Bring on the people from VH1!!!

I worry sometimes that I watch Bring it On far too often. I worry that it makes me a geek. I worry that I may someday call my boss a ‘cheertator’. I worry that when someone inevitably walks into the meat locker that they call our cubicle farm and says ‘Brrr it’s cold in here’ that I may jump up and do an elaborate clapping routine, shouting ‘There must be some Torros in the atmosphere’. Oh Ee Oh Ee Oh’ Ice Ice Ice’ Bring it down!’ and then everyone will look, mouths agape, arms akimbo.

Ok, not really, but I’ve always wanted to work in the ‘akimbo’ word somewhere. I remember that word from many books read in grade school. People were always standing ‘arms akimbo’. They really wanted to drill that word into our vocabulary. I don’t think that whole plot worked, though. I never really hear anyone use that word. Apparently The People’s Akimbo Partnership (PAP) have failed again.

Speaking of weird things in grade school, I’m eating a Slim Fast bar for breakfast because I was too lazy to make some Cream of Rice and kinda sorta want to look like Ann Jillian, or maybe be a ghost named ‘Jennifer’ living in the bedroom of teenage boy. Actually, I’m not sure if anyone is a Slim Fast spokesperson anymore. When they fall off the program, they are abandoned like plump little used Kleenex along with Cindy Williams and Bob Uecker.

So, this Slim Fast bar tastes like that orange sawdust stuff that they used to sprinkle over the urp of little kids in grade school’ but mixed with cocoa.

Perhaps I should just cut out the middleman and score me some of that orange sawdust. My, think of how much ass I would lose THAT way.

I’m just saying.

You may not want to read this next part. It’s a little gross. You might just want to skip down to past the next little segment line thingy.

Are you sure? I’m warning you.

You are a glutton for punishment, aren’t you.

Very well then.

I wonder if I were to walk into a grade school and throw up onto the floor, after a tasty breakfast of orange sawdust stuff’. Would they need to sprinkle it with the orange sawdust?

See. I warned you.

Is it too egotistical of me to desire my very own ‘Behind the Music’? Maybe it could be a ‘Behind the Diary’. But it would have to have that very serious announcer guy and those smarmy musical segues and flashy graphics. You know, that 80’s sounding synthesizer stuff, which can only be expressed in words as ‘Shoo Shuu Shoomp Swhump!&AO8AvwC9AO8AvwC9- that really didn’t do it justice but work with me here.

And maybe they’d have guests on’ famous guests to comment upon the diary. For instance, Gwyneth Paltrow could talk about how she was really ‘pro-fat people’ and was upset when I took a hard stance on the whole Shallow Hal thing (which, by the way, I haven’t seen, but apparently neither has the rest of the nation). J.Lo and Faith Hill could simper and be upset that I thought they were talentless hacks with fine round butts. Maybe a shot of Carson Daly crying, ‘I don’t understand why she thought I was a tool’. I always liked her.’ Or maybe just have Jimmy Fallon pretending to be Carson Daly. That would be fine. Maybe even better.

And then maybe they’d interview other diarists, like Roadie, Chauffi (who lurks in the bushes outside my window as a hobby), and maybe UncleBob. Perhaps Eloi could share some deep dark secrets and then I would be confronted with them and be forced to react. Maybe they’d interview my sister Mo, who would clarify that she no longer tailgates like a mofo. And then Esteban would call me a freak. And then the very serious announcer guy would sigh and wish he were narrating the very exciting and yet somewhat bitter Journey episode, which was the Best. One. Ever. Because it had Steve Perry on it, talking about his hip replacement.

Damn my perfectly functioning curvy hips. Damn them all to hell.

And now for some random gossip: Buffy is going to cut her hair. You heard it here first. Or maybe you didn’t. Maybe you were trying to mentally remove yourself from your family gathering on Christmas day and were watching E! Entertainment and saw the news scroll beneath Jules Asner (who is possibly the love child of Ed Asner and Rhoda’ not certain) that Buffy would be pulling a Felicity and chopping off her slayer locks, as though this were very important news and needed to be scrolled below the bottom of the screen and E! were somehow like CNN with an exclamation point and leg lights and John Tesh were somehow respectable.

I’m thinking about having a contest’ but I have no good prizes to give out. Maybe I could offer up my ass splinter. I still have it. It sits in a urine collection cup (an unused sterile one, sheesh!) in the backseat of the Monte, where it rolls to and fro along with my Moulin Rouge CD, but I’m not sure that anyone would want this piece of Weetabix lore. But if they owned it, I’m almost certain that they’d be contacted by the people at VH-1 when it came time to make my ‘Behind the Diary’ (you know… since it was actually IN the Diarist’s BEHIND!!). So there’s a benefit. Or maybe you could present it to your significant other or maybe just a stranger and say ‘Look at this ass splinter’ and they will give you lovely dove gray pearls. Perhaps it is a magical ass splinter. You just never know.

