The one with several references to men’s underwear

Last night, Esteban and I slept on opposite sides of the bed and now I’m all out of sorts. You see, we have this strange sleep ritual. I generally go to bed earlier than Esteban. I’m a hot person and for reasons known only to Esteban and the Lord Almighty Himself, the heater for the waterbed is located directly beneath my bodacious hinder. Thus, I naturally gravitate toward the cooler side of the bed, which is Esteban’s side. This has the lovely side effect in that Esteban’s pillow smells like him, maybe it’s pheromones or something, I don’t know, but I have lovely drooling sleep over on his side of the bed.

When Esteban finally comes to bed, somehow he fixes the situation. I don’t know how exactly he does this because he must have a certain finesse in that he never really seems to wake me up. In the morning, all is right with the world and I am back to the right side of the bed, with Esteban slumbering on his musky left side.

Now here’s where it gets strange.

In the morning, I wake up considerably earlier than Esteban and go about my morning routine (showering, teeth brushing, reading UncleBob, etc). When I return to give him a kiss goodbye, I find that he has usually moved over into MY side of the bed and is now depositing a healthy amount of drool on my lovely down pillow.

Last night, for whatever reason, Esteban crawled directly into my side of the bed, leaving me drooling peacefully upon his ‘man grease’ covered pillow. Sometime in the middle of the night, he asked me if we could switch pillows as my down pillow was driving him crazy.

After nearly ten years of sharing a bed, you ascertain a kind of sleeping etiquette. For instance, hogging the bed is frowned upon. You subconsciously drift to the far side of the bed to avoid a clumsy knocking of shins or lying upon errant locks of hair. Esteban’s toenails have been known to draw blood, thus my feet cower in the lower right corner, usually wrapped in a protective layer of down comforter. This is all a Darwinesque means of sleep survival, really.

But when you change sides, suddenly everything is thrown awry. Esteban spent most of his sleeping hours last night rolling to the left side, crushing me up against a rail. When I asked him to move, he said, ‘It’s just like WordPad’ just use copy and paste.’

What is more, Chelsea, being the addle-brained antiquity that she is, gets confused. She knows that she doesn’t like me because I shove various medications down her gullet thrice daily. She knows she likes Esteban because he conveniently forgets to shove pills down her throat thrice daily and will ply her feline needs with furious petting for hours at end. She knows Esteban sleeps on the left side. She mounted my prone form, meowing furiously, then quizzically, then frantically! Something was awry! The sleeping body had far less hair than she was accustomed to and the general terrain was far more lumpy and curvy! She looked from Esteban to me and back again, upset and constantly meowing.

I tried putting her on Esteban but to no avail. She didn’t LIKE the person sitting on that side of the bed! That person puts pills down her throat! That person once sneezed directly into her face. Tilly likes that person which would mean that Tilly would be jealous if she lay upon that person and she didn’t LIKE Tilly when she was jealous because Tilly tended to beat the elderly snot out of her when she was jealous.

So Chelsea’s answer to this confusion was to stand on my hip and constantly meow. At 4:00 A.M.

Grrr Arggh!

I tried to get Esteban to switch sides with me. He replied ‘Mrr Awww Microsoft’.

He’s really been working too much.

This morning, I woke trapped under a sleeping feline body, balancing precariously on the side of the bed, pressed there by Esteban’s dormant form. Change is not necessarily a good thing.

Last night, I watched Jackass, having been away from it for some time. I think it’s lost the allure, although its rather funny seeing a bunch of grown men sitting around in their underwear with little red targets painted on them, elaborately ritualizing a testicular game of chicken’throwing a racquetball at each other’s crotch to see who could stand it the longest. Later, a bunch of them wrestled in their BVDs on a neighbor’s lawn. I was struck by the sheer maleness of it. I cannot imagine a group of women all sitting around in their underwear period. That’s very strange. Despite depictions in male-inspired movies such as Animal House, most women wouldn’t feel comfortable sitting naked or partially dressed around their girlfriends. There would have to be the obvious comparisons of fatty thighs, poochy tummies, stretch marks. There is no gender comparison, really.

