Over dramatic much?

Come… gather round the campfire. Let me tell you a tale of an incredible woman… a woman who knew the value of a dollar and a good coupon. Some say she was a goddess, sent down from the heavens to inspire the weary sisters who’ve been downsized. Some say she is a myth, created by advertisers and merchandisers, hoping to drum up sales. But I know differently. Sit. Listen.

One blustery Friday morning, our intrepid curvy young woman went out in search of pleasure. No, not that kind of pleasure, the innate wonderful sense of longing and fulfillment that can only be found by scouring disheveled racks of clothing, battling shoppers and passing the cookie stand with a self-righteous look upon her face. The type of pleasure that can only be gained by shopping. Yes. Mall shopping. No, no, never you mind the economic pundits that say that the mall is dead. It is not dead, and nor is it the much lauded marketplace of days gone by, the urban village where people of like minds can come together for conversation, companionship and frappuchinos. No. The mall is a battlefield. It is the urban wasteland where survival is measured not in kills or be killed but rather in the percentage of net income left upon departure. It is the last bastion of evolution. Survival of the stylish.

Our young woman arrived at the mall early, time to plot out her attack despite the throngs of fallen, the mall workers who could only bear witness to the arena of life, swinging their arms in a “places to go, things to buy” manner which was belied by their wispy jogging suits and scuffed athletic shoes which had never been outside. She plotted her course. First stop, the store which she liked to refer to as the Better Dressed Plump Ho store. She wasn’t crazy about the clothes but they occasionally had some cute stuff. No, her true quarry here was lingerie. Bras to be precise. Bras which would hoist her good stuff and point them to the heavens, thus defying her age and genetic predisposition to store months of Venti Vanilla Mochas in her posterior. However, buoyed by a recent dalliance with healthy eating, she tried on a few pair of pants. Nothing grand. Nothing inspiring. She would not be stymied and buy something just to fulfill the desire to walk out of the clothing store with something she could exhibit to the public. No. She had more self-esteem than that. She deserved pretty undies, even at $15 a pair. But what is this? Her favorite demi bras on sale for $15? And a lovely set of jammies, long sleeved and long pants, to keep her warm in the cold fall air? And yes, she had a coupon. Oh yes she did. Final tally: three bras, a pair of jammies, a foundation type garment (that she will NOT call a girdle because only grandmotherly types wear girdles and she is NOT a grandmotherly type even if she has a few grey hairs. I’m just saying.), for $80.

Next, she made her way once again past the cookie store (a traumatic and brave experience) into the Body Shop, where she found a travel size container of Stripper Scented Coconut Body Butter for only $7. The perfect size for her carry on.

Now a normal shopper would have taken pause here. A normal shopper would have taken inventory of their bounty and perhaps decided that they should stop. But not our curvy young warrior. Yes. I used the word warrior. For you shall soon see why she is an inspiration to us all.

Next she scurried across the grand expanse of parking to a strip mall to the store which had become a second home to her. Yes, she had done a furious bout of consumerism in foreign lands and had not yet even had a morsel of food but still stood ready, armed with a charge card and another coupon. Quickly, she went on a scouting mission, circumference the store, plotting where the cutest clothes resided. They would be hers. Oh yes. She was already wearing a retro t-shirt and her boot cut low rider jeans (which, despite the connotations, actually look really cute and not at all like the punch line of a fat joke). She then pillaged the jeans rack, taking not one but two pairs of very flattering jeans (normal price $65, sales price $39.99). She quickly made allies with both of the sales people in the store, not really certain if it was just her normal friendliness or a tactical move that would come in handy. She also found four cute pairs of panties (4 for $20, normally $12.50 each), and five pairs of socks ($7 each, but buy three get two free). With her coupon, the total came to $74.63 and she felt a moment of victory, a battle hard won. But wait… one of her allies, the older sales lady, pulled from a shelf below the register, a coupon to take $10 off a $50 purchase. With a sheepish “I’m not sure if this will work or not.” she scanned it and brought the price to $64.63.

And so it went down, history to be passed down from generation to generation. She was not a goddess. No. Not a myth or a waiflike person as portrayed by Ashley Judd in the blockbuster hit Not Without My Coupon, but a real woman, flesh and blood. She lived. She lived to inspire you to shop, to roam free and purchase without fear. She is one of you. And she was real.

Now get shopping.

Yeah. I’m overly dramatic. I can’t help it. I think I’m going to tell my grandchildren about that shopping trip.

I had a lovely weekend. On Saturday Esteban and I went to the farmer’s market. I brought my Canon and took many lovely pictures of various autumnal vegetables. The lighting was incredible at 10:00 (yeah, we overslept) and I hope that some of the shots turned out. I stupidly just took the camera and didn’t switch lenses so I was walking around with the intense zoom lens on, making it difficult to focus on things from above because I was too close. But still, it was divine. Scored a lovely butternut squash, a bag of Gala apples, a bag of Cortlands, and some radishes for Ward. Esteban has been struck with a cold and is fairly petulant and whiny. He fled to the comfort of the car to nosh a Cortland while I walked around and shopped and basically soaked up the remains of the summer while reconciling that autumn is here.

Esteban then went to work for awhile and I went to get my hair cut and various parts of my face ripped off by the always lovely Stacy. My hair is really short now because I’m growing it out. No. That makes sense. Really it does. Somehow in crazy girl logic.

I then went home and made a pork loin, the butternut squash, some homemade bread, and baked potatoes. I would have made an apple cobbler, but I was too busy with also doing laundry and cleaning the bedroom. I managed to clean one side of the bedroom and spray the dust mite stuff so that my allergies don’t eventually turn me into a gigantic quivering mass of snot. It was direly in need of cleaning, too. I had planned to get to Esteban’s side as well, but as I’m completely allergic to dust, I find it helpful to spread these little acts of Cleaning Nazism out and give my lungs time to recover.

Then I went over to Ward & June’s house to drop off Ward’s radishes, but he was at work. June was very excited to see me in jeans and actually patted my butt at one point. That was a little strange. If I were a football player, it would mean that I had scored a good play. I have no idea what the Mom Butt Pat means. Perhaps it means the same thing. June and I also had a big bra discussion. No, not discussing big bras, although in my case it would be appropriate. At one point, she pulled down her pajama top to show me the bra she was wearing. And then I was struck by the strangeness of that. Do other people wear bras at night? Am I a freak because I let the girls out to roam under my jammies? Is that somehow detrimental? Will they be flopping down around my knees by the time I hit forty? I need to know answers, people!

And then that brings up another point that Penny and Carissa were discussing. Do you rewear a bra or do you wash them after one wearing? One side of the arguement is that you don’t rewear your panties unless you grew up in a truck stop. And then there is the point that bras are way more expensive than panties and you have fewer bras than panties. And honestly, that makes complete sense too because finding a good supportive bra who will be there for you and make you look good is harder than finding a good husband for some women. At least, it was for me, and the husband thing sort of happened without much intervention from me, whereas a bra is a different matter entirely. I’m completely torn because I see the logic on both sides. Usually I’m wearing a specific bra for a specific outfit but if I’m wearing a normal daily bra two days in a row (like on weekends) and Day One wasn’t all sweaty, I tend to rewear once, (a habit I picked up when I was a teenager and only had but two bras) but now I’m wondering if that makes me gross? And you have no idea how much soul searching and bravery it’s taking to post that on the internet. Why is it that it’s easier to talk about some of the crazy stuff that I post here (like the trip to the porn shop or how itchy my arm pits get sometimes), but I’m terrified that y’all will think I’m smelly. And do you rewear jeans? Some people rewear jeans and some people don’t. I tend to throw everything in the dirty hamper, but maybe I’m living a double standard. Do you rewear a sweater? What about a suit?

And while we’re on the subject of bra revelations, let me tell you this: I still put my bra on like I’m twelve years old, latching it in the front and twisting. Well, that just can’t be good for it. I’ve been practicing putting it on like an adult, though. I’m quite proud that I got one hook latched a few weeks ago. But it makes me feel so retarded. Oh sure, guys, you like to brag that you can unlatch them one handed. Big whoop. So can I. I’d like to see you hook the damn thing behind your back without using a mirror. Let’s see an Olympic event in THAT.

These are the philosophical discussions that matter. That free will thing that Decartes goes on about? Pointless. That whole “What is the meaning of life” that Camus pondered for decades? Who cares. Just tell me how often I can wear my bras without being a skank. That’s all I’m asking.

Been caught stealing…

Time is running out to enter the Banner Ad contest! And then you’ll be kicking yourself that you didn’t make me a banner ad. You know you will. Go.

Do it now. I’ll wait.

See. I waited. Now doesn’t that feel better, knowing that you finished up that nagging little project. Good job. Now mail it to me. See how easy that was?

