Today was the day.

Chelsea has been acting aloof and sleepy for the last week. Aside from her concentration camp thinness, she’s normally a very social animal. Her meows have gotten quieter and quieter. I noticed that I hadn’t seen her near the dry food dish in at least a week, so I started feeding her canned food almost exclusively. Tilly enjoyed this a great deal, because she scores the leftovers. I think Tilly has gained three pounds in the last week. She’s ready to be a kitty sumo wrestler. However, on Friday night, I gave Chelsea some food and she hardly touched it, then laid down near the bowl and painted, as though standing there had been entirely too much effort. Then she went back to lie on top of my graduation robe behind the bedroom door.

Over the weekend, Esteban admitted to me that he felt she wasn’t going to last through the end of the year. I thought to myself that I didn’t think she was going to last until the end of the summer, but I didn’t say anything. Then he noticed that she seemed to have labored breathing and asked me if I could take her to the vet today. Even then, I knew that that she would not be coming home with me.

I hate to be the strong one. I hate it so very much.

This morning, I got up and got ready for work. I had planned to go into work and call the vet and then come home and get her later, but when I checked on her, she seemed worse. Then I noticed that she had a nosebleed. I cleaned her face off and she meowed a weak little bit. Then I got into the car and drove to work. By the time I was a few blocks from work, I realized that I was a colossal jerk and if the cat was suffering or could be helped, I shouldn’t wait for an appointment, I should just take care her and not worry about the things I had to do at work.

I called in a vacation day and then drove back home. I immediately got the carrier ready for her. Then I went in and woke Esteban up. He was upset. I didn’t say what I was thinking, but he knew already. I then asked him if he wanted to put her in the carrier and we both started to cry, knowing that I was really telling him to say ‘goodbye’ to the cat he’s had since he was 11. She made a few pathetic meows and then he grabbed one of his worn t-shirts to put in the carrier with her, so that she could smell him. He couldn’t come with me. He knew already how hard it would be and he just couldn’t. I practically ran out the door with her and sped off to the vet’s office. His last words to us were ‘See if they can make her better.’

When I was about two miles away, I called the vet and explained that I was bringing in my cat because I thought she was dying, except that I completely choked up upon saying that. Then she wanted me to describe what was happening to her and I could barely do it without sobbing. I managed to compose myself by the time I got to the vet and they whisked her away to the examination room after weighing her, cage and all. The total weight for her, plus the t-shirt and carrier, was 9 pounds. The cat used to weigh 13 pounds.

The doctor examined her and then brought me into a room. It was the dental room for canines. They must have just stuck me wherever they had an available room. The very nice young vet came in and said that she felt Chelsea’s kidneys and liver were failing and she was declining. She wouldn’t say that she was dying, so I finally said ‘She’s declining, right? She’s not going to last through the week?’ but then I burst into tears upon hearing the words come out in a room so brightly lit, looking at these two adorable girls, both in their twenties, both having to start their Monday morning watching someone lose it over their dying pet. I kept apologizing, which is ludicrous, but it’s just how repressed I am. My face is all messed up because I had another allergic reaction to my facial sunscreen and it’s all red and swollen already.

There had been a slight chance that we could have prolonged her life by leaving her in the hospital for several days, hooked up to many intravenous tubes, but honestly, it would have been very traumatic for her already and the cat is nineteen years old.

Was. Was nineteen years old.

I told them to prepare to euthanize her and that I would take the body, thinking that when we had Pookie put to sleep, for months afterwards, I regretted the fact that I didn’t know what happened to his remains and that I’ll never know. They took my credit card to pay for everything. But then, I had a moment of indecision. I didn’t want Esteban to feel as though we hadn’t made every effort. I didn’t want him to feel as though I had made a bad decision. I asked the assistant to stay with Chelsea while I ran out to the car to call him. I called home’ he wasn’t there. I called his cell’ he didn’t answer. I finally found him in his office, which surprised me. Unfortunately, at the sound of my voice, he immediately got upset.

I tried to explain what the doctor had said, but I only managed ‘It’s not good.’

‘I knew that.’

‘I’m going to have her&AO8AvwC9AO8AvwC9-

‘Yeah.’

‘Do you want me to bring her’.remains’ home afterwards?’

‘No. Leave her there. There’s nothing we can do with her.’

I didn’t argue.

By that time, however, I was completely sobbing in the veterinary clinic’s parking lot. I hung up the phone, leaving him utterly devastated, and went back into the room. They had to redo the bill because I had changed the plan. I talked to her, and stroked her fur. She sneezed and sent a shower of blood all over my car keys and the counter, which started my tears again. I cleaned her up and petted her until she started purring. They gave me the option of being with her while they did it, and God help me, I couldn’t do it. I just could not watch that. I don’t know if I can forgive myself for that. I am such a tremendous coward. I tremble when they take my cats’ temperatures, I can’t imagine what it would do to me to watch as she succumbed to their shot. I waited outside until it was finished. They’re going to send us a paw print I guess. I don’t know if I will be able to handle that or not.

I drove home in shock, my face red and hot, stinging where the salt water touched my hives. Everything on the radio was a dagger, even the horrible ghetto rap stuff. When ‘I Will Remember You’ came on, I gave up and drove in silence. When I got home, Tilly ran up to me, tail up, trilling. She is always so happy to see me. She sniffed at the empty carrier and then meowed. Tilly never meows. Then I started all over again.

Rest now, sweet kitty. We’ll miss you forever.

And here’s the sober version….

So this weekend.

I think it’s been a lost weekend of slackerdom. It started out productive enough. I stopped and picked up a few DVD’s and then came home. The television in our living room has been having issues for the last few months where it will intermittently go to static for the video feed. Basically, you can hear what’s going on but you can’t see it. It’s very frustrating’ almost like watching scrambled porn. You start thinking that maybe you’re missing something really really exceptional only I’m just trying to watch Martha Stewart cut butter into flour or something. Thus, I came home from work and watched about fifteen minutes of television, ten minutes of which were static, and declared, ‘Let’s go buy a tv.’ Esteban, as with most things electronic, was game. Anything with a cord is money well spent for Esteban. Had I wanted a lovely Queen Anne cherry coffee table or something, things would have been different, but a tv’ now that’s an investment. Gah. Anyway, our tragic flaw in our plan was that we did not measure the opening of our entertainment center. You can see where this is going. We went to dinner, ending up at the Olive Garden, which was only because we were completely desperate for sustenance by that time. I had grilled swordfish and steamed veggies. Esteban had heartattack-on-a-plate Chicken Alfredo. Then off to the electronics superstore. After much deliberation, I decided upon a lovely 32-inch television, which we then brought home. The face was 29.5 inches. We took it home and before Esteban carted it into the house, I measured the opening of the cabinet. 28 inches. It’s enough to make one cry. By that time, it was 8:30 and the store was about to close. ‘Ok, I can either take this one back and get a 27-inch or I can go buy a stand or something for the tv. Your call.’ Esteban says, thinking in his head that he had to leave the house five minutes ago if he was going to get to the store before it closed. After a few minutes of deliberation (read: I decided that I didn’t want some fugly fake furniture stand thing to replace our fugly questionably-wood entertainment center.), he went out the door to get a 27-inch television. He tried to tell me that size doesn’t matter. Yes it fucking does. Those extra five inches would have maybe offered extra entertainment value that I will now never know. I will always be wondering if the other tv would have left me more fulfilled. Like, maybe I could see Buffy’s nose pores or something. I dunno.

So, that was dealt with. Esteban returned with a smaller, cheaper, and undoubtedly less capable television and then spent an hour being a guy and hooking it up. Finally, with much anticipation, we got to watch Orange County. Phew. Yeah. That was worth it. Actually, I almost burst a blood vessel laughing at one of the deleted scenes (the Annihilator one’ that totaled me. It was classic.) but all-in-all, it was sort of lame and had eerie moments where the main character kept morphing into Tom Hanks. Yes. I know it’s his son. That’s what I’m saying. It kept freaking Esteban out. We’d be sitting there watching it and suddenly he’d say ‘Whooa&AO8AvwC9AO8AvwC9- right there. Jeez.’ Which got to be distracting. Maybe if the television had been larger, it wouldn’t have been so distracting. I’m just saying.