A long while back, Esteban and I went to a doomed outdoor concert, during which monsoon type rains fell and the sound board took a lightening strike, delaying the concert two hours. What is worse, the amphitheatre was basically a hillside that turned to slippery muck with the first drop of rain. While the females and some of the men basically exerted all of their effort trying to remain upright and prevent themselves from sliding Romancing The Stone-style down the hill through the crowd, other men turned the slimy hill into a carnival ride. They whipped off their shirts and painted their chests with mud, drawing circles around their nipples.

Despite all of my friendships with men, there are some things I will never possibly understand. Or maybe when it comes down to it, some men will forever remain little boys. And I suppose there are parallels’ Tupperware parties being the inevitable allure of little girls playing house, baby showers with adorable little outfits the outcome of years of playing with dolls.

A few years back, a bunch of my guy friends went to a bachelor party at a strip club. One of the strippers would go up to the men, lift up their shirts and SLAPPPPP them hard on their guts, leaving a stinging red hand print. For this, they gave her money. One of the men apparently displeased her (or maybe he pleased her? I’m not certain)’. She lifted his shirt, gave him a huge wedgie, then ripped the elastic off his Fruit of the Looms and tied it around his neck. For that, his cronies congratulated him. And then they gave her more money.

I just don’t get it. I think she got away with it because she was naked. That would have pissed me off, personally, as my undies cost $15 a piece. One has to wonder what that man told his wife when he came home wearing the waistband from his underwear around his neck, or when he removed his jeans and his briefs fell to the floor.

Men are such a mystery sometimes. But then, there’s this new commercial for hair products, which depicts a beautiful woman walking into a restaurant and her friend sees her and starts to scream, because they’re both using the same shampoo or some such. I know that scream. I have screamed that scream. And yes, I have so very much shame for being such an illogical stereotype for my gender. And I clap and squeal manically when Buffy and Spike kiss. But I’m researching 12 step groups to fix my inane girlness and believe that someday, somehow, I will eventually make sense.

So there.

This diary could use some little cute sayings painted on rough wood,

maybe a snowman too I’ve spent the day with Mafia Grandma again, trying with all my strength to NOT make snarky comments about the fact that my immediate relations are not invited to Thanksgiving this year. We went to two craft shows. One was at a high school and had I been by myself I would have turned around and driven as fast as I could far far away. Cars were lined up for blocks, parking defiantly on the school’s lawn despite the No Parking On Grass signs. Cheerleaders were directing traffic.

I ended up baja-ing it over a curb to park illegally on the grass… I didn’t want to make my 70-year-old M.G. walk a marathon just to shop for overly priced crocheted toilet tank covers and the like. I wish I would have had some forethought and drove the truck rather than the Monte but such is life. I probably wouldn’t have cared even so because I compiled a Christmas CD from illegally downloaded tracks to enjoy during our driving. Besides, I figured, if I ripped off the muffler on the Monte… I still had one left. This must be the reason they put two on, right?

It was roughly 120 degrees inside the craft show. I ended up refusing to go down some of the more crowded aisles, for which M.G. did her little snitty sniffing and sighing. It was crazy.

Then off to a second craft show, which was thankfully far less crowded and only 110 degrees.

Total purchase: six pieces of Divinity candy for Esteban for $2.50, cost of admission $2.

I shouldn’t go to those things. I now have the intense desire to ply my walls with gigantic artificial flowers and throw lace doilies over everything. I am fighting back the feeling that I should be wearing sweatshirts with cute children appliques and matching turtleneck underneath. I expect everything to smell like vanilla or pine.

For all that I berate Martha Stewart, I do have to admit that she has at least tried to foster a trend of simplicity. I am so utterly tired of Kuntry Kute and rough wood, curled iron and ripped rags. After being assaulted by poor taste today, I’m almost craving Martha’s ugly green depression glass and faux-1930’s farm/Connecticut nouveau riche snobbery.

Last night, Esteban, Jonathon and I went to a late showing of Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone.

It was nice, but not “Oh My God I must turn around and go again!” nice. The boy would played Harry had the facial expressiveness of a door stop. Plus, the Weasley twins weren’t as cute as I had hoped they’d be. I’ve always pictured Fred and George as kind of hot in a dangerous way… they were a bit strange looking in the movie. I suppose it wouldn’t be the easiest task in the world to find two 14-year-old British twins with red hair who could act.

Did anyone know that WD-40 is flammable and should NEVER be used to make a candle? Nor a Mandle? Did you?

I didn’t.