Oh goodness. And I’ve been complaining that my life was as boring as sin and suddenly I have so much to talk about that it’s not even going to fit in one entry. Perhaps not even two. Well’ ok, probably two.

The little housekeeping stuff first:

Esteban’s home. And grumpy. He’s decided that he hated New York. He’s so completely rural that I sometimes wonder how I ended up married to him. When I met him a few months after my 19th birthday, I was fully intending to move to New York City after I graduated college. Gah. The strange little decisions we make which end up influencing our entire life path. Give your heart to the geek’ stay in Green Bay Wisconsin. Luckily no one ever put it to me that way when I was 19. He’s going to Atlanta for something like 21 hours next week. He leaves on Wednesday, back on Thursday, and I leave for JournalCon on Friday. Busy jetsetting week at Chez Weetabix.

I’m totally overwhelmed by what I have to accomplish before I leave. I must somehow finish my swag project. I must pack. I must load several things on my laptop from my home computer. I must print out a list of the stores in which I want to shop. I must figure out which entry I’m going to read during the readings. I should at some point actually PRACTICE reading that thing, because it must fit in a specific time limit (five minutes, I believe) and also because I’m contemplating reading the Uterus entry, and I want to see if I can pull it off without sounding schizophrenic or feeling weird calling myself a ‘fat pasty white feminazi who hates babies’ (although that’s still possibly my favorite line ever), and while I do tend to write the way I talk, I also write in these incredibly long and complicated sentences (usually with parentheticals that quite possibly go on for entirely too long) and while it is fine for the average reader to comprehend at their own pace, my rushed style of speaking combined with what will likely be nervousness at public speaking and being at JournalCon in itself, this might be a more difficult task that it might seem on the surface and I very well might run out of breath entirely and collapse, undoubtedly garnering myself a mention in nearly everyone’s journal as the poor pathetic fat girl who fainted at the podium. Gah!

Ok, and now for the best damn piece of gossip I’ve heard in a year.

It’s probably wrong that I take so much absolute joy in this. It’s probably completely wrong and it reflects on how I’m an immoral person and have a heart that’s two sizes too small. I would probably take the roast beast and cackle while I was doing it. Oh yes. Considering that I keep bursting into complete and utter gigglefits thinking about this, I am most certainly going to hell.

Anyway’ the dirt:

You’ll all remember my good friend Jasmine? She of lovely smiles and Jennifer Love Hewitt resemblance? Well, the lovely Jasmine has recently been the apparent victim of an identity theft.

It seems that several months ago, someone made an appointment at an upscale and trendy beauty salon under Jasmine’s name for some rather expensive procedures. This woman went in for the appointment and when it came time to pay, she said ‘I left my checkbook in the car.. I’ll be right back.’ And never returned.

Then again in June, the woman made another appointment at another salon under Jasmine’s name. This time, she walked with several hundred dollars of vitamins. Jasmine found out about it from HER salon, when her stylist heard the other stylists talking about what a deadbeat Jasmine was at the local hair stylist saloon or wherever the hair stylists commune with themselves, waxing poetic about spiral perms or some such. To her credit, Jasmine’s stylist stuck up for her and said ‘Oh no, not OUR Jasmine. She always pays. You must be mistaken.’

So Jasmine herself went to this other salon and the people there identified that she was indeed NOT the person who had walked out without paying for several hundred dollars worth of services and vitamins. She also worked with the police and provided alibis for both incidents. The police asked if Jasmine knew of anyone who might have a grudge against her. Jasmine had no clue’ many people MIGHT carry grudges against her but she didn’t really know of anyone off hand.

This is where the plot thickens. Like a fine congealed pork gravy.

A few weeks ago, the Faux Jasmine went back to the SAME SALON, where the SAME PEOPLE were working. They recognized her. Stupidly, because perhaps they were too busy sniffing hair dye or something, they did not call the police. They did not ask her any questions. They instead left the room so that she was alone with these prized vitamins. And she walked out with more vitamins. That time, however, someone had a clue and ran out to catch a description and partial license plate on her vehicle.

Pork gravy. Right here. Get a biscuit to sop it up. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

The police then ran the description and the partial plate. They had an easy job of it because the perp (see how I work in very cool criminal lingo there? It kind of enhances the drama, non?) had a very special issue of license plate. The same special issue of license plate that I have on my car. No, don’t worry. That little bit of trivia was just a red herring.

So they found someone with the matching bit of license plate and make/model/color car. They dispatched a cop to interview the subject at her house. The subject, of course, denied it. So the cop called Jasmine back because he was suspicious and wanted to run the name of the suspect by her, to see if it rang any bells.

May I have a drumroll please?

People’ god, I’m giggling again’. It was my Aunt Bruhilda. Yes. That Aunt Brunhilda. The one who starves her kids. The one who used to make me do forty-five minutes of aerobics before she’d let me eat breakfast when I was eight. Now, if you’ve had the unbelievable tenacity to go back and read my archives, you’ll know that there was a family turmoil about two years ago that centered around my Aunt Brunhilda and my sister, Mo. It’s all an elaborate web of juicy family skeletons, right there. Here’s the scoop in a nutshell: Aunt Brunhilda used to babysit for my niece Abigail and Jasmine’s daughter when they were roughly 18 months old. One morning, Jasmine walked in to drop off her daughter at Aunt Brunhilda’s house. She found 18 month old Abby sitting there and no adult anywhere. Jasmine called out. Nothing. Jasmine sat down and waited with the two babies. About five or ten minutes later, Aunt Brunhilda drives up. Jasmine went to work and told Mo about the incident. They both removed their daughters from Aunt Brunhilda’s care that evening. Aunt Brunhilda’s excuse was that she was going to drive Skinny and Malnourished to the end of the block, so she called down to her husband, who was supposedly in the basement, that he should come up and watch Abby. What we think really happened: her husband, who works a swing shift, didn’t hear Jasmine yelling because he was in the basement sleeping, and Brunhilda really drove her children all the way to school, because honestly, who only drives their children to the end of the block on a cold and miserable morning when they could just as easily drive them the rest of the way to school? Not that we’re dealing with a sane person here, but still.

The entire family rifted over this. This summer, Abigail’s fourth birthday, was the first time my Mafia Grandma and Aunt Drusilla have attended since the incident. Aunt Brunhilda still will not attend. What is more, two years ago, she told me that if she ever saw Jasmine, she would have probably had to walk up and slap her for causing so many problems. So I’m certain that in her psychoworld, she felt she was getting back at Jasmine for outing her as something less than the perfect June Cleaver that she pretends to be, because apparently she felt that she could excuse the fact that her teenage children looked prepubescent and stunted, but she couldn’t as easily excuse herself for leaving an 18-month-old crawling baby alone for ten minutes, regardless of where her husband was supposed to have been.

It’s entirely wrong that I am so gleefully watching this go down. Apparently, the police haven’t charged her yet because they’re waiting for Jasmine to make a statement or do some wicked copfu sting operation involving vitamins and pedicures, possibly.

In all honesty, I hope that this forces her into some counseling. She’s obviously unbalanced somehow and it’s been so quietly pervasive in that she’s a perfect suburban housewife who is strikingly attractive and has a perfect thin body and therefore cannot be a nutjob. But we know the truth. Perhaps in my family, you get to pick between a screwed up head and a fat ass.

I swear to God, my gene pool is filled with Draino.

How about Holly Rum-N-Nog?

Have you entered the Banner Ad contest? Have you? Because all the cool people are doing it. And you’re cool. Right? So make me a banner ad and then send it to me before Saturday and I’ll put it on my page. Come on. You know you want to.

Sometimes I have nothing to say, and yet this entire irrepressible urge to say it anyway.

Today, I did fuckall at lunch. I drove around and listened to one of my mix CDs from summer, that one titled “Grrl on Girl Action”. Every song on it features women singers. Everything from Pink to Fisher to Salt N’Pepa to Fiona Apple to En Vogue to Veronica Martell to Vanessa Carlton to The Beautiful South to the Indigo Girls. It’s a very strange CD and yet somehow extremely comprehensive and put together in its eccentricity. I contemplated the little spots of amber and gold in the trees to where my low rider boot cut jeans are to whether or not I should stop at Starbucks and get some mocha. I haven’t had caffeine in I-don’t-even-know-how-many days and don’t really want to get back on that caffeine trip. I know that my Diet Coke addiction somehow hampers Operation Hottie. I don’t know how, but I know that it does. Perhaps it has something to do with sodium or metabolism or how Nutrasweet makes you crave sugar. I dunno. I do know that once I get it out of my system, I do much better and am not as hungry all the time. That having been said, I’ve been sleeping something like twelve hours a day, which can’t be all that good either.

