Two weasels, a duck and an itty bitty baby

Kim V brought her child to see me at work today. Her child is four weeks old, but technically, should only be like two days old because he was a little early. This makes him very adorable, tiny and wrinkly, much like a delicate Faberge egg which needs ironing. Oh, I know that one mustn’t iron Faberge eggs. Or babies either, for that matter. Stop looking at me like that, silly.

And the child had the audacity to be sweet and quiet and sleep within my arms like a gentle smelling bundle of wonder. My uterus contracted with the beat of my biological clock. Why could he not have been screaming? Why wasn’t he demanding my car keys or he’d pop a cap in my ass? No. Instead, someone had to remove his socks so he could hypnotize me with his adorable toes. Those babies…. they look all innocent, but they’ve got this whole agenda to propagate the species.

Afterward, I actually listened to a discussion with two women about their various labor, adding information about Mo’s labor so I could participate, as I have no labor stories of my own. Oh, I could have told them about dislocating my shoulder, or perhaps my furious blood poisoning incident, but it really didn’t qualify. Not when talking to people who’ve had other human beings inside their bodies.

I now have this incredible urge to organize a bake sale and sew a ladybug costume, grumbling about how I’m not the only person who lives in this house and shouldn’t be the only one who picks things up. So… essentially, the only thing that would be different would be the bake sale.

Dang, that was a cute baby though.

I think I shall embark upon a craft project. I have a hankering to make some more cards, mostly for the sole reason that I have been a bad Weetabix and have yet to send out the prizes to the winners of the Weetabix Quiz, thus, I will make them each a card as penance.

Oh, and I further tore apart the house, looking for that damn weasel poem. I found an enormous cache of writing, another notebook which mostly had stuff from a Psychology and Counseling class, about 82 copies of a couple of poems, and the scribbled upon workshop copies that I had mentioned yesterday. And no weasel poem.

Need I even tell you that the weasel poem has gotten better in my mind. That mofo is an award winner now. I’m taking this loss as though I’d just seen a Van Gogh go up in flames. Even though I remember that my advisor, the state’s poet laureate, told me it wasn’t my best work, in my mind, this thing is up there with Allan Ginsberg’s “Howl”.

Esteban put up with my pouting with much patience but finally he said “You know, you could probably write a much better poem now…. you’re a better writer now.” which had the lovey quality of not only putting it into perspective but also gently reminding me that I do know how to actually write as well. You’ve just got to love it when someone says exactly what you need to hear.

I’d still really like to reread that poem. I almost but not quite remember how it went and it’s bugging the crap out of me.

“Go on! Move! Move duckie! Waddle you bitch! Waddle!!!”

Me, this morning, yelling at a duck which was standing in the middle of the road

Now I’ve got the Quack Quack Waddle Waddle song from that old McDonald’s commercial stuck in my head.

And you know what I would like to know? Why don’t the Spice Girls tell us what they want, what they really really want? Because wondering is keeping me up at nights.

And “zigga zig ah” is not the answer of a sane person.

Psychic Friends have nothing on me

I’ve spent the last three days searching for former professors of mine. I need their recommendations to apply to a PHD program in English because I can’t just take a night writing workshop, I have to be in the program. But I think they’ve fallen off the face of the planet. One has apparently written a book from the astral plane, as I can find evidence of her book out there, but no evidence of her actual person. I’ve thought of writing to her publisher but at that point, I just think I’ve put too much effort into it entirely and there must be another person I could find who has letters after their name to write me a goddamned recommendation to take a night writing class.

Grrrr.

That’s my trauma today.

When I was in seventh grade, I became obsessed with sex. Not obsessed in a pubescent boy kind of way, in that I wanted to be actually having the sex. I just had an almost scientific curiosity about it. Like Jane Goodall, observing the chimps. I’d wonder about anything having to do with sex. Smells, sounds, reactions, length of occurrence, anything measurable.

I’d sit in classes and watch my male teachers, watch their fingers, think about what I had heard, that finger size was somehow indicative of penis size. I’d dare contemplations, wondering not if my classmates were having the sex, but if the pharmacist at the corner drug was having the sex. I was certain that the pharmacist was schtupping the cashier. I got a serious sex vibe every time I walked into the pharmacy. Perhaps I felt that with the presence of all of those condoms, beckoning gently with their pictures of couples, walking hand in hand, on golden beaches during the sunset, not to mention Playboys and Penthouses, sealed in plastic but always surreptitiously sliced on the top for closer examination, made for an irresistible environment for the hot and heavy sex. And green Skittles, which were said to have mystical Spanish fly properties. No, not the green M&M thing, that was just a myth. It had to be a green Skittle. Plus, the pharmacist always skeeved me out.

Then, a strange thing happened…

I remember distinctly sitting in the band room. I had just placed my books under my chair and was reaching down for my flute case when suddenly I had a strange moment of second sight. Valerie Bertonelli and Eddie Van Halen were having sex at that moment. Even though it was 10:32 on a Tuesday morning, I knew that Eddie was having the hot sex with Barbara from “One Day At A Time”.

I do not know what mystical presence decided that I should bear witness to the Van Halens sexual habits. I do not know why Eddie and Valerie were the lucky couple. Why not Alex? Why not the effervescent David Lee Roth? Perhaps the Powers That Be felt that any second sight of David Lee Roth’s sexual antics would have been too much for me to bear and I would have become the world’s first Lutheran nun. I dare not question the Fates. I only know that at that moment, they were doing the deed.

I continued, for about two weeks, to be very in-tuned with their sexual habits. They had sex 8 times. Once was while I was sleeping and I knew that the deed had gone down upon waking in the morning. Once was while I was watching Putting On The Hits.

Then one day I got a psychic flash of Eddie eating some Fruity Pebbles, dry out of the box, his feet slapping on the cold tile floor, crunching some errant Pebbles betwixt his toes. And then I was done. No further visions were to come. Not of the hot sex. Not of any other rock stars. Nothing.

