It’s such a good feeling, a very good feeling

My Evil Throat Of Death continues to plague me. I’m all snuffy and my voice has slowly gone from sounding Kathleen Turnerish to the realm of Henry Kissinger. Tres sexy, non?

So I went to the Doctor on Wednesday. Dr. Perky never works on Wednesday so I got to see her backup guy. I don’t have a pseudonym for him. Dr. Hot N’Gentle, maybe we’ll call him. He’s sexy but in a tender, Sarah McLaughlin kind of way. He’s Rupert Murdoch mixed with a Walton boy.

‘Well, Weetabix, you’re certainly looking a lot better today!’ He exclaimed in his Hot and Gentle kind of way. And I did look better. I was wearing a light blue long-sleeved t-shirt that did good things to my complexion and pearl drop earings, a far cry from the enormous sweatshirt and sweatpants with my ghostly white face of last time.

‘Well, that’s because I’m not heaving into your garbage can.’ I quipped. With health there is sarcasm. He didn’t get to see that side of me last time. He instead got to see the shivering, bleary-eyed wanting-to-die Weetabix. ‘But I don’t think it’s completely gone away. I mean, I haven’t spoken with my real voice in a month and my throat is starting to hurt again and I’ve never really gotten better.’

He felt my sinus’ and looked up my nose (What the hell can they see up your nose? Seriously? It’s just a booger canal, right? I think all doctors are just some kind of sadists.) and down my throat and then tapped on my forehead (‘Does this hurt?’ ‘Ow!’) and on my cheeks (‘How about this?’ ‘MOFO OW!’) and then looked at my throat. He agreed that it wasn’t too bad yet but assured me that it would be getting worse.

‘Also, my neck really hurts. I think it’s my blimphoids or something.’

‘Hmmmm.’ He said, feeling up and down my neck and jaw. He screwed up his face and then said:

‘Well, Weetabix, exactly WHAT have you been doing with your neck?’

My mind filled with the image of me involved in many strange and surprisingly acrobatic acts of perversion involving my neck. It was as though that question, with the sort of speculative sotto voice he used, was apparently a subliminal cue. From the look of shock and horror on Dr. Hot N’Gentle’s face, his brain went there as well. The muzak had even taken on a rather specific ‘Bow chicka BOW BOW’ tone and for a brief moment, I had a mental image of a hot pizza delivery boy about to knock on the door of the examining room.

We both fought mutual blushes and he stammered that we were going to try Cinemax’. ZITHROMAX to combat the swelling’er’ CONGESTION ‘deep in my ‘ um’ throat. Yeah.

Note to self: schedule yearly physical on day other than Wednesday.

On a plus note, for all of the extra hours I have put into work this month, I have been rewarded with a half day off. Woot!

And I’m spending it going grocery shopping. Seriously. This is not my beautiful life.

I still keep crying quiet little sad tears over Mister Rogers. I probably should refrain from reading lovely articles such as this one but I just can’t help it. Read it if only for the bit about the subway ride with the children or the thing about the boy with the sword. They are all so beautiful. He was just such an incredible example of what we have a chance to be. The magic.

Be a sweetheart and make someone smile today. Or just smile at someone who isn’t smiling at all because it’s a nice thing to do. Or make someone’s day and sign a guestbook today. Or check out a diary you might not have read. Pretend to be an optimist if you’re a pessimist. Take a moment and find beauty in something you see every day. And most important of all things: look. Just look. It’s a big word, that. Look. When my brain used sounds like coloring books, the word “look” was a flash of green, like a leaf in June.

Look.

Have a wonderful weekend. It’s just full of possibilities.

I’m so glad you were my friend

The day I’ve dreaded for a long time has come.

As soon as I saw his face on the opening moments of The Today Show, I started murmuring “No no no no no nononononono…” but yes.

Yes.

A few hours ago, the world lost a little bit of warmth.

Fred McFeeley Rogers passed away early this morning.

I had a small goal in life that I never really vocalized to anyone. I wanted to get a hug from Mister Rogers. He was a hugger, that one. And this morning, as I drove to work with tears still in my eyes (you try to put make up on when you’re wailing, you just try it), every billboard reminded me of Mister Rogers.

Aim High.

Wait until you see what we’ve got in store for you!

There’s More to Love.

That last one especially. He understood that there was more to Love. Mister Rogers was unconditionally kind and calm and understanding. Even when he sang his hokey songs and fed the fish, he got it. There is more to Love. There is always more to Love than we will ever know.

So instead of an entry today, go read this one. And I wish I had that power. I really do. More than anything.

Mister Rogers, you made the world a better place.

You were special. We’ll miss you.

Fish, bubbles, and handwritten journals

Shhhhhhhhh.

Don’t speak.

Just sit there and listen.

Do you hear that?

No’ wait’Nevermind. It was nothing.

There it is again. Did you hear it that time?

Let’s just wait it out. We have some time, right? I have a whole little pot of Body Shop lip balm. Born Lippy, it’s called. I think that’s what I should have called my web page, instead of Dumber than a Box of Rocks. Because no one calls it that. It’s too long. Too wordy. Seven big ass syllables, which is a whole lot when you consider that we live in a world where everything needs to fit into a two second sound byte. Andy Warhol was wrong about the fifteen minutes of fame. No one has time for a whole fifteen minutes anymore.