Today, I was talking with Chauffi and he mentioned that he was dressed in red and green and looked like a Christmas elf, which prompted me to give him an elf name. Jingle Merryfeet. I just adore that. Jingle Merryfeet. The elf does not need a prop because his name is Jingle Merryfeet. He then donned me Tinsel Snowbottom, even though I am in elf-cognito, wearing navy sport pants, a white t-shirt and New Balance running shoes. Not that I run anywhere ever. Maybe if I have been on a long conference call, drinking water, and am afraid I won’t make it to the john. Maybe I’m on the Elf Intramurals, training for the Candy Cane Relay and the Chimney Sprint. Nothing like a little chubby sex elf. Gah. That didn’t sound right at all. Like some elf porn. Oddly enough, I think someone sent me a link once to Elvish porn. That must be big with the guys who’ve gone through three copies of Lord of the Rings and think Piers Anthony is quite possibly the Messiah.

Esteban will be hopefully flying home from NYC tonight, provided that he can successfully make it through O’Hare. He’s not feeling optimistic. He comes home complete with $250 in travel vouchers from the botched first leg of his trip, so he’s in fairly good spirits. So am I because this means that I will be diligently saving toward going someplace warm this winter. I haven’t decided where, but I do know this: it will be somewhere tropical with places for me to snorkel. Hopefully without jellyfish although I likely won’t be that lucky. Perhaps someplace where they worship curvy round kind of girls. Unlike someplace like Florida, where jutting bones and angular asses are all the rage. Nothing against Florida, mind you, but I’m pretty sure that asses shouldn’t have corners. That’s all I’m saying.

Proof that I am exactly 8 years old sometimes: today we got notification that a sausage company’s line had gone down. So we received this entire series of emails with the theme “X Sausage has gone down. We will notify you when it is back up.” “X Sausage is up again.” And I laughed, thinking of the technicians who had to say “Oh no! What are we going to do to get the X Sausage up! Get your best men on that!”. It was a turgid sausage problem of epic proportions.

I have no right in society to call myself an adult.

Tell me your elf name in the comments section.

The duck does not have other props.

From Suein Hwang’s Wall Street Journal column:

Aflac has issued guidelines for every use of its spokesduck. The word “duck,” for instance, is barred from sales agents’ e-mail addresses, as is any mention in company publications not generated by the Columbus, Ga., headquarters. Duck costumes are verboten, as are duck Christmas ornaments (requested by some employees). An edict bars the duck from holding or wearing anything.

The duck “walks around to different places and tries to get people’s attention by shouting ‘Aflac!,’ ” explains (an Aflac) company spokeswoman. “The duck does not have other props.”

Does that crack (or quack) anyone else up? “The duck does not have other props.” What a beautiful sentence. Right there. It is perhaps the most beautiful sentence I’ve encountered in… well, at least eight hours.

From the same article: “If the duck became all things to all people it would dilute his distinctiveness,” she explains. “It wouldn’t be the best thing in the long run for the integrity of the symbol.”

I think I want that job… public relations for a duck. Oh, no wait… it’s not a duck, it’s a symbol. Gah. People are so strange.

Speaking of “Gah”, apparently it’s an infectious word. I can’t claim to have originated it. I’m sure I saw it elsewhere because I’m terribly unoriginal as a rule. However, I’m a proud carrier of the “Gah”. The Gah does not have other props.

It just doesn’t work as well without the word “duck”, non?

In lighter notes, a strange thing last night. I actually wrote a poem, which I haven’t done in months and months. I’m not a poet, really. I am entirely dedicated to prose. I don’t think in poems, the way my classmates in college did. I have to be in a special mood to write that way, but apparently, the mood struck me and I cranked one out yesterday, then kept going back to it throughout the night to reread it, just to make sure that I really did it. Maybe I’ll send it to the notify list people, as one of those strange ambiguous perks of being on the notify list. But I think it’s significant, not in that it was a particularly brilliant poem, which it wasn’t, but in that it is a side effect that I’m beginning to think more like a writer and less like a corporate drone. And I think this diary has a lot to do with it. Even though I rarely allow myself to use a serious tone on this thing, it still exercises the mental muscles. And the feedback is incredible. Sometimes I feel like Sally Field, shouting “You like me, you really like me!”, but it’s hard to express the self-doubt that all writers at one time seem to feel. Hemingway had his alcohol, Fitzgerald had his opiates and I apparently have my diary about boobs and farts. It’s a good thing. Thank you for allowing me that.

Ok, it wasn’t a lighter note. It was a big sappy “I love you guys!” note. Carry on.

Esteban has gone on a business trip to New York. He’ll be there for a big twenty four hours and then back home. Such a jetsetter. I hope he’s going to be ok. I miss him already. He made us prepackaged pizza burgers and oven fries last night for dinner, but then we both declared that the pizza burgers tasted like overly processed pork products and had a decidedly “school lunch” quality. It wasn’t his fault, though, as I purchased them, thinking that it would be an easy meal for a night when we didn’t want to deal with cooking. Tonight, I’m having an Operation Hottie meal of grilled salmon, steamed green beans and leftover risotto (if I can stand it) with a spring green salad because I can eat like an adult when he’s not around. Or I might end up with a bowl of Special K Red Berries. Because, frankly, that is just yum.

Did you watch Buffy last night? Did you? I was giddy… absolutely giddy. I clapped my hands like I needed to ride a special small bus to go to school. James Marsters with curly fluffy N’Sync hair? Not necessary. James Marsters with the little pouchy tummy? Thank god someone has fed that man a cheeseburger. And I think the new principal is grrowwwlll…. even though he might be eeeeeevil. Or just evil. And looks a bit like Tiger Woods. But that goatee….. groowwlll. He can keep me in detention any time. Preferably with handcuffs.

I’d like to announce a new Weetabix contest. It comes to my attention that I have a bunch of banner ads to run. My good friend Chauffi has recently redesigned his diary and is now running his banner ad on Diaryland (if you see it, click it and make him smile!) and now I feel like a slacker.

This is my old banner ad, which utilizes my adorable niece Abigail. I like it a lot but it’s a bit tired, as it’s over a year old.

Thus, a contest, because I am indeed a slacker. I know that I have some incredibly talented and creative readers. Send me a banner ad for my web page by Saturday, Sept 28! I will post the entries, along with links to the creator’s diary (if applicable). I will then solicit opinions from readers, which I may or may not use in my decision of which one to run. However, I will definitely use one of them as a link to my page, and for the duration of the banner’s run (probably something like 20,000 views) I will put the banner ad at the bottom of my page with a link to your diary.

Yeah, I know, kind of a cheesy prize, but it’s a cheesy contest because I’m a lazy slacker tool. But this needn’t be difficult. The duck does not have any other props. It just waddles around shouting Aflac! Brilliant!

You’ll be in my heart… like a lump of congealed chicken fat that even a bucket of oat bran couldn’t break down.

Oh dear Lord where to begin?

It’s so very hard to keep a diary and entertain tens of readers when your life is as boring as sin.

I haven’t made the cookies yet. I was planning on it tonight, but instead Esteban hauled me to the Maul (TM K.Lo) so that he could have a professional portrait taken for his job. Being a typical Esteban thing, he has procrastinated so entirely badly that the magazine he writes for needs the pictures TOMORROW.

Thus, the only place that could do it fast enough was a place in the Maul that specializes in taking pictures of the children born out of wedlock to teenage mothers. All of the employees were wearing beanies. My heart bled for them.

I felt like scum because Esteban was dressed impeccably, in his grey suit, perfectly pressed white shirt and designer tie, while I was standing there looking like some kind of scary girl in my rock star jacket (which doubles as my raincoat, since it’s pleather and waterproof), mussed hair, big clumpy Doc Martens, and v-neck sweater which has gotten baggy and reveals a bit more cleavage than I usually feel comfy with. Oh, and my grey Ass Splinter pearls and even they couldn’t counteract the Cheap Skank Ho quality of the rock star jacket.

After about five minutes of children wailing and mothers yelling ‘If you don’t stop hitting the nice photographer, I’m going to sell you to the Irish gypsies!’, I left him there. It was probably a good thing, since I had this extreme urge to say ‘We’re here to get little Estebanie’s 32nd birthday pictures done!’ in my most Soccer Mom tone of voice.

I browsed at a jeweler and found a lovely diamond and platinum solitaire on sale for a mere thousand dollars. They seemed quite eager to sell it to me, so maybe I wasn’t as White Trash as I thought. They finally tried to get me to haggle and I told them that I’d think about it for $600, which was the honest truth. They seemed so disappointed. Maybe I smell like a big-ticket impulse shopper to the sales weasels. Well, actually, the Ass Splinter pearls WERE a big-ticket impulse buy, so perhaps they were right.

I then went to the cookie store and purchased four cookies, then returned and gave them to Esteban. Well’ most of them. I ate one. I’m not a saint, people! Besides, if you can’t have cookies on Operation Hottie, then it’s just Operation Suck.