I didn’t even really like Van Halen, nor Valerie Bertonelli. I was sitting quite happily in the Thriller camp, humming the soundtrack from Footloose.

It is still, to this day, a mystery. Maybe if it hadn’t stopped, I could be another Miss Cleo. Although I could only tell you who was having the sex and who wasn’t. Actually, that’s really not worth paying $3.99 a minute.

But… I stopped being obsessed with sex. Well. Mostly. And I stopped going to that corner pharmacy.

That had nothing to do with finding my former professors or getting into that program. I just felt like sharing that.

After my entry yesterday, I remembered that I had written a poem about being a weasel and I went in search of it, through Computer Room #1, #2, and #3. I finally found my three undergrad writing notebooks, an angst-filled love letter from Esteban circa 1990, and an atrociously bad short story I wrote, circa 1989, which made me doubt the value in paying for more education in this art. I did not, however, find the weasel poem. I think the weasel poem was a victim of a spectacularly bad hard drive crash sometime during my junior year, in which Esteban had not backed up my writing drive and I lost everything that wasn’t on hard copy. I seem to remember a folder, somewhere, which contained some scribbled upon workshop copies of some poems, but that is my only hope that my spectacular weasel poem was not surrendered to the void.

I’m still miffed about the recommendations. I’ll bet if I had that weasel poem, I wouldn’t even need recommendations. They’d just take one look at the weasel poem…. ok, probably not.

Tales of Weasels and Fortune Cookies

Today is wimpy and gross outside. What is more, I had to use LIGHTS this morning when I was getting ready. LIGHTS!!! Wasn’t that the point of Daylight Saving (note: no S, per Eloi)? To have more light?

The thing about that cruddy spring DST jump is that I don’t just lose that hour once. I lose it like five times. Instead of my day being 24 hours, it feels like I just get up and it’s time to go to bed. Esteban says that I sleep better on the DST schedule, but I tend to think that it has more to do with the general amount of daylight itself rather than the clock schedule. I do know one thing, I detest walking up in the dark. It makes me feel like a mushroom. No. A mole. Or possibly Thumbelina, married to Mr. Mole.

It did give me a different perspective on things, though. This morning, driving to work during my normal time, which was actually an hour earlier than normal, it’s a different look at the world. There was a delicious morning mist, half obscuring the not-yet budding trees. When I take the freeway, there is a little river I cross, a river with bends and turns and egrets and cranes, trees bending their slender arms over the water, and I can rarely resist taking my eyes off the road to view this little patch of wild. It was breathtaking today. Morning is sometimes obscured by these masks of clocks and schedules and I feel very fortunate when I get a glimpse of a lovely sight like that. Even if it is through half-lidded bleary eyes and grumbling curses.

But it all means that spring is upon us, which is lovely even if it presages cruddy drippy weather. The proof is in the follicular changes of my husband’s face. Esteban made the leap from ‘winter beard’ to ‘summer beard’. But before he can do a complete summer beard, he shaves it fully. And looks like he’s twelve. He goes from being masculine and virile to having the face of a paperboy. I half expect his voice to crack. I’m one of those rare women who actually prefer facial hair on a man if it works better with their face. Some men have beard faces. And some have goatee faces. Tom Selleck has a perfect mustache face. I’m not crazy about mustaches, but on Tom, it works. So be it. So now I’m dealing with my husband, Skippy, and his baby face complete with rarely seen chin. But I like rubbing my face on his cleanly shaven face and not getting Do-It-Yourself Dermabrasion. Luckily for him, I think he’s cute no matter what. And I adore his butt.

And how’s this for a non-segue…

The previous mole comment, combined with the Night Monkey clips on Jackass last night, reminds me of a play I was in when I was a senior in high school. It was a college play and I was quite honored to be included in the cast as a high school student. I had auditioned for the part of Mr. Toad, but that went to a senior drama major whose name I’ve since forgotten.

I was a Weasel. I had no actual lines, but rather improvised furious snarls, tweets and other weasel-like noises. My costume was head to toe brown shag fur and I had an enormous weasel head with red battery-operated glowing eyes, made from Christmas lights, ping pong balls painted black and two AA batteries which I had to connect before and after every performance, lest they run out before the end of the run. Not only did it introduce me to the world of artsy-fartsy liberal arts thingies, but it also scored me an entire excused week out of school, as we had thrice-daily performances for the various grade schools in town.

Also, during the course of that play, I was involved in three other plays and it gave me my first taste of being a Type A personality. I’d write my own production during the day in classes, then do my high school play rehearsals after school (I played Sweet Pea Meadowbrook in a rather disgusting play called “Death By Chocolate”, picked to take advantage of the drama production’s curvy round sex goddess in training, but I’m not going there in this entry). I was also a primary in a community children’s theatre production, thus I had those practices on Saturday afternoons. And practice for Wind in the Willows at night. Oh lord. It was glorious. I was never home. I was sorely depressed when January came around and all of the lovely performances were complete. That’s when I turned to recreational pharmaceuticals and started wearing lots of dark blue eye shadow and a black jersey dress, knotted at the thigh, over white lace bottomed leggings and blue All Stars. My Ny-Quil habit was sacrosanct and I was seriously baselining Mountain Dew during the day, not to mention Reeses Peanut Butter Cups. Hey. I was a pretty good kid, even though I was Goth before it was cool, or at least before anyone in Green Bay had ever heard the term Goth.

That wasn’t necessarily a funny story. It just was what it was. They’re not all funny. Perhaps I just think every teenager should get the chance to be a weasel. Or maybe that I shouldn’t have had my weaselness taken from me. I don’t know. Blame it on the GD DST.

I had another Frosty lunch. Bleary drizzly weather deserves Frostys. Seriously. I read that in a fortune cookie or something.

