All I ever needed to know was found on Premium Cable Channels

The furnace girl came in yesterday, as she said she would.

I know. I was floored too. And the kid with the fever was doped up on Children’s Motrin so he managed to keep his temperature below 100 until 3:30 when the daycare called his mom and told her to come and get her sick child. But that didn’t matter to me because I was out of there by 1:00 pm for my make-up half day! I actually ran from the building, certain that a long rubber arm was going to snake through the corridors and pull me back to my desk. I watch too many Tim Burton movies, I think.

Thus, I went home and began the slow and arduous process of trying to create a semblance of order in Club Chaos… aka Chez Weetabix. There is still luggage in our living room from the Atlanta trip. I began taking care of things, putting away dishes which had long ago air dried, taking out garbage, fixing our computer network which had lost internet connectivity, doing laundry, etc. End result: things are done but you can’t tell. I think I need a bulldozer.

I also watched Urban Cowboy on American Movie Classics. First off, does it disturb anyone else that Urban Cowboy is considered a classic? I think AMC is trying to appeal to a younger audience. I mean, I enjoy the heck out of that movie and will pretty much watch it any time it comes on, but a classic?

The first time I saw that movie, it was making its first appearance on HBO. I was 9 or 10 and we inexplicably had full cable (which, back then, only cost something like $15). They played Urban Cowboy nearly every day. And I was transfixed. Not just because Debra Winger reminded me of my Aunt Sharon and cowboy paraphernalia was all the rage, but also just the sheer trashiness of it all. It doesn’t shield you from the grit and sordid truth of that sort of life. It is unapologetic and therefore almost has a documentary feel. The way that Sissy goes braless and only wears tanks or halter tops throughout the entire movie. The way that Bud walks around as though there were an invisible string tied around his penis, pulling him forward. The way they live in a trailer and Sissy doesn’t wear pantyhose at her wedding and is wearing white cowboy boots with her bare feet. It’s like a primer on becoming white trash.

And honestly, Travolta and Winger are excellent. Winger can whine like nobody’s business and when you add a Texas twang, it’s breathtaking. Travolta truly does have a talent for playing big stupid boys, even though his range of emotions is portrayed by nostril flairs. Seriously. Depiction of being turned on: flared nostrils. Depiction of anger: flared nostrils. Depiction of drunkenness: flared nostrils. Depiction of fear at hanging by an ankle off an oil rig: upside down flared nostrils. But I forgive him for this because he’s very pretty and also who knew the man could ride a dang mechanical bull? And the writing is brilliant. Truly brilliant. It also has the character Wes, played by Clarice’s boss from Silence of the Lambs, Scott Glenn, and he almost exudes sex in a palpable manner. And he also eats the worm from the bottle of Tequila on camera. You’ve just got to love that.

My favorite line in the movie: “You all live like pigs!” (pronounced peegs) Bud’s aunt says, looking at the disgusting sink in Bud and Sissy’s trailer, complete with a rotting can of Hormel Chili. If she had then spelled it out (“P-I-G Pigs!”), ala Babs in Animal House, it would have been absolute perfection. And the remarkable thing is that Bud and Sissy have been married a week! One week and already the sink in their brand new trailer is disgusting and Sissy is already flirting with the guy she’ll later sleep with (not before Bud has diddled a socialite looking for a “real cowboy”, though). I also love the picture taking session at their wedding, where each picture looks horrible, but subtly and therefore realistically. Given the fact that the movie is over 20 years old, they look even more like quintessential bad 70’s wedding pictures. Winger looks positively fetal and Travolta had years of $cientology and Battlefield Earth to look forward to. It’s just so beautiful and real I can hardly stand it.

Word of warning, however, do NOT watch the cut version. The movie is roughly 50% cursing, hand gestures, and various rude comments that do not make it past censors. All that’s left is two-step scenes, Winger looking up through her feathered bangs, mechanical bull riding, wife beating, and Travolta flaring his nostrils. You’ll completely lose the trashy flavor of the movie. Also, it’s lovely to see a disturbingly young Bonnie Raitt as one of the entertainers at the bar. Not to mention Barry Corbin from Northern Exposure playing, essentially, a more humble working class Maurice.

It’s certainly no Citizen Kane but I love it for the same reason that I love the other movies which were in heavy rotation on HBO that summer. Xanadu comes to mind. You’ve just got to love Xanadu. Olivia Newton-John with perfectly feathered hair and on roller-skates. And there was also How to Beat The High Cost Of Living with Jane Curtin, Susan Saint James and Jessica Lange. And Jane showed her boobs in that one. Probably the reason you never see huge plastic balls of money in malls anymore… since one could suck the cash out of the bottom with a Wet-Dry Vac. And The Blues Brothers. I’ve still never gotten over my love of John Belushi. 9 to 5 also comes to mind. Mo and I used to repeat “One move and I’ll turn you from a rooster to a hen in one shot” to each other all the time, even though it really made no sense to another girl. I always identified with the Lily Tomlin character. Perhaps I knew, even then, that I’d feel stifled in my career.

And then there was Caddyshack. I didn’t get most of the nuances of that thing, but I still found it humorous. I practiced all summer to be able to get off my bike the way that Danny dismounts his ten-speed in the title sequence. And I’ve already talked about my Coal Miner’s Daughter thing. Tommy Lee Jones was growllll in that, despite his atrociously bad hair cut and dye job. And it also taught me the meaning of the word “horny”.

It was educational, really. Sort of an uncensored tutelage in the real world. In general, I learned that men like it when women take off their tops and when you have sex with a main character, the sheet is tucked very neatly under the armpits of the woman, concealing her breasts. Because sex is over then, so she doesn’t need to show them. And you only ever saw the man’s bare butt. Maybe. Unless it was American Gigolo, in which I seem to remember actually seeing Richard Gere’s penis going into Joan Collins somewhere. And that traumatized me for a good long time.