Chelsea is meowing at me and I have an intense urge to put a ruffle on her, possibly a doiley, so I must depart. Have a super weekend!

I just love the smell of vomit in the morning….

Last night, I got home and found that Esteban would not be home until after I was in bed. I proceeded to make a turkey breast for the next day’s dinner, as it takes something like three hours to cook and we generally prefer to eat earlier than 9:00 pm.

Then I lit my scented candle and proceeded to do wifely things like laundry, cat feeding, lounging around in my adorable pink flowered boxer shorts and not so adorable but equally as comfortable Green Bay Packers t-shirt and download illegal music from the web.

My current jarred candle is Peanut Butter Cookies, which would normally be too precious for me to bear, but one whiff and I was drooling. Esteban declared that it was too strong awhile back, so I only burn it when he’s not home. I actually dislike the fact that I adore the countrified jar candle thing so much, but I take harbor in knowing that I’m a picky snit about the scents. My favorite scent right now, aside from the Peanut Butter Cookies, is one that smells like an autumn apple orchard’ slightly overripe and fermenting. I’m not one for the scents of flowers or ‘Bayberry’ whatever the hell that is and I distrust candles which are named for intangibles, like ‘Rain’ or ‘Comfort’. Who are they to tell me what ‘Comfort’ smells like? To me, it smells like freshly laundered cotton sheets, which have been line-dried in my great-grandmother’s backyard’ it certainly doesn’t smell like cinnamon-scented anus, as the candlemakers would have one believe.

Esteban came home unexpectedly early (8:00 pm), so I blew out my candle and continued about my domestic route. He then plopped onto the couch and grumped at me for a)leaving the light on in the basement when I did the laundry b)watching a stupid television show and c) the way I got up out of a chair.

He then inquired ‘Are you cooking something?’

‘Yes. A turkey breast.’

‘Something else?’

‘No, just a turkey breast.’

‘At this time of night?’

‘It’s for tomorrow night.’

‘Oh, I could have sworn it smelled like you were making cookies.’

I was puzzled for a minute and then realized that he smelled the yummy candle I had been burning, which made him even grumpier because there were no warm cookies to be had. I went into the kitchen and started to compile the elements of peanut butter cookie dough, but then I stopped myself. Why the heck was I making Mr. Grouchy Pants cookies? After he had been all snotty? No way, mister. Not this liberated woman! Instead I went downstairs and proceeded to wash a load of his dirty laundry and the towels that he had left soggy on the bathroom floor.

Yeah. I’m a BAD ASS FEMINIST!

Someday, I swear, the internal battle going on between Gloria Steinem and June Cleaver will be the end of me.

My pregnant and extremely healthy friend Kathi succumbed to the lure of an Oscar Mayer Lunchable in the cafeteria vending machine this morning. This is somewhat shocking because she’s really really healthy and hasn’t even eaten anything sweet since 1989 (well, except for fruit, but you get the picture). Even I, with my intense addiction to Diet Coke and Godiva chocolates, will not touch a Lunchable. They’re just attractively packaged evil.

Back to candle scents. All of the candle scents are so obviously marketed toward women. I suppose that’s why I dislike the fact that I like them so much’ I hate to be a fulfilling a demographic.

I could probably make a lot of money marketing scented candles to men, with manly scents and cool masculine containers. Scents like ‘Tire Store’ and ‘Pipe Tobacco’ would be big sellers. Maybe ‘Sawdust’, ‘Leather’, ‘New Jaguar’ and ‘WD-40’ as well.

Maybe I’d explore a few scent mixtures, like ‘After Party’ which would be a subtle blend of Stale Beer and Ashtray with just a hint of Sex and Vomit.

I think I’d call them “Mandles”. It smells like a winner.

Give yourself a big hand!

Today we got our new phone books!

WOOOOHOOOO!!!!

I don’t know about you, but since I’ve been an adult, New Phone Book Day rates third next to Birthweek and Martin Luther King Day. I love Martin Luther King Day not only because it’s a great thing civically to recognize Dr. King for his contribution to the world, but also because we get the day off and it’s this free day in January. That rocks.

Anyway, I love New Phone Book Day. It’s the one time of the year where the phone book is as up to date as humanly possible. It’s the best chance you’ll ever have of finding the correct phone number for your calling intent.

I know I’m a freak, but I just love to go through and look up the names of people who moved throughout the year. I love knowing that I will now be able to call them if I should so desire. It’s security in an uncertain time.