Does anyone else keep fortune cookie slips? I will not eat a fortune cookie because my drunken mother worked at the town’s only Chinese restaurant (at the time) and used to bring home shopping bags full of fortune cookies for our cookie jar. This was a rather slight benefit. I was 18 before I realized that Chinese food was not meant to be eaten cold out of white containers directly from the refrigerator in the morning. Thus, I will only rarely eat a fortune cookie, because I’ve had too many white trash meals consisting of fortune cookies and Banquet beef pot pies. Or sometimes just fortune cookies.

If I’m at a business lunch, I’ll sometimes take a cookie under pressure of my dining companion and crack it open to see the fortune, leaving the remains of the cookie there, defeated like a crushed beetle carapace. I have one such fortune on the top of my monitor, sort of ironic for one who hates them so very much.

Your wish to reach the
top will be granted

You’ve just got to love a fortune cookie like that.

Of course, in my head I like to add the words ‘in bed’ to the end of it. And that just makes me giggle.

Because sometimes it’s good to be eight years old.

Decision?…. You’re soaking in it.

I have this incredible urge today to respond to everything anyone says to me with “This is what I’m saying!” But I’m resisting this urge because I know that once I succumb to that temptation, soon I will be Bob Doling and referring to myself in third person. And Weetabix doesn’t like that.

(sigh)

I made the rather grave mistake of driving through McDonald’s this morning at 10:30 a.m. This is when they are supposed to make the transition from breakfast to lunch. I know this now. So I politely asked if they were serving the lunch menu yet. “No!” Came the response from the box. Then I asked when lunch would be served, looking at the clock on my car stereo, which read 10:32 a.m. “In about 4 minutes.” Came the response. “Well, can I just order and then wait for four minutes?” “No!” Came the response. “Hoookay.” I replied, and then drove away. Bastards. Did somebody say… cranky??? I apparently deserve a break today… but when they damn well feel like it.

I wish I wasn’t McDonald’s bitch. You just know I’ll be back there. I have an illness, I think. They own me, with their delectable Diet Coke and crack cocaine coated french fries. And they’re toying with me with those new chicken strips. I’ve ceased eating chicken products from McDonald’s since the Chicken Head incident, but now perhaps these chicken strips are better? I just know that I’m going to get sucked into trying them.

The first step is admitting that there is a problem. They should do an After School special on this. Seriously. I would not be surprised if behind Ronald McDonald’s makeup, there hides the red burnt face of Satan himself. Or possibly Ross Perot.

Esteban and I had another stinking giggle night last night. The kind of night when I actually had to get up out of bed and leave the bedroom because he was laughing so hard, cackling like a clown, and it was making me laugh too and I knew that if I didn’t break the cycle of insanity, we’d be laughing until the break of dawn. But one of the things we discussed was that I had a convo with Ward about the flooring options for the kitchen and hallway. You see, we can’t really decide what to do. We were thinking of Pergo but we were worried about installation. And we’ve got a bedroom which used to contain Esteban’s computer room but now contains the World’s Ugliest Recliner as well as 42 miles of coaxial cable and a utility table which is bolted to the floor to be stable enough to hold Garganto Monitor. And my lunchbox collection. I’m not entirely blameless there either. You can read about the whole sordid history of that room here. Essentially, it is supposed to be my little writing room and place to be messy, but it has no floor (we ripped out the blue shag carpeting and then sealed the subfloor) 1965 paneling and stained yellow ceiling tiles, whereas I would like some crisp white walls and real ceilings. And possibly a view of the Thames. But I’m not picky. Thus, I had discussed with Ward the possibility of ripping out the paneling and the ceiling tiles and replacing with dry wall BEFORE we put in a good floor of some kind. The theory here is that we could attempt the laminate floor in a relatively square and normal room before trying to install it in the kitchen, with its addition, strange angles and then wrapping it up through the hallway.

Esteban’s family has something skewed in their wiring. The way I envision: I think aloud, trying out concepts, formulating a plan of attack, talking about various ideas and their consequences. Usually, at this point, I haven’t even made a decision upon whether or not to make a decision at this point. It’s slow and turtlelike, I know. Usually, at the end of the envisioning period, I’ve made a decision that whatever it is decision-worthy. Then I usually expect some time for marinating, time for additional information gathering as well as troubleshooting. Then there is generally some metaphorical pistol shot off to mark the actual decision to act. That’s how I work. It’s a good way to be, I think. I’m a marinater.

Esteban’s family, on the other hand, begins to attack plans in the same way. Only they have a faux marination time. They SEEM like they’re marinating, but they are not really marinating. Not only have they decided to make a decision, at one point, they all decide that the plan has been made and set into concrete. I’m a bit mystified by this, actually. I think it’s like that phenomenon you see with flocks of birds, how they all decide to take off at one time. There must be some cue that I’m missing. Perhaps its chemical based, a pheromone that prevents one from being passive aggressive.

I’ve noticed this before, for instance when planning our wedding. For instance, I was discussing the possibility of flower girls at the wedding, and June had asked who I would have as a flower girl, and I said “Oh, there are quite a few little girls I could ask” and named, as an example, one of Esteban’s second cousins, as well as my cousin, Malnourished. Later, far into the wedding planning, June asked me when I was going to ask the little girl to be in the wedding. Because, to her, it was a done deal. It’s a dangerous thing, this miswiring.

Anyway, now Ward has told Esteban of “our” plans to do the massive overhaul on this bedroom and Esteban was a little shocked. As was I. But I’m going with it. Eventually, everything in our house will be unfinished and then my little impulse to live amidst dysfunction will finally be sated.

And perhaps I’m the one who is misfiring here. I fully acknowledge that I’m passive aggressive as all get out. It takes me two months to decide to make a large purchase. It has to haunt me for a bit. I second judge everything. Mostly because I hate regret. I hate to think I’ve done something stupid. I’m not one to dive right in. I may outwardly seem impulsive, but it is all carefully planned spontaneity.

I like to think that it’s all part of my charm.

