Week of deadlines

Well, this month has been oodles of indoor activity. Esteban came back from Europe and now he’s off to New York. I wouldn’t mind going along on that one, but too much vacation time has been taken by myself recently. Plus, I’m in a weird position because I actually enjoy my job, or at least I don’t mind being at work.

One of my customers is sending me some golf tees. Wheee! I’m totally excited about the golfing season coming up. My clubs are in the garage, ready to go. Every time I drive in, I see them there, all cute and purple and sassy. This year, I will buy more golf accessories, including but not limited to golf shoes and a golf towel. I would also like one of those ball retriever things. However, my ball-loss rate has diminished greatly recently. Plus, when I’m about to hit over water, I switch to a cheap ball, so I don’t mind as much if I lose them.

Been working on copywriting a lot this month. I finished the first of many weekly columns for Pappano’s Fantasy Football website, although that won’t really gear up until July. I’m currently also working on an article for Grogan’s Sports Analyst on Women in Fantasy Football. Should get that finished this week and off to Dan Grogan. How exciting. Who knew that I’d be using that degree of mine to write SPORTS JOURNALISM!?!?!?!

I have a new desk fish, since fish #1 didn’t make it past the first week. I wasn’t going to get another fish, because it was so traumatic disposing of the body the first time. Someone at work bought me a new fish and I accepted it as long as someone else will remove the corpse, as I can’t go through that again. The new fish is really weird. He likes to play dead. He’s playing with my mind. He sticks his little head way down in the marbles and does the dead fish float. He’s trying to psyche me out, I think. Or he’s a lazy fish.

This week is the week of deadlines. Many bills to be paid, taxes to be filed, articles due, special project at work due. Hate that and alternately love that.

I worked a lot on the GB East High School Class of 1989 website this weekend. Completely revamped it and changed servers. I’m not pleased so far with the results, but it is such an improvement over the infospace.com site that I can hardly complain. Hopefully, this will be a work in progress which will improve with time.

All in all, not much going on!

Weird dreams and cat water fountains

My spring exuberance has dampened, but not entirely gone away. I now only think about other things I want to do, but don’t have the energy to do them.

I think I want one of those visor things that have “sunlight” shining down into your eyes. I saw it once on an episode of Northern Exposure. God, I miss that show. Chris-In-The-Morning was/is the sexiest fictional character alive.

Currently, a smog of semi-frozen humidity is covering the city. This is simply the forewarning to the first real warm day of the season, which is always significant because the slug and pollution which has been deposited and frozen on the ground then becomes airborne and suddenly, everything smells like cow shit and farts. I suppose that it is possible that those farts let surreptitiously under warm down comforters on cold December nights are now free-floating around the town also. What should be a nice wonderful spring day guarantees a lungful of stale concentrated pollution. I’ll take my pollution fresh and non-concentrated, thank you!

Dream last night that my cat Tilly somehow ate an alligator. So then she was walking around like an alligator, with her legs out the side of her body rather than normal. Then she started to walk down the street, I suppose in search of the swamplands or whatever it is that alligators search for. I started to follow her, but went back to get my car. Then I found that all of Esteban’s friends were over at our house and they had parked me in (probably a reference to the other day, when I tried to leave, but Joel had parked me in). Then I started to get upset because I didn’t see where Tilly went and Chicken Boobs was there and started talking about the bad things that could happen to her, in Chicken Boobs’ off-hand, blunt way. I told C.B. that it was a cold thing to say to me, especially when I was upset, and then C.B. called me a Bitch and I said “How dare you call me a Bitch! Get out of my house!” and she started to throw my dishes around, at me, etc. And I said “I know that these aren’t the Elvis Collector plates that you are used to at home, but I would like to keep my plates, thank you!”, which I think was a pretty good rip for a dream.

Then somehow, I was sleeping in the warehouse of Fort James. There were mountains of packages of toilet paper. It was some sort of festival and someone gave me a balloon for part of an act later, I had to keep it because it was integral to the rest of the show. So I’m walking with it and it floated too close to the lights and it popped. It was a pink balloon. I tried to look for other balloons, but there weren’t really any pink ones in that shape, so I ended up with a dark green one instead, and of course it really didn’t make much sense. Then at some point, there was a SWAT team. I know. Weird.

Plus, my favorite guy got voted off the island last night. Jeff! Wherever you are, you’re my favorite all time!

