Joy of Joy my Esteban returns!!! (cue graceful choreography)

So Esteban is now home. I made a brief yet vital misjudgement in the amount of time it would take him to ready to be picked up and he phoned me just as I was submitting the last diary entry. “Were you going to pick me up?” “Uh…. uh….” I frantically looked at the clock. His plane wasn’t supposed to even land until 2:08, and then there would be disembarking, luggage to be picked up, he would have to make his way past the armed guards and humvees, etc. I figured that I would leave our house at 2:00, getting to the airport at 2:20, which would probably coincide with his walking out of the doors of the airport. This was not to be. Apparently, this was the one time out of a hundred times of his planes being late or his luggage being lost, that his plane arrived before it was scheduled. I suspect that maybe the pilots were drag racing other planes in the air, popping wheelies and the like. Probably not, though.

He was starving when I finally picked him up and apparently had a horrible day thus far. He had left his cellphone charger in the hotel, then left his phone on the plane from Denver to Minneapolis, basically causing him to walk the length of the Minneapolis airport three times, wearing a flannel coat and lugging his laptop.

He wanted to get something to eat and wanted to eat at the Butt Splinter Sports Bar…(Yes, Outfoxed, I’m shamelessly plugging a previously written entry! ;).

I sat down very gingerly, after thouroughly inspecting the chair. We chatted and smiled at each other and were reminded again how great it is to be married to ones best friend in the whole world. He makes me laugh so much some times, I’m amazed that he’s so funny. He wasn’t always this funny.

Weird thing: He put this business card in front of me for a rather big computer company. It had a woman’s name on it, but then, in big loopy handwriting, another name written next to it. My first thought was that the first name and the handwritten name made the name of someone I went to high school with, but there was no way that Esteban met up with that girl in freaking Denver?

It turned out that was exactly what had happened. Esteban had been sitting on a panel and during the break, he was approached by this extremely tall woman, roughly our age, who said “Esteban?” And he said “Yes” thinking she was a reader of his magazine or something. Then she said “Are you married to Weetabix?” and at this, he was a little freaked out, but he replied in the affirmative (At least he’s not ashamed of me!). It turns out that she read the bio on the Class of 1989 webpage that I run for my high school alma mater and recognized Esteban’s rather unusual last name.

How freaky is THAT??? It’s just too funny.

I feel bad, though, because I let both my personal web page and that high school webpage go down when Homestead revoked their free webpage service. But I cannot be blamed for lax webmistressship… the weather was warm and I usually only do things like that in the cold weather months… this diary being a strange exception.

Buffy talk ahead…. if you haven’t seen the most recent episodes and don’t want to know… don’t go!

Oh my lord. How cool was the musical episode? I had to go and download all of the songs! Plus, Buffy and Spike kissage toward the end!

Bunnays!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was giddy, I tell you, giddy like a school girl watching that thing. It was a miasma of joketude! “I think this part is mostly filler” “His penis has disease from the Chumash Tribe!” “She needs backup… Anya Tara!”

Have I mentioned before how much of a musical geek I am? I lurve musicals. I wish I could live in a 1940’s musical.

I guess it’s a stereotype of us fat chicks. I hate to fit the mold, so to speak, but I don’t entirely because I haven’t got a witty gay friend to be snarky with nor do I wear extensive amounts of lipstick and an unnaturally dyed but extremely flattering coif. Not that these things don’t need to be fixed, mind you. Also, I look like a train wreck on the dance floor. I could use some fat girl dancing lessons. This is why I can’t live in a musical. I can’t dance to save my life. I would so enjoy wearing those great 40’s fashions, though. I’ve always wanted a finger-wave, too.

I had more intent when I started this entry, but I can’t remember. I’m just giddy that my sweetie is back home. That is all.

He makes me Com-Plete!…. nah, that’s too cheesy when it’s not being sung with a big old lesbian double entendre.

We play both types… Christina AND Britney

Sean “Puffy” Combs stated in this months issue of “Jane” that he feels the MTV show TRL is diverse and appeals to all music fans.

That reminds me of that line in The Blues Brothers when Jake (I think) asks what kind of music they like at the bar where they’re going to be playing and the bartender says “Oh, we like both types… Country and Western!”

I guess they laid off 200 employees at MTV last week. No on-air personalities were let go, however. If they riffed 200 people and kept that freak Jessie guy, what kind of people do they HIRE at MTV?