We woke up uber late on Saturday and went out to a truck stop for breakfast. Again with the restaurant angst that caused us to panic and make a bad choice. Then we tooled over to Club Parents for some pool time. Esteban invited Eric over, who swims like a fish and makes us all feel graceless and unathletic. He can swim underwater like’ well, like sperm or something. Not that I’ve seen sperm in action underwater but he was really fast.

(Eric, I’m sorry about the sperm metaphor but I’m a writer and sometimes these things come to me and I just have to write them down that way. I’m not saying that you are spermy or anything. I hope you understand. And still come to dig a hole and plant my tree for me. I have your beer all ready. And if it makes you feel any better, I have a videocap of Scotty Boom Boom’s ass that I’m about two seconds from posting a link to on this page so that tens of people will see it. And really, when you put it in that context, being compared to motile sperm isn’t so bad, now is it? Just forget about the sperm thing and let’s work from there, shall we?)

Anyway, we hung out in the pool until I had to pike to go and shower and get ready to go to the Journey concert. Carissa picked me up and then we swung by the bar to pick up Golf Chica Mary and her friend Renee. Renee is one of those incredibly beautiful, thin, blonde women who can get men to follow her around like little lambs. And she’s nice. I went to high school with her little sister. Mary and Renee wanted to leave their cars at the bar so that they would have a way to get home afterwards. We swung by and picked up Pretty Penny and then off we went to the Outagamie County Fair.

We parked in a hay field and then tooled into the fair. I had announced to everyone that I was going to have me a corndog, Operation Hottie be damned. Mary suggested that I’ve been so healthy lately that I deserved a ‘cheat day’. I didn’t really view it as ‘cheating&AO8AvwC9AO8AvwC9- I was just going to have a corn dog, that’s all. Being a fan of instant gratification, I immediately went to the very first corn dog booth I saw and got a dog. And inhaled it. It was a subpar dog and I was regretting it immediately, but by that time I was starving, having not eaten since breakfast. We continued to walk around the midway.

Wisconsin’s finest, the cream of the crop, the smartest, most beautiful people in the county’. Well, they must have all avoided this fair like the plague. I was stunned by the display of humanity out there. Orthodontia. The fair was only about 20 miles from Green Bay city limits and yet no one had apparently heard of orthodontia. And bras. The women were apparently very disillusioned by their apparent need for a bra. I saw more nipples poking out from beneath those tank tops with the shelf bras than I ever would have thought possible. I think if you’re over a B cup or over 40 with four kids, you probably need more than a shelf. Maybe you need a bookcase. I’m not certain but use some discretion. I saw one lady, obviously within spitting distance of her 50th birthday, wearing a blue tank with aforementioned shelf bra, only her breasts were sagging so far that you could see at least five inches of flat boob vertical. Her nipples were sitting around her waist. I mean, don’t get me wrong’ I own two of those tanks with the shelf bras in them too, but I SLEEP in them. No one sees me in the damned thing but for Esteban and the cats and for good reason. I give some hella cleavage, but honestly, that’s pretty personal, and not for your neighbors, carnies and the guys at the Kettle Korn stand to witness. Sadly, another woman had a black macram’ tank top on’ not a terrible fashion crime, merely a misdemeanor’ but she then wore a white Playtex bra beneath it. Blindingly white. Use some sense, lady! Penny thought that maybe I should have tapped her on the shoulder and mentioned it, but she looked strikingly like she might have been from my father’s side of the family and I don’t know if I could handle some kind of White Trash family reunion at the Outagamie County Fair. The guys were not without errors either. One man was walking around without a shirt on, complete with his fourth trimester beer gut sticking out. And his 32-inch waist pants down around his hips, leaving a good 2-inches of ass crack sticking out. I don’t understand that. I mean, if your gut creates a porch a good five inches away from your body, it’s probably time to buy bigger pants. Don’t just keep sliding them lower so that you can delude yourself that you still wear the same Levis you did in high school. Freaks.

Mary stopped at a fried cheese curd stand (Yes. Fried cheese. It’s a local thing. Don’t sneer until you’ve tried it. And yes, we understand the correlation between that and the fact that Wisconsin is the fattest state in the union, but thanks for pointing it out.) and waited in line. Carissa noticed that the corn dogs at this stand were cheaper and looked far better than the last stand. I was still pretty hungry, so I got a second one. I should have eaten something before I went to this thing. It’s my own damned fault.

I wolfed that down and it was very tasty. Ok. So that was basically supper now. I had been intending to get something more reasonable, but two corn dogs were good. Now, unfortunately, I wanted something sweet, so I got a freshly squeezed lemonade. And then I spotted a cream puff stand. That’s another Wisconsin thing, and one that I wouldn’t miss for the world. Fresh cream puffs, with real Wisconsin whipped cream’ when you die and go to heaven, it won’t get any better than that. Penny offered to split it with me, but I couldn’t really think of a way to cut a cream puff in half without ruining it, so I declined and got a whole one which they filled at least three inches thick with whipped cream. Then Penny split one with Carissa and demonstrated that you can twist them apart like an Oreo. Then I felt stupid. Stupid with a whole cream puff. I chomped that, covering my cleavage with powdered sugar until I looked a bit like a curvy round exotic dancer at a Charlie Sheen cocaine party. I even got it on my arm. It takes a special talent to get it on your outer arm. Oh but it was good! I wiped my mouth and then we tromped into the barns, looking for the horse barn. We never did find it. I did get to pet some sheep, which I think are adorable, except for the rampant pooing.

Then I started to not feel so good. We wandered back to the grandstand and got in line with Mary and Renee. Penny and Carissa wandered off to win a pink elephant, who apparently had mange because it kept shedding glitter over everything. I started to sweat profusely. After months of fruit and Luna bars, all of that saturated fat was having a little party in my unprepared digestive system. Gah. Never again. People kept walking by with fried foods too’ taunting me. I had to shield my eyes at one point. There seemed to be a parade of funnel cakes, too, which make me a little ill anyway. I have been haunted by the Ghost of Funnel Cakes Past since a rather spectacular outdoor festival the week of my 21st birthday, when I discovered German beers.

The concert was general admission and we claimed some prime seats in the grandstand. Penny was still hungry, so she went and got a pretzel while I tried consciously to avoid the veritable parade of cholesterol that was cruising before me. French fries, batter fried cheese curds, homemade potato chips, tempura, corn dogs’. It was like some kind of Dr. Dean Ornish purgatory in which I learn the evils of unhealthy eating and also learn a very valuable lesson, all set to the soundtrack of Enya or something. I kind of expected Susan Powter to pop up in long robes and give me some kind of opportunity to redeem myself nutritionally. Penny gave me a bit of her soft pretzel and I knocked the salt off it, gnawing on it until I began to feel better. I think it acted like a grease sponge.