I unclogged the drain in our bathroom sink yesterday. Esteban fills it with former pieces of Esteban and then gets a rather bewildered look on his face when it clogs. He then blames me, because I stand over the sink for hours at end, washing my face, brushing my teeth, plucking the non-existent woman facial hairs (I say non-existent because there is NO WAY that I have a mustache, oh no sirree’ that’s from that Nesquick that I drank a minute ago. And those Groucho Marx things happening above my baby blues? Just a trick of the lighting. A mere shadow, really.) therefore I must be the guilty sink clogger. Honestly, the only thing I put down that sink is my minty fresh toothpaste spit. If anything, I would think it would help keep the drain clean, as it is Tarter Control.

Helpful hint of the day: if the organic enzyme drain unclogger thingy that costs $15 per bottle doesn’t take care of the drain, try plunging it while you’re soaking wet wearing a towel because you want to brush your teeth. It works. I know. I was rather surprised too.

Then I felt all sorts of Amy Wynn after my successful drain declogging, I decided to attack the toilet seat. You see, Esteban cracked our toilet seat awhile back and I sent him, as punishment for the repeated pinches in my hiney, to fetch a new one. Because he is Esteban and has a love for all things tacky, he purchased a plastic padded seat. I suppose if LayZBoy made one that reclined, he would have carted that home instead. This would have been fine except that he turned the damn thing blue somehow. I don’t know how. I suspect it was from wearing new jeans without washing them first. I don’t know. I do know that it looked like Papa Smurf had spent a rather constipated afternoon in our lavatory. Took almost a whole container of bleach wipes to get rid of that too.

So about three months ago, I purchased a new toilet seat. Solid oak with brass hingie things. It’s a lovely toilet seat. Very classy, as toilet seats go. I expect that it will make a lovely Clunk sound as we lower it to prevent Tilly from drinking poop water. And being Double-Standard Girl, considering the fact that I have a Gloria Steinem book sitting in the bathroom, I declared that Esteban should replace the toilet seat. Because now he’s good at it. And also the fact that I’m fairly certain he is responsible for the indescribable boy pee schmeng that is constantly appearing in the general vicinity of the toilet.

Toilet. That’s a funny word, isn’t it? Toilet. Teehee. It’s one of those words that the more you read it, the more foreign it begins to look. Toilet.

But because Esteban is King Procrastinator, even worse than I, the lovely oak and brass toilet seat sat in our unfinished kitchen, which is apparently where all of our good intentions and abandoned home improvements go to die. Thus, after clearing the sink and brushing my teeth, I took one look at the plastic trailer toilet seat and said ‘ENOUGH! I HAVE THE POWER! I can FIX this toilet! I am woman! I can use tools! If I can be expected to push a baby through my cervix, I can fix a goddamn toilet seat.’

To paraphrase Deb: the plastic toilet seat is not my bitch.

Swathed in only a towel, I put on my new plastic gloves, a lovely retro yellow with reinforced red hands of death, and began to try to unscrew the plastic cheapass screws. They didn’t unscrew. They didn’t screw. I opened the oak seat and looked at its accoutrements. There were screws that apparently came out the top. I pried the plastic pieces off the top. They wouldn’t come off. I realized that I could use a screwdriver and pry the top off. After much searching, I found a Phillips head in the pen cup on Esteban’s desk (crazy Esteban logic’ don’t ask). Great! I used that to pry off the little things hiding the screw tops. Off they came’. To reveal standard slotted plastic screws. Fine. I searched for a standard screwdriver. I found a little itty bitty one because my husband fixes computers for a living. No big ass screwdriver. By that time I was sweating, even though I had just taken a damn shower. I no longer cared about the blue plastic toilet seat. I didn’t even care if it had a big picture of damn Richard Petty on it, with Tide symbols on it. I didn’t care if I had to use a five-gallon bucket in the garage at that point. The entire thing just seemed way too hard and I finally admitted it: The damn $12 toilet seat kicked my ass.

Mofo toilet seats. Sometimes you just got to admire the French, the way they pee in those little holes in the ground. I’m just saying.

In other news, that stupid Phil Collin’s song from the Tarzan movie seems to be haunting me. I keep turning it disgustedly whenever it appears on my radio, but it continues to multiply on every channel. I’ve ended up listening to the weather reports of every large town in Wisconsin on NPR, just to escape it. At lunch today, it began playing again and I thought “Ok, maybe it’s karma that I should just listen to it and then it will stop repeating like some horrible telltale you’ll-be-in-my-heart.” But I couldn’t. I could not do it. I can’t think about Phil Collin’s arms keeping me safe and warm. I can’t think about how if I just look over my shoulder, he’ll be there in puppet form, like in the Genesis video for “Land of Confusion” and it just makes me want to scream “GAH!!!!!!!!!! GAH GAH GAH!”.

So anyway, there it is. Phil Collins is just wrong. But I still like “Throwing It All Away” from the Invisible Touch album. I’m just saying.

Well, this entry has gone nowhere fast, so I’m outtie.

In the Kitchen with Weetabix

For the last couple of days, I have been an absolute cooking PHENOMENON. Or in the words of Paula Absurd’ Feh Nomenon.

Earlier this week, I made chili and it was divine. We ate it on Tuesday and Wednesday night when I discovered that while my mouth adored the combination of ground sirloin, beans (kidney and northern and black beans, oh my!), tomato juice, Bowl of Red (which is a local chili powder brand that I highly recommend if you ever should see it in your supermarket), garlic, black pepper, cumin and lemon juice (yes, lemon juice’ don’t ask)’ my gastrointestinal system did not. I subjected Esteban to a bedtime tummy gurgle that lasted for at least three straight minutes. It was like that scene in League of their Own where Tom Hanks is peeing, only we had the added suspense of finding out if the gurgle would turn into a gimongous bottom burp.

That’s British slang for fart. Because I’m trying to keep things classy and stuff.

Thus, on Thursday night, Esteban was quite content to go for a hat trick with the chili, while I declined, opting to play Iron Chef in the kitchen and get myself something to eat before Survivor started. I ended up chopping some free garden tomatoes gleaned from a filing cabinet at work and mixing them with garlic and a drizzle of olive oil. Then I seeded and roasted a red and yellow bell pepper under the broiler. Next, I put three tortillas on a cookie sheet and spritzed them with my olive oil Misto. I then layered the tomatoes, the chopped roasted peppers. Then I realized that I only had Queso Blanco cheese, which is Mexican and it wouldn’t quite be a pizza that way, so I sprinkled some lime juice and cilantro on the tortillas before crumbling up the cheese. Then I broiled until the cheese was getting soft (Queso Blanco doesn’t really melt easily). God damn! It was so very good. I could only eat two tortillas and I did end up burning my finger but it was so very worth it. I was very impressed with myself and also that it was conducive to Operation Hottie.

On Friday, Esteban and I caught dinner out, but when I went home, Mo called me and seemed upset that I had already eaten. She didn’t have Abby this weekend and wanted to watch movies at my house. I offered to make her some food if she just wanted to come over. She was entirely too excited about the prospect. I warmed up some chili (I made a LOT) and also, buffeted by my fabulous tortilla venture from the previous night, made her some quesadillas (she doesn’t like peppers or tomatoes) in a frying pan. She was quite happy with the resulting meal at Chez Weetabix.

Yesterday, we helped a friend move. I hurt my back in a rather spectacular bout of idiotic gymnastics and wanted to go swimming afterward but Ward and June were nowhere to be found, so instead I went grocery shopping. I’ve been thinking about replacing some of the dry goods in our pantry (sugar, flour, corn starch, etc), so I went to the local cheap ass place, where you have to bag your own groceries and they only take cash. Hate that place but it is definitely cheaper. Ended up with a huge heavy bag of dry goods, butter, milk, peanut butter, etc, for $20. Then I decided that I wanted to make cookies. Not any cookies. Wonderful Martha Stewart-esque sugar cookies in the shape of fall leaves, with lovely orange and yellow frosting. Because when you’ve got a sore back, there’s nothing better than standing at a counter which is too short and using a rolling pin for hours on end. Once I got home and began to put things away, which included bending, I scrapped the cookie-making plan. Mostly because I was pretty sure that I could either make dinner or make cookies, but definitely not both. So I thawed some chicken breasts and proceeded to sit on our recliner with a heating pad. God, I’m so middle-aged before my time. Where are my liver pills, I ask you? Where? My name should be Arlene. Gah.

Esteban then came home from work and brought me Advil and turned up the surround sound because I didn’t want to move. He also took directions in marinating what I had decided would be Tandoori chicken, although my directions had to be exceptionally precise (‘In the pantry on the left side at eye level’ no, MY eye level not yours’ there’s an orange jar’ no, not the bar-b-cue sauce!’). Then I hobbled into the bedroom and laid flat while I cleaned up my TiVo. I was disappointed that they didn’t have the Two Fat Ladies caught this morning, but apparently they had them on Tuesday night. Ricky Fitts, my TiVo, caught it for me and wouldn’t you know that I had never seen that one. I heart Ricky so very much.