And, more importantly, can I get a job there?

Just a quickie, because I’m off to pick up Esteban from the airport.

I’ll bet all two of my male readers’ ears perked up… quickie? quickie? Did she say quickie?

Last weekend, I was driving around listening to the Packer game on the radio, trying to retain a little fall factor even though the trees have pretty much given up the fight, I stopped to get some gas. I was waiting for my tank to fill up with incredible $1.16 a gallon gas… off subject for a second… can you believe that crap? In the beginning of September, it was $1.79 a gallon (with the exception of that brief stint on September 11, when it was something like $4.13 a gallon) and now it’s dropped more than $.60? Did they find more gas? Did the government lean on the oil producers, saying “You know, we’ll forget about these little incidents of price gouging, but we think that you need to quit with the crazy gas prices before we remember that you get your product from the Middle East and start to regulate the shit out of you, ‘k?”.

Anyway, as I was standing there, a guy walked by me. There was nothing too incredible about him. Just a normal Wisconsin guy… the kind I normally have no interest in whatsoever. I usually go for the intellectual types, the artsy-fartsy guys…. think Theatre Majors. Honestly, I’ve never actually GONE OUT with one of those types of guys, but those are the guys I used to lust after. Little wire-rimmed glasses, journal in one hand, all-natural fiber-wearing types. I’ve never been a person for the machos, the “Mel Gibsons”, the hunter/fisherman kind of thing. Steven Segall only reminds me that we are only a few evolutionary steps from apes. Social Darwinism is at play, here, I’m certain, but it is what it is.

Anyway, this guy walks past me. He was more or less fit, not terribly muscular (I think I’m intimidated by muscles, actually), but still looked very strong. He was driving a humongous pick-up truck–extended cab, emaculate, the kind that has four wheels in the back. Honestly, that seems so stupid to me. I mean, tires cost enough as it is, why would you want to have a truck with SIX tires? Are you trying to tell the world “Hey, look at me! I’m so manly and rugged that I need two extra wheels to do my manly things.” Whatever.

He was wearing camo pants, hiking boots, and a tight black turtleneck shirt. He was balding but his hair was neatly cut. Think a younger version of “Major Dad” sans mustache.

Anyway, all I could think was “VA-Va-Va-VOOM!!! Yummm-me!” and I did the “Risky Business” look, as I unconcsiously lowered my sunglasses and watched him as he strode manfully across the parking lot.

But it gave me the wigguns. What the heck was THAT all about? I mean, hunter guy? Hunter guy in a Testosterone Mobile?

So I discussed this yesterday with Carissa because this is her type of guy. And I was explaining that I didn’t get it but I think it has something to do with evolution. It has been postulated that women desire very manly men when they are “fertile” and desire sensitive Tom Hanks kind of guys when they are not. So it’s this weird evolutionary thing: marry Tom Hanks, but get impregnated by Arnold Schwarzeneger.

And that makes me sad. Because the world does not necessarily need more Arnolds or Jean Claude Van Dumbs or even more Stallones, despire reports that Sly is actually rather intelligent.

Luckily for me, I married a big intimidating sensitive guy. Speaking of which, got to go pick him up from the airport now, so I’m ending this diary without making a point. Actually, if you’ve been reading me for any amount of time, you should be used to that by now. Ciao.

The biggest spoiler of them all!!!!

I’m feeling all spoilery. I succumbed to spoiler temptation with Buffy because I just had to know what was going to happen between her and Spike. I am such the spoiler whore. Once I start, I just can’t stop.

Uber-chocolate and uber-angst

So yesterday was rather uneventful. Esteban and went to our favorite little bagel shop, where I got a sun dried tomato & parmesan bagel and a grande hot cocoa, Esteban got his plain bagel with green olive cream cheese (arrrgh, how anyone can eat that is beyond me!) and Stewart’s fountain cherry soda. We then drove to the little park where I used to hang out as an adolescent and proceeded to nosh on our brunch in quiet contentment. My cocoa was uber-chocolatey, even after I stirred in the whipped cream on the top. After awhile, it started to taste so chocolaty and sweet and it was only “Tepid Cocoa”, not really Hot Cocoa. It was like a man made entirely of chocolate took a big chocolate dump into a cup, slapped a cardboard hand protector on it, and sold it for $3.15 a glass.