But Born Lippy. However, it’s yet another mickey fickey trademark. Fucking copyrights. They Plague Me ‘.

Did I tell you? I ran out for takeout food the other night’ curry shrimp, actually’ yeah, it was really good’ you know, that little place on University’ yeah, by the nail place and the cleaners’ mmmhmmm’. Anyway, I was sitting there at the bar, waiting for my takeout order, and there was this beatnik boy in there, eating so close to the bar, sort of like he worked there, only I don’t think he did. And everything was quiet, it was just us, the woman taking down the Mongolian barbecue line, and Peter the cook who was in the kitchen making my shrimp’ and there was a television and it was tuned to CNN, and they were talking about the war and stuff’ yeah’ so, it’s quiet and all of the sudden, the beatnik guy says ‘What do you think about this war in Iraq?’ and I’m startled because he asked it so conversationally, as though we had been talking all along, as though we had even acknowledged each other, and I actually peaked behind the bar to see if he was talking to someone else. So I said sort of sarcastically ‘I try to think about it as little as possible.’ And he didn’t take that for an answer, and prodded me to make some kind of decision, and that’s when I realized that I honestly didn’t know JACK about the war in Iraq and I ended up postulating some kind of motivation behind the actions of our nation’s leaders and then wished and prayed that my shrimp curry would come before he realized how completely stupid I really am. And then he apologized for making me talk about something I didn’t want to talk about and then I felt even more stupid for being such an ostrich.

Listen’ there it is again. Sort of’ pingy, you know? Like metal, but sort of’ wet metal.

I’ll talk softer.

And so then I thought about how when I was growing up, Mom dated the hippy guy and we’d go to these disarmament meetings and have these No Nukes rallies. And I even did a watercolor painting about nuclear war with my little set of 8 Crayola watercolors. And in our basement we had a poster of Nagasaki. And there was a book on our bookshelf that had a little girl all burned, so hurt she couldn’t scream. And I remember how when I was growing up, I thought everything was futile because we were just going to get blown away or radiation poisoning when they nuked Chicago anyway and that no Volvo could drive fast enough to get away from a big mushroom cloud. And I remember thinking that it was ridiculous for the United States to declare that no one else could have bombs but us, so no wonder the rest of the countries all look at us and shake their heads. But sometimes it makes me feel dumb. Because honestly, I’d rather talk about boobs and nail polish and watch ‘You’ve Got Mail’ for the eight hundredth time. So yeah, I think that did something to my head when it comes to current events.

But the other night, something unique happened. It was an epiphany of sorts, although it had nothing to do with the war or anything else. I got two incredible pieces of mail, from two writers I admire greatly. It was actual mail, on paper, with a stamp and writing. And one was from my college friend Laurie, whom Esteban always called ‘The Girl With The Shit In Her Face’ because she was very decorated.

‘What? What did that have to do with war? Nothing’ other than the fact that she’s an activist for various things, peace and animal rights being foremost. But stay with me’.

I found her on the internet and while she doesn’t email a whole lot, she likes regular mail. I sent her a Valentine and she sent me back her chapbook and a lovely little letter with her crooked handwriting that I recognized immediately. It’s funny, that kind of thing, handwriting. Mine has multiple personalities, honestly. Sometimes it is thin and cold slanty perfect and othertimes it is fat and loopy and giggling and listening to Cyndi Lauper and Madonna on its Walkman while snapping lime green Hubba Bubba bubblegum. So I read her lovely little letter and then some of her poems, which were incredible and made me want to steal some of the lines, which is how you know when you’ve found something really good. Instead of appreciating it, you are jealous because you wish you had written it. Like Jincy Willett. She makes me jealous too. And Ethan Canin, but mostly because he attended and now teaches at the University of Iowa’s writing program.

No, I think the sound stopped now’ I don’t hear it anymore’ but let me finish.

So Sunday night, I gathered up all of my loose stuff and started trying to combine all of my pieces and scribbles of poems and vague writing into my current journal. Every homeless piece of something that I have stored on computer or in my planner. And I didn’t get very far, but it was lovely just the same, especially when I’d find the original of some poem and then the second and third versions all typed up and official. I could have done it for hours. Actually, I did sit there for hours, but I could have gone on all night. Literally.

The act of holding a pen, of scribbling your little glyphs onto paper. It’s so intimate. Not like these perfectly formed Times New Roman letters where I can type off a sentence at 100 wpm and then obliterate it just as quickly. It forces you to write at the pace of your breathe. A heartbeat for every word. It’s a strange thing, watching those random slashes and scribbles.

All through my old journals are pictures of fish. All sorts of fish. Lots of sharks, some googly-eyed cartoon fish, little segmented eel things, plankton, shrimp. I never realized that my doodles had a theme before.

And in one place, I found a little written conversation that I had with laurie, who only writes in lower case. It went something like this.

‘I ate too much peanut sauce.’

‘I’m sorry’

‘I smell pickled.’

‘Nope.’

And then there are little giddy children figures dancing across the page, off into the margins. Those have to be laurie’s, because my figures would have been chased by sharks.

