I’ll bet they never would have gone on that camping trip if they woulda had some soup

I came home tonight and Esteban was listening to the banjo song from Deliverance.

“This is the song from Deliverance!” I said, walking into the house, looking cute, but not as cute as yesterday.

“Yeah?” Esteban countered. “It’s just music.”

“I know, but there’s something singularly disturbing about walking into the house and finding your husband listening to the dueling banjos from Deliverance.”

“What do you want for dinner tonight?” Esteban said, looking into the pantry, which I had spent disjointed sessions organizing last night.

“I want you to not make me squeal like a little pig.”

“What?” Esteban said. He has not seen Deliverance and is, in general, a pop culture black hole.

“Nothing. Nevermind.”

“Apparently, we should have SOUP!” He said, looking at what I knew was an entire gaggle of Campbell’s soup cans in our pantry.

“I organized them last night. They now have their own shelf. I like it. Doesn’t it make you happy?” I asked.

“Why?” He responded, incredulously.

“Because….. because…. LOOK AT ALL THAT SOUP!!!!” I said. Then burst into hysterical laughter.

When I opened my eyes and tried to catch my breath, Esteban had come in to watch my spell.

“I hope you pass out…. freak.” He said.

Meanwhile, the finale chords of the banjo duel played out.

AtTENNNNNNNNN SHUN!

I work near a bunch of military type facilities. Some mornings, I see incredibly fit men and women jogging past me, their breath steaming out of their mouths in white clouds as I drive past them, sucking down an Egg McMuffin and jumbo Diet Coke.

This morning, they were all in camo and it reminded me of the time that I was in charge of 69 strong Marines.

Let me ‘splain.

Once upon a time, I was a weekend retreat coordinator at a kid’s YMCA camp. You see, in order to be more fiscally fit, the camp also held adult retreats (no, not the Wakka Chicka Wakka Chicka keys in a fishbowl kind of retreats, get your mind out of the gutter! Sheesh!) and I was Weetabix, your cruise director. In real terms, I taught leadership classes, team-building exercises (low ropes courses where everyone helps each other), coordinated the group meals, building fires in the sauna, and basically made sure no one bled to death on my watch. It entailed me spending my weekends in the north woods, busting my tail feathers for $120. It wasn’t a bad gig and it was a nice second job when we were trying to save money to buy our house or for me to go to England.

One Friday afternoon, as the camp director was leaving, he mentioned, ‘Oh, a couple of Marines are coming up here to build a new road for us in the woods and stuff’ put them in Cabins 1 and 2. They won’t need much, but keep an eye on the younger girls in camp, ok?’ This wasn’t too long after Tailhook and scary stories of the military gone crazy. ‘There’s gonna be like 20 or something.’

No big deal. I went about my night, welcoming the retreaters, giving orientations and tours, getting people situated in their cabins, etc.

The next morning, I was delivering morning announcements to a hall of 120 people when suddenly the cook appeared, looking extremely apprehensive, with two very large Marines behind her. They waited patiently until I finished, and then the cook urgently beckoned to me.

‘Ma’am, we’re under your command for the weekend.’

‘Oh, ok, cool.’ I said. ‘Would you like a look around?’

‘Yes Ma’am.’ He said. ‘The rest of our crew is out back.’

I wandered out the back door and there I was greeted by dozens of camouflaged Marines, all standing in pinpoint precise rows, looking at me. I was wearing a sweatshirt smudged with charcoal and had my messy hair pulled back into a ponytail, my pink Chuck Taylor’s loose and untied. In comparison, their boots were all polished black, their muscles firm, their knives glinted in the sunlight. Um’ knives?

‘Whoa.’ I said.

‘Soldiers, this is Weetabix, our chief command during this maneuver.’

I led them through a tour of the camp, explaining where things were, having their sergeant or whatever translate that into Marine-ese. ‘There’s the bathroom.’ ‘Men, that is the HEAD.’ ‘I’ll need to ask that you remove the knives when on camp property, I’m afraid.’ ‘Men, we are to operate in civilian mode, weapons stowed or concealed.’ ‘That’s where the cheerleaders are staying.’ ‘Men, that area is on a need to know basis only!’

Throughout the day, whenever I would pass a uniformed man (or one of the three lady Marines’ I hadn’t noticed them originally, they were pretty butch), they would eye me with ultimate respect. Sometimes they would ask me if I had any special orders for them.

It was the ultimate control trip: buxom babe in charge of 69 muscular fit Marine lads.

As I slept in my private cabin that night, I could hear them in the woods, doing maneuvers or what have you. Imagine if you will the sounds of frogs, crickets, and an owl hooting here or there, then suddenly out of the blackness, a chorus of male voices ‘SIR YES SIR!’