Penny and Carissa then made me feel all squishy. Penny is in the middle of a divorce and was feeling unattractive. We were playing the ‘Who Would You Do?’ game and we had both decided that we wanted the man we dubbed ‘Goatee Man’. Because he, you know, had a goatee and stuff. I then told her that if he honestly couldn’t make up his mind between her and me that I would gracefully bow out and besides, I had that whole Esteban thing going on. I then spotted a guy who looked hot from afar but then when he got closer, he looked not so hot. I declared him a Monet and opted back to Goatee as my Hottie Of Choice. Penny then mentioned that she probably is a Monet too, which, by the way, she is not. She’s very lovely, both inside and out. I then opined that it does not matter how attractive people are on the outside, it is self-confidence that draws people to you. You can be the most attractive person in the world but if you don’t believe it, no one else will. Likewise, you might not be all that cute, but if you know that you are, at least to someone, then the world will think so too. And then we got all Afterschool Special and Penny told me that one of the things she really liked about me was my refusal to be knocked down by society’s assumptions of beauty. And then Carissa told me that she was honored to have me as a friend. And I told them that I was honored to have them as friends. And we weren’t even drinking yet. It was a beautiful thing. (sniff)

Then, weirdness. My Uncle showed up with my cousins, Skinny and Malnourished. Apparently Aunt Brumhilda didn’t want to attend. To prove a point, I asked Penny how old she thought Skinny was. Penny, knowing that I was making a point, guessed high and said ’13?’. Wrong. She’s 15 and a half but she looks maybe 11. Malnourished looks like she’s 8 or 9 and she’s 13. It’s just wrong, but thankfully, they actually looked as though they’ve been getting a bit more to eat. I think Aunt Brumhilda is losing the war as they get older. Or maybe someone’s sneaking them food. I made them go fetch me soda from outside of the grandstand, where it was cheaper and then gave them a tip. They’re such great kids. Skinny made us all feel old though when she said ‘I don’t even know who these guys are’ and then I realized that Journey had broken up before Skinny was born.

When Journey came out and started singing, we realized that we couldn’t stand up to dance without blocking the view of the people behind us who did not want to stand. Because we were in one of the very first rows, we would have caused this entire chain reaction of standing and blocking that I really didn’t want to be responsible for, so Carissa and I booked down to the ‘Standing Area’ in front of the stage. The ‘Standing Area’ was actually the racetrack where they do tractor pulls and demolition derbies and whatnot. It was covered with wood chips and they kept repeatedly warning folks to not smoke, since we were essentially standing upon kindling, but the hubris of inebriated rednecks won out and folks were smoking nonetheless. I kept getting a whiff of a scent that I couldn’t place and then I realized what it was. The entire place smelled like a hamster’s cage. A drunken hamster that smokes Marlboro unfiltereds and is demanding Pabst Blue Ribbon in his water bottle.

Journey was excellent, as was to be expected. However, due to what is my complete life curse, immediately a group of what might possibly have been genetic mutant people came and stood directly in front of us. I am, by no means, short. I am 5 foot 9 inches tall and I felt short next to these people. I came up to mid-shoulder on one guy. I think they were weaned on bovine growth hormone or something. Their women were Amazons. One girl had this enormous head. I think the other girl might not have been an actual girl at all, but rather one of those balloons that they carry around in the Thanksgiving parade. Maybe it was Underdog’s girlfriend or something. I dunno.

They also had a friend who was the ying to their freakishly large yang. He was roughly 4 feet tall and might have been actually a lawn gnome come to life. He was wearing a Hawaiian shirt, unbuttoned, and a goofy Gilligan hat, out from under which popped his comical goofy face. Apparently, there is no beer in the land of Gigantic People and Living Lawn Gnomes because he was very much enjoying the stuff. His entire purpose throughout the entire concert was to jump up and down and try to get the boys from Journey to notice him. I am not making that up. It was very important to him. Unfortunately, he would flail and spasm with little to no regard for the personal space of anyone around him. I almost caught his elbow with my face at least twice. What is more, as the concert progressed, he seemed to lose the ability to speak coherently. He could partially sing the lyrics to the songs ‘Someday’.love’ find you’ bind you’.touched and went’. Ways!’ and when he wasn’t singing he was either yelling ‘Jerry!’ or ‘Bomb’ Upon later discussion, Carissa and I determined that he probably trying to say ‘Journey’. We’re not really sure what ‘Bomb’ meant.

Later, we moved closer to the stage and the guy standing behind me was huffing on the back of my neck. Huff’ huff’. Yeah Baby!’. Rock!’. huff’huff. He was making me feel all dirty and used somehow. I almost got nostalgic for the lawn gnome.

When the concert was over, we headed back into the car and over to the bar. The bar of my doom. It’s a very very evil bar. Something about it makes me want to get drinky. I think because it is so very fun. This time, we saw absolutely no one that we knew, which was fine because there were five of us, so we were kind of our own little party. A very drunk goatee guy (a different one) wanted to dance with Penny, but she would have nothing of it. Carissa fell in lust with Buzz, one of the bartenders wearing red velvet jeans with the zipper open (it had broken). I immediately guzzled a Malibu and Diet Coke in a magical glowy cup and then switched to Blind Russians because the Malibu was going down too quickly. Big mistake. Three Blind Russians later and I was amazed by how incredible I could dance and how very cool I looked lipsyncing Hot Chocolates ‘You Sexy Thang’. I told Carissa ‘I can tell I’m getting schnocked again because I suddenly think I’m the coolest person in this bar.’ And she, in her wisdom, replied quite effortlessly ‘That’s because you are!’ Carissa is so my friend.

We stayed at Harry’s until I was requiring the assistance of the Magical Brick Wall to hold myself up. I’m not proud of that. Once again, I drank too much, too quickly. Penny and I were both a little in the bag. We were all wearing candy necklaces but our various parts were sticky because we had been sweating. Penny looked like a victim of domestic violence. I had wrapped mine around my wrist because last time I ended up with a disgusting sticky neck and amazingly, I was cognizant enough to not make the same mistake twice, but my hand then got all sticky and discolored. Carissa drove us to Taco Bell, where Penny and I were cracking up at nothing. I think I said that I had leprosy at one point. And I tried to explain the ‘Annihilator’ thing but I’m not sure if it translated well. It probably didn’t matter. Carissa was cracking us up just by looking at us sideways. While going out and getting drunk with sober Carissa is a lot of fun, going out and getting drunk with sober Carissa and drunken Penny is even more fun, because then we have her outnumbered and stuff. And we can laugh at each other.

We then went to Penny’s house where I washed my leprosy off my wrist and then inhaled my chili cheese burrito. And we told each other that we all loved each other. It was a drunken friend/sober friend bonding moment. Another Afterschool Special to frame the evening. Then Carissa drove me home and I was singing fairly badly off key and she was laughing at me, which was fine because I found it fairly humorous myself.

Note to self: don’t go back to that bar. You know that you’re getting old when you realize that you’re not an Afterschool Special anymore’ you’re now a Lifetime For Women Special Event. And that’s just sad. But my drunken mama would undoubtedly be proud, so there’s that. None of this would have happened if we had a bigger tv.

My wrist is still psychedelic though.

I am too drunk to be posting an entry. Seriously.

There were no skinny bitches this time.

There was, however, a very cute bartender named Buzz wearing red velvet pants. Yeah’ I’m pretty sure he was swishy, but Carissa isn’t buying any of it. Because so many heterosexual masculine men voluntarily go out wearing red velvet pants in July. Yeah. That’s what I’m thinking.

Blind Russians and Harry the Hipsters‘ that is my kryptonite.

At one point, I declared that I needed a chili cheese burrito from Taco Bell and knew that it had to be so otherwise the universe would collapse upon itself. Seriously. That’s how important the chili cheese burrito became. Because it is essentially the most important food known to the heavens. It’s chili. It’s cheese. It’s wrapped in a ready to go bread type thing. Whatever it’s called. It’s flat. You know what I mean. Tortilla. That’s what it’s called. A tortilla.

Kahlua plus vodka plus Bailey’s Irish Cream plus retro music equals Weetabix stoned out of her gourd. Damned bar. That’s an evil bar. IT’s all the bar’s fault. Damned bar.

Carissa was des-driver again. She’s a martyr. St. Teresa of the codependent alcoholic set. My Quilt Chica Mary commented, ‘Boy, you don’t drink much but when you do’ watch out.’ I replied that it’s in my genes. It is. My ancestors would be proud.

Corn dogs are not as good as I thought they were.

There seem to be no horses at the fair. Just lots of gargantuan cows. They were frightening. We also saw a wild pig ruckus. It was crazy. Oink oink oink. They really do oink like that. It’s not just like on the See And Say you had as a kid. That’s really what they sound like when they’re pissed off. Don’t piss of the pigs. You’ll get some angry bacon. That’s all I’m saying.