There were more specifics, of course. Modern Problems warned of the dangers of toxic waste. Seems Like Old Times(Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn had a big year) showed that you should not talk to your ex-husband because it makes your current husband, Charles Grodin, unhappy. The Incredible Shrinking Woman reminded that shrinking is bad for your marriage, especially when married to Charles Grodin. The Blue Lagoon warned that cannibals are bad and sex with your adopted brother on an island will give you a baby. The Shining made me fear little girls and hallways which were flooded with blood and also Scatman Caruthers, simply by association. Bronco Billy taught me that the circus life is not fun and also Scatman Caruthers is scary even away from that mickey fickey hotel. Fame taught me that you don’t hold a violin bow as you would your dick and also not to answer adds in the classifieds asking if you want to be an actress. Private Benjamin taught me not to trust Eileen Brennan. Somewhere In Time showed me how to travel back in time if you thought about it hard enough and if you were also Superman. And it also introduced the time travel paradox into my feeble little brain (“But if she gave him the watch in the beginning and then he left it with her in the past, where did the watch actually COME FROM???”)

You know, this probably all really explains a lot.

Half day smaff day!

They are having a bake sale at work today. Inexplicably, it starts at 6:00 a.m and by 8:00 a.m. most of the goodies are gone. In the morning, you walk in to empty trays and baking sheets, only crumbs left to tease at what goodies were there to be had. I suppose the concept is that the early bird catches the worm. Or cupcake as it were. No one will give any sympathy to the late comers who miss out on the sugar. There’s this whole Midwestern morality all tied up with being an early-riser, as though coming in at 8:00 made you marginally acceptable and woe befalls those who come in at 9:00! I think it’s all inherently related to milking cows, but it’s still boggling.

Anyway, there was a rather seductive pan of brownies, mostly gone. A post-it note promised hidden caramel within the dark moist brownies. I plunked down a quarter and took one, feeling much like Miss Marple to distract myself from the blatant wrongness of a brownie at 7: 40 am. Was there really caramel inside? Or was it all a clever ruse to scam me out of a quarter.

There was indeed caramel inside. And the frosting… oh the frosting. Words cannot describe the delectable silky frosting. It’s that kind of frosting that gets a little crust on top, but is really light and fluffy and slightly grainy as though all the sugar hadn’t completely been incorporated. And the body of the brownie was dense and truffle-like. If I weren’t already married to a rather tasty morsel, I’d want to marry that pan of brownies.

If there was ever any doubt in your mind that I am orally-fixated, the above paragraph ought to have cleared up any confusion rather nicely.

My half-day curse continues. I had a half-day scheduled for today. I figured if I scheduled it in the middle of the week, I’d have a higher likelihood of actually getting to take it. Whenever I schedule a half-day of comp time, my team members decided not to show up for whatever reason and I get stuck working anyway. And this is a makeup half-day from the last time this happened.

Last night, I announced that none of those bastards had better be sick because, as God as my witness, I was not going to get screwed out of my half day again! And I clutched a turnip in my dirty hands while the sun set poignantly behind me for dramatic effect. Didn’t help. Someone called in with a “sick furnace” and another has announced that her child has a fever and she expects that the day care will be calling her a negligent mother any moment now.

It’s enough to drive me to eat another brownie. Maybe if I’m lucky, I’ll go into a sugar coma and the ambulance will come and take me away and I’ll get to take my fucking half-day.

Nah. They’d give me a lap top and a cell phone.

Last night’s dream: Mo and I went to a Monkee’s concert. Strangely enough, it was the Monkees circa 1966, but it was only Peter Tork, Mickey Dolenz, and Davey Jones, such as they were on the Monkees reunion tour circa 1986. So basically, they were old but they looked young. And then somehow Mickey Dolenz pulled me onstage to sing “Bohemian Rhapsody” with him, because that was a perennial Monkees hit and all that. And then Mickey was really Hyde from “That 70’s Show”. And he offered to take a picture of me with Peter Tork and Davey Jones, while thousands of people waited for the Monkees to start singing again. And I tried to tell Davey that my Uterus was always reminding me that I should have married him, but he didn’t get it because, you know, Davey doesn’t read this diary. He just thought I was some kind of freak or possibly a Zappa kid. And then Mickey wanted me to stay up onstage and sing with him but I said “Oh, no, really, Mo and I must be going. We have other plans tonight.” so I walked down off the stage, gathered up my stuff, and three forlorn aged Monkees and an arena full of 9000 silent fans watched us walk up the aisle and out of the building, while Mo was whispering “Why do we have to leave? I want to see the rest of the concert!”

I feel kind of bad now because I lied to Davey in my dream. My Uterus feels that I should have married Donny Osmond, not Davey Jones. Donny’s closer to my age. What is more, Davey is roughly the height of a troll doll. I would crush him between my thighs like a twig. Donny is from hearty Mormon stock and might be able to withstand the intense physical nature of a curvy round sex goddess.

This entry has gone in an entirely disturbing direction. Blame that damn brownie. Note to self: avoid so much luscious chocolate ecstasy so early in the morning. Stick to Diet Coke.

Proof that prepackaged sweetened cereal is the work of the devil

Last Friday, as I was driving down to Milwaukee, I embibed a little Mocha Chocolatte Creole Lady Marmalade sans Starbucks Guy. As I opened my gullet to consume the energetic nectar I was suddenly hit with throbbing pain. What the…? It seems as though one of my fillings had suddenly become extremely sensitive to heat. That was ok. I had brought some Diet Coke along too. I stopped drinking the coffee and opened the Diet Coke and took a big swig. SURGING AGONY!!!

Ok, dental demons, that’s not funny. You don’t mess with the ‘Bix’s caffeine habit.

So I’ve been basically doing all of my drinking and chewing on the left side of my mouth. I stopped by Mo’s house to drop off some Hard Rock Atlanta t-shirts for her and Abby and snarfed up a piece of cold pizza sitting on her counter. Without thinking, I chomped and almost jumped out of my seat! Even at room temperature, it was too cold.

I went into the dentist today. I couldn’t get into Dr. John, so I acquiesced due to the pain and took an appointment with Dr. Puberty. They took x-rays again, because they’ve got a whole x-ray scam going. Seriously. It’s like an x-ray cult at that dentist’s. The worst part was lying there, knowing that she was going to shoot cold air at my tooth, my poor beleaguered tooth. It was actually trembling at one point, in anticipation of the pain. And of course she did shoot cold air at it, not once, but EIGHT times, until I arched my back, my ass hovering three feet off the seat and said “YOU WILL STOP THAT NOW! I’M NOT MAKING IT UP!” And then she made a note with her jelly pen that I was disagreeable and needed four more x-rays.