The next day, I made two big burly men kiss a moose and the entire platoon sang ‘How much is that doggie in the window?’ while I had three men pretend they were puppies, completely with waggedy tails.

It’s true what they say: power corrupts.

(sigh) It was fun while it lasted.

Last night, Esteban asked, ‘How did it go at the dentist?’

‘Oh, it was ok. Good drugs.’

He sighed in mock disgust, ‘Once a stoner, always a stoner.’

I sneered at him, but truthfully, he’s probably right. I’m itching to get drunk on Cosmos right now and I’m blaming it on the happy gas.

Dear Mandy Moore or Smith or Jones or Who Ever You Are:

Repeat after me: I am not Britney Spears. I am not Britney Spears. I have even less talent than Britney Spears on a good day. If it were not for my incredible ability to give recording CEO’s oral gratification, I would be slinging chalupas at Taco Bell.

Good girl. And don’t ever preempt Angel again.

Yours truly,
Weetabix.

Dear PoorYorick,

I hope you’re feeling better after your surgical stuff.

Lots of good thoughts your way,
Weetabix

Dear Chinese Restaurant,

That piece of hard crunching stuff in my chicken and broccoli L13 lunch special? Please tell me it was something benign’ like insects or something. If you put glass in my food, I’m gonna be ticked.

I’m serious. I have friends in the Marines. Don’t mess with my stir fry! Plus, if you screwed up my new filling, Dr. John’s going to want a word with you as well.

Yours truly,
Weetabix

This is your Weetabix…. on drugs

Oh my god, I am so stoned on Nitrous Oxide.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

The pretty colors! Look at all the pretty colors!!!!

So, I’m lying there and I gave the dental hygenist a piece of my mind before she gave me the gas. “The last time I got drilled, he had to give me seven shots before I got numb. Seven Shots!!!! There’s no gas in the world that can make you forget seven shots! Maybe he should have just used a little more goddamn novacaine in ANY ONE OF THE FIRST SIX SHOTS, HUH????”

Then I made a not-so-joking crack about how whenever there will be drilling, they bring you to the farthest chair in the back room… so the other patients aren’t disturbed by the screaming.

That’s when she musta cranked up the goo juice.

I love that woman!

At one point, I asked her if she ever had water fights with that little sprayer thing and she tried to demonstrate that they didn’t go very far… she shot a stream of water a good ten feet into the hall.

“Damn!” I said, only it was more like “Dabb!”

She laughed and then said “It’s a good thing Dr. John didn’t walk by right then.”

I told her I would have peed my pants if she had squirted Dr. John.

Only it came out like “Ahb wudda peeda by panbs ib Dahta Johb wabbed by den!”

Drugs is fine. I miss drugs. I was lying there, cranking up the NPR, listening to some twinkly effervescent classical crap, feeling the floaty feeling. This morning, too, I was waxing poetic about how I don’t drink but when I do drink, it’s straight alcohol, either martinis or Cosmopolitans, none of that wussy girl shit. Give me booze, baby. But I don’t. Because I have many alcoholics in my family who would just enjoy the hell out of my following in their footsteps. So not only do I have to fight against a propensity to store my winter fat in my ass, I also have to fight against a genetic predisposition to be addicted to various stimulants.

Just say No, kiddies. That’s what Weetabix does. Just say No.

Except if some fucker is coming at you with a drill… then take all the drugs they’ll give you.

Because I demanded the white fillings rather than the fugly silver ones (which was probably stupid as these cavities are further back than the two I already have which ARE silver), they had to put this fucked up device in my mouth to keep the area dry. From my saliva. Because apparently I am a girl who also has a genetic predisposition to wetness.

Boy, THAT oughtta give me a bunch of Google hits right there!

My hands are all cold. Bubba bubba bubba bubba.

Heh heh.

Anyway, they put this plastic harness thing in my face, which held my lips back off my face. I felt like Hannibal Lector. I tried saying “Hello Clarice!” in my really bad Anthony Hopkins impression but all they got was “Arrgo Harrys!” because I no longer had any lips at that point.

Then Dr. John started yelling at me to move my tongue back. Move your tongue back! Hold your tongue back please! I’d love to hold my tongue back, Dr. John, if you’ll kindly point out where it has gone!!!! I don’t know where my tongue is!

I’ve never seen that movie where the guy has his eye held open with a toothpick, but that’s what it felt like. At point point, BOTH of them had their hands in my mouth. I mean, I can’t even fit ONE of my hands in my mouth and they had FOUR hands, plus instruments, in my mouth. Dang.

Esteban better not read this… he’ll be wanting one of those mouth opener things for the bedroom.

Heeee!!!!!! Bubba Bubba!

Dr. John ended up putting cotton on my tongue to hold it down. That sounds really gross, but I was just taking his word for it. I never felt it. I never saw it come out. It was wacky that way.