Then we went back home and watched the Packer game. I was in a strange head place because I’m a total Packer fan, but on my fantasy football team, my favorite point-earner for my team, The Congested Hedgehogs is Keshawn Johnson for Tampa Bay. So I was torn…. I wanted Tampa Bay to get a touchdown, as long as it was with my man Keshawn and only if it wasn’t going to put them ahead of the Packers, unless that meant that the Packers would counter with a field goal with my kicker, Ryan Longwell. It was all confusing and at one point, I was so internally torn I had to stop watching and go purchase Esteban some antiperspirant for his trip.

He’s leaving for Denver today (home of another one of my players, Duane Carswell) and I will be very sad. I’m a little nervous about the whole flying thing for him…. This will be his first business trip since Sept. 11, but in the same vein, I’m certain that the terrorists will not pull the same trick twice, choosing rather to hit us in a new place that we didn’t realize was vulnerable. Esteban hasn’t mentioned any misgivings about traveling, although he did state that any terrorist who tried to pull anything on a flight that he was on would be very sorry indeed. Given that Esteban is six foot two, extremely solid, and looks menacing to those who do not know him (and some who do), I tend to agree with him.

As I write this, Esteban is in the shower, getting ready to leave for the airport. I hate it when he travels. He doesn’t like to travel either. I don’t mind so much being alone but I miss him terribly when he’s gone. No one rubs my back for me; no one tells me I’m pretty. On the plus side, I get to sleep on his side of the bed all night and drool upon his pillow with wild abandon, so there are plus sides too.

Today, I had to sit through four hours of ‘training’ on a new software release that I will be supporting as of Monday. This was our first look at the software and we won’t actually get our hands on it until one day before the users get it. Nice. At one point, they were demonstrating a new feature and I started asking questions about it’ does the feature go away if you do this? Does it come back if you refresh it? And the look on the programmers’ faces’ every time I’d ask a question, they’d say ‘Let’s see what it does’ because they obviously didn’t have a fucking clue. After my eighth question about functionality, one of them looked at me and said in mock seriousness which was halfway serious, ‘Give us a break! We just added this function!’. Excuse me? So you don’t test it or supply functionality across all dimensions? HULLO???!?!?!

Esteban chided me the other day for not taking a more steady approach to my writing. He figures that this diary is my sole creative outlet, which it guiltily is. He asked me ‘So do it unless your life’s ambition is to learn all there is to know about Windows XP?’

And he’s so right. I’ve got to write more fiction. I don’t want to be explaining what a tilde is or a backslash for the rest of my days. While this diary has been an excellent exercise in willpower and discipline, it’s been lousy for actual creative process.

Note to self: fix that.

Does it make me a weenie if I cried during Monsters, Inc?

So who’s the biggest loser in all of Loserdom?

That would be me.

Friday night, prime going out night, time to indulge in all that is hedonistic, satisfying and possibly perverted, guess what I did.

Scrapbooked.

With my boss. In a conference room at work.

How’s THAT for excitement?!?!?!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I only got four pages done too. Even when I’m being a loser, I fail to be a loser well.

Yesterday morning, I got up and scooted off to my very favorite craft show of the season. I don’t know why it’s my very favorite craft show’ there’s really nothing special about it. It’s at a high school that I didn’t even attend. Actually, I would have attended it most likely if my mom hadn’t gotten a bug up her ass to own horses, so we moved from that suburb out to the country where then she ended up divorcing my wicked stepfather and moving to a slum in the city, beginning our nomadic odyssey throughout the rental properties in Green Bay.

Where was I? Oh yes, craft show. I don’t know why it’s my favorite, it just is. For some reason I look forward to it. I think because I actually purchase things at that one, as opposed to the others where I pay my buck, wander around sneering at the crocheted beer can hats and many painted wood gimcrack, and then wander away feeling aimless and unfulfilled.

I can’t believe I finally found an opportunity to use the word ‘gimcrack’. I had to memorize that in 11th grade English and this is the first time in my life I’ve ever used it. Wow.

So anyway, I drove with excitement to the little suburb, which incidentally is as far as you can get from my house and still be considered part of the greater Green Bay area. When I got there, steeling myself for a hassle trying to find a parking spot, I found ample parking. In fact, no cars at all. No sign on the door. Nothing. Other carloads of women were also driving up, sitting there stupefied and then driving away. I drove slowly home, bummed that there would be no sneering at the gimcrack today. In fact, I drove by no less than three signs advertising that missing craft show, so I know that I had the right day. I’m just stumped as a chopped down rainforest.