So I did about a third of the organizing that needed to be done and ended up writing a couple of poems too, so now my current leather journal is a compilation of uncataloged poems, scribbles, song lists, poems all neatly typed out but then cut out crooked and taped onto the page, and a poem that I love by a friend I miss about the Hayakutake comet. And during all of this cutting and taping and scribbling, I realized that long fingernails have no place on the hands of a writer. So I cut them off and took off the polish. Ok, a bit extreme. I’ll likely polish them again, but for the moment, they are plain and short. Certainly not the nibbled nubs that they were when my notebooks swam with crill eaters and cartilaginous life, but shorter just the same.

You have my permission right now to club me over the head repeatedly with a Spiegel catalog if I decide to stop shaving my legs in the name of my art.

But the important thing there was that I realized as I sat there working through all of this stuff that was for me, just for me, that it was the best thing I’ve done in months. MONTHS. And I can’t believe that it never even occurred to me to do such a thing before then. Oh, I’ve gone through my old stuff, particularly while I was compiling my applications to the various grad school programs, and I’ve kept writing more, but to sit there and just dive wholly into the bulk of it, all of those really private words and scribbles and where I could see exactly how hard or how lightly I pushed the pen into the paper’ it was like the compass had aligned and was pointing straight north once more.

Sometimes when you think you’ve lost something, it’s exactly where you left it.

An entry is worth 15000 words.

Ok, I tried to be tricky and use mouseovers and flipping pictures and all sorts of HTML wackiness, but the people have spoken and said it sucks. So here are the captions in normal mode and no flippover on the booby picture.

Gah. I hate mofo html.

Allison looks just like Faith from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She’s our five by five bartender. The only downside is that the female bartenders don’t buy me drinks the way the male bartenders do. I still like Allison anyway though.

Bald Bartender/Bad Bar Owner looking particularly intelligent, along with Naked Chris. This was right after Naked Chris gave me green glowing sticker nipples. I wouldn’t let him place the third sticker so he got creative.

Not only can you violate building violations and be generally stupid at the Bad Bar, the employees actually encourage it. Steph, another bartender, is without her Red Leather Pants of Ass Kicking, but looks very hot just the same, dances on the bar in a maneuver we like to call ‘The Drunk Killer’.
Bald Bartender usually makes several wardrobe changes during the evening. Here he demonstrates that a macram’ tank dress is the friend of no man.
Once again, up on the bar. The song that was playing was Dueling Banjos from Deliverance, and they are doing Air Banjo with, appropriately enough, an empty bottle of Malibu. What? Why are you looking at me like that? I did NOT drink all of it. Sheesh.
Naked Chris, before he got Naked (although technically, he had a robe on. I was hoping he’d come out with a fig leaf, although he assured me that I really was better off if he kept the robe on. He asked Penny and I if we were girlfriends and I acted very offended, asking if he thought that I was butch, so he assured me that he didn’t, but that we were both hot and it would make him very happy if he could think about Penny and I making out. So Penny offered that we were bi-curious and Naked Chris declared that he would be buying us drinks. I whispered to Penny that I predicted that she and I would be making out by midnight for free shots, but we didn’t have to because whenever someone else wasn’t buying us drinks, Naked Chris bought us drinks. All night. We got off easy. Another girl had to show him her breasts. While standing on a bar stool. Seriously, that place is a mixture of Cheers, That 70’s Show, and Girls Gone Wild. It’s a very bad bar. Very bad. On the plus side however, I somehow came home with more money than when I started.
Elvis is everywhere. Elvis is everything. The Bermuda Triangle? Elvis needs boats. This guy was actually incredible and I think this was Elvis flirting, the way he was lying on the bar directly in front of us. Later, on a trip to the bathroom, he came up and hugged me and asked for a cheek kiss. I guess I got caught up in the hysteria. He promised to buy me a pink Cadillac. I wonder what I’d have to do to get a silver Lincoln LS instead?
After the last entry about the Bad Bar, we felt it important to get a picture of Evil High School Chris, and Penny rose to the challenge. This picture has NOT been digitally altered in any way. Is it just me or do you feel sort of dirty after looking at him? Ladies’ I think he’s single.
More Allison. The smile isn’t particularly Faith-like, but trust me on this one.
Pennilicious and Joel dance to some song that I’ve since blurred out, probably because my forehead was down on one of the leopard print barstools and Eric was offering to be my Magical Brick Wall of Support. The most interesting thing about this picture is that you can actually SEE the Snarky Skinny Bitches in the corner in the very act of being bitches. You see, at one point while I was on the window ledge dancing with Penny, the Old Skinny Bitches were apparently making snarky comments about me and Mo caught them and sneered and then tried to call them out on it, but they ignored her. Then she told me about it, and I was ready to seriously kick their asses, but Mo wouldn’t tell me which one was being the Leader Bitch. Actually, my real intent was not to actually kick their asses physically, but use my ‘kill them with kindness’ method, but Mo wouldn’t believe that I didn’t really want to get into a fight with women who obviously were old enough to be our mother&AO8AvwC9AO8AvwC9-s younger sisters. Then Mo was talking with one of them and asked if they had been making comments about me. She denied it completely, so then I joined in and she had Mo in one ear saying ‘My sister is one of the most fun people in this bar and she goes out of her way to make sure that people feel really good about themselves, and she always recognizes the best in any person. So I feel protective because I think that it’s great that she has such a healthy self image and doesn’t listen to what assholes say about her because they obviously wouldn’t if they knew here blahety blahety blah.’ And I was in the other ear saying ‘You know, it’s really hard for me to psyche myself and act as though it doesn’t matter what people think, and I have been overweight all of my life and I think as women we should support each other because the world is a mean enough place’.’ And she just kept saying ‘No, I think you’re beautiful, your eyes, you’ve got incredible grace.’ To me and to Mo ‘I think it’s great that you go out with your sister and you have such a bond.’ Like she’s Jerry Lewis and I’m sitting there drooling in a corner. Gah. I was about to invent some more patheticness and tell her that I had been sexually abused and used food to distance myself from society, but she obviously had horrible guilt, so mission accomplished. Don’t be messing with the team of Weetabix and Mo. If we don’t kick your ass, we’ll make you feel like shit. Hrrmph.