After the drilling and the packing and stuff, they were done. I faked them out, made it seem like I was back to normal and then busted out of there. I hope they didn’t see me before the drilling, sitting there inhaling deeply… hold it…. hold it… hold it….. exhale… inhale… hold it… hold…. it…. hold…. it…. exhale!

Damn. I’m coming down now. My mouth hurts.

Even high, however, I am struck by how dang cute I look! The socks! Did I mention the socks? They are black, but then, if my trousers get pulled up, you see the red argyle pattern.

It’s like a little surprise party for my feet.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, hit the back button. I’d make a link for you, but I just don’t feel like doing anything other than playing with my fucked up face.

Bubba Bubba bubba

buh bye!

Smile if you like the smell of novocaine

Dang I look cute today!

Yesterday, I went shopping for clothing, part of my continuing quest to selfishly buy items for myself rather than Christmas presents for my friends and loved ones. But hey, I got some hot clothes, though. Two pairs of pants, a black blazer, a charcoal blazer with matching charcoal skirt, a casual weird t-shirt, five pairs of trouser socks, and a black dress with white polka dots which only cost $4.99. I didn’t even bother to try that one on’ I figure for $4.99, I can be a little risky. I think that will look cute if I ever go clubbing or get back into singing 40’s style. I just need a cute pair of tights and some black Mary Janes, maybe a black pair of eye glasses and I will look tres retro.

Today’s ensemble: black blazer, red turtleneck, black legging style pants, Doc Martens and black argyle socks with red triangles. I accessorized with diamond stud earrings and my white pearls, creating a juxtaposition of Right Wing conservatism and Left Wing radicalism with my Docs.

Dang I look cute!

This fashion moment has been brought to you by Weetabix’s House of Style. And now back to our regularly scheduled rant.

My weekend, on a whole, as very low key. I bought a bunch of stuff to make Christmas cards and then promptly made them. They are very cute’ aesthetically pleasing and Martha Stewart to the max. It should probably disturb me that I sat in my incredibly messy living room, festooned with pizza boxes, cardboard boxes and forty two pairs of my abandoned shoes. It didn’t, though. It’s all in perspective, baby.

Again, if anyone’s interested in exchanging Holiday Cards with me, send me an email with your address! For your effort, you will receive a handmade Weetabix Holiday card for your very own.

Suitable for framing!

I may have single handedly rescued the economy this weekend. I spent entirely too much money, the bulk of which was on Esteban and myself, although I did some crucial holiday shopping. I ended up purchasing a Bose surround sound system at the local warehouse store and now we can comfortably compete with our techno geek friends. I do have to say, the enhanced sound makes for some dang fine couch potato activities.

Like that’s what I needed’ to make sitting on my ass seem more enticing.

Esteban dove headforward into installing the thing. He hasn’t yet mounted the various speakers, but unpacking, setting up, untangling the wires, and a trip to Radio Shack for $68 worth of whozits, etc, took him over four hours. I played the perfect cheerleader ‘You can do it, honey, I know you can!’ but Esteban called my ruse and finished my thought ‘Because I’m not going to help you, thank god you’re doing it!’

It is both a strange and terrible thing to be with someone who knows you so well.

Today, I’m getting my poor baby cavities filled. I had grown so fond of them. I shall miss them, but at least I’ll get the pleasure of smelling the burning tooth as they drill the crap out.

Yay!

At least I look damn cute.

Citation for being Brunette in a Blonde Zone

Sometimes I think that life would have been so much easier if I had remained a blonde.

I was born a blonde, you see. I was a blonde for the first seven years of my life until my hair gradually darkened. Then I was a blonde in the summer and a reddish chestnutty blonde in the winter. Finally, it stopped turning blonde all together and left me with my strange chestnutty brown hair with little specks of gold to remind me of what once had been.

(sigh)

All that blonde greatness ripped from my fingers.

Now I go through life with the attitude of a diva and the head of a housekeeper.

When I was shopping for hairstylists, they would taunt me by saying “With your complexion, you should think about going either really light or really dark.” Of course, God’s idea of a joke is the fact that my eyebrows are a shade darker than my hair, thus eliminating the possibility of becoming a bottle blonde.

It just makes me hate Reese Witherspoon with a whole new intensity.

For awhile, I was having my hair coloured reguarly…. two shades darker than my natural shade, with a hint of boysenberry for kick. The day of Mo’s wedding, I went in for a touch up with a different stylist (this again was during my experimental time) and ended up looking like Morticia Addams. It was a good thing I had Doc Martens, as I was successfully pulling off a goth punk thing at the time.

I was frantic as Esteban and I were getting ready for the wedding, not wanting to face the comments that my mother and M.G. would make. My mother, bless her entirely gray head, has been colouring her hair since she was 26, but she exacts great pain on me for doing it… I think it makes her feel old, or perhaps she is trying to exert a little parental control to make up for the utter lack thereof when I was in high school.