I got home and Esteban had managed to crawl out of bed and ensconce himself on the sofa. We went out for lunch and then drove around getting new waterbed conditioner stuff and a cable to fix the lawnmower thing. We discussed all of our ambitious projects for the day. Esteban planned to fix the lawnmower, edge all of the concrete for easy snowblowing, start the snowblower to make sure it was working ok, mow the lawn to mulch the few leaves we had, and then make some progress on the pile of dishes that is threatening to take over our kitchen. I had planned to sand, wash, and then stain the thing around the window in our front door, work on the laundry because it smells like unwashed anal cleft in our bedroom and it is hard to be in the mood for sleep or other bedroom activities when you’ve got unwashed ass aromatherapy going on, and clean the living room.

We always over plan. We’re overachievers in theory and lazy asses in practice. Esteban did better than I did. He fixed the lawnmower and did two-thirds of the edging. I read a book and lay on our bed, breathing through my mouth so I didn’t have to smell the laundry funk. At one point, I put away some towels. Go me.

Then, we managed to make some progress on our home improvement plans. Currently, the kitchen expansion project progresses. Ward has built up the floor in what used to be the breezeway and has now removed the wall separating the kitchen and the breezeway, thus our kitchen is now 72 square feet larger. He’s going to put another layer on the floor, then finish the walls. At one point, we’ll need to remove the linoleum and put new stuff down. That’s where I come in. No, I’m not going to put down the linoleum’ cripes, this isn’t Trading Spaces and Ward isn’t that cute carpenter Ty. I had to PICK OUT the new flooring. That’s my involvement right there. At one point, I anticipate painting, but that’s about it.

Yes, I know what a useless tool I am. If they needed copy written about the project, I’d be so there, but as it is, there’s not much I can do. I was built for comfort, not functionality!

So we picked out some flooring and found that it will be $600 to put flooring down. Yipes. That sucks. That’s most of a surround sound system, right there. That’s a king size mission bed. I don’t know why we don’t just staple $1 bills to the floor and then cover them with Contact paper. It would be cheaper.

Then we went to see Monsters, Inc., which was extremely cute. Esteban’s verdict ‘Eh’. I think I just enjoyed hearing the little kids’ reactions in the audience, although at one point, they showed a monster scaring the snot out of a little kid and in the audience, one kid burst out in giggles. There’s a kid who needs counseling.

We also went to dinner at’. Wait for it&AO8AvwC9AO8AvwC9- a NON-SPORTS BAR!! Wow! We were going to go someplace nouveau, but at the last minute, I decided I wanted beef, bun and cheese, and most places were packed, so we ended up at a little bar up the street from our home. Damn, it was good too! We only had to sit through one off-color joke from the bartender. Oh, and there was a sign above the door which read ‘Private Property: No Unauthorized Trespassing Unless You’ve Got Big Boobs’. Guess I’m in.

Hope your weekend was grand!

Open up and say “Gaaaaahhhhhhh!!!!”

I went to the dentist yesterday’. Actually, not my dentist as he is on vacation, one of his Dr. John clones. I had never seen this one before. I was lying in the chair with my little paper drool bib on when she came up behind me and introduced herself. I turned my head to look at her and’oh my god’she was twelve years old. Seriously. She looked like a Girl Scout.

The whole thing was weird. Of course, they took x-rays. They always take the damn x-rays. They always tell me that we haven’t taken damn x-rays for a year, but I just know that they took them last time. It’s this whole x-ray scam they’ve got going, I’m certain. I think they just like to stick those horrible little cardboard torture devices in your mouth.

For some reason, Dr. Puberty likes to do the cleaning herself. Apparently, the girl just likes to get her hands full of tartar. Not that I’m a big tartar mouth or anything. I actually have pretty decent teeth. Dr. John always tells me that if everyone had teeth like me, he’d have gone into law with his father. That’s his wacky bordering on geeky sense of humor.