I saw my cousins at the Journey concert. They are bonsaii children. I think my aunt is pinching them to keep them small.

My chin itches.

Blind Russians=bad.

Neil Schon has an orgasm face during almost every guitar riff. It’s quite disturbing. You almost want to go up and slap him and say ‘Oh would you just cut it out already? Christ. Get over yourself.’

But no one did.

At one point, I was dancing exactly like James Brown, only no one seemed to care. At one point, I can almost swear that I was the coolest person in the bar, but no one seemed to notice.

Something about the Kahlua, it seems to bring out the internal sex goddess in me. I’m all hip hip swervy wiggleness and very provocative. It’s amazing really. I was so damned sexy that I almost wanted myself. Damn.

You know what the best song in the world is? I don’t either, but it goes ‘Rocka rocka rocka rocka’ and something about a Tootsie Roll. And need I mention that I was the coolest sexiest person in the bar dancing to that song? No. I don’t. You already know it. Damn right.

Journey’. It’s a good thing. Except for that ‘Wheel in the Sky’ song, because I really hate that one. But the rest’ it’s all good. And the Lovely Carissa is one of my best friends ever.

I cannot sing for shit when I’ve been drinking. Just wanted to declare that to God and everyone. Not like I didn’t already when we were driving down Broadway and I was singing ‘Any Way You Want It’ and trying to accomplish harmonies that I can’t figure out WITH accompaniment anyway, let alone without any music whatsoever and completely from memory. Luckily, Carissa still thinks I’m cool anyway.

Room spinning. Going to bed now. But know this’ if the skinny bitches had been there’ their asses would have been grass. That’s all I’m saying.

I’m going to hell.

I hope they serve Kahlua there.

Actually, if I had a choice, I’d be Cat Woman

Scene: Watching Friends on the TiVo in bed.

Esteban: So… Ross is Mike.

Weetabix: I’ve been saying that since 1994! That’s nothing new…

Esteban: No… listen… Ross is Mike and Joey is Jason.

Weetabix: No he is not!

Esteban: Totally.

Weetabix: (Watches as Joey does something that is completely Jason) Oh my god.

Esteban: See?

Weetabix: Oh my god.

Esteban: I told you.

Weetabix: Wow. I never would have pegged that. But you’re right. He’s totally Jason.

Esteban: I know. Jason is so Joey. Who am I? Does that make me Chandler?

Weetabix: No. You’re so not Chandler. I don’t think we have a Chandler. Do the girls.

Esteban: Maybe Scotty Boom Boom is Chandler. No… not really. Never mind. I withdraw that one. The girls really don’t fit anyone. I’ll have to think about that. Who am I then?

Weetabix: You’re not anyone. I’m not anyone. We supercede the flat Must See Characters. I don’t think that’s a bad thing.

Esteban: But do I remind you of anyone? Not just on Friends, just any show?

Weetabix: You know that comic book store guy on The Simpsons, with the goatee and the ponytail? The one who says “Worst. Episode. Ever!”. You sort of remind me of him sometimes.

Esteban:But that’s just the geeky quality. Jeez… you could have at least made me a Lone Gunman from The X-Files or something. Anything. Someone three dimensional at least.

Weetabix: Eeew. I wouldn’t do any of those guys. Frohickey? Yech. Actually, I wouldn’t do the Comic Book Guy either. I don’t think I’d do anyone in Matt Groening’s world. Overbites….eesh.

Esteban: Maybe you’re Phoebe.

Weetabix: Phoebe??!?! I am so not Phoebe!

Esteban: Well, yeah, kind of. You’ve got that weird hippy quality. And you even dress like a little hippy girl sometimes.

Weetabix: I have NOT! I don’t dress like a hippy!

Esteban: Ok, well, you used to way back when and that’s part of my mind picture of you. And you’re all karma and alien-believing and stuff.

Weetabix: I am not all alien-believing!

Esteban: You don’t believe in aliens?

Weetabix: I don’t NOT believe in aliens. I haven’t put forth much thought into it. I think that it would be the most egotistical thing to assume that we’re alone in the universe, but I’m not lighting a landing strip on our roof for the UFO’s either.

Esteban: Well, see, you’re not totally Phoebe because you’re smart. So maybe you’re a mix of Monica and Phoebe.

Weetabix: Monica? I absolutely hate Monica. She is so screechy. Am I screechy?

Esteban: I know. But that’s what I’m saying… she’s the only smart one.

Weetabix: Why can’t I be Rachel? She’s the only normal one and she likes to shop.

Esteban: Because she’s dumb. But she does have big tits and you have big tits, so you are a little of all of them, I guess. But Phoebe has big tits now, so I’m sticking with a combination Monica/Phoebe. Ok, you’re Smart Monica with Funny Flakey Phoebe and Big Tits Shopping Rachel. Who are you on Buffy?

Weetabix: Hmm… probably Buffy. But she’s talented and cute and I’m not. I don’t think I’m anyone.

Esteban: I think you’re very talented and cute. Who am I on Buffy?

Weetabix: A mixture of Spike and Xander.

Esteban: Xander? Not even Giles? I would have thought Giles.

Weetabix: Very little Giles. It’s all good though. It’s a good mix. I like.

Esteban: Do you relate to any character in a specific way? Maybe someone who you just really understand?

Weetabix: Maybe Maggie on Northern Exposure.

Esteban: Hmmm…. that’s the problem. Girls are written so poorly. Well, guys are written poorly too, but girls are written exceptionally badly. They’re all either housewife/mother, dumb blonde girl, hardass bitter girl wearing leather who is going to stomp on your heart or maybe cut you, man, I’ll cutchew! or… or….

Weetabix: Don’t forget the Meg Ryan. She always plays the same girl…. kind of sweet and a little girl in a woman’s body.

Esteban: Actually, I lumped her in the dumb blond girl category.

Weetabix: You think?

Esteban: Definitely. That movie You’ve Got Mail? She’s so stupid in that movie I can’t even believe it. She deserved to lose her store. And she was in that awful movie… the one with the angel.

Weetabix: I like that movie. But she wasn’t very good in it.

Esteban:I think she was trying to act smart and it didn’t work.

Weetabix: Nic Cage was good though.

Esteban: Oh, yeah, he was great. But she was very bad. And then it had a bad ending. Like I don’t have enough stress in my life that I have to watch a depressing ending. Anyway…you’re like that girl on that one other movie.

Weetabix: (sarcastically) Oh. Yeah. Her.

Esteban: You know, that girl on that movie with that boy. And they were all “No no… yes yes..” That guy… he had the wiggy weird dreadlock thing happening and like that guy… that guy…. (singing) “Don’t call me daughter…. your picture it will remind me….” and he was the singer… who is that singer…

Weetabix: Pearl Jam? Eddie Vedder?

Esteban: Yeah, the Eddie Vedder dude was set up by some guy so that the guy could date the girl’s sister or something?

Weetabix: Ooooh… yeah… Ten Things I Hate About You

Esteban: Um… ok.

Weetabix: Yes… that’s it… Heath Ledger.

Esteban:YEAH! That guy. He’s got dreadlock things in that movie, right?

Weetabix: Sort of. Yeah. Julia Stiles? You think I’m Julia Stiles?

Esteban:I don’t know what her name is but yes.

Weetabix: Aww…. that’s so sweet. I should be offended because she’s a bitch but that’s still so sweet.

Esteban: She’s smart and she got frustrated with all the idiots in her school. She wasn’t a bitch, she was just too clever.

Weetabix: I know. You’re so sweet.

Esteban: It’s hard, though because most characters are so shallow. That’s kind of a rare movie. I was thinking it was Alecia Silverstone though.

Weetabix: You know, that is really based off of The Taming Of The Shrew. So that character was really written by Shakespeare. She was the Shrew.

Esteban: She was just misunderstood.

Weetabix: I know. Now I feel bad about saying you were the Comic Book Guy.