General Wackiness of the Bad Bar. Notice the steady consumption of alcohol.
Slutty Ho Lipstick makes its mark on yet another man. Seriously, the Weetabix lip prints were becoming like beads at Mardi Gras. It is frightening the power of my lips.
You’ve read about her. You’ve seen a blurry picture of her arm but now’for the first time ever on this page, an actual picture of my sister Mo. And Eric, who apparently is of the thought that if a girl kisses you, you should turn the other cheek. That was Penny’s kiss on his right cheek though.

This is the only picture I have of Nice Chris, who bought me many glowy cups of Malibu and Diet Coke. He was a true gentleman, unlike his old man friend Don, who was obviously wowed by the Dayam!Bra. However, at one point, I was wandering back to the bathroom and Nice Chris stopped me to talk, but Scary Guy I Went To High School With Chris was standing there and decided to give me a drunken scary hug, in which his hand snaked right around my waist and started playing with my junk in the trunk, ya know? So I beseechingly tried to talk to Nice Chris, who saw a damsel in distress and pulled me to him for a hug, hoping to break me free of Evil High School Chris. It did not work, and I became the filling in a Chris sandwich, people. I will undoubtedly repress that within days and have years of therapy to undo my fear of men named Chris. Nice Chris later came very sweetly asking for a Weetabix lip print later in the night, which was kind of scammy but I still obliged. Because he was nice’ and apparently I am very generous with my cheek kisses while drunk. Hey, I don’t call it my ‘Slutty Ho’ lipstick for nothin’.

Hey Rocky, watch while I pull a rabbit out of my hat. Again? That trick never works.

this is fucked up, right here

Hi.

Me? I’m drunk.

Malibu. Malibue and Diet Coke. I think I bought one drink, then Naked Chris bought the rest. He never did get naked. And then there was another Chris. And Elvis. And somehow my lip priunts got on Elvis, Chris, Eric, and a very old man named Don.

Good god.

Oh, and my sister stopped me from kicking the asses of several skinny bitches.

Seriously. Bitches. I think they were the moms of the previous skinny bitches. Or possibly the First Bitches (kind of like the First Evil on Buffy but.. not. Oh! And Faith was our bartender. She was five by five, b, ain’t that right? Want’ take’ have). They were like muses from greek mythology only bitches. Or butches. No, they were bitches.

Bitches.

Fucking bitches.

Fucking skinny bithces.

I so cannot spell when drunk.

And there was Elvis. Did I tell you that? Elvis. Elvis is everywhere.

My fingers, however, are not everywhere and typing is oh so hard at this point.

Esteban just came in and told me to come to bed. And I’m shirviering.

Shivering. That’s the wrd. Right there. Shivering.

And I wore my tinerkerbell tshirt with my tinkerbell sundies. Like underoos but for big girls.

That sounds like a special department at Sears, doesn’t it? Big girls. Like ‘hefty’. I always hated that word. Hefty. It’s a garbage bag, people, don’t call your children ‘hefty’ because it’s just not right.

Damn.

Goig to bed nowl

Stabbing Assward

You know who is way better than me? Way funnier and way more cool?

No, don’t answer LadeeLeroy. I don’t acknowledge that she exists. She is my arch nemesis, even though she’s a fellow 12% Beermate, because sometimes people are so clever that it’s not enough to hate them a little. You have to declare them a nemesis. And since I have only one nemesis (unless you count my wicked step-monster, but she’s been laying low, perhaps going through some kind of pupa stage in which she will emerge with new more powerful paranoia and a pretty pair of wings to frighten predators), LadeeLeroy gets to be the Arch Nemesis.

But as I was saying’

Sundry. She’s very very funny. And cute. And she works for a company that not only makes her gourmet dinners and lunches but also provides massages, whereas MY company would ask me to take a laptop and a cell phone if I were ever perhaps hemorrhaging from my eye sockets and needed to be rushed to Mayo Clinic for emergency’um’ eye socket procedures.

But anyway’ Sundry. She made me pass a dehydrated strawberry from my dinner of Special K Red Berries through my nasal cavity while I was reading her latest missive. It was the Dutch Oven that did it. You can always destroy me with a good fart remark. It’s my fatal weakness.

Please don’t tell LadeeLeroy that though. That bitch doesn’t need any help.

You guys rock, by the way, on song suggestions. I started downloading last night, burned a CD this morning, and proceeded to be somewhat antsy and distracted as I tried to quality check it during work today. Except that I kept thinking alternately about Legolas, John Corbett, Russell Crowe, the Irish Ya Ya guy, the Verizon Guy, and strangely enough, Norman Feld.