Also, normally, I don’t have the scraping thing done. I have this ultra sonic thing that kind of blasts off the tartar with sound. That’s probably why my teeth are in such good shape’. I listened to some pretty loud music as a teenager. The ultra sonic cleansing means no scary metal hook and it also goes much faster than a normal cleaning. About five to ten minutes with the Master Blaster and then we’re off to the polishing stage. But apparently, Dr. Puberty doesn’t use that thing or maybe one must be eighteen before they are allowed to use it. Instead, she scraped and scraped away for possibly four hours. At one point, her hand slipped and that freaky metal hook thing went flying into my cheek. I wanted to point out that never once in my life had a sound wave ever made me tremble in fear of a possible hole in my cheek, but she had four fingers, a mirror, a suction tube and her elbow in my mouth, so instead it came out ‘Mfffph mulled mullet moped!’ On the plus side, I’m very hip with my new piercing.

Finally, she finished and allowed an assistant to do the polishing. Then she lectured me on not flossing behind my retainer, told me I have two cavities (WHAT??), and tried to sell me some cookies for a fundraiser. Apparently, her little Future Dentist Society is trying to earn enough money for a field trip to clean the teeth on Mount Rushmore. I hope she uses more care on George’s teeth than on mine.

At one point, she quizzed me on the proper method of flossing and then handed me a mirror. Is it just me or does everyone else look like the bearded lady at the dentist? That light opens every pore on my face, you can see pimples I had no idea I had and also pimples weeks yet to come’. My skin looks like a topical relief map of the Andes Mountains, complete with cannibalistic soccer team. Also, apparently, I am one hirsute woman. I mean, I knew that my eyebrows get a little out of hand, but I did not realize that I was sporting what appeared to be, under that dentist’s light, a full beard and mustache to rival the that of the members of ZZTop.

When I was making the appointment to have my two (WTF? TWO????) cavities filled by Dr. John, thank you very much, I peeked at my chart. I have been visiting Dr. John since November 24, 1982. Nineteen years.

I quizzed the receptionist about what my 20-year anniversary gift would be’ perhaps a diamond encrusted tooth broach? A free tooth whitening service? Maybe a little license plate cover, bordered with gleaming white teeth, similar to the ones they give the people who give blood. It was for not. Apparently, they don’t give Frequent Flosser Miles or anything.

When I fled to my car, I had lost my Chia-Face and was back to semi-normal.

Note to self: pluck every damn hair from face before going back to the dentist.

This morning, as I was blow-drying my hair, I saw something out of the corner of my eye

sort of fall off my head’ and dangle there! I backed away and found that it was a two-inch long spider, dangling three centimeters away from my face.

I shot a bunch of hot air at it with my blow dryer. I don’t think I killed it’ it’s merely well-coiffed and fluffy now.

Mornings where the first words out of your mouth are ‘GAAAAHHHHH!!!’ never bode well.

Odd Millionaire or sociopathic misanthrope– you decide

You know, a few weeks back on Saturday Night Live, they had a skit about ‘Where are the Now’ for Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and it got me thinking.

What the fuck was up with that movie? Wonka is a freaking sociopath! River of chocolate’or river of lost souls? And that fucked up boat ride with Wonka screaming that messed up chant about ‘will the rowers stop rowing?’ And I think that at one point, they beheaded a chicken. I’m not making that up, either. I swear they beheaded a chicken in that movie. And worms’ there were worms in it too. I think the filmmakers were reliving some weird acid flashbacks or bad trips.

I mean, Veruca Salt always struck me as having the Electra complex as deigned by Freud. I’m willing to bet that there’s a porn movie takeoff of the movie ‘Willy Wanker and the Cock-A-Lot Factory’ complete with Veruca exclaiming ‘I want it now Daddy!’

And the Oompa Loompas’. God, an entire book could be written on the messed up thing with the Oompa Loompas. They don’t like fat people, that’s for sure, which is ironic, since they work in a chocolate factory. And that bizarre dance they do where some of them stand on their heads and the others grab their feet? That’s messed up, right there. Are the Oompa Loompas asexual? I don’t remember any female Oompas! Maybe they were busy beheading the chickens.

Wanna scare the shit out of the Taliban? Show them that movie. Show them how we’ll suck them up a tube full of liquid chocolate or turn them into a big fucking blueberry. That will turn their bowels to jelly, right there. And the fact that this is a kid’s movie’. That explains every problem that the Boomers have with the Gen Xers’. Look at what they gave us to watch to shut us up as kids!

That and Sleestacks, it’s a wonder we managed to become productive members of society whatsoever!

I do believe in spooks… I do I do I do I do believe in spooks!