Esteban: Yeah.. well….

Weetabix: Ok… you’re like Duncan McCloud.

Esteban: Now you’re just making things up. (farts) Ahh.

Weetabix: Yeah. Pretty much. But you totally nailed Jason as Joey.

Esteban: See… you think I don’t pay attention. Besides…..Best. Friend. EVER!

Weetabix: Good night Comic Book Guy.

Esteban: Good night my little shrew.

Arbor Day must be a freaking blood bath

Esteban has been working so intensively hard on his various projects once more that I rarely see the man. I find myself staring at him when I do see him, as if I don’t recognize him. ‘Him? I married him? Where was I when that happened?’ I think he’s going a bit feral without the female attention. He’s been wearing his long hair sans ponytail and it is all bushy from the humidity. I don’t think he’s had pants on in weeks because he’s essentially supervising himself.

I could very easily get used to the single life, as long as there was someone there to kill any moths that get into the house for me. And open ketchup bottles.

Nah, on second thought, I’m not that crazy about ketchup. Although my last jar of lingonberries did gave me a bit of a problem. Ah well. So much for that.

I was complaining to Scotty Boom Boom about the way this summer is already circling around the seasonal drain and I hadn’t gotten nary a single project done that I had intended. In fact, all the projects I have for this year are really last year’s projects that never were accomplished last year. For instance, I’m really sick of looking at a strip of bare earth in the front of our house where Esteban dumped dirt four summer’s ago, to prevent the basement from leaking. The idea was to put some landscaping there, a bed of some sort and a tree I had fallen in love with last summer, but nothing ever came of it. Why? Because it requires warm weather and in the summer, we are two carefree mofos, not to mention the fact that Esteban worked constantly all last summer and has begun to do the same this summer.

‘Well, hell, I can dig a hole for you!’ Scotty Boom Boom offered, also volunteering our good friend Eric. I promised them an ice cold 12-pack of Leinie’s Creamy Dark, a large High Maintenance Pizza, which I would go and get so it would be hot and lovely when they were done planting my tree. And then Scott said that it’s not even a little hard to remove the existing sod from an area and he just did a ten by ten square in like ten minutes by kicking a shovel or something, so I threw in some brownies and bought myself some indentured servants’ er, I mean, nice friends who are willing to do manual labor for good eats and cold beer.

So my plan was to go to The Hundred Dollar Store (aka Home Depot’ so called because every time I walk into that place, it costs no less than $100), purchase some fancy landscaping spray paint (the nozzle points down’ it costs like $4 more than regular stuff. I guess so you don’t have to tilt your wrist or something. I dunno. I’m such a sucker.), some landscaping fabric, stakes, and edging. Cool. Did that. Then Esteban starts to play with the project, even though I specifically was tackling this with my own resources and pinnache. Maybe we shouldn’t use the black edging stuff? Maybe we should get bricks? Well, yes, dear, but I got the black edging stuff so you wouldn’t have to edge and I didn’t get bricks so I wouldn’t have to use the truck. So it goes. God. How to go from My So-Called Life to The Real World to Everyone Loves Raymond in ten easy years. Blech.

Ok, I was all set. The boys were going to come over when I had the tree. My job for today’ get beer, spray paint the swoopy design that the bed would be in, buy a tree, make brownies, get pizza. No big. I could handle this.

I got their preferred beer and the brownie ingrediants on my lunch hour. Check one and a half things off the list. I was so efficient. And I wasn’t even using a LIST! I was in the zone. I was kicking ass and taking names at the organization.

I should have known that it couldn’t be that easy.

I raced home and changed into some old shorts (taking caution to not wear my cute sporty new clothes’ very frugal, very efficient). Then I stepped outside and grabbed the spray paint. I looked down at my cute white sneakers and had a thought. Oooh, if the wind blows the wrong way, I’m going to get yellow spray paint all over my sneakers. I slipped them off and then proceeded to plot out the new bed.

And speared the bare arch of my foot with a stick which was poking out of the ground.

What is it with me and subcutaneous wood? I mean, seriously. I must have been one of the Romans who nailed Christ to the cross in a former life or something and this is my debt, to spear myself ridiculously with errant sharp objects. I tried to tough out the pain but then I realized that it was bleedy. Lawn Graffitti 101 was concluded for the day. I hobbled into the house, passing with chagrin my lovely white sneakers with the big thick soles and then poured a bunch of hydrogen peroxide over the puncture, followed by a nice Band-Aid. Then it started to swell, so I put it up with an ice pack. I sat there and basically stewed because that stick used to be a very small fir tree that Esteban had not liked in the front yard. I had tried nursing it back to health with Muracid and all sorts of stuff, but it just gave up and turned orange. And sat there for a year, all orange and Charlie Brown Christmas, but without the kids standing around, tilting their heads up singing ‘Loo loo loo loo loooo loooo loo loo’ with their lips pursed up into the sky. So apparently, he had gotten sick of it and cut it off at ground level. Well, almost ground level. It was enough to drive a person batty. Or suddenly understand all of those disgruntled hostile wives that there are in the world.

God, it’s a good thing I didn’t attempt brownies. I might have sniffed cocoa into my sinus’ and thought I was Anson Williams, beloved character actor well-known for his riveting portrayal of ‘Potsy Webber’ on televisions Happy Days. And who knows what might have happened then? I shudder even to think.

Esteban later came home and announced that we had to go get the tree. I slapped on my hippy sandals and limped out to the truck. We went to the nursery and I picked out my tree, ignoring Esteban’s plebian tree preferences. We’ve already got two towering pine trees’ I’d like some snobby flora for once. We finally found my Weeping Mulberry tree. I had told Esteban that I thought it was about $120, so he was very pleased to see that I had been mistaken and it was only $70. I hobbled back into the greenery and purchased my tree and a bag of poo to line the hole.

Esteban put it into the truck bed, standing upright, and directed me to hold it up from inside the cab. I shook my head, thinking of the tree snapping off at cab height, but he would hear nothing off laying the thing on its side. Then one of the garden center girls came out and suggested that we lay the thing on its side, but he brushed her off, saying ‘We only live seven miles away’. We stopped at the Poo Porch (where they keep the manure’ I made that name up, though. No one thought it was funny. Esteban accused me of being four-years-old. Sometimes I feel very alone. sniff) and picked up the bag of manure when the owner came out and suggested that we lay the tree down on its side, stating that the leaves would shrivel off the thing and die. Finally, Esteban rolled his eyes and flipped the tree downward, envisioning all of the dirt he’d have to sweep out of the bed of his truck. And this is the guy who drove around for two weeks with Joel’s rotting silage in the back when it was 90 degrees. Chyeah. Whatever.

We started to move and the tree shifted. I looked into the back and noticed that he had the branches pointing down, with the pot end in the front of the truck. I mentioned that the inertia of the truck moving would force the tree toward the tailgate of the truck, essentially breaking all of the branches. He sighed, rolled his eyes again, and stopped the truck, getting out to flip it around.

And then he stubbed his toe on the wheel of the truck. He winced in utter agony and then returned to the truck. He reached down and peeled the toenail from his big toe completely off. I swear to God, it was like a scene from a horror movie. I could almost hear the “Eee Eee Eee!” from Psycho. I think I saw sinew. I’m not sure. I’ve never seen sinew, but if I had to point out sineous tissue, I would have had to say that’s it.

I almost fainted. The vision of the tender white inner arch of my foot being impaled by an inch-thick rotten twig was immediately driven from my mind by the image of him peeling back his broken toenail. GAH! I almost started to weep for him in the car. He turned white. Poor guy. I tried to make him as comfortable as possible, offering to drive, but he toughed it off after a few blocks. Being a guy is so hard sometimes. If it had been me, I would still be crying. I would have already called in sick tomorrow with Naked Toe. Eeesh.

So there it is. I got nailed in the foot by an ex-tree that Esteban had handled poorly. Esteban got nailed in the foot by the tree that is going in almost the exact same spot as the Former Twig.