The final mix for my friend, in the burned order:

Prince ‘ When Doves Cry (she’s very hot for Prince)
Terrance Trent D’Arby ‘ Sign Your Name
INXS ‘ Need You Tonight
Supreme Beings of Leisure ‘ Strangelove Addiction
Faithless ‘ Addictive
Evanessence ‘ Bring Me to Life
Puddle of Mud ‘ Control
Rosey ‘ Love
Dave Matthews Band ‘ Crash
Garbage – #1 Crush
NIN ‘ Closer
Stabbing Westward ‘ Haunting Me
K’s Choice ‘ Virgin State of Mind
Sting ‘ I Burn for you
John Mayer ‘ Your Body is a Wonderland
Sarah Mclachlan ‘ Your Love is Better than Chocolate

It was a really really hard decision. I also liked the Jump Little Children song Habit, The Faint’s Sex is Personal, and Poe’s Not a Virgin (which may go on one of my Going Out mixes) I really enjoyed downloading those songs and I now have this new love for Stabbing Westward and am addicted to the Evanessence song. I honestly didn’t want to hand over that CD but I quickly burned myself another one, swapping out the lighter stuff and the 80’s music with the above songs and am still downloading some of the later suggestions (god, why didn’t I think of ‘Fuck Me Kitten’ by one of my favorite bands ever? Because I am dumb. That is all. Dumb.)

I knew that you guys would come through for me. Thanks! Squeeeee!

Oh, and speaking of thanks’ I just got a notice that Gracielou, Ladyloo, Caenis, and Aswanber signed up for Swappingtons and listed me as a referral! And they are now my best friends.

Yes. I can be bought out with points. The Swappaddiction has started. I sent out the first batch of Bad Bar Weetamix’s and the second batch are going out tomorrow. I must say that I’m rather impressed with how they look. I even put a purty official picture of the Bad Bar’s sign on the label, to make it a true ‘musical postcard’ from The Bad Bar.

There are currently two Weetamixes up on Swappington’s that need to be loved right now. Won’t you adopt a little Bad Bar Weetamix CD? They have all of their shots and will be a true companion until the end.

I am such a damn pimp.

(Scene: The residents of Casa Bix are watching Will and Grace. Esteban is sick and drinking a lot of juice. Weetabix is eating a bowl of cereal for dinner, because she is eight years old.)

Weetabix: She has no boobs.

Esteban: I know.

Weetabix: None.

Esteban: She’s sort of pretty but then you look’ and nothing.

Weetabix: That is just a really bad dress on her. It sort of emphasizes how much breast she doesn’t have.

Esteban: Uhh’.you know, Weeter, I have had bad bowels tonight. It’s the juice.

Weetabix: Seriously’ she’s just flat.

Esteban: I was going to the bathroom before’ and I couldn’t even breathe. And then the cat left, so I knew that it was bad.

Weetabix: What? Why are you telling me this? I need an Assteban update?

Esteban: Tilly got up and left. And she gave me this loooooook’.

Weetabix: Ok’ look’ I am eating food with a timeline here. If you make me start laughing, my cereal is going to go all soggy and then I will have no dinner whatsoever because of your ass.

Esteban: Aw’ you’re so mean. I just was telling you about my poo and how bad’

Weetabix: I’m just saying’ hasn’t your ass done enough damage for one night? I mean, Tilly doesn’t smell that great on her own and if she makes that kind of statement about your foulness, you must be pretty rank. So let’s not also ruin an innocent bowl of Special K Red Berries.

Esteban: You mean Honey Bunches of Oats n Berries?

Weetabix: No, that stuff sucks. I should just throw that box out. I thought it would be like the Special K stuff but better because it wasn’t diet cereal, but I was oh so wrong.

Esteban: Thank you, because I took a handful of that stuff, thinking it was fruit free normal non-foo foo cereal and ohmygod I had this horrible vision that I was eating scabs.

Weetabix: Thank you (puts bowl down)

Esteban: Sorry.

Weetabix: And even that is not as scary as Grace’s concave breastless chest.

Esteban: It’s like she’s got two little flesh pillows.

Weetabix: She’s not even an A cup. She’s a six-ounce cup.

Esteban: It’s like she only has one boob but they parted it down the middle.

Weetabix: Exactly.

Esteban: I know.

Weetabix: I think it’s the dress. I think she shouldn’t wear a dress with a six-inch wide plunging neckline because she still shows absolutely nothing.

Esteban: No, it’s not the dress. You can watch her skin sort of do that thing right by her neck every time she moves and ohmygod I’m going to have nightmares now. It’s the juice. She needs to drink more juice

Weetabix: The thing that is ridiculous is that I can’t imagine any gay man would allow her to go out looking like a plank board wearing a woman suit. It just doesn’t compute.

Esteban: Ooooh’ there they go again.

Weetabix: What?

Esteban: The juice’ my ass. Tilly? Tilly, come back here.

Weetabix: Oh dear God!!!!! MY EYES!!! It burns! Why does it burn!!

Esteban: I’m saying. This is Assteban signing out. Have a safe and pleasant tomorrow!

Another time when a Greek chorus would have been helpful

So I was on the phone with my drunken mama and mentioned to her that I would be going to San Francisco in a few weeks.