Here’s that ghost story I promised:

First off, you should know that my mother was nomadic in my earlier childhood. To get some idea of exactly how nomadic she was, I have lived in no less than twenty different homes (not including my dorm room in college) in my life and only four of them were in the last ten years, so imagine moving sixteen times in twenty years. Probably why I’m such a freak’. No stability.

When I was about nine or ten, my mother, Mo and I, lived in an older two-story brick house. We rented the bottom half and an older lady lived upstairs. The older lady moved out after awhile, to live with her daughter, so my mother rented the top half of the house too, so that my sister and I could each have our own rooms. My sister got what was the “living room” area of the upstairs apartment (it had once been the master bedroom, and I got the actual bedroom of the ‘apartment’). My room was really pretty with floral wallpaper and everything, very feminine. Across the room from the door, there was another door that lead into a very smallish room, with slanted ceilings (it was in the “gable” of the house) and a very small window. Off of this little room was a very little door that entered into a part of the attic.

I was pretty excited about the prospect of having my own room once again (we’d lived in so houses, and most of the time, I had my own room. Plus, Mo was a huge pain when she was five and was always trying to get me into trouble, which was stupid on her part because I would just pummel her for it.).

I even moved my desk in the little room so I would have an ‘office’ (to do whatever important business things that a nine-year-old would do, I suppose) but for some reason I named it “the nursery” even though I was older than that doll age and there was little physical evidence of the room ever being used as such. It was always extremely cold in there and after a month, I moved my desk back into the main room. It actually bothered me, having anything of mine, anything associated with me in that room. I was also extremely uneasy about having that door open, and I would even prop things up against it, because sometimes, even though it had a pretty good latch, it would open by itself in the middle of the night.

Getting scared yet? You should.

Picture my room: you enter the room from the corner of one wall. On that same wall is the closet. On the wall directly opposite the entry door, the door into the ‘nursery’. On the fourth wall, a set of double windows on the side of the house (the streetlight at night shown through the windows onto the wall which from the entrance to the door to the nursery).

I had this thing when I slept: I couldn’t sleep with my back to an opening because something could come up and get me when my back was turned. I always put my bed so that it was up against one wall. The only way I could place the bed and NOT have my back to the nursery AND the closet (because spooky things come out of closets too, you know) was to place it against the far wall, leaving the door to the nursery at the foot of my bed. This is the logic of a nine-year-old.

Then, I specifically remember one night; I woke up and saw something. I thought my mother was in the room. Standing in front of the door to the ‘nursery’, at my feet, was an adult shape, but it was all shadows. I think that I covered my head and tried to go back to sleep, because, as you all know, your average twin-sized comforter is a ghost and monster repellant. Another time, when I was sick and feverish, I woke up and the shape was back. I had been extremely thirsty and wanted to call out to my mom to get me a drink of water, but I couldn’t summon the energy to call to her.

I got the distinct impression that I had called out to my mom in my head, and the figure was answering the call. I sat up a little bit, to see if it was shadows from the window or something, but the figure remained. Then I let out a bloody scream for my mom and the figure rushed across the room to the door leading into the hall. It passed directly through the light coming off of the street, and it was definitely a solid black or shrouded figure. I got the impression that it was a sad lady somehow, although I have no idea where I got that impression.

I never told my mom because I didn’t think that she would believe me. Then, after a few more months, my mom moved us back downstairs because she could no longer afford the rent for the upstairs. We moved again after another year.

The strange thing about this, which makes me think that it wasn’t just a nine-year-old’s active imagination is that about I was talking about ghosts one night with my mom back in 1993, fourteen years after we moved from that house. I was talking about ghosts and faces that you see out of the corner of your eye. I had just watched Sightings or something and there was a psychic on saying that when you see a very realistic face out of the corner of your eye but when you look, there’s nothing there, it’s most likely a ghost.

I kept saying, “Haven’t you ever done that? Thought you saw someone?” and she kept saying “No, never.”

After I let the subject drop, she brought it up again.

She said, “Actually, remember the brick house on Shawano? Remember when you girls were sleeping in that upstairs part? I went up there one day when you were in school to pick up dirty towels and I was standing by your closet, looking out the window when I just got this funny feeling in my stomach. Then I thought I saw a woman standing there looking at me, but when I turned my head she was gone. It was over by that little cold room in the front of the house. Remember that room?”

I had never told her about the incident and we had lived in so many different houses, so there was no reason for her to just pick that house at random. Very spooky, huh?