Turns out that my original filling, the one for the very first cavity I ever had, has a gap between it and the tooth. Thus, it must be removed, and replaced, with a white one because I now can afford to have invisible fillings instead of Poverty silver-colored fillings.

So I’m not looking forward to that.

Well, maybe a little bit. Because that means….

More Nitrous Oxide!!!!!

Can you even believe that I’m facing a needle in my mouth AND sharp insruments, including very probably a DRILL, just to get my mitts on some more nitrous oxide??

Kids, don’t do drugs. Drugs are bad. Don’t be like Weetabix. Drugs will make you choose a job which is in no way related to what you went to college for. Drugs will cause you to think a Nascar ride is the epitome of class and style. Drugs will cause you to have unruly eyebrows and a double chin. Drugs will make you hate Carson Daly and weep because Jackass is not on the air anymore. Drugs are bad!

But nitrous oxide is gooooooood.

Well, only if it’s taken during the process of giving you a lovely smile. No other time.

And eat your vegetables, too.

So, there’s this commercial which just started running for Cinnamon Crispix, and it shows two kids who are taping up their father with clear packing tape, presumably so that there will be more crispity cinnamony cereal for the little selfish brats to enjoy all on their very own, while their father struggles against his bindings. But whatever. Two things about this commercial disturb me: First off, they show a closeup of the father with his mouth taped with the clear tape, only you don’t really see the reflective shine of the tape. You just see his mouth looking somehow wrong. Actually, he looks like the world’s largest and most realistic ventriloquist dummy. And that is the stuff of nightmares, right there, people. And he has this look on his face, this kind of “Oh you silly kids, you silly delicious delectable kids!”

GAH!

Or maybe it’s just me.

Second off, the commercial then takes an even more disturbing tone as the children prepare to exit the bedroom, after the entire bondage session with their father. They find that the door is now locked, blocked by a chair by their devious mother, who now plans to eat the corn on one side, rice on the other little diamond shaped bits of breakfast delight. But that’s not the disturbing part. Well, it could be, but it’s not the part that bugs me the most. They do a closeup of the door and there is a DEADBOLT on the parents’ bedroom door! A deadbolt! Just what are those parents doing in there that they need a deadbolt? And then that brings up the issue of that tape. Was the tape already in the parents’ bedroom?

I mean, I’m thinking that their selfish cereal behavior is the least of their problems. I’m just saying.

I had a weird moment the other night. There was a guy at the Cute Boy Bar who looked very out of place, so I tried to describe it to Esteban, why this boy looked so out of place at the Cute Boy Bar. He had this strange bowl cut page boy on his angular fox-like face and he was wearing a cable-knit black turtleneck. I explained, “There was this sketch on Saturday Night Live, called Sprockets and Mike Myers played Dieter” And then Esteban nodded, because he vaguely remembered that Mike Myers was on Saturday Night Live. I continued “And one episode, Dieter was all excited because he was going to interview this famous film director from the Eastern Block… because, you know, the wall had just come down, so he finally could enter the free world. And they showed a clip of his movie and it was this strange black and white montage of the guy’s face, he was played by Woody Harrelson, and then a chicken and then Woody Harrelson again…. it was all very strange. And then the guy came on the show and he was ruined by all of the tackiness of the free world. Like, he had a hat with holders for beer cans, so he could drink beer from a tube. Anyway, that guy looks exactly like that character… only not ruined by the free world and stuff… you don’t know what I’m talking about, do you.”

“Uh-uh.” Esteban shook his head and then went back to his beer, uttering an oath under his breath to not marry a crazy woman next time.

And now is the time on Weetabix when we dance.

The one where I run out of things to write about

I didn’t watch the Oscars. I took one look at them, at Joan River’s emanciated little skeleton with her raspy voice and her “Look! See! I’m a human! I’ve reproduced and then my mate killed himself” daughter Melissa and I feel slightly faint, as if I had just inhaled a combination of bleach and ammonia. That’s horrible of me. I shouldn’t make fun of poor Edgar. But perhaps Joan shouldn’t have made fun of him all of those years? Hmmm?

I guess that I missed Gwyneth’s droopy uneven breasts and J.Lo looking like an extra from Peggy Sue Got Married. And Russell looking sour when he lost out to Denzel. A good sport Russell is not, but he’s very pretty so he doesn’t have to be.

Joan Rivers: Hello everyone, I’m reporting here from the red carpet at the 1st Annual Diaryland Awards. Everyone who is anyone is here. I just saw Bobby Burgess walk up the red carpet with Julia Roberts, wearing Armani and a smile. And a second ago, you can still see the back of her head up the way there, we saw Marn arrive, wearing a gorgeous ….oh… gorgeous!… Versace number in pale chartreuse.

Melissa Rivers: Mom? Mom? Have you seen UncleBob yet? They’re telling me that he’s coming your way.

Joan Rivers: Ohhh! Ohhh! UncleBob. Oh my goodness. I’m flushed! I’m flushed. I can see him now. UncleBob! Yoohoo! Oh no! He’s running away! Hey! You come back here! This is E! Entertainment, buddy!

Melissa Rivers: Mom, just let it go. They’re about to start anyway. (wishing she was the daughter of Barbara Walters and Hugh Downs)

Joan Rivers: That’s right… we’ll get him back when we crucify him for his clothing choice. Did you see that tux? Denim with the American flag embroidered on the back. Awww! (makes retching sound) Blech! But now, let’s cut over to the award show.

(Cut to the stage where a large Cirque Du Soleil act is going on and Roseanne Barr is making Tom Arnold jump through a hoop of fire. Tom’s groinal region catches fire and she laughs maniacally. Then Billy Crystal makes a joke about having one’s diary online being akin to toasting one’s nether regions and then announces that there will be no acceptance speeches in effort to keep the awards program under 5 hours. Cut to a shot of Jack Nicholson’s sardonic expression. Cut to a reaction shot of JHeaton looking amused. Then the folks from Price Waterhouse looking anal-retentive and uncomfortable. )

Throcky, presenting with Bjork: In today’s fast paced society, we look to small bite-sized bits of diaries to give us our daily fix. (Bjork does some interpretive dance and is chased around stage by a gigantic swan, but it turns out that it is really KitchenLogic) And the Andy for Best Short Shorts goes to…. Save Craig!

Pamela Anderson Lee crosses the stage with Blab who is merely oggling Ms. Anderson’s finest qualities.