“I wish I could go somewhere. No one ever invites me anywhere. It’s not like I’ve ever gone anywhere in my life. You go everywhere and do everything all the time. You’re so lucky.”

Seriously, I could almost see her crawling up onto a cross in her living room and asking her father in heaven why he had forsaken her with the inability to earn frequent flier miles.

I rolled my eyes, especially at the “lucky” comment. It wasn’t luck. It was by design. I made things happen. I decided what was important. It is, for instance, important for me to have fun, to go to different places, to expand my life experiences. It is not, for example, important for me to do extraordinary amounts of drinking and allow people to mooch off me with pathetic excuses about how they are down on their luck. Nor is it part of my personality to basically wait around for some mythical windfall of cash to drop into my lap.

But I didn’t say that. No. Instead I said “Mother, if YOU want to go someplace, then go someplace. All it would take for you to go to San Francisco is the $220 in airfare.”

And as the words left my mouth, it was like the final scene of The Longest Yard as my brain tried frantically to recall the words back into my mouth, with an anguished “NoooooooOOOOOOOooooooooOOOOOOOOHHHHHHH!”

“Wow! That’s a great idea!” She brightened. “You and I could share a hotel room and I’m about to get my tax return in ten days… when are you going?… oh my, and there’s a special right now at my bank where if you sign up for a direct deposit checking account, you can get a buddy ticket and fly free, so all I’d need to spend money on would be my food and going out and oh my gosh, that would be so great because you always have such fun and I’ll have to talk to Grandma about watching Jonathon… I’vegottoruntothebankrightawaybye!”

There I sat, listening to a dial tone, envisioning my drunken mama making passes at my friends, or having grand discussions with the sea lions in Fisherman’s Wharf, or pretending that she can speak Chinese in Chinatown (because she worked for a Chinese restaurant for eight years and felt that was immersion into the language). And the sad realization that it would be easier and less painful to get rid of a flaming case of herpes than to ditch my mom in San Francisco.

And I could only sit there and cradle my head in my hands. My head which had failed me. Every stupid thing I have ever done has originated in my head. Perhaps surgery of some nature would be beneficial. Lobotomy. Decapitation. Any of the above.

So I quickly called her bank to learn more of this free ticket. Apparently, you would need to buy the first plane ticket at full price in order to get the Leech ticket for free. Something I wasn’t willing to do. So I quickly devised a plan. I would use the bait and switch method.

She called back, very forlorn. “You’d have to spend $450 for your ticket… and you wouldn’t want to do that for me.” with the rather obvious intonation that she hoped that I would do just that. For her.

“Mom… listen. You don’t really WANT to go to San Francisco, you just want to go on vacation right? So let’s actually plan a trip with the entire family… you, me, Esteban, Mo, Abigail and Jonathon….maybe to Disneyworld in Florida… and we could rent a condo or something and it wouldn’t be all that expensive… and you’d have time to save up rather than scrambling for funds.”

Given that she punctuated my little practiced speech with “YES!” and “YESSSSSSSS!”, I think I managed to walk away mostly unscathed. I walked over to tell Mo about my horror and she pointed at me and cackled about how I almost had to take Mom on a vacation with me. Then I told her about the trip to Disney that I had implicated her in. She grumbled a bit but understood that when in the crossfire, I had needed to buffer some of the agony. And she’s up on the Disney thing, having a child who will then be five.

But we’re both pretty sure that at one point we’re going to find Mom in the sack with one of those guys who walk around wearing the big character heads. And then have to have a rather painful status conversation with the folks back home.

“Mom’s got a new boyfriend who is Goofy. (pause) No. Really, Grandma. He’s Goofy.”

If you don’t watch Buffy, (and wait a second… why aren’t you watching Buffy? Seriously… watch Buffy. It’s too good to miss) just skip this part:

Oh Spike you hot souly hunk of a manpire. Between you and the hot brooding Principal, I was awash with gleeful man loving. You almost caused me to forget about my current lust for John Corbett and the Irish guy from the Ya Ya movie. But there were definite shark-jumping elements with the Dawn knowing Sumerian all of the sudden thing. And I really wish that Kennedy would stop channeling Joe Polniaczek from Facts of Life because I keep expecting the First to come in as her father Moe Greene with a shot-out eye.* And Buffy? Why did the wardrobe truck from Fleetwood Mac’s The Dance throw up on you?

*You see, Alex Rocco played Joe’s father on the show, but it was at the same time that The Godfather 1 & 2 were playing incessantly on HBO and it traumatized me to see him get his eye shot out as Moe Green and then be a deadbeat dad in freaking Peekskill, NY. And maybe I should stop with the pop culture references when they become so obscure that they need footnotes.

OH! I almost forgot.

I’m compiling a mix CD for friend and her new boyfriend. and I’m currently having a problem deciding the songs that should be on it. The centerpiece of the CD will be Nine Inch Nail’s “Closer” because… damn… that’s one hot song. I get a little sweaty just thinking about that one. I’m also throwing on Supreme Beings of Leisure’s “Strangelove Addiction”, K’s Choice “Virgin State of Mind”, Fiona Apple’s “Love”, and probably Puddle of Mudd’s “Control”. But now I’m stumped. I’d put John Mayer’s “Your Body is a Wonderland” on it, but I’m afraid that Trent and the boys would kick the snot out of him and then Fiona Apple will be throwing her skinny little body all over them. So I could use some suggestions… tell the comments section.