We purchased a cat water fountain for the cats. It was sort of expensive, but it’s so gadgety that I love it. Just a never ending stream of water into the cat’s water bowl. I don’t know if the cats like it, but maybe Chelsea will stop begging for drinks of water out of the sink in the bathroom. Here’s hoping!

Winter Renewal

I often say that I hate winter, and I really shouldn’t say that. I hate the darkness, I hate the frigid cold. I hate waking up in the morning and the room is completely dark and it’s so cold I don’t want to leave the inviting down comforter nor the steamy shower. I hate all that. I hate slush. Slush, I believe, is one of the highest causes of murders in Wisconsin. I haven’t gotten scientific proof on this, but I’m certain this is true. Also, Slush’s partner in crime Road Salt also is not my favorite. God, you should see what it’s doing to my floormats in my car. I don’t even want to think about the rust factor.

But post-solstice winter (note the qualifier there!) has it’s nice points too. Much in the way that this is a renewal time for the earth, it becomes a renewal time for myself as well. At this point (late February), I’ve gone through the hibernation stages (I won’t even begin to talk about my Sims addiction) and have lapsed into the creative phase which always follows my dormant slug stage. Right now, I’m bursting with different things I want to engage in. There’s scrapbooking, which is this complete feminine thing with the added bonus of accessories. She who has the most accessories, wins. Then there’s genealogy, which is my winter quest. It’s so addictive. However, all of the really good genealogy stuff (tramping through cemeteries, going to various little court houses, etc) is best done in Spring or Summer.

I’m also obsessing on my garden. Or my garden-to-be. I saw “What Lies Beneath” the other night and Michelle Pfeiffer’s character had, despite deplorable taste in men, an exquisite garden. Lots of roses. Very organic. I dig the rounded field stone look. I love perennials. But when it comes to actually digging out beds and (ugh) weeding, I come to road blocks. I’d rather plan and take credit for it than do the actual work. But maybe this year will be different. We need to plot out the area next to the front porch (where Esteban allowed a weed garden to flourish after doing Dirt Dump ’98). I want something other than pointy bushes, because I want to go with the feel of our 50 year old house. Pointy bushes don’t belong. They feel harsh and uninviting. Yechh. I’m thinking trellis’ and rose bushes or maybe heliotrope. Don’t know what that is, but they talk about it in “Our Town”, so it’s gotta be good.

Also, then there’s the web page. And photography. I’d like to do some experimentation with portrait photography. In black and white, if possible. I was at the Disney Store yesterday and they had a big stack of Disney stuffed animals and my only thought was that it would be the perfect place to take a portrait shot. I’m really attracted to purchasing a digital camera for this purpose, but haven’t really committed. I find it hard to commit to that when I really want a telescopic lens for my real camera.

And then there’s the writing. I’m getting lots of great copy-writing action from Kassandra in New Mexico. Plus, winning the recent fiction competition was a big gust to my writer’s ego. I think I need to be surrounded by creative types again. My writing was doing leaps and bounds when I knew that I had someone to show it to. Online boards just don’t cut it for me. Esteban tries but he really doesn’t have the literary chops for my stuff. His is more of a pragmatic approach to reading. While story is important, sometimes a white chicken is just a white chicken (my apologies to e.e. cumming).

I’m just brimming with energy today. I’m certain that the weather nearing 25 degrees and the sun this morning have helped my mood.

Oh no! I just heard someone say “It’s really snowing out there!” ARRRRRRGGGHHH!

Fear and Loathing in Big Lake, Minnesota

This is truly going to break your heart. Really, it is. This is some serious shit.

So I come back from Key West (no, not the break your heart bit) and I’m a tad upset, because I realize that as I was sucking down Conch Coolers on Sunset Pier, turning my nose up at Conch Fritters (still makes me want to go gack at the thought), it was the death anniversary of my wonderful dear great grandmother. Not only that, but she died on Saturday, January 13, 1996 and while I was sitting on the Sunset Pier, having a grand old time, it was Saturday, January 13, 2001. I’m not sure why this makes such a big deal, but for whatever reason, it does. And did thoughts or rememberance of my dear sweet grandmother come through my mind? Nope. This is why the extreme guilt.