Esteban has declared that I am not to go shopping tomorrow. He then thrust an accusation upon me that I have spent the last several Saturdays in a row in spontaneous shopping excursions. Like last Saturday. About to take that accusation meekly, I suddenly remembered that I had spent last Saturday scrubbing the black rot out of our tub, as well as kicking ass on various other areas of calamity in our humble home. Not that you could tell. I have to give him that. But there are now lovely nests of precision-folded socks in our drawers and we have a wealth of clean underwear. These things do not happen by magic! There is no lovely laundry fairy who trollops through our home, gracing our drawers with fragrant bundles which smell distinctly like the green Downy stuff. Well, maybe there is… and she’s curvy and round and generally sings songs from Evita while she goes about her merry little way.

But I’m kind of flummoxed by this “No Shopping” decree. You see, I’ve kind of had the hankering to go on another search for items for my retro kitchen (you know, the one without a floor) and now this Stop Action is bugging me. And I’m running out of Body Butter again. I’m becoming a serious Body Butter heathen. I love the coconut stuff, even though I smell like a stripper.

True story: when I used to work for a bank as a teller, the strippers would come in with wads upon wads of one dollar bills, all crumpled up by what I imagined were sweaty old man hands. The bills smelled like smoke, which was not so out of the ordinary, because I dealt with a lot of tavern owners as well, but they also were greasy and smelled like coconut oil (the dollar bills, not the tavern owners) Apparently, suntan oil gives better glisten than boring old baby oil. Thus, I always attribute that smell to strippers.

So now I just have this urge to do a pole dance or shake my bootay.

This is what I’m saying.

Poetica “Tuppergirls”

It’s the March Poetica Assignment.

Yeah, it’s April. But the March assignment wasn’t posted until March had long started. And sue me. I have pneumonia.

No. It’s not a poem, really more of a short short story. But it’s on the topic. And it’s supposed to be creative. And did I mention that I have pneumonia?

Tuppergirls

Ok, so I’m at work and we’re talking about Tupperware, ok? And Susie, who is in my opinion just a complete little bitch, says that she’s got all this stuff right, like everything in the book plus all the hostess options. And I simply can’t believe it, so I go ‘No way’ and she goes ‘Way’ and I’m all ‘Whatever’ and she’s like ‘Bitch’ and so on. So I’m all for Tupperware now, right? I go and call my Tupperware lady and say ‘You’ve got to get, like, right down here because I need some stuff.’ And she is all, ‘Well, let’s book a party’ and I’m like ‘Listen, if you get your fat ass down here right now, I’m going to buy more stuff than any party, ok?’ and so she does. She hands me the book, and I’m all about ‘I’ll take it’ and she can’t believe that I want every fucking thing in the book, right? And I say, ‘Believe me, I want it.’ So two weeks later, all my shit comes and I am, just, like, so happy. I go to the grocery store and I’ve got all these A Place For Seals and the gravy thing and everything and I want to buy the right food to go with each thing. I want to bring this to work for lunch. So I go to the store, right, and I’m looking at the hot dogs, right, and I don’t even like hot dogs, because do you know what they put in them? Cow lips and assholes. But I got the hotdog Keeper, right so I need to put something in it? Anyway, who do I see, but Miss Bitch and she’s got her fucking Tupperware right there in the cereal aisle and she’s putting her cereal right inside! I couldn’t believe it. So right away, she’s all, ‘See, I told you I’ve got more Tupperware.’ So I casually pull out my Midget pill case and take an aspirin as if ‘Man, you give me such a headache’ which wasn’t even a joke, because she totally did. And then later at work, she tells Shauna that she’s got like 85 things of Tupperware. Of course, Shauna tells me this and I say, ‘It must be all that Rubbermaid shit’ and she’s like ‘No, she said it’s Tupperware’ and this pisses me off right away because Shauna’s my best friend at work and now Miss Bitch has even got Shauna on her side. So I right away go and try to buy some more, and my Tupperware lady thanks me so much, like she can’t even believe that I wasn’t calling her to return all my stuff and I go, ‘Return it? I want more!’ So she says, ‘Well, there’s some stuff that only dealers can get, if you want to be a dealer,’ and then she starts right away on some mini-van that they give you and trips and all this crap and I’m just like ‘Whatever, just get me the stuff’ and so she does. When it comes, I’m like so excited! I made up some special dip and bought some nice chips and put them out near the copy machine at work for everyone to try, and of course, the dips and chips were in my ‘Dealer Only’ bowl and Dip MicroSteamer that I got since I’m a dealer, right. Well, right away, Miss Bitch can smell my fucking food, and she goes and hoovers up everything and then says, ‘Oh, you finally got these? Gawd, I’ve had them for ages.’ And that’s the last straw! I can’t even believe that she had them! So now I’m like fixated on her, right. Like what the heck is she DOING with all of it? I have everything in my house organized and I still have boxes I haven’t even opened. I even threw away my nice blue leather purse and use my StorezALot instead! I have, like, fucking everything that can be stored in Tupperware. Anyway, it wasn’t that hard to break into her house. She’s such an idiot that she’s got this dog door, and it’s big enough for me to squeeze through. She probably never thought about it though, since she’d never fit through it, with her big ass. Anyway, I couldn’t believe it! She really DID have everything. The ThePlaceForBathroom Tissue, a special toothpaste dispenser, just everything. Things I’ve never seen. And every color too. Colors I didn’t even know they made. It wasn’t so much that she had so many incredible pieces, but that she used them for everything. She kept her earrings in the ice cube tray. She kept her rubbers in a cereal dispenser (slut!) and then it must have been KY in a ketchup dispenser. It was so unfair. Life is so unfair. Anyway, so that’s why I need the forty thousand’ and you said I could mortgage the house, right?

Poetica

‘Eh Lucy…. I’m home!!!!

I think I would like to live solely on Frosties from Wendy’s. That and peanut butter and banana on toast. With ice cold skim milk. Or a Frostie.