Your nomination is better than chocolate

I have all of this other writing to do today, a Quoted update to post, and in fact, I even have ‘You’ve Got Mail’ on pause in the living room, but instead, I’m drawn to this page. I’ve been thinking about bodies again, body shape, my body, the bodies of other folks. In last week’s Buffy, I was disturbed to see how thin Anya is getting. Perhaps because she is in movies now and realizing that her days of playing a 20-year-old thousand year old demon are numbered.

My weight loss has lessened during the winter. I’m guessing because I am not swimming three times a week nor am I going for my 6 am walks anymore. But still, I had a rather momentous occasion in Lane Bryant this weekend, wherein I tried on a pair of jeans that by rights should have been far too small and they were not, in fact, too small. In fact, they just fit. And when I put my Hottie Jeans back on, I realized how loose they really were, how baggy, how they sort of drooped around the sides. Still can’t get into the ‘small’ jeans, though, although I could wear them without a problem if it weren’t for the slight technicality of actually zipping them. And the shirts I had purchased at Torrid that were by rights too clingy to wear without a hoodie are now just right. Although Esteban still feels that they are too clingy, as he occasionally has flashes of Cro-Magnonesque Male Own Woman Syndrome.

I bought the jeans. You know I bought the jeans. I don’t even have to tell you that, right? Because if you put on a pair of jeans in a size you haven’t seen in more than six years, you would immediately buy them too. And then I celebrated by going to Godiva and buying a $40 box of chocolates. Hey. Don’t look at me that way. They were 50% off because they had Valentines decorations on them.

And it’s not that I’ve necessarily lost so much weight or even that I intend to keep losing more. It seems to be sliding off somehow. I’m not necessarily TRYING very hard. I drink a lot of Dasani. For breakfast, I eat the Special K with the hunks of dehydrated strawberries in them. And yesterday, I ate the entire top tray of that box of chocolate (FYI: $40 of Godiva chocolate is NOT a lot of chocolate)

Sometimes I look over to the mirror that I can see from this keyboard. It’s a fifty-year-old door mirror that came with the house and is terribly warped. And I will bob my head, pushing my reflection over the distortions, looking for the fat me and the skinny me. And I never see either of them. It’s always just me looking back. I think I’ve been waiting for some incredible day when I’ll look into the mirror and say ‘Well, THERE you are! I’ve missed you!’ but I’m starting to realize that I never really went anywhere. I’ve been here all along.

Perhaps it’s all a part of getting older. Or getting wiser. Or getting more stupid. But at least I’ve learned one lesson.

Life is too short to eat sub par chocolate.

Holy poop!

Someone (or someones) nominated me for a Diarist award and I’m now in the Finalist round! Or actually, three Diarist awards, or two awards plus one for Chauffi’s Guest Entry. I’m totally ecstatic! I wooted so loudly this morning that Esteban heard me from his shower and thought that I saw a bug or possibly a dismembered foot.

Congratulations to my extremely talented co-nominees: Trance Jen and Shelley Anne in the Best Journal Overall category, Redhairedgirl and Discount Satori in the Outstanding Entry category, and CosmiCrayola in the Guest Entry category.

I guess I’ll get to schmooze with them at the awards ceremony. Is it true that they’re getting Greg Kinnear to host? I don’t know. I’m all new at this. I’ve been tuned to E! for the nomination announcements but I haven’t seen anything. And what will I do if I see Joan and Melissa on the red carpet pre-show? Should I schmooze them or smack them? And what am I going to wear? Oh, the possibilities!!!

Thank you! I’m so very honored. You have no idea how great it is to be nominated! Make sure to check out the excellent writing and vote for your favorites.

This morning, it is a balmy 20 degrees, up from negative eight million, and it feels as though the world is waking up. Although it isn’t, really, and it’s all Mother Nature’s clever ruse. She’s just resting, filling her lungs to blow a breeze so cold it makes your soul shiver.

And I, however, have the beginnings of a baby migraine. Mickey fickey genetic makeup that causes these mini breakdowns inside my head. I suspect sometimes while I am watching the explosions when I hear cymbals, the fragments of light like ice crystals into my eyes, that these are stories inside my head that I never wrote down. They are fighting a way out of my head no matter what I do. I’m terribly remiss about writing sometimes and I suspect that this diary is one way that I can alleviate the guilt of not writing those little brain movies down.

Esteban’s tour of duty at Chez Parents is almost over. They will be returning from Cancun on Saturday and then I will have to relinquish my annexation of the middle of the bed. I’ve been doing ballet at night, it seems, reenacting the pirouettes of my dreams between cloudlike sheets. The new bed does not have a headboard nor a footboard and is so high that it seems a bit like a pedestal. Last night, I dreamt that I slept on a wedding cake, a bride fallen asleep inside a pillow of tulle, waiting for her little plastic groom. Mrs. Havishsham combined with Princess Aurora while some unseen voice sung Cotton’ the fabric of our lives..