Mock me if you will, but I’d be willing to bet that the Taliban doesn’t have an updated phone book.

It’s just one of those anal-retentive things that makes me insanely happy.

I’ll get over it the first time I look up a number and it’s not in the phone book, though. Then I’ll be bitter at Ma Bell once again.

I’ve been hit off the strangest Google searches in the last few days. ‘Thongy’ ‘Right Guard deodorant’ ‘singing belly buttons’ ‘garter belts chez’ ‘Faith Hill’s feet’ ‘peeing into a urinal’ ‘squashed her breasts flat’ ‘when your nose itches your butt itches’ and ‘boobage’.

That is the strangest group of Google hits I’ve ever seen in one 24-hour period. All body or personal undergarment related, too. I always try to look for meaning in these things, but apparently, all this means is that I’m obsessed with my various body parts. I mean, if it were poop and farts too, it would pretty much sum up this whole diary in a nutshell.

I know you could probably care less about the odd Googles this page has gotten but it amuses me all to heck.

We had a ‘Town Hall Meeting’ at work today. Basically, it meant that they walked us all over to the hotel a block away from the office, stuffed us into a room that was roughly 95 degrees and filled with pillars so that 85% of the people could not see a thing, and then sent us on our way. We sat through a two-hour PowerPoint presentation on the state of our building. I was keeping track of corporate stereotypes’. There were two incidents of a person making the quotation hand signals, and the phrase ‘Grow our Business’, which always sounds like poor grammar to me but I suppose it isn’t, was used a whopping eight times. They even tried to spin the loss of a fairly large client by saying ‘We refused to lower the price of our service just to retain business as that’s a poor business strategy, which is a good thing.’ Then came the Q&A period when 295 people all silently wished that no one would ask questions so we could leave the sweltering room and eat our catered lunch while 5 people were oblivious to the group vibe and endlessly asked obscure questions of the upper management honchos, who gladly jumped on the chance to press their own agendas.

‘Are we going to be moving to a larger facility.’

‘I’m glad you asked that question. Currently, we have a lot of real estate, meaning leased facilities and it is possible that the corporation would consolidate into one facility but they most indefinitely would not touch the Green Bay production facilities because we managed to come under budget and grow our business, particularly in my division of Concrete Operations and Customer Retention, maximizing our growth potential and we couldn’t have done it without you people here in Chic’Green Bay Wisconsin’. Give yourself a big hand!’

They’re fond of encouraging us to applaud ourselves. I think they believe that this is a good exchange for a cash bonus. And while we’re all clapping like fools, they’re up there, grinning from ear to ear as though the applause was for them. They don’t even clap, they just stand there, sucking in all of the applause.

Later, we were treated to a lovely catered meal, which was served buffet style. Buffets for 350 people don’t work. Write that down. I busted over to one of the front tables, as we were told we would be sent to the buffet line by table, so I was figuring, hey, front table, first through the buffet line. The Holiday Inn wait staff thwarted us as we were dead last. What is more, the Vice President and my boss’ boss ended up sitting at our table, so we had a bunch of really lame small talk. At one point, the VP asked us for the salt and when he said ‘thank you’ I almost started to applaud myself for the splendid job of salt delivery.

And I wonder why I don’t get a cash bonus.

I shouldn’t complain I guess. After walking back to our offices, I spent the next two hours reading my new phone book and chortling to myself with anal-retentive glee.

Daily recommended dose of Caffeine and Nutrasweet

For some reason, when I’m feeling especially exuberant, as I was yesterday, I get this healthy vibe going on and eschew my normal Diet Cokes and bagels. I think channel my hippy mother, circa 1984 or something. If I take a rototiller to our large side yard and plant okra and echinacea, you have my permission to club me violently over the head with a Spiegel catalog until I come back to my senses.

I had this intense craving for hummus yesterday. Yes. You read that right. Hummus. With cucumbers and possibly a sprout of some sort. It’s a sickness, I tell you. So I tried out this new deli/juice bar and got a hummus hoagie with a bulgar wheat cold salad. Then, because I just didn’t have enough freakishly healthy food, I also ordered carrot juice zinger, which was a convolution of carrot, apple and lemon juice.