There’s actually an epilogue to this story: a year ago, that house went up for sale. It had been actually a beautiful house: hard wood floors throughout, original Victorian marble fireplace, mosaic Italianate tile floor in the first floor bathroom, four bedrooms total, etc’but it was in a lousy neighborhood and on a busy street. There was a sign that advertised an ‘Open House For Sale By Owner’, so I went one day. No one there. I sat out in my car waiting for a good half hour, being creeped out by the house in general and then finally called the phone number on the sign. The guy wasn’t going to make the Open House and I think the fact that someone was interested in touring the house surprised him.

Feeling let down, I wandered around the house, looking in the windows. The kitchen still bore my mother’s 1980’s experimental light blue and white painted cupboards, but the rest of the house was different. They had removed the great chandelier in the entryway. Our downstairs bedroom (which Mo and I had shared) was now garishly painted, although the closet still contained my mother’s addition of a low bar for Mo’s clothing.

Amazingly, the steps to the upstairs apartment were the same stairs. This was surprising because they had been pretty rickety when we lived there. Now they were positively life threatening. I looked up to the door and noticed it was open’. Not just unlocked, actually open.

I couldn’t resist. I carefully ascended the creaking wooden stairs and stood before the door to the apartment. The second I touched the doorknob; I heard the voices of little girls playing. Now, this is a classic cinematic trick, to give sound effects to show that the character is remembering’ sort of an audio-flashback, but it wasn’t imagined. Either I was hearing voices of neighborhood children playing close by OR it was ethereal voices of something else. I got the biggest goose pimples I’ve ever gotten in my life, especially because it was daylight, a crisp autumn Sunday afternoon and that house still scared the shit out of me. It was almost as if it were saying, ‘I remember you’ even though I’m empty, I’m still here.’

I ventured inside. The interior was in a shambles. The little kitchen of the apartment was disgusting’ the former tenants had apparently just left the garbage when they moved out. The cupboards smelled like mice. Mo’s bedroom was still the same’ same lighting fixtures, same everything. What had been my bedroom was changed’ they had ripped down the wallpaper in that room, although a few shards remained in that scary closet.

The nursery’ now the nursery was changed. They had replaced the doorknob, probably in attempt to stop the door from opening on its own, I have to imagine. They had put some insulation in the little gable window, but it was still freezing in there. I don’t remember much else about it. I think I wigged out and booked down those rickety stairs as fast as my legs could take me.

A few weeks later, the house was gone. No, not sold, GONE. The church next door had purchased the land and apparently, they had donated the house to Habitat for Humanity. I think. It was very unnerving though, seeing a big empty space where that house once stood.

Even as a kid, I’ve always been pretty skeptical. I got in trouble when I was in third grade for asking, ‘If Adam and Eve were the only people in the world, and then Cain was sent out in the world and was scorned by all the other people’. What people? I thought Adam and Eve were the only people and Cain and Abel were their sons?’

So there it is. I wouldn’t believe it if I hadn’t experienced it myself. So that’s why I believe in ghosts.

I’m thinking of tattooing the word “What?” on my forehead

Boo.

Today I’m dressed as Grumpy Ear Ache Girl, most noticeable by my rendition of her trademark cry: ‘What? What? I can’t hear out of that ear!’

Yesterday, I spent exactly 45 minutes at work. About five minutes of that was spent tenderly trying to insert my headphone, which is like a hearing aid and goes directly into your ear (and guess which ear it is shaped for) before giving up and reattaching my handset. I took one phone call and realized that not only could I not close my teeth together, it actually hurt to talk.

So I went home because it all just sucked too much for words. At home, it wasn’t much better, but I watched Memento and popped Advil out of a Pez dispenser, speaking only one sentence’. ‘What the FUCK?’ at the end of the movie.

But I have the urge to walk around, pretending not to hear the things I am hearing, and then when people act annoyed, I’ll tell them ‘You see, I have this condition’.’

I know. It’s lame, but things like that amuse the shit out of me’ especially because people in Wisconsin just don’t get it. Wisconsin is the reason that Everybody Loves Raymond is still on the air. Nascar and professional wrestling simply would not be the phenomena that they are if it weren’t for the Cheeseheads.

The fact that a group of people proudly proclaim that they have cultured dairy for heads is proof enough, non?

