or maybe the Sbux Guy? Surely he wouldn’t subject you to the nightly trauma of a waterbed.” And while I have no doubt that running off with Spike (my Undead Boyfriend) would add a lot of drama to this humble diary (plus, slayer-type people undoubtedly have the hookup to kickass clothes), there is always this:

Esteban will take care of the Mouse Problem for me. Sure, it takes a little prodding, but after trying for weeks to tempt the damn things with live traps and failing, Esteban is the one who will set the Scary Mousetraps of Doom and take care of them when the mice fall for it and get their furry little necks caught. Gah. Pop-eyed little fuzzy things. It’s enough to give anyonenightmares. There are reasons that I’m a Curvy Sex Goddess and not a Mice Goddess or something. Creepy. Weetabix, Queen of the Mice, just doesn’t have the same ring as Weetabix, Catnip for Lesbians.

And besides that, who’s to say that the Sbux Guy could even keep me in coffee on the salaries those people make? Or understand my seasonal need for Diet Coke? Spike my Undead Boyfriend is a different story, but he’d probably go and sink his teeth into some skinny blond bitch and claim it was in the script or something. “Hey, babe, even the undead have to eat.” No, it’s better this way, even if I’ll have to do ginormous amounts of dishes when I return from San Francisco. Ah, my birthday present to me.

Guest Entry: Mouse Attack 2003

Final Entry in the Be Weetabix For A Day challenge…

Dear Diary:

Operation Takeover of the Humans’ Territory is a smashing success, thanks to the aid of the humans’ feline counterpart (code name Tilly) and another human (code name Golf Widow) who was kind enough to provide us with a computer (and appropriate accessories; see image at left) as well a link to this diary, which is a great source of amusement to us all, as the human who normally authors this journal has not only freely admitted her stark fear of us, but, in her folly, has also, in this entry, gone so far as to recommend bait for the homemade people trap we built in the basement!

Golf Widow thoughtfully sacrificed her credit card to the cause and we were able to stock the trap with the necessary shiny laptop and a complete DKNY plus-sized wardrobe. Also, on the advice of Tilly, we added two dozen dayam! bras in assorted colors, a pair of really kickass boots, and a gift certificate for a year’s supply of Starbucks coffee.

There has been a setback of sorts, in that Tilly is now insisting we may only trap the human temporarily, as she is Tilly’s only source of sustenance. We shall almost certainly be obligated to concede, as Tilly was looking at us quite hungrily when she said this, and if the human is not able to provide food for her, we may wind up feeding her by default … which would be most unsatisfactory, not to mention detrimental to our respective wellbeings. However, Tilly has been reasonable to date and we take her at her word that she will not consume us if the human gives her alternate nourishment; so the Great Operation will most likely be modified to allow for the release of the human within a day or so, or when Tilly’s mews of hunger become too piteous for us to bear, whichever comes first.

On the other hand, Golf Widow has requested nothing in return for her assistance except for a link back from this journal to her own.

She would accept no other suggestions from us. She claims that her breasts are already impressive, her hair already curly, and her laptop still shiny and mostly-new, although she’s had it for nearly a year now.

“I am an attention whore,” she said, “and I want the attention and adoration of the hundreds of Weetabix fans, even if only for one day.”

When pressed, she did admit that she wouldn’t mind a link back from Marn‘s journal as well, but she could live without it if absolutely necessary.

Thus it stands: We currently have control over the house and the diary, but will need to relinquish it shortly. We may also need to evacuate, as the cheese situation, for a home in the central portion of the nation, is rather pathetic.

Mouse Attack 2003 signing off.

Guest Entry: Nude Bras

Round two of Be Weetabix For A Day…

I had seen a circular in the paper Sunday announcing this huge underwear sale over at the mall. Buy two bras and/or pairs of underwear and get a pair free. By mail. Who can resist things in the mail? Especially if it’s new underwear, which I am sadly in need of anyway, thanks to Operation Hottie. I had forgotten that in losing all of this weight, and being able to wear smaller jeans (I don’t say the small jeans, mind you, just smaller) that I would also have to start shrinking the underwear. Otherwise the whole hottie look goes right out the window when you sit down, your shirt rides up a bit, your pants ride down a bit, and the next thing you know you go from having the hot young rockstar look, to having the old pillowy grandma look.