Pamela: Electronic voyeurism has been around since the inception of the internet.

Blab: I wonder why they chose us to present this award, Pamela. (raises eyebrows knowingly)

Pamela: (sighs and ignores him because she is a serious actress) For Best Gratuitous Sex Scenes, the Andy goes to…. BadSnake!

Andy Warhol: And now the presentation of the Andy for best design of a diary.

Chromemm: Hey. You’re like David Bowie or some shit, right?

Andy Warhol: No. I’m not.

Chromemm: Yes you are. Don’t fuck with me. You’re David Fucking Bowie.

Andy Warhol: You are strange and off putting.

Chromemm: Listen Ziggy Stardust, bite me, ok? And the award for best design goes to Outfoxed.

Billy Bob Thornton: In times of uncertainty, it becomes…. hey… I object to this next category!

Bfee: (picking up the cue)… it becomes necessary for women to know how to kick some serious ass while still maintaining a healthy pout. The Andy for Best Usage of Angelina Jolie goes to…..Pischina!

Billy Bob Thornton: They told me I was doing the Lifetime Achievement one. This is crap! No one touch me! (storms off the stage)

DancingBrave: An online diary is nothing without a compelling narrative style.

Russell Crowe: Hey, uh, are you married, baby?

DancingBrave: Um…. no, but I have a boyfriend… and we’re not going to be bringing up marriage again for some time, ok?

Russell Crowe: That’s no matter. Want to see my muscles?

Dancing Brave: And the Andy for Best On-Screen Writing goes to….Widower!

Russell Crowe: Does this mean you don’t want to see my muscles?

Chauffi: Concept diaries abound on Diaryland, but some of them rise to the top as being truly excellent.

Tori Spelling: My dad bought me a diary once.

Chauffi: Um… that’s nice Tori. It’s your line.

Tori Spelling: Line? What? My breasts defy gravity.

Chauffi: And the Andy for Best Overall Concept goes to …Quoted!

Tori Spelling: My dad tried to buy me a spot on Quoted.

Brad Pitt: And now we have the presentation of the lifetime achievement award.

Anenigma: This next award goes to a man who has written almost 1000 entries, each one funny as hell, as well as several hilarious alternative diaries. Plus, he’s very sweet… or at least his urine is…. Uncle Bob!

UncleBob:(ripping off his Brad Pitt mask) Thank you! Thank you! I’m really honored. I’m not quite sure what I’m going to do with this award thing. I mean, it’s nice because it’s named after my kid, right, but I’m pretty sure he’s just going to swipe it and chew on it. I’ll probably put it in the garage sale, but I’m honored just the same. Thanks y’all! Peace out!

By the way, the diarists and celebrities mentioned here had nothing to do with this entry and it was all me, baby, all me. So don’t get your panties in a twist. It’s satirical. Besides, Andy Warhol is totally dead.

Weetabix proves she refuses to bow down to pressures from the man!

Man. Weird weekend.

First off, it technically started on Thursday night, right after my incredibly stupid phone maneuver threw me off kilter. I got to quilting class an hour and a half late, and immediately proceeded to kick some serious cotton covered ass. The Quilt Nazi declared my quilt ‘Perfect’. I’m done with the middle actual patchworky section now so the next two classes will be dealing with putting on a border type thingy, a back and stuffing, and then sewing the actual ‘quilted’ part of it, which I guess entails repeatedly running the sewing machine over the top in some random fashion. I’m not certain. I’m sure it will all become clear however.

Then I went to karaoke at the Cute Boy Bar. One cool thing: When I walked in wearing black slimline trousers, white t-shirt and my red croc jacket, Jason looked at me and said ‘Wow Weetabix, you look really slick.’ Which was very cool. Because Jason is usually Mr. Stoic and doesn’t offer flattery for the sake of flattery. It turned out that there was some kind of karaoke contest going on. It also turned out that Esteban showed up, feeling residual guilt for not seeing me for several days on end and grabbing one last chance to see me before I left for Milwaukee on Friday. The contest was ok, but it was based upon audience participation. Essentially, you were judged upon your ability to get the drunken people to sing along with you or the fact that you brought a large group of friends along to cheer for you. Vocal ability didn’t matter. You didn’t even really have to know the song.

My. I sound bitter now, don’t I. Need I even tell you that I didn’t win? No. I didn’t think so. I was the second person up and while I think I did an acceptable job, ‘Back on the Chain Gang’ didn’t inspire as many ‘ooh ahs’ as I had hoped. And I felt like a dork, pimping the crowd for reaction. I can’t sing with a smile on my face. I just can’t. I’m more of a serious artist, damnit! I’m not Kathy Lee Gifford! Yeah’ I’m trying to get over myself.

Sadly enough neither did Joel or Cheri, which is a terrible shame. Cheri’s probably got the best voice of any of us. She picked ‘You Oughta Know’ deviating from her normal ballads in a nod toward the ‘crowd reaction’ slant. They ended up playing some wacked out sped up dance version and she did a very good job but it was still wacked. It confused the drunken people. They didn’t know when to sing and when not to sing. I think she was sabotaged, honestly. Joel did ‘Ring Of Fire’ which he does excellently. The entire bar was singing along with him. He was skanked on the contest. Of all of us, he did probably get the best crowd reaction.

But it was still a lovely way to wrap up the week and even lovelier still that Esteban was there. At one point, though, I told him that he was cramping my boy action, because normally at least one cute boy flirts with me at the Cute Boy Bar. He was like “I’m what?” and then I just laughed at him. I like to keep him on his toes.

We went home and then in the morning, I went to lunch with all of Esteban’s friends, which was nice. Then I geared up the car and packed and toddled down to Milwaukee to hang with Mary Kaye. We ended up going out with a bunch of Angel’s cop friends, but then I got a migraine and ended up driving home that night. The whole thing was a downer.

On Saturday, I went shopping and got a massage to sooth my tired sore muscles. Then I ended up at the Prescriptives counter, where I splurged on way too much makeup. No, actually, it wasn’t too much makeup. It just cost too much. It’s really sad when $150 worth of products fit in this teeny tiny little bag. But I did get the custom blended foundation and loose powder which perfectly match my skin tone. And some wicked ‘slutty ho’ red lipstick. When I wear it, it looks as though I’ve been eating ripe strawberries in a field behind a French Provencal farmhouse while tending the sheep or something. That’s what you get for $18′ it’s not just a tube of lipstick, it’s an entire backstory. You’ve just got to love that.