To assuage my fears, Esteban shaved his entire face. His theory was that my family would be so shocked at seeing his clean-shaven face, a site they had never before seen, that they would completely ignore my homage to Marilyn Manson.

Esteban led me into the reception. The first words from my mother’s face “My God Weetabix…. did you go crazy with a bottle of black shoe polish?” M.G. has been dying her hair pitch black for forty years in effort to further similliarties to Jane Russell (which, in fact, she does resemble, mostly due to the 1950’s conical pointed bras she hoists her girls with). M.G. had the grace to ask if I was trying to cover up gray (I had not yet begun to discover gray hairs then).

Gotta love ’em.

Had I stayed blonde, I wouldn’t have to worry about it…. one does not notice a gray hair amongst blonde ones until they have equaled them in number. Or maybe blondes just forget about them. Who knows.

Still hate Reese Witherspoon though. Hate her quirky self all to bits.

Will this be cash or check?

It is currently 7:17 a.m.

I have been awake for two hours.

God help me and my stupidity.

But first, yesterday:

Esteban and I always have a rule about non-Christmas holidays’ whichever family invites us over to dinner FIRST gets us. We hate eating two big meals in one day. We hate shuttling ourselves all over creation for some dry turkey or overly-salty ham.

Hate. It.

June called me a few weeks ago, as she has gotten the hang of this ‘early request’ stuff and has had the pleasure of our company on major holidays for the past couple of years now, and invited us to Thanksgiving with her and Ward. Great! Thanks! In all honesty, I didn’t really feel like eating at Mafia Grandma’s anyway, with the strained relationships we had going on there. Plus, as much as I love her, Mafia Grandma isn’t the greatest cook in the world. June is actually a fairly acceptable cook’ she relies on a few standards that are pretty difficult to fuck up, like frozen corn, Grands biscuits, and the like’ but I already knew that she was planning on getting a catered dinner anyway. For whatever reason, she doesn’t like cooking on Thanksgiving. I didn’t really have a problem with that. It was scrumptious, but it was definitely better, on a whole, than dinner at M.G.’s house.

Fine. Then we find out that M.G. wasn’t HAVING Thanksgiving at her house and what was more, we weren’t invited to Aunt Brunhilda’s, which is where M.G. would be dining. Suddenly, my mother and little brother would be eating Thanksgiving dinner alone. Mom asks if Esteban and I would like to eat with them. I explained that we had already accepted a dinner invitation at Ward and June’s house, but we could stop over before that for awhile. Mom said, ‘Great, I’ll make appetizers then.’

Wonderful! Brilliant! All was right in the world of family holidays.

Wednesday night, she calls me and asks me to look up grilling instructions for turkeys on the internet. Then she rattles off everything that she is making for us. And asks if Esteban likes celery and onions because if not, she’ll make a separate batch of stuffing without celery and onions especially for him.

Fatal tragic error coming up here: I couldn’t say ‘Stop the Presses! We’re not eating a full-blown meal at your house!’ I couldn’t do it. She was so excited that we were coming to HER house, that Esteban (who doesn’t really end up at her house very often) and I were spending time in her little home, along with my sister Mo and niece Abby. I felt so bad for her, realizing that all along, we’d only gone to family gatherings at M.G.’s house but now my mom’s a Grandma too and she wanted her own family traditions.

Thus, I made the decision, in my mind, that we would be eating two Thanksgiving dinners and forgot about it. Forgot to tell explain it to my husband, too. Thursday morning, I mention to him ‘Mom’s making a special batch of stuffing for you without onions and celery, so make sure to take some.’

(cue sound of cars coming to a screeching halt)

‘WHAT?!?!?!’ Esteban said. ‘WHAT?!?!?! I thought it was just going to be appetizers!’

Oops. My bad. So then we had to have an entire discussion about why this year, I acquiesced to having two dinners and why I felt that I had to do it this year and next year it wouldn’t be a problem, yada yada yada. And we both got grumpy with each other and there was much crossing of arms over our chests and pouting and the like. Stupid thing. I hate holidays sometimes. They’re stressful.

Around 2:00 we went over to my mom’s house. I was so proud of Esteban, he was Johnny-on-the-spot with helping Mom get the turkey off the grill. We watched the Packer game and then Abby and Mo came over. We had the most wonderful meal too. Mo and I were raving about it. My mother was actually giggling like a school girl. I had forgotten how great of a cook my mother is. My little brother even made a dish called Kugel, which they learned about in Social Studies, studying other cultures. It was like rice pudding, but with noodles instead of rice and it was actually fairly good!