Keep scoffing at karma. Go ahead. It will bite you in the ass every time.

And the next time some tree-hugging hippy tells me to be nice to the earth and plant a tree, I’m going to tell him to pack his anal cavity with hummus and back slowly into a cage of badgers. And if that takes too long, I’ll just tell him to go to hell.

Damn wooden stuff.

Day In The Life Of A Funny Girl

Just now:

Weetabix: (Answering the phone and seeing Carissa on the caller id) Technical Support This is Weet-‘ Hey.

Carissa: Hey.

Weetabix: What’s up?

Carissa: I’m, uh, reading your diary. What’s up with this ‘momtalk’ thing, which means ‘no bloody way in hell’.

Weetabix: Well’

Carissa: That’s not what I meant.

Weetabix: That’s what MY mom meant when she said that.

Carissa: Well, I’m trying.

Weetabix: Ok. Try.

Carissa: It was very funny though.

Weetabix: I’m a funny girl.

Carissa: You should have called them ‘skinny bitches’ though. They totally were skinny bitches.

Weetabix: I didn’t?

Carissa: No. What did you call them’. ‘snotty girls’.

Weetabix: Oh. Well, I didn’t want to offend skinny non-bitches. I think people thought I was making a comment like I didn’t like skinny people or something when in reality some of my very best friends are skinny non-bitches.

Carissa: They WERE skinny bitches though.

Weetabix: But not because they were skinny. That was just a characteristic.

Carissa: Yeah. Well’.

Weetabix: Yeah. I know.

Carissa: Beeyatches.

Weetabix: I hate them too.

Carissa: Ohhh.

Weetabix: You know, people really like that entry, though. I think because I was all drunk.

Carissa: I know. You were very funny.

Weetabix: I’m a funny girl.

Carissa: You ARE a very funny girl.

Weetabix: I’m just saying.

Carissa: You ROCK.

Weetabix: Thank you. You rock too.

Carissa: We both rock.

Weetabix: And rock hard.

Carissa: Yeah.

Weetabix: Cool.

Carissa: I still hate those skinny bitches.

Weetabix: I know. Me too.

Carissa: Yeah. I’m just saying.

Weetabix: Yep. You’re sayin’. I’m hearin’.

Ok, that probably wasn’t all that funny, but it amused the crap out of me and it’s my diary so there it is.

Play it now, play it now, play it now my babeeee Chyeah!!!

So my Tivo.

I’ve been using it religiously. To record Friends. Cry for me now. Mofo Friends. And not the new Friends that I missed because I was watching Big Tom and Big Tom’s Ass Crack on Survivor. No. I’m recording classic 1994 Friends repeats. You know, back when Joey wasn’t a mongoloid and Monica wasn’t freakishly thin with a nose that could slice cheese and she didn’t scream so much. And I think that Ross actually might have had a penis back then too.

How you doin’?

I am oh so glad that I now owe the government a luxury car for my education in classic literature. Seriously. That’s money well spent right there.

I read The National Enquirer sometimes too. I know. I’m ashamed. But not too ashamed to jump on any copy that talks about how Meg Ryan is trying to use sex to lure Russell Crowe back to her adorably cute arms. That’s educational too, I suppose. Like, maybe I want to see if it can actually be accomplished. Because I’d like me some of that there randy salty goodness’. No wait, pesky little marriage license thing. Shit.

But seriously’ how you doin’?

Don’t worry. I have shame for this. I do ab crunches the entire time that I watch American Idol and Jackass. It’s a penance. The National Enquirer‘ well, its punishment is that I leave it in the bathroom’ aka Room Of Strange And Also Wonderful Things. Wonderful in that I am often naked in there. Strange in that Esteban spends some royally foul ass time in there as well.

There it is then.

That’s one of my favorite sayings, by the way. Those of you who know me in person know this already. It occurred to me that I rarely actually write that out but I say it an awful lot. I usually imagine that it comes out sounding slightly British, which would make me sound so much more clever, but in actuality, it probably makes me sound like a master of the obvious. But there it is then.

Unlike ‘I’m Just Sayin&AO8AvwC9AO8AvwC9-, which I write and say with a fair amount of frequency. Strange how stuff like that works.

Today, Pretty Penny and I had an intervention with the Lovely Carissa. She’s been making waffle noises about going to MulletFest 2002 (aka Journey concert this weekend at the local county fair, after the tractor pull’ I am not making that up. Shut up. I am not.) because she’s unsure if she can get a babysitter for her child. Her husband is taking their oldest child to Chicago for a Nascar race. I’m not making that up either. Her husband thinks my Monte Carlo is sexy. I adore him anyway. But back to MulletFest 2002, she isn’t sure if she’s going or not, so instead I had to remind her how much fun MulletFest 2001 we had, and how it was one of my favorite days from last summer. She responded ‘Well, we’ll see’ which is Momtalk for ‘I don’t bloody think so’ and Penny pouted a bit so I started singing ‘Don’t stop beleeeeeevin’ to which Carissa joined in and we quietly sang the chorus because we were standing in a cube farm and were surrounded by a bunch of Hindu contractors who already look at me with great awe, as though they don’t know whether they should have sex with me or worship at my feet.

Either would be fine, actually.

And then Carissa’s boss came around the corner and said that we sounded lovely, much to our shame and embarrassment. Well, mine, mostly because I don’t know him and he looks a bit like a Kennedy. And then he said we should have sung louder and the entire song. Sadly, I think we could have done it from memory too.

It’s all about how not cool I am. I am such a colossal dork sandwich sometimes. Seriously. Sometimes I’m so damn hot I can barely stand it and then other times I’m all excited to catch ‘Cracklin Rosie’ by Neil Diamond on the radio when I’m making a hummus run at lunch. Bah Ba Bup Ba Bah! Chyeah!

On a similar note: If Carissa is able to go to MulletFest with Penny and I, I’ve declared that we are going to the Retro Bar. The bar Carissa and I have gone to twice and has twice seen the serious kicking of my non-alcoholic curvy medium-jeans fitting ass. Carissa gave me a speculative look and I swore that I’d be good and she replied ‘No, you can’t help it.’ And I agreed with her. It’s a bad bar for me. It makes me do evil things. Evil things with tasty liquor. And seriously, if the two snotty girls are there again, I’m taking them out. Malibu or no Malibu. I’m going to flatten them.

Well, not like they weren’t flat already!

Oooh! Already it starts. I know that many of you are setting your alarms for a nice drunken Weet entry early this Saturday morning. I should be ashamed, but I’m not. Not even a little.

I’m just fooling myself that I’m not a big hivey lump of white trash.

There it is then. Chyeah!

Karma punishes the Self-Righteous. Martha Stewart better watch her…

oh, wait. Sometimes, I think I really should have listened more closely to all of that new age hippy dippy crap that was floating around my childhood home. You know, the one that believed that if you had an ear infection it was because you were listening to gossip, rather than routing around with dirty Q-tips in there. I remember one year I got a Herman Hesse library for Christmas. I was 11. Seriously. You try reading Siddhartha when you’re 11. Just you try it. The following year, I got some Carlos Casteneda and also Anne of Green Gables. Now THERE’S a literary cocktail. You’d have thought it would have sunk in. I mean, I believe in karma, on some level. I really do. But would I actually take a moment and apply it to my life? Kind of like, What Would Buddha Do? No. Because that would make sense. And I’m not about making sense on any level. I’m about frolicking along on my merry little way, wanting the instant gratification at any cost and delighting in such hedonistic pleasures as a smug sense of self-righteousness.

So the hives.

The sun block I used gave me hives.

The sun block that I touted around with serious smug glee over Esteban’s sunburned blisters. ‘SPF 45’ I’d sniff, looking dismally sympathetic to his pain, when inside my head, a holy roller shouted ‘Repent, sunchild, and ooze on the splotchy hell fires of melanoma! Thou shalt use the UVA protection or face eternal suffering not to mention premature wrinklies!! Bwahahaha!’