While I was having my ‘color analysis’ some chick walked off with my batch of custom foundation. I couldn’t believe it. I mean, sure the stuff costs $55 an ounce, but the reason it costs so much is the fact that they make it especially for YOU. It’s Weetabix color. Not Thief Girl color. I’m completely boggled by it. But at least the lovely girls at Prescriptives whipped me up a new batch.

I also bought some more body butter. Yes. I did just buy some but the coconut was in stock now. So I bought that and a body scrub, which were on special 2 for $25. I have a feeling I’m going to start hoarding this stuff. It’s spiffy, that body butter.

Then Esteban, Markus and I went out to dinner at Applebees, because we live in a horrible awful little town and sometimes Applebees is all you’ve got. We all ended up getting steak. Despite the claims of Applebees, they do not make a very good steak. No one was clamoring to have the chef sign their stomachs. What is more, the steak I ordered did not even come with vegetables, so I ordered that on the side. I can’t deal with a veggie-free meal. Oh, ok, the ‘garlic mashed potatoes’ were theoretically vegetables, but they could have also been wallpaper paste for all I know. At least with grilled zucchini, I know where I stand.

I watched Trading Spaces (note to self: if signing up to be on Trading Spaces, do not let Hilde near your home) and had a weird moment in that I actually liked Frank’s room rather than Hilde’s. Not that I ever like Hilde’s anything, but I usually detest Frank’s kitschy crafty crap and love him for his quips and ‘I’m a completely heterosexual male’ just ask my wife’Bill.’ Also, Frank didn’t sweat like priest in a boy’s locker room. It was very surreal. I don’t know if I can handle this Kinder Gentler Classier Frank. It makes the universe all imbalanced. Next thing I know it, Vern will be painting rooms bright pink and upholstering sofas with Dalmatian prints.

And I think Ty has turned into Hilde’s bitch. I kept rolling my eyes the way he created two coffee tables for Hilde’s room without her asking. I expected him to ask Paige to find out if Hilde thought he was cute. My respect for Ty dropped. I’ve always liked him, not because he’s a fine piece of man meat, but because he’s obviously smart and clever on his own and he makes fun of the stupid people on the show.

And he knows how to handle tools. There’s something inherently sexy about that. Very evolutionary, I’m sure. I’d have been one of those cave women saying, ‘Did you see how Trog handled that rock? I mean, his brow is really sloped and his knuckles still drag on the ground, but watching him cleave that saber tooth’s skull open’. It made me’I don’t know’grooowwwwwwllll!!!’

I’d still take me some Doug in the black leather pants, even if he is a diva and swishy to boot, though. Then it would fulfill my need to be the fat funny girl sidekick.

Now I have the urge to call my mom and see if she has Prince Albert in a Can.

Oh my god. Oh my god.

Ohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygod.

I have done what is possibly the stupidest thing I’ve done in my entirety as an adult. Seriously. I can’t even believe how stupid I am.

So yesterday.

I was sitting at work, having just figured out an exceptionally hard problem that has been beating me up and calling me ‘Nancy’ all frigging week. Turns out it was Bill Gates’ fault. Yep. That rat bastard anyway. He’s given me more stress this week than any other multimillionaire corporate genius. But I digress. I was feeling all kind of beat up and pouty because I couldn’t fix the problem without rewriting Windows 2000 (Oh my god I am such a geek for even having such thoughts) and my forehead was wrinkling up in a permanent stress wrinkle, the kind I cannot even relax without serious contemplation.

So I started thinking about my father.

I’m sure your head is whipping around right now and going ‘What? Weetabix was not the product of immaculate conception?’ because I don’t really talk about him much, not here and not in life in general. Mostly because it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Essentially, he’s an asshole. We’re ‘estranged’, and have been for most of my life. I last saw him when I was 21 and I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve seen him since I was four-years-old. Every attempt I’ve made to talk to him is blocked by his wife, a trailer trash whore whom I refer to as my Wicked Step-Monster. I don’t blame her completely, although I dislike her immensely. But the man is 55-years-old’ he’s had access to a phone in the last 25 years.

So, for whatever reason, maybe because I was feeling beaten up by technology or feeling stupid or whatnot, I’m not entirely certain. I wanted to hear his voice. I just felt like saying ‘Hi, how are you doing, did you know I graduated with honors? Did you know I got married three years ago?’

And before I could really consider the stupidity of my actions, I dialed his number.

Almost immediately, the Step-Monster picked up. ‘Hello?’

I almost shit. I had forgotten that she was the only person who ever answered the phone if she was home. I really didn’t want to talk to her. So I hung up. Oh my god, I had just prank called my own father. I don’t know what I had been thinking. But at least I hadn’t done anything markedly stupid.

Phew.

Then my phone rang.

I looked at the caller id and it was their number. Oh god. Oh god oh god oh god. Luckily, they didn’t know where I worked, to my knowledge.

I panicked. I picked up the line and then hung it up.

It rang again. Their number. I swear to God it had that same ominous quality as the ringing phone in a horror movie, the phone that won’t stop ringing and you eventually find out that the killer is in the house. God she was freaking paranoid! And I could just see her all fixated, dialing long distance several times to find out who called and hung up on her.

I decided that I’d just let it ring. I wouldn’t answer it. She’d give up eventually. It rang four times and then stopped.

Then I realized.

Voice mail.

A criminal mastermind, I am not.

Anguished, I screamed ‘AAAAAAARRRGGHHH!!’ and scared the cleaning people in my office. A million thoughts ran through my mind. What if I quickly logged into my voice account and deleted the outgoing message’ the message which stated my name and department and how late I was working that day. But it was too late. The minute the phone bumped to mail, she was listening to my outgoing message. I was so busted.

I cradled my head in my hands and moaned. My stupid clueless head.

Then the message indicator started blinking like a telltale heart. I logged on quickly and got the message ‘Hello’. I don’t know who called but someone from this number called me and I don’t know no Weety Bixa so I guess I’ll try back later.’