Oh wait. I like Chili Con Queso from Los Banditos here in town too, although I’m deathly allergic to it. That’s me. Allergy bad ass living on the edge.

I watched MTV’s Goth Sex expose last night. In it, there was a marine biologist or some other perfectly respectable career toting man who had his teeth sharpened like fangs and went by the name “Batman”. And I’m thinking his was not the “Na na na na na na na na Batman!” Biff Boom Zowie Adam West kind of Batman either. But I’m willing to believe he had a tool belt of some kind. And probably a cape. He liked to bite into his lover and then had this weird mantra “when you give me your pain it is beautiful”. It made me want to break every one of my Cure CDs. What is more, most of the songs from the B-roll were songs from one of my favorite mix CDs. Almost precisely in the same order, too. I think I’m just sad. And even sadder still was that I watched the second episode of whatever Hell-Sex-MTV-Show-It-Was and found that I wanted to go shopping very badly with the male prostitute. We have the same taste, he and I. I’m not sure what that says about me, though. He looked a bit like Beck, only prettier and with far more denial.

But the weird thing about the Goth Sex was that one of the Goths had six rings pierced into his back. I just don’t understand it. I mean, why go through life imitating a Mead Spiral-Bound notebook? Perhaps he wanted to wear some lovely ribbons through those rings. It’s boggling my little sheltered mind what they might be used for. Perhaps he wanted to make sure that he never lost his keys.

Mmmm… sushi. I also couldn’t live without a little tuna roll and wasabi. But I wouldn’t want to live on that. And I can’t imagine that a Frostie would go well with sushi. For that one needs Diet Coke or some lovely plum wine.

I’m back at work today. They can’t figure out how to keep the temperature of my office from fluctuating less than 20 degrees. At this moment, it is 40 degrees outside and the air conditioning is running. I’m wearing my leather sheerling coat at my desk, over a vest and a turtleneck. I hate to be a whiner but I really feel like trembling dramatically and stating “Excuse me! I have pneumonia!” but then my Midwestern sensibility kicks in and I straighten up my shivering spine, stick out my wavering chin, and suck it up like a good little repressed girl. You have to remember that I live in a society where wearing designer clothes means that you’re “show-offish” and going to therapy means that you’re “off in the head”. You suck it up and don’t complain. And if that means that you finish playing three volleyball games after dislocating your serving arm at the shoulder and relocating it yourself, well, then you’ll do it and you’ll like it. And when you drive yourself to the hospital in tears afterwards, the doctor will clap you on your back and call you a tough little jock and it will be perhaps the proudest moment in your life.

Not that I would know from personal experience or anything.

It’s a sad, sad day though. In my cubicle, I have a very lovely black and white calendar of New York, all 1940’s images, and my very favorite image is March, which is a picture of the inside of Grand Central Station, with long luminous fingers of light filtering through the crescent windows. And the commuters who are touched by the light are blurry, as if they had been imbued with a certain sense of urgency by, whereas the other people are stationary. It’s lovely and wonderful and it makes me happy to look at it, with all of those overcoats and hats and women in stockings that you just know must have veiny black seams up the backs. It reminds me of a cathedral in England I visited, where all of the stained glass had been blown away by WWII bombs and replaced with clear glass. It’s truly a wonderful photo. And today, I must change the calendar (since I have been sick since the beginning of April). April’s photo is the Brooklyn Bridge circa 1940, looking into Manhattan.

On the plus side, the birds are singing, the sun is shining, almost all of the snow is gone, my tulips and crocus’ are burgeoning up through the ground, and I haven’t coughed up any internal organs yet. It’s going to be a good month.

How about Boogie Woogie Poo???

Today on Jerry Springer: Midgets who aspire to be strippers.

I know that Jerry Springer jokes are older than Moses’ hairpiece, but I can’t make this stuff up, people. It was there staring me in the pneumatically coughing face today.

I felt bad for little Arlice, shaking her pint-sized bootay around the stage. And then I thought of a really good pneumonia joke for the diary, which had nothing at all to do with midget would-be strippers.

Here it is:

I have walking pneumonia. Word is out as to whether or not it will turn into the Boogie Woogie Flu.

Yeah, well, I know. Not so great. But midget strippers don’t really inspire the best jokes.

Then I turned the channel and got sucked into something like eight hours of Road Rules/Real World Battle of the Seasons. Mike, who has the hots for Tara, looks like the son of Marla Maples and Alfred E. Neuman. Tara reminds me of Meg Ryan, but bitchy and slapped around a lot. Timmy is one sweet trooper, but I love me some Josh now. I hated him in the three actual Road Rules episodes I caught with him and the Holly who is not married to Chadwick. But his pep talk to Holly today after they got their asses kicked by the rocking ladder (not to be confused with the rocking pneumonia nor the boogie-woogie flu’ I’m just saying)’. It made me love him just a little bit. Despite his goofy grin and his hair that looks like Barbie’s did after I washed her hair in the bathtub and got Mr. Bubble all in it. And the fact that he reminds me of a frat boy, TKE to be specific, who dissed my fine bootay at a spring mixer. Despite all that, I hold a wee bit of love for him now.

I could easily work a midget stripper joke off that ‘wee bit of love’ comment, but I’m taking the higher road and just backing off slowly.

You know, all of this lack of oxygen to my brain, it’s got me thinking’.

First of all, I think I’m starting to understand Ozzy Osbourne on The Osbournes. (Can you tell that I lost the remote in the down comforter and was forced to watch MTV? Thank god Carson Daly has a new job or I would have been forced to hang myself with a 350-thread count sheet when the slop that is TRL came on’ luckily, Ja Rule was hosting. But if it had been Carson, the online diary community would have been poorer an additional midget stripper joke. Ah, who am I kidding. I’ll bet no one made a midget stripper joke even once today.)