I ran out midmorning for some Advil Migraine and an institution-sized bottle of Diet Coke. It seems to have staunched the flow of agony from behind my right eyebrow. I no longer feel as though my head will implode with a nice meaty squick sound. Now there is merely a wooden clothespin there, but I can live with that. And I can sit here without sunglasses on, which was making my coworkers wonder if I had gone Hollywood all of the sudden. They were my lovely new CK sunglasses, so I can understand their concern. And I’m wearing my Bad Girl t-shirt from Torrid today with red hoodie and my hair is all crazy. I look like a sell out. Or like I’m coming down off something.

I should have known that there was a migraine in the staging area of my head. I’ve been all light sensitive since yesterday and this morning, I was driving to work with the radio off (cymbals’ the cymbals hate me. They are everywhere, lurking with their wicked friends’drums, people with screechy voices and the piano keys that live above middle C) and thinking to myself, which is a dangerous thing right there but incredibly scary when there are these words in my head that are trying to bust outta da joint, and suddenly, I thought about this picture that Hez took of me talking to Pamie at Journalcon last October. I look all inbred and freakishly shiny and my head decided that the picture needed to be a panel of a comic book and the thought bubble coming from Pamie would read ‘My god, is there a light shining directly out of her chin?’ and the thought bubble coming from me would be ‘I think I just made a poopy.’ And I then I almost crashed the Monte, because I was laughing at the sheer comedic genius that exists in the word ‘poopy’.

I have been wondering for a while why the Dreadbaron calls me a ‘total freakazoid’ in his diary profile. However in that one instance, it all became clear.

I think I just made a poopy.

Umm’.

I can’t help it. Still funny. Even with the headache. Or perhaps because of the headache. I don’t know. It is a mystery. I think I’ll just go back to listening to the Etoys song over and over and being mad at people for having the audacity to talk in conversational tones.

I’m leaving. On a jet plane.

So my life. What a strange thing it is. Sometimes it poops in my hand and then looks at me very smugly. And then other days, it’s singing the tenor part of an Andrew Lloyd Webber song with me about how wonderful the world is.

This week, I’m working uber long hours, hence the infrequent updates. I was at work yesterday for something like 12 hours because it was our big delivery day and something always goes awry. Last night, I was literally shaking from stress. What is more, it coincided with the final day of my antibiotics for the Throat of Fiery Death and it’s still scratchy and sounding like I’ve been smoking Marlboros every day since my stint as a cabaret girl in the follies during Prohibition. I’ve got to call my doctor and make another appointment. However I have found a rather happy coincidence in that not only does a Wendy’s Frosty taste really good, they are rather therapeutic for a chronic sore throat. Mary Poppins would undoubtedly approve.

See? Musicals. It’s all musical reference Thursday.

But last night, as I was working very very late, my friend Joel calls and tells me that he is sitting outside of my office and has a present for me. The present? Bootleg copy of the Dave Matthews concert Esteban and I attended over Labor Day. How damn cool is that?

Joel rocks. Officially rocks. In case there was ever any doubt.

And it’s a great reminder of how incredibly cool my life is sometimes. The sheer serendipity of attending that concert on a whim. It was such an incredible day filled with such incredible feelings. I can hardly look back upon it without smiling.

So today, I got an email saying that certain airfares have gotten extremely low. Call it the Level Orange sale or something, I don’t know, but suddenly, it’s way cheap to fly from Green Bay to San Francisco. Apparently, the airlines are managed by a guy called Crazy Eddie and at these prices, you’d be crazy to not go to San Francisco.

So, I called Esteban and whined, ‘I want to go back to San Francisco.’ And he replied, ‘Ok’ you know I can’t deny you anything.’ Which is just the kind of thing that makes me love him to death’. When I utterly expect him to axe my crazy whims, he indulges them.

In 20 days, I will be in San Francisco.

Yeah. I’m spoiled.

Serendipity. You’ve just got to love it.

(Not the movie with John Cusack and Kate Skinnygale. That was sort of painful, even though there was the lovely visage of Mr. Cusack to numb a bit of the pain.)

On a down side, one supreme bit of irony is that my third favorite author (Most favorite author being John Irving and first runner up being Margaret Atwood) TC Boyle will be giving a public reading IN San Francisco the night that I fly back home. Yeah, that stings a little bit. But not really. I’m confident that fate isn’t ready for TC and I to hook up quite yet. Fate wants me to be able to slap his ass with my Pulitzer Prize winning novel or some such.

Stop looking at me like that. A girl can hope.

But life’ seriously’ if you dream it, do it. My life is very. Just that.

Very.

Heeee!

Oh’ and Buffy? One syllable’. Woot. What a delicious plot twist. At least they didn’t draw out acknowledging who Wood’s mother was. Because then I would have been writing letters to Noxon again. But she gets a nod. And Angel? Oooooooh’. But Conner is still way too scrawny to be as strong as they claim he is. But then, I suppose Buffy is too. However, I never need to see another shirtless Conner as long as I live. Shirtless Wesley? No complaints from me.

Dear Unclebob,

Damn it. You knew who the damn Mole was again. I think you are perhaps in league with the devil. Or the folks at ABC. If so, UB, please go kick some Moley Russell’s Wart and find out whatever possessed the producers to exchange yummy silver fox Anderson Cooper with freaking dorky Marcus Allen.

Seriously. Classic style with a hint of sardonic wit? Or goofy jock boy? How hard was that decision?

And UB? I think you’ve got a Swappaddiction. I’m ready to do an intervention if needed. I’m just saying.

Love ya,
Weeter