Oh my god. She didn’t know my married name. And I had apparently slurred my name in the morning (the affects of all the fat-laden treats I had consumed, undoubtedly). While that was somewhat disturbing in itself, it meant that she wasn’t sure if the line belonged to THAT Weetabix, the spurn of her father’s loins, or some generic wrong number Weetabix.

Then my phone rang immediately again. And I knew it was because she wanted to listen to that message again. Now normal people would have just shrugged and hung up. Not the Step-Monster. And she’s such a paranoid nutjob that she’d obsessively call it a million times, long distance, to try to process it in her little hamster-in-an-exercise-wheel driven brain. And she’d probably play it for my father too. I was going to have to help her process it.

I cringed and answered the phone ‘Technical Support’

‘Who is this?’

‘This is Technical Support’

‘Yeah, but who are you?’

My brain scrambled ‘Natalie.’ (thank you, Throcky)

‘Well, Natalie, does a Weety Bixa work there?’

‘There is a Weety Bixa who works here, yes’ I’m sitting at her desk for the late shift.’

God, I hate lying. I hate it, I hate it, I hate it. I was just digging myself a deeper hole.

‘Is she married?’

‘Um’. I’m not sure’ she’s a day person’ I think so’ I THINK so.’ I had an uncertain but helpful voice for this.

‘Someone called this number and then hung up. And I called back and got that voice mail.’

I had to give her some kind of reason.

‘Oh, that might have been me. I’m sorry. I was dialing into {a corporation that is near their town} with the computer and I heard someone answer, so I dropped connection before I hurt your ears with the modem sound.’ Not that you could actually do that’ but she didn’t know that and it sounded plausible.

‘What number were you dialing?’

I quickly repeated her number, exchanging a 6 for a 3.

She cut me off’ ‘You dialed the wrong number!’

‘Yes, I see that now’ I mistyped it into the computer. I’ve got it on the screen in front of me. I’m sorry. Did I interrupt your dinner?’

‘Nah. And where are you located?’

In retrospect, I should have said a different town in my area code, but I couldn’t think that fast.

‘Green Bay.’

‘I knew it. I says to myself that had to be a Green Bay area code. I remember them things. My family is from Green Bay.’

‘Oh really? What a coincidence!’ And the Oscar goes to’

‘Yah, isn’t it though? So you were calling {name of big corporation near their town}?’

‘Yes. To download some marketing data from their computer.’ Because when you’re lying, you tend to give too much information. Here’s proof.

‘That must be why we get so many weird calls. We’s always getting weird calls.’

‘Does it sound like a computer trying to connect?’ That’s Natalie for you’ helpful as can be.

‘YEAH!’

‘Then it’s probably stores trying to call in to get their data. Not us, though, we hardly ever call.’ Shut up Natalie! Shut up!

‘Yah, that must be it then. Weird.’

‘Yes. Well’ again’ I’m very sorry about disturbing you.’

‘Yah, okay. That’s all right.’

‘Bye.’ You hell demon.

‘Yah. Bye then.’

And it was over.

Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god!

I think there must be something broken in my brain that I am compulsed to do such things. I quickly changed my voice mail to only say ‘Technical Support’. And then went into a bathroom and beat my head against the wall until it was time to leave.

I am so going to hell.

You ain’t got a thing, if you ain’t White Trash bling bling

This morning hath begun the day that diets forgot.

First off, it snowed. Not a little bit of snow, something that one could use a clever meteorological euphemism with, like “a light dusting” or “a little winter frosting”. No…. this was more like “the big dump after a night of heavy drinking and mexican food consumption”. As I stood in a 30 inch drift, knocking the snow off the Monte in the sixteen degrees above zero winter chill, I thought bitterly about the fact that thirteen days ago, I was traipsing around in shorts in Atlanta. I decided that Mother Nature hated me for exposing my fishbelly white legs and was punishing me, shouting “First day of spring??? I’ll show you first day of spring! Bwahahahaha! You might have had the decency to slap some bronzer on those winter butt white Michelin legs, huh?” And then she put on her game face and set out to kick my spring loving ass.

Because it’s all about me, you know.

So I finally made it out onto our street (still unplowed) and then eased out onto the main drag, which was a sheen of ice. My wheels were spinning and I was creeping at three miles an hour. I decided to forego Starbucks, because we have a morning meeting which starts ten minutes before 8 o’clock and I was nervous about traffic. Stupidly, I decided that it would be safer on the highway than through town (and this might have actually been the case, as the roads were all ice but at least we didn’t have to stop on the highway). I passed no fewer than six cars spun out in the ditch, many of them facing the wrong direction from whence they had come. “Whence”… Nothing like a little black ice to bring out the Middle English in me, apparently.

Highway travel was a sensible 30 miles an hour over the black ice (which is road that looks dry but your wheels are spinning if you apply more than the tiniest bit of gas and you’ll kill yourself if you try to stop), fifteen miles per hour when passing cars which had spun out so that we could all point and laugh at the people in the ditch. I made it across town but then was bereft without my morning cup of mocha. Instead I opted for fast food and then was seduced by their sexy breakfast menu. I’m a sucker for eggs, cheese and ham.

I got into work right at 8:00 and everyone was late, so I didn’t feel so bad. And because we celebrate Thursdays at my office with various treats (as well as any day ending in “Y”), there were some baked goods and two bags of KitKats. Oh dear. My kryptonite. Sitting nary three feet from my desk no less. I only had one…normal size candy bars worth of mini Kit Kats. The shame.

And a very tiny piece of the homemade baked goods. Because my drunken mama raised me not to be rude and I didn’t want to hurt the girl’s feelings.

And then I found out that it was Nacho Day, which is a charity event where my department, along with a few others, cooks up this huge nacho feast for $3 a plate. With a dessert.

I did put fat free sour cream on the nachos. And only ate half of the gargantuan helping.

Of course, I ate the lemon square. Because I didn’t want to be rude. You know, this is exactly how fat polite girls happen. And it totally explains the term “skinny bitch” as well.

So at 1:00 I declared that I was eating healthy from that point forward. And then proceeded to assuage my guilt with a bag of caramel corn rice cakes. And water.

And then my lunch hour came and I spent it getting a manicure from a 21 year old twig who had just finished throwing up her lunch in the bathroom. “I’ve been sick” she said as she popped a Tic Tac, then excused herself to purge again.