It’s karma.

The very fact that I have a perfect hive pattern in the negative shape of my swimsuit is complete and utter poetic irony. And not the Alannis Morrisette kind of ironic either.

It started Friday. I’ve had this entire Tip O’Neal thing happening on my face, all red and splotchy. Ok, maybe that was the rosacea, although I’d never seen it quite like that. My dermatologist did change my prescription, so maybe it was the new face junk. Ok. Prescriptives makeup mostly covered it. Not a problem. But then I started to notice that my shoulders and back hurt. A lot. As though I had gotten sunburn, even though they weren’t burned in the least. My armpits, which HAD gotten a burn, were doing marvelous. It was all very puzzling. Then it started to itch. I began gyrating against doorjambs, digging furiously at what I could reach. A lovely splotchy mess appeared on my back and shoulders, matching my rosy complexion.

Apparently, I must have carelessly used some of whatever was lying around the pool for a quick reapplication on my ‘high parts’ which had been feeling a little burn on Thursday. My back, shoulders and face.

It’s karma. I suck.

After a miserable night of little sleep followed by a half hour shower this morning as I let the water beat upon my back (hey, it’s not technically scratching!), I called my dermatologist. ‘I have a horrible rash. I’m miserable. It’s getting worse. I have hives all over my back and I may very possibly be driven to insanity by this evening if it’s not taken care of.’ I said to the receptionist, envisioning miracle cures, instant shots which would visibly reduce the hives before my eyes, like stop action photography or something.

‘I can get you in for September.’ The snotty receptionist replied, as though she were actually doing me a favor.

‘No. You don’t understand. I will be one gigantic hive in September. People will look and point at the pulsating red girl begging strangers on the corner to scratch the spots on her back. I’ll be giving blowjobs for hydrocortisone by then. Please. You’ve got to help.’ I beseeched her.

‘I can get you in for early September. Otherwise, you’d better call your primary care physician.’

I hate the dermatologist. Seriously. I had half an urge to walk into that office, lift my shirt and say ‘Scratch it, bitch! And use your fucking nails!’

So I called Doctor Perky. She was busy until 3:30. I didn’t want to wait that long, so I managed to see her nurse practitioner in the morning. He wouldn’t give me a shot of anything because I had other things to do that day, such as driving myself home and sitting upright without drooling. He did give me more Prednisone and some kind of HyrdaCortexBlisterMakeItStop stuff. And told me to keep schmearing it with hydrocortisone.

One cool thing though: Got weighed. I’m about ten pounds shy of my wedding day weight, which makes sense because I can wear my medium jeans and that’s the last time I wore those. I suppose I could just think of them as weight levels instead of sizes (they’re all the same size but they fit completely different). He also decided that the snotty bitch who got my weight wrong by 50 fucking pounds must have screwed something else up because otherwise, I lost almost 24 pounds since June 11 and that just doesn’t make sense. I stuck my tongue out at her when I left. Then I asked her nicely if she’d scratch my hives.

Mofo karma. Gah.

Dear Opi,

My fingernails look smashing, except that I realized today that you must have gotten this color by melting down thousands of Malibu Barbie Dream Cars. The color is freakishly pink.

I like it.

Sincerely,
Weetabix

Dear Mattel,

So how’s that whole ‘Screwing Up the Self-Image of Young Girls and Confused Boys with Freakishly Proportioned Fashion Dolls’ thing working out for you? Great. Listen, you should really think about giving Ken a unit. Age 13 is NOT the time to find out that boys don’t sport a small hard plastic nub. I’m just saying.

Thanks,
Weetabix.

Dear Pool Goddess,

You’re my new hero, too.

Rock on,
Weet

At least he’s a cheap date

Esteban has decided that he wishes that people had a stupidity bell inside their brains, the kind that would go off when they are about to do something stupid. His theory is not only would that eradicate drunk driving, the Home Shopping Network and Ricky Martin, it would also have forced him to put on sunscreen on the Fourth of July. He has second-degree burns with blisters on his shoulders. You can set a watch by his need for aloe vera. It’s insane. Meanwhile, I’ve been doing an admirable job of not being smugly self-righteous. He did actually tell me that I was smart the other day. Of course, he was wincing in pain and I had in my hand his lidocaine burn gel, so maybe it was the blisters talking.

Friday was a complete bust. Esteban was too cranky to do anything and we ended up sitting at home, watching DVDs. He’s been essentially miserable and thus has been doing his best to make me miserable as well. That’s his job as whiny sick guy and one he takes on with relish. And mustard.

On Saturday, I declared that I was not going to waste another day moping around the house, recoiling every time something brushes against his back. I tanked him up on Advil Liquid-Caps and we went to Door County, with the promise of fresh cheese curds and cherries. Traditionally, the week of the Fourth is sweet cherry season, but we had a late spring and they are not ready yet. I did manage to locate one stand who imported them from elsewhere, so I purchased a pint of burgundies and a pint of the yellowy/red ones. I’m not sure what they’re called, but they’re like fruit porn they’re so good. I expect a Wakka Chicka Wakka Chicka soundtrack when I bite into them. I was whispering ‘Oh you want it, baby, you know you want it!’ to them before I would sink into their taut little plump flesh. They’re big, too, like little miniature peaches or something. I basically rode around eating cherries, spitting the seeds onto the side of the road. It’s as close to paradise as it gets for me in the summer, eating plump luscious sweet cherries and driving around with the Offspring blaring while assuaging my cranky husband. Maybe not the last part.

I forced us to drive further up the peninsula to stop at the British store, where I ended up with some raspberry curd, a couple of Cadbury lovelies, including my beloved Fuse bar, some toffee, some Walker’s shortbread, and a giddy sense of accomplishment. Oh, and you’re just kidding yourself if you think I didn’t buy some Hob Nobs while I was there. I had to replace the ones I gave Angeline-Is as a going away present. And a few more. Hey. I know that a 96 calories per Nobbly Goodness Cookie is counterproductive to Operation Hottie, but I’m stocking up. Seriously. Winter’s coming. Soon. This is Wisconsin and the roads will be closed and I won’t be able to get my Nobs, so just back off and no one gets hurt.

Ahem. Anywho’

While I was at one of the various tourist stands, I had an epiphany. Esteban is a consummate wino. In the worst way. He loves cheap sweet wine and he doesn’t have hangovers from it. What is more, wine gives him Golden Happy Sleep, similar to my affinity for codeine. It is for this reason that I can keep no codeine in the house and Esteban cannot keep wine in the house. We have wine, mind you, but it is mine. I have to claim it even though usually it is purchased with Esteban’s credit card, much like a European explorer discovering land which was already inhabited by indigenous people. Once I declare that it is mine, he knows that he cannot swig it down like Ben Affleck at a whiskey tasting festival. I have to admit, the man has admirable self-control, because if he brought codeine into the house, it would be pilfered. I’m not proud of that. It’s just a fact.

So I encouraged him to purchase some cherry wine, a local vintage. He looked at me and grabbed a bottle immediately. That was when I realized that he, like any true addict, had been staring at the racks of wine the entire time, mentally plotting their plunder down his gullet. He was happy. Then we had to stop at the local Target and I had to run in and get some more Aloe Vera stuff for him. While I was in there, I purchased him some espresso dark chocolate to further soothe his cantankerous outlook. It worked smashingly. Or maybe it was the fact that he had a tummy full of warm cheese curds and the prospect of an entire bottle of cheapass wine filling the evening ahead of us.

We stopped at the parents’ house and let their dogs out (Ward & June went on a day trip somewhere) and I swam a bunch of laps around the pool. Esteban cowered in the safety of the living room, which has an SPF of 10345. He had learned his lesson, apparently. He kept the door to the backyard open in case I drowned, although I would have had to scream like a Mariah Carey at VH1 Divas for him to have heard me. The things we do for a guilt free conscience.