So, anyway yesterday after work, I head over to the mall. A quick stop into the Body Shop for some Papaya scented Body Butter and matching Scrub (it is never too soon to smell like summer) and it’s over to the bra sale.

At first I am so overwhelmed that I don’t even notice what I’m doing. Or rather, I’m thinking too much about what I’m doing to get a good look at the whole picture. Here I am, trying to find bras and underwear in my size. That match. That come with the lovely buy two get one free deal. That don’t come in crummy, yeast infection causing lycra. I have so much to think about. I pick up one set, find a flaw, put it back, pick up another. This goes on for quite some time. I find a set that I like. It’s doesn’t come in my size. I find a bra I like, in my size. No matching panties. What is a girl to do?

So, finally I narrow all of this down to five or six new sets. One olive green lacy set, one turquoise set with…. wait a minute. I’ve been so caught up in finding sets in my size, that match, that come with freebies, that don’t cause yeast infections, when I realize that I’ve over looked something. THE UNDERWEAR MUST MATCH THE CLOTHING.

I stand there in horror for a moment, realizing that I’ve managed to pull out colors that I have never even considered wearing. Then, I start to qualify. QUALIFY. I started thinking. Maybe. Maybe I could wear that… that… well, I’m not really sure what to call this color, but it reaches toward blue. I could wear it with blue jeans and a blue hoodie. Maybe. What color IS this thing?

And that’s when it happened. I’m staring down at the handful of lingerie that I’m holding. I’m thinking, maybe I can buy something in olive green to match the lacy one. And then I see it. The fine print on the back of the buy two get one free tag. OFFER GOOD ON NUDE COLORED UNDERWEAR ONLY! Nude! Nude underwear! No, no no no no no no! I can’t wear nude underwear, it would be like wearing no underwear at all, or wearing the underwear with nothing on top of it, because what else matches nude underwear but… nudity?!

See, this is what I’m talking about when I say that things must match. If I had broken down, and bought this underwear in it’s questionable colors, I would have failed to match, and worse than that, I would have had a drawer full of nude underwear at home.

Needless to say that this would have been a drawer that I never opened. But of course, I would have been unable to throw it out either, because it was free. And I would have bought all this other underwear just to get it. Gah!

I went to Hot Topic and bought some new Tinkerbell underwear after this. I felt that I deserved something like Tink after all of this. I didn’t even go to the Hootchie Mama store. I was too traumatized.

In fact, I’m still traumatized. I feel cheap and dirty and betrayed. I need a shower. Just writing about it has made me feel dirty all over again.

Guest Entry: Here Kitty, Kitty, Kitty!

The first of the Be Weetabix For A Day entries.

So, I get up for work this morning and brush the remnants of the Bad Bar from my skanky mouth. Ick…that is the worst thing about the Bad Bar, the tobacco-alcohol, morning-after, reminicent of a cess-pool after taste. Shear nastiness in the very essence of the word. Nasty.

Carissa, Penelope, and I made a night of it since Estabon pissed me off so badly (future journal fodder, but too fresh to write about now) I just had to take revenge out at the Bad Bar. I was sinisterly hot in my Dayam!Bra along with the requisite black blouse with perkiness for all to admire. The skirt was borrowed from Fern at the last minute and I finished it off with some completely bitchin’ fish net stockings and hip boots. These hip boots are too die for, right out of Zardoz. Zardoz I tell you. The night was complete hella fun though most of the memories have to be quarentined for the next week while I process it all.

Done with said teeth brushing, I am running out the door because I am a little late. Start the car, and see that I have forgotten the purse from hell. Cannot live without purse. Must have purse. Purse.

Returning to car from purse retrieval, I see a little tiny kitten run under the car. Dammit! I don’t have time for this kitty. I can’t just drive away for fear of treadmarks up kitty’s back. That would be bad Karma. I get on all fours, scowling under the running car for the little fur ball. “Here kitty”, I call out repeatedly. No cat in sight. It must have gotten scared and ran away. Whew! I could not live with one of a cat’s nine lives resting on my shoulders. I simply could not.

I leave the driveway with last night’s CD still playing. Visions of the Bad Bar return and I smile an evil knowing grin. Wait! What the hell was THAT? I turn off the stereo and slow the car down. Meww! The innocent plea from an obviously scared-out-of-my-wits kitty. I hear it again and immediately stop the car. This cannot be happening. I hear it again. Where is it coming from? I roll down the window and hear it again. It is under the mofo car.