This is your Weetabix’. After reading too much Margaret Atwood mixed with Douglas Coupland.

I’m dreaming of a White Trash Christmas!

So Christmas.

It was a veritable stew of family dysfunction. My family aside, for whom dysfunctional interactions are an art, much like an Obsession by Calvin Klein commercial, the winner for dysfunction is Esteban’s paternal side of the family.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s not a bad thing. It’s kind of a Jerry Springer meets It’s a Wonderful Life thing.

The cast:

The Good: that would be Esteban’s Aunt Teresita, his ‘uncle’ Dawid (Teresita’s long term and very cool common law husband), Ward and June, and Esteban and myself.

The Bad: Esteban’s Grandma, who insists that we call her by her first name, Genevieve. She has a bit of a mean streak. Ward went to Vietnam to get away from his mother. But we (cough) love her anyway.

The Ugly: Esteban’s Uncle Rod (Ward’s older brother), Rod’s wife of thirty years, Aunt Letitia (who is an affable, lovable, intelligent, and yet completely averse to confrontation of any sort), and Rod’s mistress, whose name is, I kid you not, the name of an alcohol’ but I’ll give her the pseudonym of Tequila’ which is closer than I really should get to her real name but what the hell.

Yes, you read that right. Rod is married to Letitia, but lives with Tequila, who is this washed out epitome of a used bar fly, smoking three to four packs of cigarettes a day (I’m not making that up, either. She told me that and I thought at first that she was kidding. She buys them off the Internet for $1.75 a pack’ I think from Mexico or something), gambling extensively, and always talks as though she were barking out short orders to a fry cook named Cletus.

And Letitia is ok with this. In fact, Tequila was wearing a Christmas present that she had received from Letitia. If I was Letitia, I would have given Tequila a pre-tied noose, not a cutsey embroidered sweatshirt’. But that’s just me.

An agreement had been made this year’. Between Ward and June and Teresita and Dawid, that we would not be giving Christmas presents this year. That was fine with me, actually. The folks in the ‘Bad’ and ‘Ugly’ segment are also notoriously atrocious gift-givers, usually leaning toward tacky 70’s style crafts and strange flair. One year, I got a lava lamp. Sadly, that was the coolest gift I received from that group that year.

Another year, I got a pantyhose organizer. You know, for all those pantyhose I wear.

And organize.

Last year, Rod and Tequila gifted us with a beer bottle opener on what appeared to be a varnished hunk of plywood, with ‘Open up another Round in Eagle River, Wisconsin’ pasted onto it with black stick-em letters. I actually accidentally said ‘Oh, we’ll have to put that in the garage!’ realizing too late that they had expected me to perhaps hang it in our living room, in the spot of honor’ or perhaps the place for drinking from returnables.

So I shed no tears over the fact that I would not need to fake a joyous expression at receiving another snowman made from empty milk jugs or fugly indescribable ‘What is it?’

Then Rod called everyone and said, ‘Here’s what we’re all going to do’ which meant ‘This is what Tequila and I have decided to do.’. They were going to collect $20 from each of us. For that $20, we would receive $10 worth of lottery tickets. The other $10 would apparently go to a charity of some sort.

What he neglected to say was that Tequila and he had decided this, and then called everyone in the family, acting as though EVERYONE ELSE had decided this already. Everyone felt as though they had to participate because they really had no choice in the matter.

Which pissed me off. Playing the lottery is just the states way of taxing stupidity. Also, I really disliked this manipulation of our funds. If I want to give to charity, which I do, I don’t need to be coerced into doing it.

When we got together yesterday, Tequila handed us our envelopes, each with our names written upon them, while Rod collected $20 from each of us. Inside the envelopes were five lottery tickets and five scratch-off tickets. The lottery tickets were from last Saturday’s drawings. Tequila had kindly included a slip with the winning numbers on it. So does that mean that Tequila had to have KNOWN what the winning numbers were BEFORE she stuffed the envelopes? Why, yes it does! Does it surprise anyone that NO ONE won even a single $1 on those tickets? Not that there was a very high likelihood of that anyway, but still.

What is more, Tequila collected our losing scratch-off tickets, because apparently there’s some kind of second chance thing where you send in losing tickets and possibly win cash that way. So Tequila demanded all of our losing tickets from us. So she could send it in. For herself. Then she announced that ‘they’ had decided that if anyone won anything over $120, then they would have had to split it with everyone. Also, they opened and scratched off the tickets for two people who did not attend, so now those folks get the joy of handing over their $20 without ever even seeing the actual lottery tickets.