Then we went home and I popped in The Shipping News which had Kevin Spacey in it, as well as Cate Blanchett and Judy Dench. I remarked at one point that it was weird because both Cate and Dame Judy had been nominated for an Oscar for playing the same Queen Elizabeth, but Esteban had ensconced himself quite heartily in the bottle of cherry wine. I mean that literally. He was drinking straight from the bottle. I never even got a sip. I don’t think he remembers the end of the movie. Neither do I, but I wasn’t drinking. I think the book must have been better or something. He did remark at one point that Julienne Moore is ‘incredibly beautiful’ and then I told him that he can look at her naked body in Boogie Nights if he wanted, to which he responded with a thumbs up. Yep. When his discourse is reduced to gesticulation, Houston, we have achieved full body numbing.

Then he decided to go surfing. I was reading an email that Chauffi had sent me and made some comment about how he always makes me giggle. So Esteban decided to go and check out his diary. Oh my gosh. Do you remember that feeling in junior high when you found out that your dad was going to chaperone the big formal dance? And you knew that he was going to wear his powder blue tuxedo; the one with the matching blue ruffles because, hey, it still fit? Yeah. Immediately, I had fear in my heart. I mean, Esteban was pretty lubed at that point, having downed an entire bottle of rather alcoholic wine and having had nothing for dinner but some cheese curds and chocolate. I turned to look at his computer and found him entering something on Chauffi’s guestbook, my worst fear confirmed. Already I was embarassed.

‘No! No! Behave! Don’t make a fool of yourself!’ I said and then swatted him on the back for emphasis, without thinking.

‘OOOooooooooooh!!!!! Oooooooh!!!!’ He laughed. ‘Nooooooo! You’re a harpy! You’re an evil woman!’ He said, affecting some drunken Esteban accent. I can’t explain it. It’s like he’s 4-years-old. I withdrew my hand in horror that I had touched his sunburn and then burst into laughter at his insane cherry wine babbling. He then mocked some things that he was going to write, which cracked me up more.

And then I passed out. Yep. It happened again. Luckily, I was sitting in my computer chair and it was only for a moment. And when I came too, I was still laughing and Esteban was still giving me the maniacal ranting, which made me laugh all the more.

Here is where an honest to goodness journalist would tell you about how close they came to filling their boxer shorts with urine.

But I am not that journalist. I will not tell you about how I can be driven to actually pee my pants by hysterical laughter. I refuse to do it. It would give me utter and complete shame if I had to tell you that I had to actually run through the house, still laughing, in a strange, hunched over run, squeezing my chubby thighs together to prevent myself from peeing all over our already pee-stained living room. (Oh, from the 19-year-old cat, not from me, cripes). And I’m not going to explain that I then had to go and put on a fresh pair of boxer shorts because I was actually afraid that I possibly hadn’t made it fast enough.

Oh, now that would be embarrassing, let me tell you.

When the laughter had ceased and I had made my wardrobe change, I came back into the computer room to reply to Chauffi and explain Esteban’s ridiculous drunken email. He then turned and saw that I was typing out the email to Chauffi and in his drunken paranoia, quickly made another guestbook entry.

So that was Esteban’s first foray into Diaryland. And it was marked with pain and alcohol. Very Movie Of The Week. Hopefully, he won’t try it again.

I may be forced to pull out his nose hairs. And honestly, that is just yuck.

How do you like your Esteban? Burnt to a crisp or pink in the middle?

I spent the entirety of yesterday in my bathing suit.

I’ve never liked the term ‘bathing suit’ because it always reminds me of those head-to-toe numbers that people used to wear in the early 1900’s. Like perhaps I should be ashamed that anyone looked at my ankles or some such.

Honestly, it was a fabulous day. We had a tremendous violent rain storm on Wednesday, which broke our hell-like heat wave into the low 70’s with nary a humid droplet in sight. I woke up late and lazed around, taking entirely too long to decide what to wear in the car to Ward and June’s house, actually changing from a grey polo shirt and blue shorts to a red tshirt with a keyhole back and matching shorts. I’m a tad ridiculous sometimes. Luckily Esteban wasn’t around to witness my girly idiocy. He had spent the morning working because he is much like a mouse with a wheel right now, working tirelessly on his project.

Then I slathered on the SPF 45 and turboed over to Chez Parents where I quickly shed my hardwon outfit and donned my suit. Esteban was already there and jumped quickly into the pool. I, on the other hand, lounged on a chaise for a bit, loving the sun on my skin. Esteban sneered at the idea of sunscreen, needing, in his words ‘a little color’.

This is the point when the Greek chorus who comments on our misdeeds and grave errors in judgement would have piped up and sung about skin cancer and possibly the terror of the Roman regime.

I have seen so many rather spectacular burnings of my ass that I do not dally with the sun protection. My entire family is comprised of sun creatures, turning a golden bronze that would make George Harrison jealous. (Oops…George Hamilton… maybe I did get a little too much sun) They all have that yellow or olive pigmentation. I, on the other hand, am pasty and fair, a consummate spring, freckling even when I see a commercial for Baywatch. My mom would bring coconut oil to the beach and nothing else, not even considering her plump little albino eldest child. I’ve had second degree sunburns. I’ve had blisters. I’ve been nauseous. There was one time after a long day at the lakeshore when I was so badly burnt that I actually couldn’t fall asleep, spending the night reading Trixie Belden books and misting myself with water. I remember I finally collapsed when the chills set in at 7:00 A.M., wearing my jean jacket, with only my knees and my forehead touching the sofa. Thus, I learned to become well-versed in UVA protection.

I applied sunscreen when I got dressed, again about fifteen minutes before I actually got into the pool, and then every time I got out of the pool or started to feel my skin tighten. I know exactly when it’s happening, can feel my skin start to tremble with the impregnation of the sun’s rays. It’s a survival instinct, that’s all.

We had a lot of fun playing in the pool. Esteban has a new trick of retrieving the dive sticks with his mouth. After several attempts, I can do it about half the time, but the real problem is that I have a hard time getting down to the bottom of the pool to grab them with my teeth. Apparently, in the event of a water landing, my ass can be used as a floatation device.

At one point, I dared Esteban to swim all the way across the pool underwater. He took a big breath and dove under and as his butt crested the surface of the pool, his swim trunks came down. We were all treated to a winter-white butt breaching the surface like some’ dare I say it’ kracken. He bobbed to the surface almost immediately because his shorts had fallen to his knees, impeding his swimming ability. I was laughing so hard that I almost fainted. As it turned out, no one else witnessed the ass-baring. God, so many moonings recently.

Mo and Abby came over as well, and a merry time was had by all. Abby is a complete daredevil and Esteban delighted in throwing her bodily through the air into the water. He threw me at one point too, but apparently in mid-flight, I kicked him near his meat and potatoes, so he won’t try it again. Party pooper.

Later, Scotty Boom Boom came over and June fed him (because that’s a rule, she must feed you if you look to be of average BMI. She’s not happy until you eat. Dieting is a bitch around June.) and then we watched MSNBC and their programming of ‘When Stupid People Play With Fireworks’. And who says there are no modern morality plays?

That’s when we noticed that Esteban looked a bit rosy. Uhhuh. Major sunburn. He’s actually got blisters, poor thing. I’ve managed to restrain myself from doing an ‘I told you so’ dance. I’m certain that he feels enough chagrin given the fact that his milky white wife is happy and painfree. Actually, not completely, as I did get a little touch of pink in my armpits of all places. Must have missed a spot. Still, not as bad as Esteban, who is currently stuck to the sheets in bed as I’m writing this. I have to keep applying lidocaine & aloe vera gel to him every couple of hours. He woke me up this morning from a sound sleep because he needed a lidocaine fix on his unreachable parts. His only comment is that it’s been a good three or four years since he’s had a bad burn, so he’s forgotten. Doh!

I’m ready for another round in the pool tomorrow, though. I’m not sure about him. He’s very cantankerous and surly. I think I might have to dope him up on scotch and Noxema tonight.

My next husband will understand the need for proper SPF.