It took about an hour and a half of lying there without moving before I could mull up enough gumption to get up and finish dinner. Ironically, I’ve been purchasing blueberries and had about four pints in the refrigerator and a quart in the freezer from last season. I tossed the frozen berries with the oldest pint of fresh ones with some flour and sugar. Then I used a pre-made batch of ‘Dutch Crumb Topping’ that I had stored in the pantry in 2000 from a particularly over exuberant Dutch Apple pie making venture, and blended it with half a stick of butter using my pastry blender. Oh my poor pastry blender. It was so very expensive and it’s so well made. It probably had such high hopes when it was made, hopes that it would be used and cherished by some pastry diva. It had wanted to make pie crusts that would be so tender and flaky, oh yes. But instead, I bought it and stuff it in my gadgets drawer, where it nicked my expensive silicon spatula in frustration because I use the spatula almost every time I cook. When searching for the pastry blender, I actually missed it the first time, went to another drawer, didn’t find it there and went back to look again. It was right in front of my nose. I think I had forgotten what it looked like.

Then I set about making risotto. Because plain white rice wasn’t cool, no. I had to make something where you had to use white wine and chicken stock and SAFFRON. Crazily enough, I actually had everything I needed for that as well, although I did end up using a blush zinfindel, making the rice a bit pink, but that was overcome once the saffron started doing its job. But what I didn’t realize is that you had to stir risotto for something equivalent to four weeks. You have to keep coaxing it to take in more chicken broth. I started having conversations with it. ‘Come on, be a friendly Arborio. You want this chicken broth. You LOVE this chicken broth. Soak in it. Love it. SUCK IT UP YOU RICE BITCH!’

The result: incredibly creamy artful rice. With no flavor whatsoever. Perhaps I shouldn’t have threatened it so. My tandoori chicken was too dry because I stupidly followed the instructions and baked it far too long, although Esteban volunteered that it rocked. Sadly, my risotto has been punished and sent to live on the bottom shelf in the refrigerator where neither of us will touch it and it will grow green fuzz and perhaps a slime mold if it is lucky. And it probably still won’t smell or taste like anything.

The blueberry crisp was fabulous. I used Martha Stewart’s style, which included the addition of flour. That made it far thicker than my normal crisps, which I actually sometimes use instead of syrup on my waffles. This was more like a blueberry pie sans crust. Esteban was inspired to run out for some frozen custard (there went Operation Hottie’ right there) to go with the crisp and I have to say that it completely made the meal.

Esteban : And blueberries are very high in anti-oxidants!

Weetabix: You’ve been watching commercials again, haven’t you.

Even though my back still hurts and now the kitchen is full of dirty pans from cooking for the last three days, I still have this urge to make cookies. I’d tell you what’s causing all this but you already now. Damn it. Next thing you know, I’ll be churning my own butter.

Mofo nesting bullshit.

Oooh, while I was writing this entry, Esteban did the dishes, made me breakfast of whole wheat toast and his perfect scrambled eggs, and then ran out just to fetch me a Sunday paper. Gosh. Sometimes it just doesn’t get any better than than… a crisp fall morning when the sun weakly attempts to counter the nip in the air, a plate of steaming impossibly fluffy scrambled eggs, a glass of orange juice, and sitting on a lovely heating pad while reading the paper and enjoying how nice and toasty it makes your bum. Lovely. Absolutely lovely.

I just may be making cookies for him after all.

MallWart: Your source for cheap plastic crap

So my JournalCon swag idea.

I told you all about how I had decided against the temporary tattoos and the little yoyos with decoupage Weetabix paraphernalia on them? Because that was too hard or sketchy on whether or not people would actually want them? So I came up with a new idea:

Play Doh.

Yes. Play Doh. I decided to get little tubs of Play Doh and stick my URL on them. Because who doesn’t like Play Doh? Communists, maybe. Play Doh rocks. You can mold it. You can squeeze it and make lovely little shell shapes. You can smell it and be automatically five years old again. You can eat it if you’re really desperate. I’m rather pleased with myself, actually. Undoubtedly, the Galleria hotel will be less pleased with me when they are picking little multi-colored nubs of Play Doh out of their carpets, but that’s not my problem.

I investigated online. It appeared as though you could get a ten pack of miniature tubs of The Doh for $4.99. I’m thinking that I would need 7 packs or so, but I didn’t want to wait for shipping. So I called our local Toys’R’Expensive and inquired about their Play Doh selection. After much consternation, the Toy ‘Tard on the other side of the phone determined that they did indeed have the Itty Bitty Dohs for $5.99 a pack. “Do you have price matching? I saw it online for $4.99” I asked. “Yeah, but you’d have to pay for shipping.” Mofo Toy Tard. Then I called MallWart. To his credit, the MallWart Tard quickly was able to survey that they did indeed have a 10 pack of very very small Doh for $3.97 and a 12 pack of medium size Doh for $4.84. That’s another thing I hate about MallWart. They try to get psychological with the pricing of things. As though stupid people have figured out that $3.99 is really $4, but $3.97… why, that’s just $3 and change! Gah.

So I went to MallWart directly from work. I hate MallWart. I hate it with a passion. I hate their parking lots, the way that people drive willy nilly, rampantly ignoring the painted lines. I hate how people seem to lose their minds in that place, as though the proximity to Low Low Prices makes them crazy, CRAZY! I hate how all the children in the place seem to have perpetual Kool-Aid mustaches. I hate how they squish the aisles with displays and you can’t maneuver because some Nascar-wearing tool is standing there scratching his head over some Sam’s Choice vaginal lubricant. I just hate it. It takes about six months or so to forget how much I hate it and stupidly try to shop there again. I just don’t know how some people are able to shop there on a regular basis.

I went directly to the toy aisle, avoiding some child who was, I kid you not, running around Health and Beauty Aids barefoot in only a diaper. There I found that the MallWart Tard had confused the two packs. There were 12 itty bitty Dohs in a pack and 10 slightly larger mini Dohs for $4.84. Then I noticed the full size Play Dohs were $1.50 for four. I could get twelve full size tubs for $4.50. It would be easier to turn into Weetaswag and it was just that more generous. Sure, it would be way heavier and far more bulky but it was a FULL LEGITIMATE CAN OF PLAY DOH! How much would I rock out JournalCon? So very much. I would be That Fat Play Doh Girl, only I’d work that nickname. I’d make it sing. People would see me and say “Hey! Play Doh Girl with the Chubby Tink on it! Lay some Doh on me, baby!” and I’d happily oblige. Oh, it’s going to be grand. Just grand!

Of course, the other side of this is that I’ll be schlepping this heavy sack of Play Doh tubs around, begging people “Here! Take some Play Doh” because that shit will be so heavy. And I’ll start to sweat. And no one wants their Doh pre-moistened. Because that is just ick.

So I quickly did the math… 4 tubs of Doh per pack… probably a pound or more… I’ll need about 18 packs. I started loading 4-packs into my cart until I had every full-size tub of PlayDoh in MallWart. 14 packs. That was it. I raped MallWart of all their PlayDoh. I felt so dirty. I could almost hear the wails of little white trash children “Mama! Whar’s all da Play Doh, Mama? Why did dat fat girl take all dah Play Doh, Mama? What we going to eat for da supper now, Mama? I was gonna make Daddy a Play Doh gun and bring it to him in prison.”

Did you hear that sound? That was the sound of Satan clearing out the Evil Bitch suite in Hell for me.

So yesterday was my first day of the “Late Hours” that come with my new position. I’m all West Coast hours now. It’s strange. It’s like I’m in college again, waking up whenever I feel like it, not having the rush to get ready in the morning. Tilly scampered over the bed this morning with frantic MEOWs because I suspect that she’s worried that I’m going to be late for work. Apparently, she didn’t read the memo.

As I was leaving for work yesterday, I got a phone call from my friend Mary Kaye. Her girlfriend Angel has asked for her hand in marriage and MK has accepted her proposal. MK called to ask if I’d be her Matron of Honor. I’ve accepted but now that I’m thinking about it, I have all these issues. First of all, wedding gear tends to look like absolute ass and I don’t have a body which lends itself nicely to satin ruffles and ass bows, although knowing Mary Kaye, the wedding attire will be all glam. Also I don’t think I like that title. Matron of Honor. It sounds so… matronly. As though I should have Librarian hair and crows feet and steel belted girdles locked in a death grip to a rather intimidating pair of support hose. I must suggest a new title.

Perhaps Mistress of Hotness.