Ok, but Ozzy. Ozzy’s entire dialog is something like ‘I-I-I-ah-ah-em-arrgh-fallot-ar- Guggenheim.’ And then Sharon says &AO8AvwC9AO8AvwC9-At’s right, sweetie.’ And Kelly looks chagrined with her brightly colored pink hair that I would have coveted in 1986. Although, he had a piece of wisdom today, which I understood or maybe it was the aforementioned lack of oxygen, but still. Little Kelly had gotten herself a tattoo and Ozzy, in his wisdom gained from years of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, fucking eh, says to her ‘If you want to be an individual, DON’T get a tattoo. Everyone has one.’ Damn straight, Ozzy. Party on, dude. Or get yourself to a Drugged Out Old Rock And Roller’s home. You can have some heart to hearts with Keith Richards and Bob Dylan.

And maybe eat some boogie woogie stew.

HA! See. That cracks me up. If you want that to be funny, hold your breath for a few days, taking occasional breaths through a pillow, and then down a bunch of prednisone. And Sugar Free Kool-Aid. Tropical punch.

It’s given me a sort of red mustache. I feel like running around outside with a diaper on and having Esteban yell ‘Matilda Fannie May, you git yer sweet ass inside this minute!’ through the window. Wearing a stained t-shirt and scratching his belly.

Now this makes no sense. I’m going to bed. Eh fuck it.

My bi-monthly illness report

Ah.

Nothing like the sound of a pneumatic cough in the morning.

I’ve got pneumonia. Remember last Friday when I had to go home in the middle of the day to get my inhaler? That was the beginnings of it, apparently. Sunday night, I began to have the restless coughs and wheezes and couldn’t fall asleep, so I took some codeine. I woke up coughing so hard, tasting codeine, so I got up and read the newspaper and ate an ice cream sandwich (when in doubt, eat ice cream!). Then I attempted to sleep but every time I’d almost get to sleep, my breathing would go into that heavy deep sleep breathing and I would be awakened by the Whooo ahhh whhhheeeee of the crap in my lungs, singing like they were trying out as backups for the Whitney Houston/Mariah Carey Skank Ho Screechfest 2002. I called in sick at 2:30 A.M. Then I took some Ny-Quil and tried to go back to sleep. I managed to fall asleep just as it was getting light outside and the birds were chirping.

Then I spent all day yesterday in a delirious fog. I slept until 10:30, got up, called and made a doctor’s appointment, chatted with Chauffi a tiny bit, then went back to bed until it was time to go to the doctor. I was a bit apprehensive about driving out to my clinic, which is 20 miles away, and rightfully so. Everything had a surreal dreamlike quality.

And then, of course, they had to weigh me. Had I been able to get enough air into my lungs to curse at the nurse, I would have had some rather choice words to say to her, but I didn’t. I didn’t even bother taking off my shoes or taking my keys out of my pockets. And I had gained a pound. I tried using sign language to tell her that it might just be the forty-two pounds of phlegm and other crap in my lungs, or the fact that I’m cramped up like four kids in the backseat of a Volkswagen Beetle on a cross-country road trip, but I just thought to myself ‘Eh fuck it.’ Still, the gained pound is pissing me off. GD fudge.

So my doctor decided that I probably had walking pneumonia, but she wanted to take some chest x-rays to make sure. So they bring me into the x-ray thingy and the technician screws around for what was possibly eight hours trying to find some old x-rays I’d had done three years ago. She never found them. I stood in front of the x-ray machine and bent over it, resting my head on the pillow while she screwed around, my gown falling open to the ground. I didn’t care. ‘Eh Fuck it’ is a wonderful mantra when ill.

She took the first x-ray. It didn’t turn out so well, so she took another one. This time, she made me squash my breasts outward to get a clearer reading. I had a whole mammogram flashback. I was going to punch her if she made me do that one again, but she didn’t. Then we did the side view and then a second one of the side view because the first one didn’t take either. That one, she couldn’t blame on my buxom fun pillows because they weren’t even involved.

Finally, diagnosis: walking pneumonia. I asked what the difference was between ‘walking pneumonia’ and regular pneumonia, but she couldn’t tell me. I think I have ‘knocked off my ass pneumonia’ myself. I didn’t tell the doctor that, though. Because the whole ‘fuck it’ mantra precludes witty sarcasms.

The fall out from this: I’m shivering, hoarking, and generally cantankerous. I have three different pills to take and three days off of work, minimum. And I didn’t update my diary yesterday. And truthfully, today’s update isn’t all that great either, but I didn’t want anyone thinking that I had died or anything. No. Just felt like it.

The upside: I just added ‘hoarking’ to my spell checker. It wanted to change it to hoarding or ‘hoar king’.

Eh. Fuck it.

Adventures in Naked Plumbing

First of all, it’s Codeman’s birthday on Sunday, which is Easter, and his dad, Roadie Pig, one of the classiest diarists around, would like everyone to wish him a Happy 17th Birthday in his Guestbook.

So be a sport and Sign it. Go ahead. I’ll wait for you to get back.

See. I waited.

Anyway’.

Owning a home is a mixed blessing.

For instance, from our $850 monthly house payment, when you consider interest, our exorbitant taxes from living in our prestigious neighborhood (read: we pay the taxes for the doctors and lawyers who live three blocks up the hill from our house), and the other stuff that shows up on my monthly statement, about $200 gets paid toward actually owning our house. If you think of that in fractions, I think I now have one of our eight closets paid off in full. I’m hoping to score the smallest bedroom by next year, but I’m probably optimistic.

So we’ve got that going for us. And the fugly living room carpeting with the mysterious dark umber stain in an impossible to hide place (unless we go for a completely original arrangement and move all of our furniture to the center of the room)’ that’s ours to replace anytime we can cough up the dough. But realistically, not until Chelsea passes into the great kitty hereafter because she’s been using it as her own personal shagadelic litter box for the last 8 months. Hey, she’s 19, folks, I’m not going to try and argue with a senile cat at this point and go the behavior modification route. I just buy lots of Febreze.