I did manage to be somewhat productive, however. I made the 2nd best batch of chili I’ve ever made in my life. It’s almost as good as the Best Batch of Chili I’ve ever made in my life, but not quite. The flavors might meld together overnight and it may evolve to be on par with the Best Batch of Chili, but we’ll see.

If you’d like to eat like Weetabix and Esteban, here’s a value-added recipe for some version of Weetabix’s Chili (I do a lot of editing while I’m cooking, so it’s not entirely accurate): saut’ ‘ cup chopped onion and 2 chopped cloves of garlic in a splash of olive oil until translucent, then add 4 lb very lean ground chuck and brown well (do not drain the resulting juices). When brown, add three drained cans of chili type beans (I use 1 can of ‘chili beans’, 1 can of light red kidney beans, and 1 can of black beans), 1 cup Bowl of Red (which is a local chili powder mix but I’m thinking you could use any Chili Powder mix if you don’t live near a distributer of this fabu product), 1 dried chipolte chili pepper, 12 oz tomato juice, ‘ Tablespoon of cumin, a splash of lemon juice, several turns of a peppermill (I think that would be about ‘ Tablespoon of black pepper? I have no clue). Let simmer for at least 4 hours, then you might want to add more Bowl of Red or lemon juice to taste. Honestly, though, I’m guessing on these measurements because I don’t measure a thing.

Esteban just informed me via email that we will not be visiting N’Awlins this January. No beignets for me. No Cajun cooking. No psychos dressed up like vampires. Nothing but slush and dirty snow and sub-zero temperatures.

So now I am Pouting Girl With Earache.

‘What? I have this condition’.’

Bah. This diary entry sucked. Maybe if I get enough time, I’ll tell you the entirely true story of the time I saw a ghost.

Thank God I can’t get pregnant from that orifice… that would be a hell of a birth!

So, I’m thinking of pitching this movie to Hollywood producers. Here’s the gimmick: a girl who only goes out with men who drive foreign sports cars gets flummoxed somehow by Rue McClanahan’s breasts so that when she looks at men with pieces of shit cars, she’ll think they’re Porches and Jaguars and the like. She hooks up with a tool that drives a ’79 Chevy Chevette, which she thinks is a BMW. Wacky hijinks ensue.

I’m serious. I just realized this today. A Jaguar adds points to a man’s sex appeal.

So I’m shallow. You can call me fat too.

I have an ear infection.

My niece Abby had tubes put in her ears for having fewer ear infections than I’ve had.

I think this boils down to a sin from my past. It’s all ying and yang, I think, in an organic kind of way. If I were a medieval doctor, I might think that someone whispered gossip and it festered there, causing pain because I deigned to listen rather than turning my head.

But I tend to thing things are a bit more scientific than that.

Once upon a time, I somehow got sperm in my ear. I’m not going to go into the logistics. It happened easily enough. And keep your snickers to yourself, dearie, as I know damn well that you’ve had sperm in some pretty unusual places yourself. Don’t ask me how I know. I just do. Let’s just leave it at the fact that somehow, doing something I got sperm on my ear, very possibly in my ear a long time ago.

And I’ve had ear infections ever since.

See, kids, sex before you are married is BAD! It fucks up your hearing, for one thing! If prophylactics had been involved, I would not be currently deaf in one ear, downing four Advils chased by Blavod.

Ok, not really, my hearing is only partially fucked up in that ear. I feel like Jimmy Stewart in It’s a Wonderful Life, only instead of saving my brother from drowning under a frozen pond, I ended up with spoodle in my ear and it is now ruminating about, doing crazy spermatazoan dances, having crazy one-eyed tail flagellating parties and all running amuck. I’d stick a q-tip in there, but I’m afraid they’d try to fertilize it.

Now, I’m certain that you’re probably thinking, ‘Now Weetabix, it is simply not possible for sperm to live in your ear for, say, eleven or more years.’ But you don’t have a bunch of crazy ear achy single cell organisms flagellating around, dressing up for Halloween like paramecium, now do you? And in the next few years, when science discovers that yes, it is scientifically possible for sperm to stay alive for 25,586 days when kept at 98.6 degrees in the hospitable climate of a karaoke diva’s ear, then, well, you’ll just have to admit that Weetabix knew it all along.

Don’t listen to me. It’s the Augmentin talking now. Go read the entry from two hours ago, back when I was still making sense.

I’m going to go nonoxonol-9 my head now.