Now, fast forward to back in Green Bay. My mom comes over and tells me that my Wimmer grandfather has passed away. Last week. And it was in the paper. But nary a Wimmer (and specifically not the Wimmer that you would like, ie. my father) called me to tell me. No, my grandmother has to see it in the paper and call my Mom, who thought I was still in Key West. So I look up the obituary online and it was in the Tuesday, Jan 16 issue. No, I didn’t do the math yet. I’m still stuck on the phrase “the funeral was attended to by immediate family and friends” because apparently direct blood relation is not only not “immediate” enough to attend the funeral, but also not “immediate” enough to even fucking call and inform. And then I get stuck at “six grandchildren”. Let’s see, Sharon has two kids, Gary’s kid Jason, that’s three, David has two kids, that makes five, and then I’m certain that they counted my evil step sister (ok, she’s not evil, she’s just massively addicted to cocaine and god knows what else), judging by the phrase “He spent his declining years helping his granddaughter fix her car”. Folks, he wasn’t fixing my car. That means I wasn’t even fucking COUNTED in the whole grandchild equation.

So I call my Aunt Sharon (who I’ve tried to find off and on for several years, but my father wouldn’t tell me her name, city, etc) and she fills me in on stuff. Apparently, she had asked my evil step monster if she (Sharon) could have a bullet from the military funeral as a rememberance and step monster says “No, I’m saving those for Mark” (my dad). So then Sharon asks “Can I have his glasses then to remember him by?” and StepMonster says “No, we’re giving them to the Lion’s Club”. And Sharon says “Well, have you got anything of his I can have to remember my father by?” and Step Monster says (I kid you not!) “Well, we have some of his old SHIT DIAPERS around, I suppose we could let you have one of them!” And she was serious. I told you she is evil.

Anyway, apparently, Sharon had tried to get ahold of me, but my dad didn’t whatsoever. Sharon also said that my stepsister (step monster’s “daughter”) always asked for help with her car because my grandfather would then give her money to get it fixed and she’d then snort the money he gave her.

So, a few things came from this. First, the chill coming from Big Lake Minnesota is almost palpable. Second, some interesting words came out of my mouth to Sharon and they were this “I tried for years and years to get in touch with him and I was always spurned away. Then he sent that letter and I didn’t respond. I decided that I had enough people who like me for who I am, who love me, so I don’t need to go looking for love from him.”. Which is like, wow, incredible. It felt really good to say it. And yes, I actually used the word “spurned” in conversation.

So what have I done? Well, a little vindictive thing. I published my wedding announcement in their local paper. Yes, I know it’s been a year and a half, but I figured since we are now using the local rags to communicate, so be it. Also, I plan on calling my grandmother Wimmer (had been divorced from grandfather Wimmer). I have not talked to my grandmother since I was 9 years old, people. Not that I haven’t tried. The best I could get out of my father (back when I actually talked to him) was that she had married a Jew, so her name changed. I also got to talk to Sharon, which was fabulous. I hope everything I told her gets back to him. Yes, I’m not truly healthy about this, but I think I’m doing fairly well.

Now, the true bummer that just bit me in the ass about this today. I realized that he died on Saturday, January 13, 2001. While I was sitting on the goddamn Sunset Pier in Key West, getting blitzed on rum. And my great grandfather died on July 13, 1985. (and both myself and my husband were born on the 13th too) I’m trying not to look for the Karma in this.

Old Year’s Revolutions

In the year 2000 I accomplished many things:

I admitted that my name is Weetabix and, yes, I am a catalog addict. I choose the paint colors for two widely used rooms in my house and then saw through the painting of them. I found a hairdresser who I LOVE and who convinced me to loose the remaining perm and cut my hair short. I fell slack on scrapbooking over the summer.

I realized how carefully quiet it can be to be unhappy, how it creeps in and everyone around knows how unhappy you are and even when you are in tears, you don’t realize how much it has invaded your life. I cried three times in one week over my job. I changed jobs. I love my job.

I went to see Sting in concert. I stayed at a love nest for 50 year olds. I got a huge ear infection. I was told that it might be the mumps. It wasn’t.

I saw my extended family ripped apart by pettiness. I found out about rumors that were spread about something I said. I fixed the hurt feelings caused, even though I was the one who should have been told “sorry”. I saw a family member intent on causing these problems again and again. I realized that it’s not worth it and I wouldn’t put up with problems like this from friends and that family shouldn’t treat each other that way. I fixed it anyway.

I went to business school. I was bored. I went to the renaissaince fair. I was happy!

I helped my husband change his job. We increased our incomes slightly, which was very nice because I finally feel as though I can relax and that we can finally afford our house and the things I want to do to it.

I put up and maintained my personal web page. I got the hots for Russell Crowe. I still have them.

I said goodbye, by default, to one of my best friends, who moved across the country and never even told me.