Later, we retired to the living room to digest and watch the Dallas/Denver game (where Dallas got trounced’ he he he!) and play with Abby.

At one point, Mo had her legs crossed and Abby licked Mo’s exposed stubble-ridden leg. We all started laughing because that was rather funny. Mo asked her ‘Abby, what did my leg taste like?’

Abby replied, ‘It tasted like itch!’

I almost fainted from laughing so much. Of course, my laughter one fueled her desire to lick Mo’s leg.

A good time was had by all.

Then we packed up and went to Ward and June’s house. There we sat down to eat with them and basically picked at things. My attitude was that if it didn’t taste incredible, I wasn’t going to eat it’. And while it was very good, it wasn’t incredible so I didn’t stuff myself.

7:00 pm rolled around and Survivor came on. I went into the living room to watch on their ginormous television with the surround sound crap, but not only were they washing dishes loudly, running the garbage disposal and talking, Esteban was also playing Cowboy Be-Bop anime on his laptop at fairly high levels, so I pretty much missed most of what was said on the show. I didn’t get to hear why Frank was doing that weird bonding thing with the elephant. The blond skinny young chick made a bunch of faces but I didn’t hear what she was talking about. I think Goober Pyle must have said something dumb at one point because that’s generally a given with him, but I totally missed it.

I wanted to leave after that, but they wanted to watch CSI, which was the first time I’ve ever watched that show. I think the producers of that show are on drugs. At one point, the camera followed a bullet as it went into a person’ yucko when you’re overly stuffed and ready to puke.

We went home and I proceeded to scout the sale ads. In previous years, I’ve gotten up and gone out shopping for really good deals out of necessity. Now, it’s not such an issue, my budget is not quite as tight, but I’m still not going to pass up a good deal on something if I see one. The toy store had a Talking Woody doll for $12.99, regularly priced 39.99 and Abby is in love with Woody. Also, there were a few things at other stores that I was willing to get up for. I set my alarm and went to sleep in my sweats.

Roughly three minutes later, my alarm went off and I jumped out of bed. I had slept in my sweat pants, my GB Packers t-shirt and socks, so all I had to do was throw on a sweatshirt and a pair of shoes. I didn’t even stop to put a bra on because I figured I looked like hell anyway, why bother with lifting and separating?

First stop: the toy store. It was 5:10 A.M. when I pulled up’ the store had been open for ten minutes and the parking lot was full. Across the mall, people were lining up for Shopko, which opened an hour later. I groggily made my way into the toy store with flyer in hand, rubbing the sleep out of my eyes.

Inside: mayhem. It was a milieu of ugly sleep deprived parents. All I wanted was a talking Woody doll. After fifteen minutes of circumnavigating around throngs of people in lines, I found Woody. Score! I also found an Operation game for $6. Woohoo! If I didn’t use that as a Christmas present, I would keep it for myself.

Now, to find a line. For whatever insane half-asleep logic I had, I determined that the shortest lines were in the front of the store. I found a line and got in it. The girl in front of my was chipper and sweet, with hair done in a perfect Malibu Barbie ponytail. While I had eye boogers, she had mascara. Where I had floppy southward pointing mammaries, she was pert and chipper. I started to hallucinate that she was a Skipper doll, come to life. Ahead of her, another woman who was wearing full makeup but to another extreme. She looked like a mix between Large Marge from PeeWee’s Big Adventure and Mimi from the Drew Carey show. (Here’s a little trivia for you: Kathy Kinney, the woman who plays Mimi, hails from Stevens Point, Wisconsin, where I went to college!) Large Marge wore a zebra printed sweatshirt which someone had attacked with a BeDazzler’. Because zebra prints aren’t fancy enough, see. Her husband was wearing a John Deere hat that looked as though had been lost in the bottom of an outhouse, but someone found it and see, it’s still good. For their lucky children: an Easy Bake oven (gotta make dinner some nights!), three guns and four of those toy Monster Truck things.

I entered the line at 5:20 A.M. At 5:40 A.M. we had not moved. The cashier was roughly sixteen years old had no sense of urgency. The line across the store was moving. I hated the people in the line across the store. Hated them with the fire of a thousand suns.

We sent an emissary up to the front of the line to determine why we had not yet moved. It turned out that there was a second line which was coming from the aisles and merging with our line. ‘That’s not fair!’ my fellow shoppers screamed.

At that point, I would have paid $5 for a cappuchino.

I watched as the seemingly second person in line, a sleepy-eyed flat faced girl with a tie-dyed shirt, continued to be the second person in line for fifteen minutes. I tried to incite a shopper riot.

‘She’s impinging on our shopping rights, letting those other people in front of her!’ I said.

I now focused my hatred upon Tie-Dye girl. Hate her. Look at her, standing there, holding up the line with her stupidity. She looks like she had Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. She should go back to the Drunk Baby Halfway House where she belonged!