I watched as the lady cut up what was possibly the world’s oldest carrot and place it into the juicer, unpeeled, little white hair things still clinging to its rooty body.. Then she dropped in half an apple, complete with core, stem and seeds. Then she put in a lemon peel. It churned into a dirty (!) pitcher, an orange miasma of vitamins and healthy crap. She placed it into a plastic cup (no, it wasn’t a cup, it was too small to be considered a cup, it was a cuplet. I’ve filled urine specimen jars larger than this thing.) and presented it to me.

I was a little apprehensive. It was room temperature, which was scary enough, but it was also two colors. Apparently, the carrot and the apple juice are diametrically opposed and must separate. Little bits of carrot floated on the top of the specimen cuplet like psychedelic pond algae.

I took a swig. It tasted like ass. Carroty ass. It was both woody and vile all at once. If I hadn’t seen the woman make it, I would have sworn it was Essence of houseplant with a dash of Cat Puke.

I pitched the carrot shit as soon as I hit my office. My hummus was good though. The Bulgar tasted like someone had tossed olive oil and garlic into a bunch of insect larvae.

Today, I had me some McDonald’s. Fries and a cheeseburger, please, with an Extra Large Diet Coke.

I am thankful for my new shoe laces!

If you haven’t already, you might want to stop by Eloi’s page and wish him a Happy Belated Birthday. He’s such a cool dude and I think it would make him very happy. Plus, I feel like a loser because I meant to send him an email on Saturday and I totally forgot. Sorry, Eloi!

So this weekend was wacked.

First off: Esteban is working on a cover story so he is virtually invisible. I don’t have such a huge issue with that, but sometimes the only way I know that I’m married is the fact that I wake up next to someone and there is additional laundry. I suppose some people would prefer an invisible spouse to the one.

Yesterday, I didn’t see Esteban even once. He left before I woke up and he came home after I went to bed. This morning, I left, as I always do, before he woke up. Yesterday morning, when I called him at work to see if he wanted to go out to lunch with me (he didn’t have time), I almost said ‘See you tomorrow night’, which I didn’t because it would make him feel bad but it is certainly true.

I attempted to do some Christmas shopping yesterday and managed to buy a white 350 thread count duvet cover, two white 290 thread count pillowcases (no freaking white fitted sheets at T.J.Maxx though, I was pissed), a new picture for my bedroom and a freaky jar of salsa for Esteban (it has the slogan ‘Pain is Good&AO8AvwC9AO8AvwC9- I think he’ll like it). sigh Maybe next time I’ll find actual Christmas presents.

I went craft show hopping with Mafia Grandmother on Saturday. She was fine until we then picked up my Aunt (the other Aunt, not Aunt Brunhilda’ I really should think of a nick for her’ I’ll call her Aunt Drizella) and then suddenly, she took the opportunity to affect her Mafia attitude. We were discussing Alzheimer’s disease (which my great-grandmother suffered from) and I explained that it was all due to plaques that form between the brain’s synapses. Now, I realize that I was talking to an audience that consisted of a woman who did not get past the eighth grade and a woman who barely graduated high school and has worked in a paper mill for the last twenty years. Not to toot my own horn, but I have a freaking degree in Psychology and had entire classes devoted to the illnesses of the brain and one class which was entirely devoted to aging and Alzheimer’s Disease (toot toot). I think I know that of which I speak.

Aunt’s case was that there was no Alzheimer’s disease and it was just something that they made up to explain aging. Mafia Grandmother took on a look of superiority and then said that her doctor told her that there was no such thing as senility, it was ALL Alzheimer’s. I tried to explain that they were actually different, that the presence of the plaques indicate one diagnosis, and then there was common dementia with no plaque present and then there was organic brain disorder, which presents like Alzheimer’s but was actually due to drug and alcohol abuse during life. M.G. snooted and reiterated what her 76-year-old doctor had told her.

Keep in mind that this is the same woman who, during this same car ride, when discussing one of the craft shows, said, ‘Isn’t that at the place that had the scare with all the Amtrak?’

Yes, Grandma. They were afraid that a cross-country fucking train was going to jump the tracks in Chicago and make its way over hill and dale, across the state of Wisconsin, and then barrel into them. That’s it exactly.

I don’t know why I allow her to flummox me this way. This is the same woman who deliberately puts lemon seeds in her lemon meringue pie so people will know that she made it with real lemons. This is her logic. Better to have someone chip a tooth or choke to death on a damn seed than have them think I merely opened a box of Jell-o instant pudding.