I hesitantly exit the car, not wanting to find what my mind was playing out. Again, under the car. There is the kitten, all teeny and small in it’s cuteness up under my car clinging to the car for life to some part whose name I don’t know. Kitty is all covered in greasy dirt from under the car staring back at me wide-eyed through the grit. First thought: What the hell are you doing up there! Cars are not for cats. Not for cats mind you.

I try to coax kitty down from car unsuccessfully. Kitty doesn’t move, but spits and hisses uncontrobablly in my direction while creeping into other places of the car I can barely see let alone reach. “Hey, look here Cat, I am trying to save your little butt, and you dare hiss at me? You are the one messing up MY morning.” I turn off the car deciding the running car must be scaring it. Where is Esteban when I need him?

I, once again, creep down inelegantly to look for Kitty again. Not to be seen. Did it crawl further into the car where I can’t see it? I never did see it run off because you know I was watching for scramming cat. Not seen by me. Not.

I spend 5 minutes exhuasting my searching skills upon the car and declare the car must be cat free. All the way to work I kept the stereo off and drove slowly. Echos of the kitty squwals from under the car fill my head at every stop. I can’t shake it…the kitty under the car will be with me forever. It may be time to trade in the car for a cat-free model.

Fast forward

History is the greatest thing. I love my own personal history. Sometimes, I just look back at it and go ‘Wow, look at that. Isn’t that just a thing?’ Because you know, it happened and now it’s gone and you’re here right now because of it.

That probably made no sense at all.

Sometimes, there are just silly things that make me in love with it all. The other night, Esteban and I were lying in bed, doing that nauseating couple thing where we’re all snuggly-wuggly and just lying there, almost asleep like two baby birds in a nest fluffed with down, and he had just warned me to not bite him (which I do on occasion. I’m a biter. I can’t even help myself. If I really really like you, I might just bite you. But it’s just a love bite. Really. Love hurts sometimes.) and then I tickled his ribs and he did this weird undulating thing, which he then described as his Dolph Lundgren maneuver. And I was flummoxed, so I said ‘Dolph Lundgren? Like’ HeMan?’ No, no, it was a dolphin maneuver. Because that made so much more sense. So I asked him if he went to school to be so dorky or if it just came natural, to which he replied that he was a class 12 dork with a plus-twelve ability to spaz out and a magical ring of regeekeration.

Sexiest man alive, non?

What a crime it would be to forget that, though. What an absolute crime. Last night I had one of those few rare evenings where I wasn’t thinking about tomorrow or next week or next year or why I wasn’t born a trust fund baby or why I haven’t seen Finding Nemo yet (because those pelicans? My god, I almost stroked out from laughter during the previews. Esteban was mortified at my ability to be absolutely destroyed by a fart joke, particularly one combined with fish.). And the house was relatively clean and the floor all nice and shiny and wooden and looking as though it has always belonged in this house and we simply reunited it. And even though we have yet to put the moldings in and even though there was a pot of gnocchi slowly turning to Elmer’s glue in the kitchen, it just felt great to sit in the living room with the front door open and the full screen letting soft breezes fluff the belly fur of the cat as she luxuriates in the new rug in the middle of the floor. I don’t have those moments very often. Maybe only four or five times a year, where I am completely living in this moment and this place. And I think I miss a lot of stuff because my brain is going about four hundred miles a minute and life turns into a Monet at such speeds.

Like, I don’t want to forget a parking lot full of school buses I saw today, all stowed away for summer vacation. They looked like a field of buttercups. Or the comfy loose clothing of a developmentally disabled man who was waiting for a bus at lunch. He was singing to himself in baggy khakis and a denim jacket, looking for all the world like a Gap ad complete with soundtrack he made up inside his head. Because he made me happy.