Finally, our line started moving. Tie-Dye checked out. I continued to focus my thoughts of death and illness upon her, until she left the store.

At that point, I would have paid $10 for a cappuchino.

I started to fantasize about hiding my items in the shelves and coming back after the lines had finished. My back started to hurt’. Apparently the cat-like stretching I do in the morning is an important thing and when I don’t do it, I stiffen up like a teenage boy watching a scrambled Playboy channel. Plus, I didn’t realize it but shopping without a bra is really not a good option for me. I mean, no one could probably tell I wasn’t wearing one, but man, my girls were just… uncomfortable. And I was starting to sweat in my sweatshirt, but I couldn’t take it off because THEN it would be fairly obvious. I would have made Large Marge look classy if I had been standing there, booger-eyed and loose breasted.

At 6:02 A.M. I was twenty feet from the cash register. Apparently, the store manager had come in and inflicted a little justice on the cashier for allowing the people in the aisle line to cut into our line.

At that point, I would have shown someone my unencumbered breasts for a cappuccino.

I finally left the store at 6:30 A.M. Total savings based off the suggested retail price of the two items I purchased: $36. Probable actual savings of the items: $14.

Yeah. That was worth it.

My plan had been to then progress to Kohl’s and then to Fleet Farm, but Kohl’s had been open for almost a half hour and the parking lot was packed. Fleet Farm, on the other hand, had yet to open, so I talked myself out of braving Kohl’s and instead drove to Fleet Farm, where I sat trying to stretch out my aching back in the parking lot with a lot of other fools.

I really needed caffeine at that point. Plus, I needed to go to the bathroom. The store wouldn’t open for another twenty minutes. Apathy set in’ knowing that I had saved only $14 for that entire hour and a half in the store really pissed me off. I really didn’t care all that much. I wanted to go to the bathroom.

Fuck it. I drove home to use the bathroom. Then I sat down to get my email. Now it’s much later and I don’t think I can bear going out again.

Maybe for a cappuccino.

Hope that your holiday was lots of fun!

The boring Thanksgiving entry

Things I am thankful for this year:

Jason Alexander’s television show was canceled.

Buffy is now on FX five days a week!

My family is healthy and strong.

I have a wonderful loving husband, a decent home (getting better every year), a job where I can surf the internet freely, and two loving albeit annoying cats.

I got new shoelaces for my Doc Martens from Bfee.

I am finally to the point in my life where “making ends meet” is no longer a struggle and I can finally afford my student loan payment.

Spike and Buffy…. that’s all I’m going to say.

I live in a country where I am not impinged upon terribly much for my gender, in that I can work, vote, read, travel freely, drive a car, own property, have a credit card, get my nails done, wear a cleavage-baring shirt, dye my hair blue, or any other of the things I might want to do.

I got to see Rent this year.

I got that chunk of wood taken out of my butt.

I saw dolphins in the Gulf.

None of my friends or family perished in terrorist attacks or plane crashes.

My mother in law just called me to tell me that they’re showing reruns of Buffy on FX… while I already knew that, it’s nice to have a great set of in-laws who are so thoughtful and wonderful that she would make the effort to do that.

I have a super group of friends who I adore immensely and who sometimes go out to karaoke with me, even though it’s probably painful for them.

My friend Markus made me loaves of bread to bring to Thanksgiving dinner with my family…. that’s so sweet.

Carson Daly is soon reaching the age when he will no longer be hip enough to host TRL.

UncleBob told me about AudioGalaxy which makes me giddy the way that Napster used to.

I haven’t eaten Spam in over 20 years.

The fact that I can hear, see, sing, talk, walk, touch, taste, scrapbook, drive, swim, surf the internet, and shop without impingement.

My little brother got braces for his teeth… something that has been bothering him since he was five years old.

I do not live with Mariah Carey, nor must I ever see her face to face in any of my daily routine.

No animals were hurt in the creation nor the development of this diary.

Someday, Michael Jackson’s face will implode and then he will be no more.

Martha Stewart is not my mother nor my mother-in-law.

I live in a town which is small enough to be relatively crime and pollution free, where strangers still say “How are you doing?” and chase you down the road if you’ve forgotten something on the roof of your car, but large enough that we have a Barnes & Noble and high speed internet access.

I have this crazy web page with an incredibly new layout (Thanks to Dead Dog Dorris) and fabulous people who write things in my guestbook and message board.

Hope you all have a fabulous Thanksgiving. Don’t eat until you get sick.

And if you’re elsewhere in the world, have a great Thursday. That “Don’t eat” advice applies to you too, though.

And they call it Poopy love…………

I’m going to apologize up front for this entry. Really. It’s dwelling on poo far more than is probably prudent.

You were warned.