Personally, if your pie tastes that close to Jell-o, perhaps you should either not go through the bother or change your recipe, huh? I’m just saying.

So I casually mentioned the upcoming Thanksgiving dinner. We’ve had Thanksgiving dinner at M.G.’s for as long as I’ve been alive, and my mom confirms that it’s been that way as long as SHE has been alive too. It’s pretty much a given, but with the death of Betty this year, M.G. is alone and felt that she didn’t want to go through all the hassle of making dinner. Apparently, Aunt Brunhilda said, ‘Well, come over to my house and I’ll make dinner.’ So M.G. said yes.

But the thing is that the invitation did not extend to the rest of the family’ meaning my mom and her offspring, basically. Everyone else who can be there (i.e. Doesn’t have to work) will be there. ‘I don’t know what your mother and you people are doing, though.’ M.G. sniffed.

So basically, they’re having Thanksgiving and we’re not invited.

Maybe the Cornish game hen that Aunt Brunhilda inevitably will try to pass off as a turkey will not be enough to feed 11 people. Maybe she’s afraid that if she invites people who are not children nor elderly–people who are easily controlled–the gluttony fest will somehow affect her children and the shock of seeing people eat will make them balloon up like the Underdog float in the Macy’s parade.

Good lord.

So I called Mom and asked her if she was aware that our family was Thanksgiving-less this year and she didn’t. But this is so much the way our family puts the fun in Dysfunction. Another year, my mom got drunk and mentioned that good old granddaughter Weetabix’s lesbian friend Mary Kaye thought Aunt Drizella was possibly a lesbian. M.G. then told Aunt Brunhilda who told Aunt Drizella that she had heard something horrible about her but she needed to talk to Mafia Grandma. Then Mafia Grandma told her about the lesbian comment and Aunt Drizella shrugged it off. Mafia Grandma then countered and said that Drizella shouldn’t be so easy-going and she should be upset that her niece was spreading rumors about her (note: I never said a word! Mary Kaye said it, but apparently it was all guilt by association). After much riding by Mafia Grandmother, Aunt Drizella got worked into a snit.

Then the entire family was mad at my mom (for talking about the comment), myself (for making the comment, even though I didn’t) and Mo (because she’s my little sister and I obviously tell her what to think, so she must think that Aunt Drizella’s a lesbian too), but they all didn’t want to TELL us they were mad at us. Why, you might ask? Because if they did, they’d have to admit that my Mom told M.G. this while she was drunk and they don’t like to talk about that.

So, the Saturday night before our traditional Easter get-together, Mom called Mafia Grandma to see how she wanted her to make the ham she was bringing to the family dinner’ bake it before hand and bring it over hot or make it at M.G.’s house. Mafia Grandmother, using her best passive-aggressive tactics, informs my mother that she should make her own dinner for her family because we weren’t invited to the family gathering. Immediately afterwards, Mom left a frantic and apologetic message on our answering machine stating that she had screwed up big and we weren’t invited (never telling me what happened, however). Mo left a similar message, stating that Mom had repeated something I had said and now we were persona non grata with the rest of the family. Mo had tried to call M.G. to see why she was upset with all of us’ the reason had been that we had repeated this comment amongst ourselves. Mo pointed out that M.G. not only repeated the comment to Aunt Drizella but also to Aunt Brunhilda. This was of no matter, because Mafia Grandma is exempt from all violations of passive-aggressive dysfunctionality. She makes the rules therefore she cannot break them. What is more, they would have told us that we weren’t invited to the family gathering if we had CALLED THEM to ASK if we were invited to Easter brunch. So they were not to blame for the poor timing.

It just makes me a little grumpy that I have all these toxic people in my family.

I think someone dumped a case of Drano into my gene pool.

On a brighter note, I started out the day on a happy cheery sort of way, which is fairly rare for a Monday morning. I got to wear my Docs with new Doc Marten shoelaces, a present from Bfee, paired with black pants, black hooded vest and lime green turtleneck. I look tres’ cute. How cool is Bfee? She sent me a bunch of Doc Marten laces, some darned neato Dirty Girl lip stuff, a computer ‘goddess’ and one of the most bitchin refrigerator magnets I’ve seen in a long time. It has a 1950’s woman pictured and the caption ‘She could not decide if she should use her power for good or evil’. That’s pretty much me in a nutshell right there.