She gave me a lovely French manicure and I feel all white trash now. People keep asking me if I have a special event to go to this weekend. I’ve been resisting the urge to answer “My baby’s daddy’s getting out of prison!” It made me wish that I hadn’t worn the houndstooth blazer with leather accents but rather wore my red croc pleather jacket. I wish I could talk all bling bling like Pink. When she comes up, you better get dis party started. To offset the slow deterioration of my life, I put in James Taylor. It is literally impossible to be stupid when listening to James Taylor. It makes me like a 50 year old history professor with a timeshare in the Vineyard and a wine cellar in the basement. It makes me want to eat whole grains and raw foods and watch PBS while weaving a hemp hammock.

James Taylor is my Anti-White Trash.

Tonight, I have more Quilt Nazi. I’m going to be late because I have to work until 7:00, so I’m sure this will incite her ire. I’ll likely have to sew 50 straight seams in penance, but there’s no way to get around it as I could talk not a single member of my team to sub for me. I even broke out the bribes of homemade cookies. I knew I should have offered oral sex, but honestly, the Quilt Nazi just isn’t worth it.

Afterwards, we’re going to the cute boy bar to sing karaoke with Joel, Cheri and the gang. Or at least Jason. I have no idea. But I do know this… I’ll be fluffing up my hair and shedding my houndstooth blazer for my croc jacket, so my nails should fit right in.

Rhymes with witch

Oh my good lord.

I almost took it to the ring with Esteban’s grandma Gen.

The same woman whose own son Ward chose going to Vietnam rather than spending another moment with. I mean, can you imagine ‘Hmmm’. People trying to shoot me’ or life with Mother’ easy pick.’

I can hardly blame him. The woman is evil, I tell you. EVIL!

Here’s the backstory:

Last year, during the Mother’s Day brunch, I got stuck sitting next to her, so I told her about how Esteban and I were researching his family tree. She got all huffy and essentially told me that I was wasting my time because someone already did all that’ well, her side anyway, and that was the good side and the only one that mattered, and published it in a book. She offered to let me borrow it, to enter into my genealogy program. I said, sure, and then the next morning, she called me and asked when I was going to come and get the book. I distinctly remembered rolling my eyes and then deciding that if I didn’t come and get it right that second when I had time, she’d be hounding me and then get all insulted that I hadn’t picked it up immediately. So I did. And when she dug out that book and handed it to me, I kid you not, there was a quarter inch of dust on it.

So that was last May. I entered some of the stuff’ the book is the size of a phone book. And basically picked it up whenever I had a free moment. You know, because I have such an empty life with nothing to do. Christ. I don’t even have enough time to shop for a maid to clean my house.

Right after Christmas, she decided she wanted it back.

Right that minute.

She called Esteban and asked him to bring it over to her the next time he visited. She called our house at 7:15 a.m. on a Saturday morning and asked me to bring it to her the next time I went to her house (not bloody often, by the way). She called Ward and asked HIM to get the book.

And it’s probably our fault. I mean, it wasn’t that high of a priority. It’s a genealogy book, not an expose on Wayne Newton’s sex life, not a recipe for Red Lobster’s Cheese Biscuits, not the secret of life itself. A book about dead people. That’s all. Not even an especially GOOD book on dead people. Just spiral bound and mimeographed, not all leatherbound and gold leafed with a picture of the Mayflower on it or something. And she’s had the thing since 1986 and NEVER READ IT.

And apparently, the week that we were gone to Atlanta incensed her to no end. I think she pictured us throwing her photocopied sheets of ancestors around where there might be black people or some such.

So last night, I was sitting at home, checking my email at 8:30, having just worked 11 hours and then got home to find a GD repeat of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, albeit a good repeat. And I get this phone call.

‘Weetabix? I want the book now.’

‘Book?’

‘You’ve got my book. I want it back.’

Then I realized that it was Gen.

‘Oh, hi Gen, yeah, I thought Esteban was going to bring it to you this week, but I see it’s sitting here on the desk’ I can bring it to you on Friday when I have off.’

‘See here you’. I’ve been waiting for that book for a very long time and I’ve heard that line before.’

‘I understand, Gen, and I’m sorry.’

‘I want the book.’ Her voice was rising, getting higher into this hateful whine.

‘Well, I’m working 11 hour days right now and Esteban is going to work at 8:00 and coming home after 11 pm so I don’t think he can bring it to you tomorrow either.’ I don’t even know why but she was really ticking me off immediately. Probably her tone of voice, which was so scornful and nasty.

‘I don’t think you should be blaming Esteban for this, see here, because I didn’t borrow it to Esteban, I borrowed it to you. And you’ve had it almost a year. It doesn’t take a year to read.’

‘Yes, Gen, I understand that. And if you remember, I wasn’t reading the book, I was typing it into the computer, into our genealogy program.’

‘Yeah, well, I don’t know about that.’ As if I were making it up! ‘I just want my book back from you people.’

We’re ‘you people’ now.

‘I explained to you that I can bring it to you on Friday.’

‘Yeah, well, I’ve been hearing this ‘I’ll bring it over to you’ for a year now and I still don’t have my book!’

‘As I explained, we are both working very long days right now. I cannot leave work to drive across town to bring your book to you and I can’t get into your building past 8:00 pm. If Esteban is not able to bring it to you by Friday, I will bring it to you on my day off. Ok?’

‘Well’. I guess it will have to do.’

AAAAHHHHHHHH!!!

And have I mentioned that the woman is evil? Please don’t get me wrong. I adore senior citizens. I love them. I love their demeanor and their personalities. I love their stories. But she’s different. She’s not a normal grandmotherly type. And Esteban’s paternal side of the family is messed up. When they lived in Minneapolis, Esteban and I went to visit them and they brought us to the Maul of America (TM Kitchenlogic). We walked for 8 straight hours, with one half hour stop for lunch at a place called Gators, where they served alligator. Gen, Esteban and I all ate gator. That night, when Esteban and I, at ages 22 and 23 respectively, collapsed from exertion, she called us ‘A bunch of pansies’. Then Esteban and I got horrible intestinal cramps from the alligator. She didn’t. The seventy-plus year old woman was fine. I think that says something right there. Either she’s got a cast iron stomach or possibly she is a minion of Satan. I’m leaning toward the latter. I was a vegetarian during some of that time and every time we visited, she insisted that we eat at this restaurant that served exactly two items’ hamburgers and French fries. And her own grandson, Esteban’s cousin, was a vegetarian too! But she had a coupon, you see.