I think I got food poisoning from the bagel place this morning.

I stopped in and got a whole wheat bagel with no fat cream cheese and a half French Vanilla Cappuchino/half Hot Cocoa because I’m a wuss and don’t like real coffee but it was 36 degrees and Diet Coke just didn’t seem right.

Now I have the toot splats.

That was probably more than you really wanted to know. But it made me giggle, as all poop euphamisms do.

Have you ever tried to wipe with your opposite hand?

Seven years ago, I dislocated my right shoulder slamming an incredible volleyball spike. I relocated my own shoulder on the volleyball court, played three more games on sheer adrenaline, and then went home and cried in the shower. Then I drove myself to the emergency room where they told me that my shoulder had been dislocated and was now back in the spot it was supposed to be in but I didn’t do it any favors when I went all Iron Woman and played while injured. The next eight weeks were spent in a sling and at the end of week eight, it hurt almost as much as the night I did it. It took roughly six months for it to be normal and a year before I’d venture onto the volleyball court again.

But the butt wiping… before that point, it had been solely a right-handed phenomenon. Thus the left hand had to take over. And that was really difficult but I managed because I had to. I couldn’t really ask Esteban to come in and wipe my ass for me, although he probably would have. So I went leftie and never looked back. Now, I couldn’t go back unless I had to again.

So that must be why I write about poop so much. Stay with me….

Physiologically, the right side of your brain, which is considered the center of verbal creativity, aesthetics, and the like, controls the left side of your body. Thus, one could postulate that because I wipe with my left, I engage the right side of my brain, fixating it upon this task. When I engage my right brain in other things, such as writing, it brings forward all of these poop issues.

There it is. Right there. Proof that the energy I exerted gaining a degree in Psychology did not go to waste.

It’s probably that no-fat cream cheese that did it to me. Maybe it’s that Olestra crap that makes your bowels turn liquid faster than looking at Micheal Jackson sans makeup. Or maybe it was my wussy warm drink. Maybe I’m suffering intense withdrawls from McDonald’s Diet Coke.

Whatever the reason, I’m feeling pretty yucky.

Damned bagel place.

In non-poop related news:

Donny Osmond is going to be on Fear Factor.

Dude!

DOOOOOOOOOOOOOODE!

I am so there!

But then, maybe the genius’ behind Fear Factor will work poo somehow into the equation. You never know.

I will cry if Donny gets poop on himself though. Kelly Preston and the wrestler Chynna can wear all the poop they want, but don’t besmirch the Osmond name, people! I may not be able to actually force myself to watch Donny being covered in worms. Wacky whipped cream from a tossed pie… yes. Worms… no.

November 27th. It will definately be bittersweet.

My god, will this bowel distress ever cease????

St. Louis, Giverny, McDonald’s, and now my eyebrows

I want to grow my hair longer’ so I got it cut last week. This is girl logic for you right there, isn’t it? I never want to be mistaken for a man again. I mean, apparently I make one heck of a pretty guy, completely with 46DD gynecomastia and all that, but a dude nonetheless.

Plus, no matter how hard I try, I’m just not pulling off the Chynna Phillips look in the ‘Hold On’ video the way I imagine. I’m really just a Carnie Wilson’ the hip talking chubby girl with the great singing voice who everyone likes and video directors place behind in strategic positions behind the rest of the group for optimum ass-hiding.

So growing the hair out now. Don’t want the girls to be confused with having man breasts.

Once I read that chubby girls obsess about shoes and haircuts because their feet and follicles will never gain weight.

The side effect to my new hair-cut-for-longer hair is that I had my eyebrows waxed. I had abandoned hope two years ago when I had a traumatic waxing experience. I think the stylist ripped off most of my face, including parts I had grown quite fond of. I gained a very attractive upper lip scab for about three weeks, which was agonizing whenever I smiled, ate or talked.

In the two years since, my brows have metamorphed from shaped to slightly arched to natural to organic to ‘Oh my god, Ethel! Get the Ortho and the Weed Whacker!’ Because I trust my stylist Staci explicitly, I allowed for the waxing and I have to say, I look lovely.

I might still look like a man with man breasts, but now I look slightly surprised at finding them upon my chest.

I’m in a wacky mood today. I asked my boss if I would get a higher performance rating if I helped users in the form of a song, ala Rent or possibly the musical episode of Buffy. I’ve been trying to formulate a song all morning’. ‘Right click on your Windows Start button’ choose the explore option for your chosen function’..This is as easy as can be’. Your program resides on drive C!’

I suggested that possibly I could be given extra credit on my performance evaluation for vocal stylings and ability to sing on key. She recommended that I ask the Veep about that, but I hesitate because that’s the guy whose cats watch him shower. Also, he’d probably offer my review using interpretive dance.