This morning, as I left for work, there was a fine layer of frost blanketing the world and the air had that sparkly misty quality you see when the first sunlight hits the frozen street. And I remember thinking, ‘How wonderful it is to be alive! I love my life’ and then a little hint of dread passed over me because the last time I remembered thinking this was the morning of September 11th. So now I feel terribly guilty about it all and I hope that this plane crash not another terrorist attack and just a coincidence that it’s almost exactly two months since that nightmare.

Pa! Weetabix’s in the Lambrusco again!

The older I get, the more obsessed with cheese I become.

No. Not the cheese that made the state of Wisconsin great. Fromage, baby.

I should hate Enya…. but I don’t. I find it oddly soothing. I anticipate that eventually, I’ll start to crave Spam and Velveeta sammiches. With ketchup, if you please, on Wonder bread–That which never molds or decays, thank you.

Good lord.

We just added 72 square feet to our kitchen. I’m excited about this for one reason: I’ll have a place to display my metal lunch box collection. I’m thinking of buying a 1950’s-esque chrome table with flashy red vinyl chairs… the kind with little sparkles in the vinyl… just to match the keystone of my collection, my “Mickey Mouse Club” lunchbox.

I carried a Mickey Mouse Club lunchbox to my little religious school, grades two through four. In Fifth grade, I decided that a plain brown paper sack was more desirable than a metal Mickey box which slightly smelled of overripe bananas and natural peanut butter. Fate has punished me for scorning it so, as a replica cost me $45 on Ebay, and that was WITHOUT the thermos.

Damn Fate.

I spent the day trekking around town with my Mafia Grandma, going from craft show to craft show. I actually heard the words “Oh, that’s a cute use of an old tie”, referring to a paisley angel someone had made out of Uncle Earl’s Sunday strangler. As the words left my mouth, I felt the little portion of taste I’ve managed to cling to, curl up and die in agony.

I’m listening to the love theme from “St. Elmo’s Fire” as I write this.

I think it’s just my incredible sense of nostalgia which tends to sweep me up, especially when the weather turns sour. Remember, I think to myself, when times were tough and you played with your Fisher Price Castle? Remember back in seventh grade when you had to change for gym class into those nasty public school gym suits? Remember?

I want a Fisher Price Castle with all the accessories. I want to play with it and pretend I’m the Princess of Fromage. I’ll have a big giant (Donnie Osmund doll) come and threaten my Little People’s very existance and then the knight, helped by the purple dragon and possible the alligator under the moat, even though he’s only paper, he doesn’t let his two-dimensionality get him down, will save the day, and maybe the Giant Osmund will be helpful putting the flag on the turret of the castle or something, I don’t know.

I’m totally tipsy on Lambrusco right now. This probably makes no sense whatsoever. Oh well. Maybe it makes more sense than when I write on Ny-quil. You be the judge. I’m going to see if “Everyone loves Raymond” is on. Sort of like aversion therapy… if it’s not, then I’ll use a little Urkel… that eponymous bastard is on 24 hours a day.

I hate him so, that little puberty-deprived jerk.

It’s a wonder he still stays married to me

8:32 pm

Weetabix: I’m not liking my stomach today.

Esteban: Don’t be ridiculous. I love your stomach.

Weetabix: You’re not even looking at me when you say it… you’re looking off in the distance.

Esteban: That’s because my eyes are sore from staring at a computer screen all day. You’re just all blurry and grey.

Weetabix: Fat grey blurry blob.

Esteban: No… do you want to go out and get dessert?

Weetabix: I just told you that I was not liking my stomach today and you ask if we should go out and get dessert?

Esteban: I’m sorry, that was probably poorly timed…. Did you have a good day at work today?

Weetabix: Yeah, I guess. I chatted with Yorick for awhile. I was pretty busy, but it’s Friday so that’s nice.

Esteban: That’s good sweetie… do you want to go get dessert?

Weetabix: Esteban!

Esteban: What’s the flavor of the day today.

Weetabix: I’m not saying.

Esteban: I probably don’t want to know.

Weetabix: You probably don’t.

Esteban: If it’s “Death By Chocolate” then you should jump up and say “Esteban, it’s Death By Chocolate and we must go immediately and get some!”