Thankfully, the wedding will not be for at least a year so I have time to marinate on that. As always, feel free to use the comments section to make suggestions.

Have an uber weekend!

Fare thee well, Summer Slacker Girl. We hardly knew ye!

I have an announcement to make:

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Summer Slacker Girl has left the building.

And let me tell you how I have come to this conclusion:

  • I am at this very moment wearing socks.
  • I’m looking forward to cleaning the living room tonight because it makes me insane to sit in there and stare at Esteban’s garment bag on the sofa and Tilly’s little cat paw prints in the dust on the bottom shelf of the entertainment center. Insane!
  • I have begun to fantasize about neatly organized sock drawers, rather than a random Sock Lottery basket where I put all of the loose socks.
  • Just this afternoon, I thought to myself “I should buy a separate scrapbook to put my England pictures in” even though I am a year behind on my current scrapbooks and have an empty leather one to do my wedding pictures.
  • I have also decided that I must engage upon a JournalCon craft project so that I have swag to give away. I was going to do temporary tattoos of Chubby Tink and the Weetabix truck, but that seemed too hard. Then I was going to decopage blank yoyos with the Chubby Tink or Weetabix truck and possibly some complementary green or yellow glitter and the url, but that seemed even harder than making temporary tattoos. So now, I’ve got a new idea and have to bring it to fruition. And it will be fun. I’m excited. Far more excited than I have any right to be.
  • I started thinking about genealogy this morning. Specifically, taking my digital camera to a cemetary and snapping pictures of all the graves and then putting them up on the local genealogy site for my county. Because, you know, I’m a big genealogy dork sometimes. And it’s not enough that I’ve taken my own family tree back beyond the damn Mayflower into Braveheart William Wallace time periods, no, I must go onward, branch out further, like boats against the current, ever borne ceaselessly into the past…. or something.
  • Spending an evening in the pool now seems really boring.
  • Not to mention… cold.
  • It suddenly struck me at how heathen it was that we have only half a kitchen floor in our kitchen and have had only half a kitchen floor since April. And it pains me that I can’t go and special order my 50’s style floor tile until after JournalCon because I don’t want to be destitute.
  • My graduate school information packet exploded, absolutely exploded, in the back seat of my car. And it’s driving me crazy.
  • I actually thought about cleaning out our pantry yesterday. And I think I’m going to do it, too.
  • The linen closet too.
  • Both of them, actually.

I know. I’m completely horrified as well. I think I need some slacking therapy to offset this or I’m going to start handmaking my Christmas cards like I did last year. Because I want to be prepared. And now there are so many more of you that if I’m going to do another Christmas card exchange, I’m going to have to make a gazillion more cards. Gah! I’m trying not to think about it. I may hyperventilate.

Is it possible for someone to be brain dead and not even realize it?

Oh, wait, yes it is. Dubya is proof of that.

Seriously, though. I think I might actually have brain damage and should be hooked up to IV’s and tubes which ferry away my fluids and excrement quite tidily. Because that’s the only reason I can think of that I would have subjected myself to unnaturally hazardous footwear yesterday for no reason other than “they looked cute”.

Girls are dumb. Just in case you had forgotten. Girls are dumb and sometimes weird.

So my uncomfortable expensive and yet-got-for-cheap leather mules yesterday. I think I understand now what that whole foot binding thing is because I lived it yesterday. I mean, I had to psyche myself up every time I needed to go to the bathroom. “You can do it. It won’t be that bad. Think of how much better you’ll feel once you pee. Just think!” Every step needed to be slow and deliberate so that I wouldn’t pitch forward on the three inch heels. And then there was the mule issue. The backs of my feet kept slipping off the platform as the day went on. (Mules, for those of you who are not obsessed with footwear, are those shoes which look like shoes but they don’t have backs on them. Not to be confused with clogs, which are usually round and worn by lesbians, gardeners and scary men named Frank. That is not to say that lesbians do not wear mules. I happen to know that my best friend Mary Kaye owns several pairs of mules. Scary men named Frank might wear mules, but probably not.)

In the fifth grade, my mother allowed me to purchase a pair of red leather clogs with wooden bottoms that were all the rage in 1982. I wore them nearly every day, with outfits that did not necessarily lend themselves to red leather clogs. And then my Aunt Sharon asked Mo and I to fill the “Cute Little Girl” roles in her wedding. And somehow, through some crazy misguided fashion logic of my mother’s, I ended up wearing my red leather clogs with my knee length baby blue dress and white tights. I suspect that she just didn’t want to buy another pair of patent leather mary jane shoes. Imagine a wee Weetabix, clomping down the aisle to deliver the communion chalice. Imagine a wee Weetabix, clomping up the stairs in the naive to light the candles, so very proud of her red leather clogs. This is where adult children get their bitterness toward their mothers. Right there.

Carissa asked me to go to lunch with her and I almost said “Well, no thanks, as I plan to eat the three packets of saltines and the Wendy’s Chili Hot Sauce for lunch so that I don’t have to do any unnecessary walking.” Gah. Every step was planned and deliberate. I ended up walking with poise and elegance everywhere, instead of my normal goofy bubbly walk. My back started to ache because my butt was unnaturally thrust outward whenever I walked. Mo laughed at me, stating “I’ve never seen you walk in heels before”, thus inspiring confidence and grace with every step.

During my fifteen minute struggle to the peasant parking lot, during which I had an overwhelming urge to kick my shoes into the dumpster and then run to my car barefoot, past the entire building with its rows of windows, I decided that I’d never wear anything but sensible shoes ever again. I don’t care if I get mistaken for a senior citizen or a gym teacher. I don’t care if it means that I wear nothing but my Birkenstocks, my New Balances and my Doc Martens for the rest of my life. I’m just not going to stand it anymore.

I now understand why those little piggies went wee wee wee all the way home. Because someone stuffed them in mofo mules.

Silly Rabbit… Trix are for kids.

I’ll bet you’re just losing sleep at night, wondering what happened to the Nut saga.

Client: I don’t understand this question about the snack nuts.

Weetabix: Well, nuts are classified four ways. Nuts in cans, nuts in jars, nuts in bags and unshelled.

Client: What does ‘unshelled’ mean? Out of the shell?

Weetabix: Um…. no, actually in the shell. Like pistachios.

Client: Well, if it’s a nut, you’d eat it as a snack, right?

Weetabix: That’s the question. It would almost seem as though nuts in a bag would be baking ingredients…. like raw walnuts.

Client: In the shell?

Weetabix: No, out of the shell.

Client: Then what’s the difference between that and unshelled?

Weetabix: These are shelled.

Client: So they’re in the shell.

Weetabix: No, they’re out of the shell. Unshelled means that they’re in the shell.

Client: That’s… um… yeah.

Weetabix: It’s kind of reverse psychology. Like ‘unfrozen’.

Client: So I would think that snack nuts would be everything but the shelled stuff.

Weetabix: Even the raw nuts?

Client: Well…er…no. So just canned and unshelled.

Weetabix: Wait… unshelled is a snack now?

Client: No… just….whatever you said.

Weetabix: Canned and jars then?

Client: Is that what you think it should be?

Weetabix: Cans and jars. That’s snacky.

Client: I’m getting hungry now… for anything but nuts.

Weetabix: You’re unhungry?

Client: Why don’t they just call it “In the Shell”

Weetabix: Because the English language is a funny thing.

Client: Isn’t “in the shell” English?

Weetabix: I think nuts are classified by the people who write the IRS code.

Client: That makes perfect sense, actually.

Weetabix: I try.

Last night I went uber domestic. I went to the grocery store and purchased a whole tenderloin, a quarter pound of gourmet smoked bacon (which ended up to be five strips), some ground sirloin and some speckly mutant fruit (they’re marketed as “Dinosaur Eggs”, which is so disgustingly cute that I almost didn’t try them) which is a cross between a plum and an apricot. I then drove home, eating the mutant fruit with juice dripping down my face. Once home, I wrapped the bacon around the tenderloin fillets and then seasoned with Chicago Steak Seasoning. I also then made some mashed potatoes (the frozen kind… not bad, actually) with some fat free mushroom gravy and a pumpkin pie. While Esteban was grilling the steaks, I browned the ground sirloin and then made it into a big pot of chili, which then simmered for the remainder of the evening. Esteban is awash with excitement. His cooking wife has returned from her summer hiatus, even though it will probably mean that he gains the weight he’s lost over the summer.

I’m all excited though because it means that tonight, all I have to do is make some garlic cheese biscuits and perhaps prep some noodles for the chili (yes, in Wisconsin we are retarded and put pasta in our chili. I know. I know. Sacrilege and all that.) and I can devote myself to other more exciting ventures. Like laundry. Oh, and last repeat of Buffy. Whoot!