Or the old iron doorknobs on the house we used to live in, the way they creaked, the way they were smooth like cobblestones, the way they were so perfect that I always wanted them to be more than just doorknobs, wanted them to rise up beyond their pedestrian occupations and go on to be place settings, fishing lures, saddle horns, sculptures. I want to remember the smell of sulfur as I lit a match at Evensong in St. Paul’s Cathedral, in the very room where Princess Diana’s body would lie in state two months later. I want to remember the eight year old boys in starched white collars that looked like coffee filters, their mouths in perfect Os as they filled with their tiny crystal voices a space large enough to fit God. I want to remember the noise Mo used to make when she was six, when she was laughing so hard that drool was coming out of her mouth, a sort of ‘Heeeeeeeeeeee’ followed by a slurp. I want to remember the smell of geraniums after a thunderstorm. I shouldn’t have spent the entire trip to Door County last summer thinking about the next week at work. I should have paid attention to how I was eating Queen Anne cherries and spitting the pits out the window and how it was raining and cold and we ate Swedish pancakes with lingonberries at the place with goats on the roof and how I ran into the English store to get scores of Hobnobs and how the red and white awnings over the hotdog place in Ephraim were beaded up with water and how I took my finger as I walked beside it and listened to the droplets go vit vit vit vit vit.

Last night, right after the Dolph Lundgren maneuver, Esteban started talking about 80’s music and then I realized that the first time in something like forever I didn’t have a song stuck in my head. Not a one. I made him stop talking and listened to the quiet inside my skull. It was cavernous. It was deafening.

‘I don’t have a song in my head.’ I said.

‘Wow. Really? Nothing?’ He asked, incredulous.

I was too. ‘Wow. No. Nothing. I think’ I think I’m frightened. It’s really weird.’

He promptly started singing Eddie Murphy’s ‘Party All The Time’, which remedied the situation. I thanked him, particularly since I already spent the entirety of 1986 with that fucking song stuck in my head. He giggled.

So I bit him.

Good Eats

Mangus gave me an early birthday present. Damn, he’s good. He’s the best gay boyfriend EVER. Especially to give me such a sexilicious body like that. Heeee! It makes me giggle every time I look at it.

Saturday night, Penny, Carissa and I embarked on our much anticipated road trip to see the live action revival of Rocky Horror Picture Show. I was pretty stoked. So stoked that I actually IRONED my ensemble. If you’ve never been to a midnight showing of Rocky Horror, the norm is to dress a little, er, racy, if not in actual costumes emulating the characters. I chose a sort of Catholic School Girl look, with black/white plaid skirt, black tights, black loafers, white button down French-cuffed shirt, open too far, rhinestone kitty collar, and funkified hair and makeup, which I then accessorized with my leather DKNY backpack tote and a cherry Charm Pop. If the look could be described in one word, that word would be ‘Meow.’

Then I demanded that Penny discard her chosen outfit and wear her black leather pants and lace-up sexy pirate shirt from the Hootchie Mama store. Cari, on the other hand, pled out with the hotness and opted to gather the Rocky props instead (rice, toast, newspaper, what have you.)

We drove down, talking about sex the entire way, as always seems to happen. I learned also that apparently I drive like a homicidal maniac. C’est la vie. We got to Milwaukee around 9 pm and proceeded downtown to find Ed Debevic’s, hoping to cozy up to the adorable waiter Nickels who looks like the Verizon Guy, but to our dismay, the restaurant was not where we thought it was. I hauled out my cellphone and called information. They told us the address and Carissa continued to hold to call the restaurant in case I couldn’t find it by the address. Number has been disconnected? I drove past where we thought it was’. Gone, all gone. Looking sad and shadowy and deserted. First the Hootchie Mama store downtown and now Ed’s! The world is a cruel place.

Instead, I offered that we could go to Brady Street, where there were ample excellent restaurants to be had and it was fairly near the theatre. We opted for Mimma’s, a restaurant I’ve visited in the past with excellent results. Mimma herself brought us to our table. Our waiter, Eric, was delightful, the right mix of flirty and fun and professional. The people at the next table were oozing pretension and we entertained ourselves by making fun of them. ‘Darling, you’ll never guess who called me yesterday’. Donatella Versace called me. You see, she’s had her uterus removed and is in the process of gilding it with gold. Then she’ll make a purse out of it and Gwynnie is going to carry it to the Oscars. I’m certain that it is just to DIE for’ sniff.’ By the time we made it through the first basket of bread, we had an entire story constructed in which Carissa’s jeans are the legacy of Gianni Versace, taken from drawings found in his bloodied hands, and I was investigating timeshares on Pluto because the moon was really getting filled with Euro Trash and the nouveau riche. Then I began to suspect that the patrons at the next table really WERE some kind of bigwigs, perhaps musicians or artists, or maybe even Keith Richards. They were 50-year-old Boomers wearing leather pants with blazers. I don’t know why, but that made it even more funny, darling.