But there are some downsides. For instance, when the central air went out the day after our wedding three years ago, I would have direly loved to phone up a landlord and say, ‘Come. Now. Fix.’ But instead we had to call the air conditioning people and pay $150 for him to come and remove a damn June Bug from the circuitry.

I hate mofo June Bugs.

But I digress.

So recently, our plumbing is possessed. Last summer, Esteban attempted to perform an exorcism on our 55 year old plumbing by replacing every single pipe with new stuff. The result was that we lost almost all of our excellent water pressure (because the pipes were less than half their original dimension due to all of the built up goop inside) and somehow, it got hotter. I’m not sure how exactly it got hotter, but it did. Apparently, there is MORE water coming out now, but it comes out not as fast. I don’t get it either.

And, due to the fact that I married the human equivalent of a Chia Pet, our bathtub drain gets clogged quite frequently. Apparently, there is something in a home called a Trap and apparently, it needs to be cleaned now and then. Esteban has performed a goopectomy twice since we’ve owned the house. There is nothing that he has to do, including cleaning out three-month-old Tupperware that has begun to speak in tongues, nothing that he speaks of with such vehemence than cleaning out the Trap. Nothing.

So yesterday morning, I took a shower. Normally I take one at night and he takes one in the morning, but since I’ve had shorter hair, I don’t like to go to bed with wet hair because it dries funny. Also, it doesn’t take as long to blow dry so it’s not a big deal. So some mornings, I take a shower in the morning. Esteban always is a morning guy, but he goes to work later than I do, so it’s no big.

By the time I had finished my shower (and contrary to popular belief, not all women take hugely long showers. Mine take roughly 5-7 minutes, including leg-shaving time. When I had long hair, I took about ten minutes.) I was standing in water past my calves. And it hadn’t drained when I left for work. I left the shower curtain open so that he would see that it was full and not blindly step into it, because that would really piss him off.

I forgot my inhaler at home and my asthma has been pretty bad this week, so I left work around 10 o’clock to run home and get it. The tub had only drained about two inches of the water. And I knew that Esteban hadn’t taken a shower because the cap from my shaving cream was floating in the water.

This was bad.

This morning, Lumberjack Neighbor woke us up at roughly 7:40 A.M. by splitting logs seven feet off our bedroom window. He uses physical labor to combat his sexual frustrations. So I guess you could say that he uses wood to prevent wood. (teehee’ I know it’s so juvenile, but it made me laugh) We managed to fall back asleep at some point and then woke around 9:00 a.m. Then we lounged in bed and I made the weekly Plea for Pancakes. Esteban acquiesced and the plan was that he was going to clean The Trap, and then we’d shower and go out for Pancakes.

With much disgust and intestinal fortitude, he tromped down to the basement in his underwear. The Trap is located in the ceiling of the basement and being naked apparently lessens the retch factor when the sludge drips down your arms and settles in your armpits.

He was not in a very good mood, let me tell you. I could hear him routing around in the plumbing, cursing at Tilly, and in generally getting more and more surly. He tried a couple of things, and then tromped back upstairs.

His hands were the blackest, foulest things I’ve ever seen in my life. And the stench. I cannot even describe the stench. It was as though Satan himself belched a big hot sauerkraut and boiled egg burp right in your face.

Esteban’s face was contracted in a constant grimace of revulsion. And his beloved wife?

Well, it was just so horrible and unreal that I’ just couldn’t stop laughing. Yep. I’m a laugher. I can’t help it. It was just so horrible and disgusting, so unbelievable, it cracked me up. I crack up when people puke too. One of the reasons that the puking skits on Jackass make me laugh so hard.

That, as you can imagine, did not improve Esteban’s mood in the least, standing there in his underwear with black slime dripping down his elbows, staring at me, giggling insanely.

He stood in the shower and I squirted a bunch of anti-bacterial soap onto his hands, and that removed some of the crap, but not all of it. We turned on the water and he rinsed, turning the water black’ the water pooling around his ankles.

Still not unclogged.

He went down into the basement and tried it again. He determined he needed a drain snake or something. He couldn’t find ours, so he sent me to the hardware store (I can’t imagine why he couldn’t go himself, being that he was in his underwear with the Black Hands of Putrification). I bought a snake. I thought about making a run through Starbucks but decided that he would not be pleased if I traipsed through the door with a mocha and a smile.

He snaked the drain. Again with the standing in the tub. Again with the squirting of the antibacterial soap. Again with the rinsing.

Again with the pooling black water.

By this time, Esteban was furious. He called Ward and June, who live roughly 15 minutes away, and told them that he’s coming over there to use his shower. I saw my visions of pancakes drift slowly away in a river of maple syrup. Then he gruffly demands that I call the plumber to come out TODAY, despite higher Saturday rates, and fix the tub. Then he stalked around shouting questions at me about the location of his jeans, his hat, his sanity.

I dialed the plumber and made arrangements for someone to come and look at our drain this afternoon. The minimum charge would be $65, which was a bargain compared to the flowers down the disposal incident last year, which cost $150, not including emergency room deductibles.

As I was on the phone with the plumber, I heard the drain go ‘Glurk glurk glurk’.

Esteban heard it too. He rushed in and ran water in the tub. It drained, no problems. I called the plumber back and canceled our request.

Esteban hopped into the tub and removed a big black hair wad from the corner of the tub and dropped it into the wastebasket. I made a face and then thanked him for taking care of that.

‘Oh that?’ He said. ‘That’s nothing compared to the things I’ve seen this morning. I would put that in my MOUTH rather than touch that septic crap again.’ And that sent me into a peal of giggles again.

Remarkably, he was still game for breakfast after he had his shower. He’s from hearty stock. I was only able to swallow a few bites of omelet and half a pancake, mostly due to the fact that I knew a blackened disgusting tub was waiting for me at home. And there was nothing like bending over scrubbing out a 50-year-old tub when you’ve got cramps. Not a thing like it in the world. That’s what I get for giggling like a fool.