Speaking of laundry, today I’m a fashion train wreck. My bra isn’t behaving. The underwire keeps wanting to slip up until my boobs are squished under the wire in this weird quasi four-breast looking thing. Like I could nurse a litter of puppies.

What is more, while watching Donnie Darko, I painted my nails a nice autumnal serious Black Cherry. I’ve cut most of them off (ok, ok, I chewed three of them off during my stress freak out last week and then cut the rest because I looked like a psycho with seven perfect round ovals and three short little nubs right in a row. But apparently, I’ve gotten out of the habit of painting my nails with dark polish or I wasn’t paying attention because I look like I did it with a paint roller. I’ve got black/reddish paint down to my knuckles. It’s like I’m Betty Davis and I’m looking for that Redgrave chick. (I can’t remember which one though and I’m too lazy to look. Man, that metaphor totally fell in the toilet).

Then, to further polish my image, I’m wearing my new expensive-but-got-on-clearance-for-$14.99 leather mules. Good lord, I didn’t realize it but they have three inch heels. Three inch heels. People, I haven’t quite mastered zero inch heels and now I’m trying to walk around on three inch mules that don’t have backs so your heel kind of slips off the shoe and creates this stumbling epileptic gait that brings to mind a fawn trying to walk, only I’m not a lithe little fawn and I’ve been walking for 30 years now. But they do look cute.

When I’m sitting down, anyway.

WARNING: SPOILERS FOR DONNIE DARKO… DON’T READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW.

(Watching Donnie Darko)

Esteban: What is this movie about?

Weetabix: I don’t know.

Esteban: Then why did you NetFlix it?

Weetabix: Because Chromey said it was good and other people have said it was good and when I told Jake that I was expecting it, he told me to watch it while you were out of town and then watch it again when you came back home because it was just that good.

Esteban: Don’t be surprised if I get bored and walk away to play on the computer.

Weetabix: You won’t get bored. I looked it up on IMDB and it was rated like 20th of all indie movies. And that’s including stuff like American Beauty and Amadeus.

Esteban: American Beauty was sort of dumb.

Weetabix: I disagree.

Esteban: If this is just about this kid’s mental illness, I’m going to be playing Dungeon Siege in a few minutes.

Weetabix: I don’t know.

Esteban: Well, what did it say it was about?

Weetabix: I don’t know. I didn’t read it. I wanted to just experience it with no expectations.

Esteban: It’s going to be about this kid’s mental illness. I know it. What genre was it in?

Weetabix: I don’t know.

Esteban: It’s a horror movie isn’t it? I hate horror movies.

Weetabix: No. It’s not a horror movie.

Esteban: It’s certainly not a comedy. That guy looks familiar.

Weetabix: It’s Patrick Swayze. Euw. He didn’t age well. Not at all. His skin looks all…

Esteban: …Like a burn victim. Was it a drama?

Weetabix: I don’t know.

Esteban: Who else is in this?

Weetabix: I don’t know.

Esteban: You must know. You know everything. You’re a movie geek.

Weetabix: OH WOULD YOU JUST WATCH THE FREAKING MOVIE.

Esteban: Hostile! (A disembodied voice speaks to Donnie) Oh, I did NOT need that. I did NOT need that right now. That came right from the speaker right next to me.

Weetabix: GAH! I hope this isn’t a horror movie. That was creepy.

Esteban: I almost jumped out of my skin.

Weetabix: It was like the voice of a lizard. Eeek! WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT GUY!?!?

Esteban: This is so a horror movie.

Weetabix: Oh dear lord, it’s a big bunny. This is a remake of Harvey, only no Jimmy Stewart to make it ok.

Esteban: This is fucked up, right here. Who is that lady? His mom… who is that?

Weetabix:Um… Mary…. something… Mary McDonall? She played the First Lady in Independence Day.

Esteban: That’s it!

Weetabix:I’m impressed that you noticed her. You don’t normally notice such things.

Esteban: Because now I pick up on it. You’re turning me into a movie geek too. I’ve tried to resist because it’s just another geeky thing and I’ve got my geek plate full, but I just can’t help it because my wife is a movie geek.

Weetabix: OH DEAR LORD! That’s a big fucked up bunny! I don’t want to look at him!

Esteban: See. This is so going to be a horror movie. First the airplane part… then the fucked up mutant talking rabbit.

Weetabix: The bunny is going to stalk me in my nightmares. I’m going to open my eyes tonight and the bunny will be standing next to the bed and that’s when I’m going to pee my pants.

Esteban: Don’t in the waterbed! That rolls down hill. You can’t escape pee in a waterbed. I’m lower than you in the bed!

Weetabix: I’m covering my eyes. Wait, dude, that’s Noah Wyle.

Esteban: Hey… that guy…. where….?

Weetabix: Dr. Carter on ER.

Esteban: Yeah, that’s right. I’ll bet you ten dollars that Patrick Swayze ends up dead at the end of this.

Weetabix: Just watch.

Esteban: Ok, ok, now we’re going to find out that her stepfather’s name is Frank.

Weetabix: Just watch.

Esteban: Someone paid a lot of money for special effects on this thing. Oh… that’s it… he’s going to kill his parents. He’s going to kill the First Lady.

Weetabix: Watch. The. Movie. Oh… no bunny… please…. no more bunny! He’s like Skelator’s bunny rabbit.

Esteban: I wonder why they put this in 1988? What was the reason for it?

Weetabix: Bunny! GAH! It just doesn’t get any better. I can’t desensitize to the bunny!

Both: (watches movie)

Weetabix: GAH! I thought it would be better without the bunny mask, but it’s worse! It’s worse!!!!

Esteban: This is so fucked up.

Weetabix: That scene was just like American Werewolf in London.

Esteban: Movie geek. He’s going to hit the old woman now.

Weetabix: Would you stop trying to second guess it? You hate it when movies are predictable so stop trying to guess.

Esteban: (sticks tongue out)

Both: (watches movie)

Weetabix:When he does that possessed head tilt thing, it makes a little noise go off inside my brain that tells me to run away. (gets up and pauses movie) I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’ve got to potty. I tried to hold it but I just can’t. I’m going to burst.

Esteban: Don’t call it ‘potty’. That sounds retarded. Ha! That is so cute. You did the pee walk.

Weetabix: (from the bathroom) The what?

Esteban: The pee walk. When you sort of run-walk all bent over. It’s cute. Hey… are you reading? No reading!

Weetabix:I can’t pee. I’m having performance anxiety. I’m afraid of the bunny so I’m reading the Levenger catalog to get my mind off him.

Esteban: (whistles Camptown Races)

Weetabix: Now I can’t pee because you’re whistling.

Esteban: You didn’t have to go very badly then.

Weetabix: My bladder does not follow logic and reason.

Esteban: WOULD YOU HURRY UP!?

Weetabix: (finishes and flushes) I thought you didn’t want to watch this movie.

Esteban: Hurry.

Both: (watches movie)

Weetabix: Oh man.

Esteban: Wha….?

Weetabix: It’s the plane. The plane that his mom is on.

Esteban: That makes no sense.

Weetabix: No, it does. Time travel. They’ve been saying it all along.

Esteban: So, how does Frank… what? How could all of that happen if he went back and died?

Weetabix: That’s what Dr. Carter was saying. That if you could see your path and then change it, the path doesn’t happen. It’s the time travel paradox. But what I don’t understand is why he had to flood the school. That made no sense, unless he had to flood the school to be able to walk the girl home. But why would Frank have him do that? Why would Frank pull him out of the house before the airplane piece fell in because if Donnie would have died, then Frank and the girl would still be alive…. ouch. Now my head feels all full.

Esteban: Now I sort of want to watch football but I’m afraid that something weird will happen, like suddenly a second ball will appear out of nowhere, only to be thrown in the third quarter or something.

Weetabix: Or there will be a big scary skeleton bunny. Gah!

Esteban: What else did you get from NetFlix?

Weetabix: A movie called Vulgar. It has something to do with Kevin Smith’s group of friends, but I’m not sure.

Esteban: What genre is it?

Weetabix: I don’t know. It has a clown.

Esteban: So… a horror movie then.

Weetabix: Exactly.

It’s not having what you want, it’s wanting what you’ve got

So much to say.

I went to work for a while yesterday, as I detailed in yesterday’s entry, and then scootled home to take a shower and get ready for our evening of merriment. My very excellent friend Markus (the only person to ever write a guest entry on this page) is moving to North Carolina for a new job and yesterday was his going away party at Sports Bar #412. It was so very bittersweet. All of our friends were there. Esteban and I gave him a DVD player as a going away present, because we are gradually taking him kicking and screaming into the 21st Century. It’s slow going. I’m going to miss him so very much. He was the best man at our wedding and just a general sweetheart. I actually wasn’t long at the party, as I had to meet up with the Golf Chicas to go to the Sheryl Crow/Michelle Branch concert. In some ways, I’m torn up by the fact that I couldn’t spend every last minute with him, but I guess the final half hour before he left was pretty heart wrenching, with tears from many people and I know I would have turned into a big bawling basket case. While I am sad that he’s leaving, I’m also very happy for him because he’s got this excellent opportunity and I know he’s going to kick some major ass down there and besides, it’s not like we’re not going to visit him. So I wouldn’t have been crying for that reason, but I have a hard time watching people cry and it makes me cry. I’m a chain reaction weeper.