I’m planning on writing out my Holiday cards this weekend. I always try to get in the Christmas mood over the Thanksgiving weekend but I’m finding it especially hard as there is no snow on the ground. Also, I hate writing to people I don’t care about. Esteban’s cousins come to mind. I’ve never met them and some of them are grumpy people. I lurve to receive Holiday cards, though. They make me happy. This year, I have met so many cool online friends’ if you would like me to send you a card, I’ll need your address! Send me an email!

Last year, Pamie at Squishy did a Holiday card exchange’ if you would be interested in such a thing, with other Diarylanders, tell the message board. We can get something started, I’m certain!

Kiss me before I say something stupid….

Oh man.

Sometimes I really stick my foot in my mouth. Things that sound so much better in my head pop right out of my mouth (or sometimes, through my fingers into the keyboard) before I can stop myself.

Today I really embarrassed myself. I normally say a lot of off the wall things to people’ I like to believe it’s part of my charm, but sometimes I just revert back to being 13 years old and wanting to curl up and die.

So, without going into too many details, I said something to a very cool guy to make him feel better about himself and he obviously got very uncomfortable, changed the subject and then minutes later, made an excuse to end the convo because he had places to go, things to do, and needed to purge the inappropriateness of my comment from him by dousing himself in gasoline and lighting himself in a purifying fire.

It’s times like this that I think very highly of stapling my mouth shut. Or maybe go all punk and pierce my lips together with attractive stainless steel barbells. Then I would be forced to live on Ice-Es from the Kmart Lunch Counter and my lips would always be stained an attractive cherry red.

Once, I had the great misfortune of eating lunch across from the company V-P, my boss and my boss’s boss. We were talking about cats and the Veep said that all of his cats line up and watch him take a shower.

Wanting to further my reputation as Witty Banterista, I formulated a clever comment in my brain.

‘They’re probably wondering ‘Why isn’t he licking himself?&AO8AvwC9AO8AvwC9-

Because, you know, that’s how cats shower. They lick themselves. Get it? Innocent and cute. Not meant to be all dirty and black socks-wearing, heavy bass sounding Wakka Chicka Wakka Chicka, ‘ooh you want it you know you want it’ brown paper bag PORNO!!!

Once it came out of my mouth however, it was obvious to myself as well as everyone within earshot that I had conjured for everyone the most inappropriate image of the Vice President engaged in bathing himself with his tongue whilst his voyeuristic felines watched.

Everyone burst into laughter. I immediately turned seven shades of violet. In fact, one might even be able to point to this episode as the cause of my rosacea.

My first experience with “Foot In Mouth” syndrome happened when I was five years old. My wicked stepfather had a friend from work stop over. He was a fun guy, played with me a lot, did some magic tricks for me, listened to my jokes. His name was Mitch.

Only I didn’t hear Mitch.

I heard “Bitch”.

The entire time he was over, I didn’t want to say his name. I just kept calling him ‘Funny Man’… because I was much better at subtle fakery when I was five years old. Plus, I wasn’t sure I had heard correct. His name was Bitch? But again, I thought I heard them call him Bitch. Maybe because he was an adult, he could get away with having a swear word for a first name?

When he finally left, I was relieved in that I didn’t have to avoid using his name.

“Boy, that Bitch sure is a nice guy!” I exclaimed happily.

The silence that passed through the room was deafening. All eyes turned to me. It was then that I understood the desire to want the earth to open up and swallow oneself.

So now, this new episode, which I shant divulge details but suffice to say obviously made all parties involved uncomfortable, is right up there on Weetabix’s Trauma Center and forced me to go and get a Frappuchino and three sour dough mini batards with which to carbo binge. At least I didn’t order Sour Dough Bastards, like I thought about doing. Plus, instead of making the very cool guy feel good about himself, I think now he might think I was coming on to him. Because I’m married and all that. And that would be wrong. As wrong as insinuating that a multi-millionaire Vice President indulges in a little tongue shower and making people wonder if he gets pubic hairballs. Because THAT would be beyond wrong.

(sigh)

I now have “I Wanna Fly” by Sugar Ray stuck in my head but I do not struggle to replace it with, say, a little MoJo Nixon or perhaps Tom Waits or even the Lady Bug Picnic song… no… I’m taking it on as a pennance for my actions. Let that be a lesson to me.

I added a new favorite to my list’ Dancingbrave. She shares my addiction to Diet Coke, Buffy, and MightyBigTv. I lurve her.

From Today’s Green Bay Press Gazette:

Packers need plan to avoid toilet crisis

An increase in the number of toilets at a renovated Lambeau Field means that come halftime, there’s going to be a whole lot of flushin’ going on.

Need I even tell you that it is the front-page top story for today?

With all that beer and cheese consumption, you don’t mess with the plumbing.