Weetabix: You should probably go get some then.

Esteban: You’re just making that up.

(pause)

Weetabix: It IS Death By Chocolate

Esteban: It’s going to be Death By Urine if I don’t go to the bathroom right now.

(sounds of peeing, flushing, handwashing)

Esteban: Let’s go then.

Weetabix: You can’t just demand that I do whatever you want.

Esteban: If I were demanding anything, I’d be saying “Give me oral pleasure” like this (Esteban affects a suave, hip tone of voice and accent) “Give me oral pleasure baby!”

Weetabix:

Esteban: So you’re just going to ignore me then?

Weetabix: I’m in my pajamas right now… I don’t even have a bra on.

Esteban: Really? (he wiggles his eyebrows) No bra? (He affects the accent again) “Give me oral pleasure”

Weetabix: Let’s go get your ice cream.

Esteban: You’re going like that?

Weetabix: I have my sweatshirt on over.

Esteban: You just have socks on.

Weetabix: It’s dry out.

Esteban: It’s winter out.

Weetabix: It’s ALMOST barely winter… this is probably the last time I’ll be able to do this.

Esteban (you can see his breath): It’s winter NOW…. are your feet cold?

Weetabix (scurrying to car): Yes. Hurry.

Esteban: You only do this so I have to go in to get the ice cream.

Weetabix: Yep.

Esteban: You still should give me oral pleasure.

It’s a wonder he still stays married to me

8:32 pm

Weetabix: I’m not liking my stomach today.

Esteban: Don’t be ridiculous. I love your stomach.

Weetabix: You’re not even looking at me when you say it… you’re looking off in the distance.

Avasty ye scurvy dog sinners! Arrrrrrrr!

I was flipping through the channels last night and I saw the weirdest thing.

It was the nun who lives on Channel 11. I mean, she always freaks me out. I think she might be one of those reanimated corpses, stuffed and preserved like Jeremy Bentham but animated by the Disney wizards behind The Hall of Presidents. I think her name is Mother Frangelica or something. I imagine that her life is very strange, taking piddle breaks between commercials and whatnot, having a little dressing room with a crucifix in glitter and the name ‘Mother Frangelica’ emblazoned in holy ochre.

It was a little strange, though. Last night, she was wearing a patch over one eye. Like a pirate. A pirate nun. I kept envisioning her rendition of the ‘Holy Father’ punctuated with ‘Arrrrr’ for dramatic flavor.

How politically incorrect is that? I’m making fun of this poor tele-nun who obviously had a stroke or something. I am most certainly going straight to hell.

But that wasn’t the weird thing. The surreal thing was that she was sitting there selling religious Christmas stockings. One had a stitched Nativity scene on it and the other had an angel. All for the low low price of $39.99. And there was a number on the bottom of the screen and a quantity number up in the corner, just like the Home Schlupping Network.

I almost called to see if they had any Pope hats for sale. I’ve always felt that I’d look great in a Pope hat.

But how surreal is it that Mother Frangelica the Pirate Nun was now hawking over-inflated Christmas wares? I wonder if they put callers on the show? ‘Hi Mother Frangelica, I’m a long time watcher, first time caller!’ ‘Bless you my child’ have you tried our lemon pepper hosts before?’ ‘Oh, yes, they go wonderfully with our Friday night steak– er, TUNA steaks!’

I wonder if there’s a God credit card you can get to charge your purchases from the God Shopping Channel. I wonder what kind of interest rates it charges’. Which brings up tons of strange issues. Maybe God shouldn’t charge any interest on your credit card but if you don’t pay it back, you get to burn in the fires of eternal torment? But then, I sort of think credit card debt is a task of Sisyphus as it is’ lease your soul now at 18.5 percent!

Yep. I can feel my backside getting warm from the fires of Lucifer already.

Speaking of television religion, the cable guide last night gave the name of a program on A&E or some such ‘Jerry Fallwell: Minister of Morels’.

Doesn’t that sound like a cooking show? ‘Watch as Reverend Jerry shows you how to fillet the elusive morels for a lovely Christian fungi pie!’

Another strange mispelling word play: Some of the lights for the sign on the Hobby Lobby building have burnt out.

Instead of reading

FRAMES
CRAFTS

The sign now reads

F AME

CHAF S

Fame does chafe. If you’re not careful, you’ll get a heat rash.