I became addicted to genealogy. I started my husband’s genealogy when I ran out of outlets on my own. I went around Northeastern Wisconsin and took digital pictures of tombstones. I met a Lemerond cousin while in the graveyard.

I made an impact on housework and would say that for the majority of 2000, the house was at least 50% clean. I rarely need to go into the basement in the morning to get clean clothes.

I became a Sims addict. I became a message board addict. I earned “curmudgeon” on Hissy Fit.

I bought Xmas presents online. I bought my husband’s birthday present online. I made Xmas tree ornaments out of beads and twisted wire from an idea I heard of online.

I met a Survivor. I found my college roommate, which makes me very happy!

I became addicted to sushi and wasabi. I started drinking french vanilla cappucino mixed with hot chocolate. I gave in to my caffeine addiction.

I started thinking of myself as a tech person rather than a creative person. I won a writing competition and got money for it.

I got into a big fight in a bar. I became a karaoke diva.

I gained some weight. I stopped gaining weight. I lost some weight. It didn’t bother me as much. I don’t eat when I’m not hungry anymore. I don’t know when this started, but I noticed it this year.

I owned up to the fact that I often buy into concepts rather than ideas. I love to shop for garden stuff, but hate to garden. I like shopping for sewing projects, but I never sew. Now I shop, but don’t buy.

I began to feed the birds.

I golfed a lot and bought a cute golf visor and pink putter. I bought a white golfing shirt. I got stung on the hand by a fucking hornet in mid swing on tee 4. It hurt like hell. My hand swelled up for a week. That was the most pain I felt all year. I am thankful, because of all of the things I could have done, this was not that bad.

I love my husband more each year.

I rediscovered the library. I lost a library book.

The big thing I learned in 2000 was I realized that I like to do things that aren’t work-related or house-related. I like to scrapbook, play computer games, take pictures, read, paint pictures, and make things. It makes me happy. I need to make more room for these things in 2001 and future.

Baby carrots

Right now I’m eating little carrots with dill dip from the vending machine at work.

Sadly, I would call them “baby carrots”, which is what I always thought that they were, but they aren’t.

Baby carrots are merely big old carrots, cut down with the ends carved into rounded pleasing shapes.

Faux baby carrots.

Which cost more than regular old, long, hairy carrots.

Baby carrots, that are not baby carrots, somehow taste better than straight cut blunt finger carrots.

When I was a kid, baby carrots were still baby carrots and we got blunt cut carrots for dinner, blunt cut carrot sticks in our lunches, plucked from damp sandwich baggies. Carrot coins as snacks with yellow middle CBS eyes looking out at you. And no dill dip either.

Then someone started carving big carrots into baby carrot shapes and selling them. The poor people bought em up because they thought they were somehow nouveau and classy. The rich people bought em because they just don’t know any better.

Now the real baby carrots just look overpriced and no one buys them anymore. Compared to the fake baby carrots, they just look like a mistake because they seem to be the exact same thing, just more expensive.

And the poor people laugh because for just $1.45 more a bag, they can get cute baby carrots rather than big old hairy carrots for 49 cents.

And poorer people still are loading big hairy carrots into carrot carvers, that whittle and peel and exfoliate the orange rods into cute little pellets.

And true baby carrots are left in the ground, due to poor sales, to become long and tough and then get whittled down to baby size again.

Disrobing and pains of the heart

Today was a bust. Here’s the scoop: I rushed to volleyball (where we kicked butt in 2 of 3 games, narrowly missing a shut out by a point in the second game) and during play, I started to feel a tight pain in my chest. Before you get worried, it is nothing, but it freaked me out and I of course started worrying when it didn’t go away. I should really know better. Two years ago, I thought I had a major ulcer and it turned out that I had bruised a rib while playing.

Well, so I figured that I’d just mosey on over to the First Care place and see how my heart was acting. I was pretty perturbed as I walked into the ER and went to the triage and the nurse asks for my first name and then says have a seat. Didn’t ask what my problem was or how I was feeling, nothing. I should have dropped over in a faint right there, just to show them! You see, she was busy getting the weight and temperature of a frisky child. I figure, ok, I’ll be nice, but I’m freaking about my heart which at this point is now racing from stress. Then she calls a guy up to be weighed and temperatured and so on. Now I’m ticked. Then the guy leaves and nothing. I go up to the window and I say “Excuse me, is this the ER?” and she says “Yes” and I said “Well, I’m a little concerned because no one even asked me what was wrong.” and she says “That’s because I was with a patient. There was a line. Now it is your turn.” and she asks me all of these benign questions before even asking what my issue is. I say “I’m having a pain in my chest” and she says “do you feel like your going to throw up?” and I say “no” and she says “Well, then it’s probably not your heart”. Hello????? I think she just said that so she wouldn’t look so bad, since she didn’t ask what was wrong with me. Is SHE a cardiologist? Is she qualified to make these determinations upon a two second inspection?