For dinner, I got a shrimp and cannelloni bean appetizer (Gamberi alle Toscana) and a tomato/basil salad (Capricciossa). Carissa got something with red ravioli. Penny was having a hard time with the menu/book, so Eric recommended that Penny try something that had proscuitto, peas, and a cream sauce (I suspect that it was Tortelloni con Prosciutto e Piselli). We all should have asked Eric’s opinion, because Penny’s dish was like a mouth orgasm. We each ended up eating off each others plates and left the restaurant completely sated, but only after Carissa made friends with the people hanging out in the bar, because that’s Carissa’s secret superpower.

After dinner, around 11:20 pm, we headed to the Oriental. Rocky Horror was not on the marquee. Carissa jumped out of the car and inquired on the status of the movie. It was then that we learned that the schedule online was wrong. And that I sucked because I did not call and double check that they were indeed doing the Rocky Horror thing that night. So I drive like a maniac and I don’t double check and kill a Saturday night making a four hour road trip for nothing.

But at least I looked fucking adorable. And really, how much more can you ask of me?

My computer at home has crashed. Hard. Apparently it blew up a power supply and a main board, which is ridiculous because if you’ll remember, I just bought the new computer last Octoberish. I was beside myself all day Sunday. I kept trying not to panic, reminding myself that I had Netflixs to watch, actual physical hobbies that I could do. No reason to think about the email that I was missing. Or the games. Or the writing. Or the surfing. Or the’ gah. I tried to put the lack of computer out of my mind, but all throughout the day, there was this constant running dialogue inside my head, ‘I wonder if Alton Brown is married? I should go check. Arrgh, but I can’t.’ ‘This music’ this music is from what movie’. I know, IMDBDotCom’ but I can’t.’ ‘Did Chauffi reply to my email’but the world will never know’ arrrgh.’ ‘I should go research hotels for next Monday in Milwaukee’. But I am stuck in the fucking dark ages.’ ‘I should pay the phone bill through their site’ arrrrrgh!’ It was so frustrating.

By the way, I am totally crushing hard on Alton Brown. The guy from Food 911? Forgotten. Jamie Oliver? Actually, I never had a thing for Jamie Oliver, but I suspect Esteban does. Alton is my new Thomas Dolby food boyfriend.

You know, I always have a thing for unusual men. Penn Jillette, the Verizon Guy, Dave Matthews. Even Starbucks Guy wasn’t exactly Brad Pitt. And if you look at the guys I had real life crushes on in school (I always had a real life crush going on in tandem with a celebrity crush)’. Seventh grade was an adorable little geek boy, ninth grade was an honors student who wore glasses, tenth grade was a more traditional jock in my phys.ed class, but then in eleventh grade, it was Chuck, a newspaper dork who reminded me of Lloyd Dobbler. But it doesn’t even stop there. I spent two years completely in love with Peter Venckman, the Bill Murray character from Ghostbusters. And not just the live action one’ I would watch the Ghostbusters cartoon and get all squizzy inside for the CARTOON Peter Venckman, whom I believe was voiced by Dave Coulier. And that’s just wrong, getting turned on by Dave Coulier.

So, yeah, Alton Brown. That receding hairline, those glasses, his whole ‘can do’ attitude? Grrowwl. I mean, he freezes strawberries with freaking dry ice, you think he’s going to be satisfied with the missionary? Yeah. I’m just saying.

I’m probably oversexed. Strangely enough, there are no complaints from Esteban.

The people on the notify list have known about this for MONTHS (It is good to be notified) but I’m going to San Francisco again next week as a birthday present to myself. And because airfare was only $143. One hundred and forty three dollars. Damn. I spend that at the Prescriptives counter, I simply could not pass that up.

Esteban, however, is passing again. Because he’s a Burgermeister. But I’m stoked. STOKED! Monique! Jenfu! And now Eloi! And shopping! And shoes! And really good seafood! And crazy karaoke! And more futhamucking hills! Ok, that part sucks, but still. Yay! Vacation!