A different time, Esteban had taken her out for breakfast at an establishment frequented by senior citizens. They were walking out of the restaurant and were waiting for an elderly lady who was walking with a walker, with some difficulty. She was blocking the door and Gen was impatiently tapping her foot waiting. Finally, she clears her throat and taps the woman on the shoulder and shouts ‘See here you’ get along now!’ Esteban was appalled and said ‘Grandma!’ and Gen retorted, ‘Aw, I’m as old as she is and you don’t see me blocking the way!’

She’s evil.

So this morning, I put the book on Esteban’s coat and asked him to take it to her if he had time. He gave me a sideways look and growled. I explained that I would do it on Friday, but I’d rather not speak to her right then. So he did it. Because he’s a wonderful person and he knows how evil his grandmother is.

And she tried to give the book back to him.

AAAHHHHHHHH!

Apparently, she felt bad about going postal on me. Esteban wouldn’t take it back. Which was good, because otherwise I’d have to remove delicate parts of his anatomy.

She makes Mafia Grandma seem loving and warm. I think I’m calling in sick on Easter.

Fusu in Japanese means “shit”

I adore sushi.

I adore the way that it’s so neatly packaged. I adore the the colors. I know I’ve written an entire entry about how much I love sushi, but I felt it needed to be reiterated.

I have California roll for lunch today and I’m eating it with my fingers. So much for it being dainty food. I’d roll around in it naked, but I’ve heard that wasabi burns like a bitch.

Every time I hear the words “Operation Anaconda” I want to shout “My anaconda don’t want none if you ain’t got buns hon!” at the top of my lungs. I’m certain that whomever named that strategic maneuver didn’t really consider the “Baby’s Got Back” implications. Or maybe they did. I’ve heard that the Taliban women are a little flat and boy-like. Maybe it’s a whole other agenda. It’s about freedom for the curvy round sex goddess.

It’s a whole new world, baby.

After I reset a user’s password today, he said “Ok, thanks babe.”

Babe.

I’m a technical babe.

I am so stunned by that I have nothing else to say. Thus I will render the rest of my entry in the lovely Japanese poetry form of haiku, in honor of my sushi lunch.

Oh man, nothing wakes you faster than the scraping off of layers of your skin. Although, I do have to admit… my bod is soft and supple like a well-pounded baseball glove. Or something.

This morning was essentially fraught with disaster as I attempted to make myself presentable to the world. First the entire Karen Silkwood scrubbing that left me quivering from dermabrasive shock. Then I realized that the volumizing hair gel I had purchased was actually CONDITIONER. Therefore, I have the hair of Chuck Woolery today. Not in a good way, either. What is more, I believe my Lanc’me eye base stuff is giving me some kind of eyelid cancer. I have a zit on my eyelid and boy does that mofo hurt every time I blink. You’d be amazed how often you blink in a given day.

Then I went down to the basement to get a clean shirt to wear. I had done laundry yesterday and realized that I never actually do laundry, but rather I do the “fucking laundry”. It’s “the fucking laundry” in my head. Anyway, I never actually put anything in our very cutting edge Maytag dryer, but rather I dry everything on hangers on two lines in the basement. It keeps my clothes much nicer and they don’t shrink. Well, apparently, I misjudged the amount of time it takes a shirt to dry as the shirt I wanted to wear was slightly damp. I figured, no big, it was only damp on the bottom. I put it on and proceeded to shiver and be clammy for the rest of the morning. The walk up from peasant parking was a treat as well, in the 30 degree wind.

Last night, I ended up eating this concoction that is called Sandwich Spread. I don’t know if this is a universal product or some bizarre Wisconsin thing, but it is this pink meat spread stuff that you schmear on buttered white bread. I believe it is made with ground bologna, pickle relish, Miracle Whip (NOT mayonnaise) and maybe even soylent green… I’m not sure. It’s bland and you don’t have to chew too much and it’s basically all round disgusting.

Yet, it is a comfort food of mine. It reminds me of languid summers spent at my great grandmother’s metal kitchen table, overlooking her white picket fenced yard full of maple trees, the sounds of cicadas in the distance, coolness emanating from her screened patio. She’d serve us a cold lunch of pickles, pickled beets, cottage cheese, canned pineapple chunks, ice cold glasses of white milk, and sandwiches with that sandwich spread stuff. Thus, every three months, I get a craving for the stuff. I have a hard time finding a deli with adequate spread. If they use mayo, it’s right out. Likewise, if there are chunks of onion in it… blech. Thus, last night, I had a sandwich with that stuff on it guiltily, because I hate myself the entire time I’m eating it. The thought of all that junk. Bologna of all things. I don’t eat bologna… haven’t since I was 12 years old… but I’ll eat this stuff, as though the fact that it is ground up makes it acceptable. I also drank some ice cold skim milk which tasted very excellent. Didn’t touch the pickled beets, though. I would probably be in a sodium coma if I had.

Thus I’m viewing the sugar rub as a penance for the nutritional misdeeds of the previous night. Sort of a hair shirt that has the additional benefit of beautiful skin. Or maybe that’s the wet shirt I’m wearing.

I also watched what is possible the Best Episode of Trading Spaces Ever. It was in LA and Paige was wearing some kind of feathered shirt and it had Doug on it, wearing black leather pants and a tight short sleeved shirt that showed his ‘ceps. That man is so grrrrrrrrrrrrrowlll, even if he did allow Target to sponsor his room. And Ty Pennington was there. What is more, one of the men was cracking my shit up. He made me laugh out loud no less than four times, razzing on Paige, making fun of Doug, the Learning Channel. At one point, when Ty was whining about having too much to do, he offered to phone up Amy Wynn. I loved me some Team Blue. What is more, Genevieve painted their wood floor black and I have to say that I agreed with her. Although, it should have probably been refinished, but they didn’t have time. They were going to have to refinish it anyway and the room did look sawheet. What is more, the Team Blue Guy said “Fuck me!” when he saw the room and then was all embarrassed that he cursed on television. And even in L.A., Gen still managed to be weird, wearing an inexplicable sock on her hand at one point. I missed the beginning of it.. I’d like to see that one again.

It made me giddy, though, as it just points out how excellent Trading Spaces could be, it’s bittersweet really.