Sometimes, apartments sound really nice.

Esteban: What did you do today?

Weetabix: I cleaned the tub, the toilet, the mirrors, the sink’

Esteban: The tub must have taken a long time.

Weetabix: It did’sorted all the socks, most of the laundry, fed the cats, watered the plants, did dishes, put away 42 of your hats’

Esteban: Oooh, you found my hats?

Weetabix: Yes.

Esteban: Where were they?

Weetabix: An easier question would be ‘where were they not’. Start putting them away.

Esteban: Where are they now?

Weetabix: Away.

Esteban: Where is that?

Weetabix: I think I understand the problem now. They are on the hat rack.

Esteban: Ooh, that’s so cool. I have hats again.

Weetabix: Um’ the hats’ put away your work stuff, put away your clothes, put away your shoes, put away the books you left out, fixed your dresser drawers which were all screwed up, cramped up, took Advil, swore at my gender, hated being a girl’

Esteban: Your eyebrows are growing back.

Weetabix: (getting a little irritated)I know, I need to pluck.

Esteban: You know, normal people have thick eyebrows. They’re not like’ a millimeter thin or something.

Weetabix: (silence, with lips pressed together tightly, uterus constricting in pain)

Esteban: You know, ‘ you kind of look like Spock.

Weetabix: (lips are now white from being pressed together)

Esteban: I mean’ I’m just saying’. What, honey’ what?

Weetabix: You. Don’t. Like. My. Eyebrows???

Esteban: (the gears turn, slowly but surely in his head as he processes’ housework’ uterus’ eyebrows’ bad) No’. no’ I didn’t say that.

Weetabix: (voice even and calculated, much like a lawyer during cross-examination) Why don’t you like my eyebrows?

Esteban: Nothing’. I said nothing’ pretend it didn’t happen’ that portion of time was erased and all is right with the world and you are the light of my life.

Weetabix: (fixes him with her gaze, Spock eyebrow raised)

Esteban: And did I mention that I cleaned the Trap today? In my underwear?

Weetabix: Uh-huh.

Esteban: I love you, honey.

Weetabix: Uh-huh.

Sticking with Not!Dogs from now on… for reasons like this

I just had a serious moment of misjudgement.

I had quilting class tonight and skipped dinner beforehand in order to make it to the class on time. I didn’t want the Quilt Nazi to slap her ruler over my knuckles or anything. Because seriously, have you ever seen quilting rulers? They are not like normal rulers. They are freaking huge!

It ended at 9:30 and by that time, I was rather cranky pants, having not eaten a thing since my minute lunch at 11:30. That was not good. I really need to have small portion snacks throughout the day, preferably small watercress sandwiches, with the crusts cut off, delivered on trays by butlers in crisply starched uniforms with highbrow English accents. But I’m not picky.

So I started to drive home but in my hungered delusional state determined that there was nothing edible in my house (which is NOT so! In fact, there are three leftover tenderloin steaks, some sliced strawberries, leftover meatloaf, and a ton of other Weetabix approved things to nibble)

The only thing that I wanted was a chili dog.

From the Varsity in Atlanta.

So.. uh… plan B.

First, my conscience kicked in and lectured that a chili dog at quarter to ten at night was not the wisest meal choice. All of those nitrates and carcinogens and other nasty stuff would certainly kill me before I woke up tomorrow, if they didn’t add 17 pounds directly to my bulbous ass. 17 pounds of cancerous tumors.

Perhaps a lovely healthy garden pita from Wendy’s? That would be more reasonable. Thus, I drove to Wendy’s and got some 99 cent chicken nuggets. I meant to say “Garden Pita” but it came out like “Chicken Nuggets”.

I took a bite of a nugget and decided that what it really needed was some chili. And that it had the texture of something that someone else had very thoughtfully pre-chewed.

I sighed, threw out the nuggets, and drove the other way, to an A&W, which has passable chili dogs. Once again, I wanted a small chili dog, no onions, but it came out of my mouth “Footlong… does that come with cheese on it too?”

The shame.

It should be noted here that one cannot expect to find quality chili dogs at A&W at 10 p.m.

I’m pretty sure that I was waited on by Screech from Saved By The Bell but I never realized Screech was actually a girl. Also, I watched in horror as Screech removed my hotdog from the MICROWAVE and then actually wrestled it into the bun. She had her back to me the whole time, but I could see that it was giving her some problems. I thought she was going to have to call in Mr. Belding. Then she closed up the little hotdog container, she put it into the bag and proceeded to stand the bag up ON ITS END.

It’s really my fault. It’s tempting the fates to be eating chili dogs at 10 pm at night. Sometimes I think I need a Greek chorus to follow me around and sing about why I shouldn’t do things.

I brought my chili dog home and opened it.

After being turned on its end, the chili had not moved. It was ice cold and gelatinous.

What is more, the hotdog was three sizes too large for the bun. I think she used a normal size bun or something but it looked positively pornographic, all pale and poking out of the bun.

I blushed. I kid you not. I actually blushed sitting in my own home, alone, looking at a hot dog.

This is when the Greek chorus would have done a little “We were so right” dance.

I threw it out.

When I tell people that I have issues with food, I don’t think they fully understand what I mean sometimes.

Weird moment: Earlier tonight, I was pulling into the Quilting shop’s parking lot and I got some weird looks from the various patrons in the lot. That’s when I realized that not only was my car thumping so loud that my side mirrors were vibrating, but I was listening to Nine Inch Nails sing that they wanted to “fuck you like an animal”.

One started up her car and her radio started playing, I kid you not, Michael Bolton. She turned it up a little, wanting to hear about how a man loves a woman, heeeeee heeeeeeeeee oooooooh, but NIN’s “You let me violate you… you let me desecrate you.” kicked Pansy Boy’s ass.

My next quilt, I think, will be made with black leather and possibly barb wire.