I did have a moral dilemma however. I was telling Joel that we were going to the Bad Bar after the concert and if he wanted, he should join us later. He said, with a very serious look on his face, ‘You’ve been going there a lot, haven’t you?’. Well’ five times in the last six months, but it IS a lot for me. I’ve drunk more alcohol in the last year than I probably did in the ten preceding it, but it’s still not too terrible. Then I remembered’ I had made a pledge a month back that I wouldn’t drink until Journal Con which is still two weeks away. Oh no! I ran outside in the rain and called my PA and asked him if it would make me a lush if I broke my resolve and drank at the Bad Bar. He assured me that I had proved my point and it wasn’t a big deal to have one night of merriment every now and then. Besides, I was already doing penance for the entire thing by standing in the freezing rain and talking with him. I heart my PA. He tells me everything I want to hear.

As it turned out, the very fun Eric and somewhat entertaining Jason would also be in attendance at the Bad Bar. Jason was sporting a five day growth of stubble on his head after he shaved it all off earlier this week. He was getting entirely too much pleasure out of having others rub his head, as if it were Buddha’s stomach. And Joel kept rubbing it as though he expected a genie to pop out. It was bizarre. I did not partake in the head rubbing. It was just too porno-erotic for me. I’m entirely too repressed sometimes.

So I skeedattled out of there before the waterworks started and met the girls. We were all dropping our cars off at the Bad Bar, thus setting the stage for some insane Bad Bar action later that evening. The concert was in a large tent with no chairs, so we secured a standing spot roughly thirty feet from the stage and proceeded to wait. Strangely enough, I channeled Carissa and began talking to a group of women next to me. I thought I recognized the tall one and then later asked them where they were going after the concert. They didn’t know, so I told them that we were going to The Bad Bar, to which tall girl replies ‘See’ I suggested that. I’ve been there one time before.’ And I said, ‘A few months ago?’ and she said ‘Yes!’ and then I said ‘Did you get your hair cut recently? Did it used to be shoulder length?’ ‘YES!’ ‘And you were with a man and another couple? And you were dressed really nicely?’ ‘YES!!!’ ‘I was there that night, remember I got you guys some candy necklaces!’ ‘Oh my gosh, how do you remember that?’

Yeah. Maybe I do go there too much.

Michelle Branch was awesome but very very tiny. Sheryl Crow was incredible. ‘Strong Enough’ was perfect and honestly my primary reason to see her in concert. The curse of the genetic mutants standing in front of me at concerts continues. Not only did I have a six-foot-six by three-foot-two man standing directly in front of me, but ahead and next to him was a six-foot tall woman wearing a cowboy hat. People, don’t wear cowboy hats to concerts. It just ain’t righteous. I don’t care if you’re wearing a gawdy shirt that shows women wearing cowboy hats. The shirt also had women wearing bikinis and you’re not wearing THAT to the concert, are you? Even Sheryl Crow wasn’t wearing a cowboy hat. I tried offering the linebacker in front of me $10 to take her hat and stomp on it, but he wouldn’t. Oh, and these girls behind us kept trying to get close to us so that we’d take a step up and they could get closer to the stage. At one point, one of their pelvis’ were touching my ass. I started randomly shifting position so that she would be afraid of getting stomped on. Seriously, if she were any closer to me, she would have been in front of me. I think I’ve had more space between my husband and me while we’re having sex. (There, Katrina from the Guestbook, r u happy?)

After two vodkas and lemonade, I was going to burst, so I went to the ‘bathroom’. It was basically a trailer dedicated to porta-potties. They flushed, much like an airplane toilet, but they were the smallest things I’d ever been in. Strangely enough, they had a bowl of potpourri on the counter where you washed your hands. They had five ladies stalls for 2500 people and the stalls were very very small. When I sat down, my knees were up against the door. What is more, the stalls were very shiny silver material and when I stood to pull up my pants I realized that it was acting like a mirror and I could see the reflection of the girl in the next stall pulling up her underwear and adjusting her thong. Sheryl Crow had just broken into her final song of ‘Soak up the sun’ and one of the girls in the potty was singing along. It was a very surreal moment.

Then we went off to the Bad Bar, where I proceeded to down roughly 36 ounces of Blind Russian (read: nothing but straight Kahlua, Vodka, and Baileys, with nothing but a little melted ice to dilute it) in the space of an hour and a half. I was thirsty and it tasted really good. That is my only excuse. Jason showed up roughly about the same time that I got all hip hip wiggleness and became the hottest damn chick in the whole damn bar. Unfortunately, we were not positioned by the Magical Brick Wall of Support, so I had to make due with the Lesser Pole of Uprightness.

Then I hit a big pocket of ‘Uh oh’. I fled to the bathroom and hid in a stall. I think the pizza we had for lunch on top of the mini corndogs I had at the Sport Bar weren’t reacting so well with my post Operation Hottie grease intolerant stomach, however when I sat down to use the toilet, all of the different angles made me dizzy. That’s always been my best barometer for my alcohol tolerance. If I can manage to sit down on the toilet without it being a theme park thrill ride, I’m usually good to go. However, this time you must be this tall or higher to board this ride and I was distinctly out of my league. Jason sent Carissa in to make sure I was ok. I’m not sure what they were going to do if I wasn’t. I wanted to tell her that I wasn’t puking, just needed some quiet time in the bathroom. And then I ran out of toilet paper and she got me some, telling me that she would do that for me because she’s so my friend. Yeah. I think Car was feeling her Blind Russians too.

Eric, Joel and Cheri showed up slightly after my triumphant return from my ten-minute sabbatical in the bathroom. I switched to ice water, figuring that I needed to dilute and hydrate, much to Eric’s annoyance, as he had planned to supplicate me with Malibu and Diet Cokes. Man. This diary is a curse sometimes. Seriously. It’s a good thing that I’m not a super hero because my arch nemesis would totally kick my ass exploiting my weaknesses.

Another surreal moment: my Golf Chicas met the rest of my friends for the first time. Eric introduced himself to Mary and said ‘So you’re the Mary that I’ve been reading about.’ And I guess she blushed (which, actually, she’s never done anything embarrassing on this page’ to my knowledge), to which Eric replied. ‘That’s ok. I swim.’ and she started to laugh. I could only sit there and giggle ashamedly. My poor friends. I don’t know why they put up with my shit. Probably because I am so very cute. Oh, and my hip hugger pants kept falling off my ass when I was dancing. Between the bathroom and the dancing, I was perhaps losing weight by the second. Take that, Weight Watchers. Points Schmoints.

Highlight of the night: Eric complimented me upon my choker necklace and replied that I am very much in style. As opposed to the acid wash jeans and stirrup pants I normally wear, I guess. No, really. It was very sweet.

After much merriment which I cannot possibly do justice to in the written word, and much sobering on my part, the evening died down and folks drifted away. I think Jason might just have been abducted by aliens because he suddenly disappeared at one point, never to return. (I hope the anal probing didn’t hurt too much, Jason) Eric and I wandered across the street to where our friend Phil’s band was playing. There we continued to drink water and discuss Eric’s various hair possibilities and which famous person he most looks like. Scotty Boom Boom finally showed up, sporting some kind of weird experimental mustache gone horribly awry. He had forsaken his goatee for this weird Fu Manchu thing. Apparently because it works for Phil and Phil is a cool guy, he figured he’d get him some of that. Yeah, well, not so much. And I’m pretty certain that a circle of friends can only support one quirky person with a Fu Manchu mustache without serious implications. I unfortunately couldn’t get over it, mostly because it kept looking at me and making me hungry for Cherry Sour Bombs, which I seem to associate with Charlie Chan. I kept expecting him to ask if I want egg roll with my moo shu. It’s just not a good look for tragically smart white guys. It’s just not. And that is your Weetabix fashion judgment of the day. Right there. Say no to bad facial hair.

Then we all went home. Because apparently I had not gotten the free floating rudeness out of my system when I openly chastised Scott for his facial hair expression, I called Jake and woke him up at what was 12:30 a.m. his time. And then when I went into the bedroom, I found that Esteban had been waiting up for me in case I needed a ride home, even though it was insanely late.

I’m a bad girl. And it’s an evil bar. I should never go back there again. But I probably will. Hi. My name is Weetabix and I’m addicted to kick ass music and magical glowy cups.