So they take me into a room and tell me to strip, but I don’t all the way because the robe is short and there is a window into the room, looking into the busy hall and the minute I lie down on the gurney, they are going to see my ratty underwear. (Remember what your mother always told you? It’s true. The one day I don’t wear sparkly bright white underwear because I’m having my period is the one day I have to go the emergency room)

This Boy Scout comes in and I learn that he is my doctor. I tell him that I was playing volleyball when it started and he says “At school?” and I say “um, no” and he goes “Where?” and I say, “um, at a bar?” and he says “How old are you” and I say “29” and he nods. Bless his little heart. Must be the new short hairdo or the sweaty/no makeup thing?

So they do an EKG, which was yucky because they put stickers all over you, including under your boob, and then make you lie really still and yell at you if you move (not that I know this from experience). The nice thing about this was that I had my own private TV, so I got to watch some horrible Mark Harmon thing, which was much nicer than sitting there counting the screams of the bratty kid in the next room.

Then this very cute male nurse comes in, wearing scrubs and looking like a runaway from Dawson’s Creek (which I don’t watch, but I often see commercials for it during Buffy the Vampire Slayer, so I know what they look like), and he tells me that I am scheduled to wear a heart monitor that I have to pick up tomorrow. Which sucks. I don’t want to. Oh, and I have to quit caffeine. Which I don’t think is possible.

By the way, it never mattered that I put my pants back on. No one cared. I think those nurses’ just want to exert power on people by telling them to get naked. I think it makes it harder for a disgruntled patient to get up and leave on them. So next time they tell you that you have to be completely naked when you are going in because your throat hurts, just don’t.

Anyway, all I apparently did was pull the muscle that connects your chest muscle things (the muscle over your breastbone). Connective tissue, I guess. I know exactly when it must have happened too, because there was one serve where I was reaching and running backwards. Would have been a Reebok moment if not for the rampant chest pains.

So now all is well. I’ve decided to not wear the heart monitor thing. We’ll see about the caffeine abstinence. Yeah, I doubt it too.

dreams of snakes

Last night I dreamt something about leafs. I was trying to find the perfect fall leaf… not dirty, not veiny, not all chewed on by whatever. I kept finding leaves that were all eviscerated… you know that natural lacy thing that happens to leaves. I found one, an oak leaf, all perfect and amber. Then set about finding other species of leaves. Not sure why.

Two nights ago, I dreamt that the lawn had gotten thick and tall… up to my chest. It was thick like you had to sort of swim to walk through it…. swimming is the perfect analogy. Because it was so long, various animals had taken up resident in it, including two very vicious snakes. They were really just big garter snakes, but they can bite too. When we lived on Lawe street, there was a little snake out in our yard, a little foot of twisty rope with a little whisper tongue. It hissed at me when I tried to pick it up and I stopped dead in my tracks. This was the first time I ever realized that if you were convincing enough, you could intimidate even someone 100 times your size.

Monday night, I saw the northern lights as I came home from school. Every time I’ve seen the northern lights, it has boded well. Hopefully it bodes well for me now!

Chick Flicks

Chick flicks–The Scourge of the Entertainment Industry!!!

Having said that, I must admit that I enjoyed “Message in a Bottle” very much. I think, however, that the Robin Wright character was a big asshole and she deserved to have her heart broken, and maybe even her neck so that she would stop the weird head-bobbing thing that apparently she thought looked enticing.

But all in all, chick flicks are the most sappy and shallow forms of entertainment around, including Soap Operas. Take “My Best Friend’s Wedding”. What was the point of that whole movie? We were supposed to be rooting for Julia Roberts, right? Even though she was the very epitome of what we as women should be ashamed of? Lying? Of course! Backstabbing? Sure! And how about the subtle manipulation of her supposed best friend? Why not! Poor Kimmy (Cameron Diaz) to have such a barracuda for her husband’s best friend. I would not doubt that in the future, she would try to lure Stupid Dumb Guy into her bed once again. Why did Rupert have to be gay? (This has nothing to do with the movie, of course, but just a general lament. Rupert Everett is quite possibly the world’s most perfect man.)