God bless us, every one.

The clincher of the gathering was that Rod and Tequila were going to take care of sending the additional money to charity. Whatever.

The thing that really annoyed me was not the forced gambling on the day baby Jesus was born, not the raspy, nicotine addled trailer trash voice rambling about her ‘daytime stories’, not even how she immediately claims the best chair in the most prominent place for herself and ensconces herself like she’s the best Bingo Caller in the Holler. It wasn’t even her fuzzy slippers which were red, white, and blue adorned with a flag of glitter (because THAT will honor those lost on September 11th’ stomping around in flag slippers) undoubtedly setting her back at least $3.99 at Family Dollar.

No. I could live with that.

The thing that bothers me is that she is always telling me to smile.

‘Weetabix!’ She’ll bark. ‘Smile!’

And she says it like she was ordering a double shot of lower rail whiskey or something.

It’s not even a bark. It’s more of a bray. She brays at me.

‘Smile!’ And then she’ll demonstrate to me what I should be doing, exposing her mouth full of yellow Chiclets.

‘You look so sober!’ She said when I just stared at her in disbelief.

Somber’ I thought to myself You ignorant piece of road kill but I suppose sober worked too, since I wasn’t actually imbibing any spirits, something she is undoubtedly unaccustomed to in her own Very Trailer Christmas experiences.

So then I must smile at her. Or she’ll keep braying like some kind of Drill Sergeant of Nascar Rallies or whatnot.

So we fled from that family gathering to my family, who is dysfunctional, but in a repressed Lutheran ‘My Jello salad is better than your Jello salad’ kind of way, with its petty little barbs said with smiling faces. Not in a ‘Ma! The baby’s hogging all the smokes’ kind of way.

Basically, my Mafia Grandma and Aunt Drusilla were evidently pissed at me for showing up late because we’d been at the Lottery Of Ill Repute Christmas Extravaganza. And then Aunt Drusilla was pissed because I gave Abby a present after waiting for an hour for her to stop screwing around in the kitchen. And then we all started handing out presents without her.

We hung around for about two hours. When we left, my M.G. came and gave me a hug. I got a little frightened. I don’t think she’s voluntarily hugged anyone in my lifetime’ at least no one over the age of 12. I started freaking’. Like maybe a guy would be waiting in the backseat of my car with a piano wire, or maybe that I was going to be taken in a boat to be shot and dumped into the lake.

Did I mention that one of my presents from Esteban was the Godfather DVD set? We watched it last night. It was strangely appropriate, with the gambling, booze, and adultery. In fact, I may make it a Christmas tradition.

Deck the Harrs with Barrs of Horry

Fa Ra Ra Ra Ra Ra Ra Ra RAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!

That’s all I have to say today.

My apologies to Clement Clarke Moore

Twas the day before the day before Christmas and all through Casa Weetabix

Not a creature was stirring but for a curvy round girl pulling out all her holiday tricks

the laundry needed washing, presents needed wrapping

her fingernail polish chipped, litter box full of cat crappings

a box of Ghiradelli cookie mix sat unopened and wasted

the visions she had of passing the cookies off as homemade were no longer to be tasted

all about the home unwrapped presents lay scattered

while yon curvy Weetabix had apathy, none of that mattered

without women, it seemed, Christmas just doesn’t get done

guys just don’t seem to care about well-thought out gifts and happy food of the season

doubled over with cramps, Weet flew from her computer desk

scurried around, trying to comprehend the mess

presents in the Monte, presents in the garage,

presents in the dining room, hall and in her long term storage

all waiting for her hands to wrap, tape and adorn

while Esteban surfed the internet looking for porn (ok, not really, but it rhymed)

“Up, Up I say!” She said with alarm

“I need help with this! Cause I don’t give a darn

If you’re a big burly guy with no care for the season

half this shit’s for YOUR family, that’s enough reason

for you to get wrapping, get tying, start making bows

Get moving, get up, go now go!”

Esteban rose from his seat, afraid of this beast

who had the PMS and wasn’t caring in the least

He got in his truck, drove off in a hurry

returned with 65 gift bags, tissue paper, and then he did scurry

stuffing the bags with all Weet’s holiday stash

far less stressful than wrapping and well worth the cash

Weetabix smiled at her spouse, tipped back a Blind Russian and said “let’s hit the hay”

Esteban checked his watch thoroughly and said “It’s the middle of the day!”

“I know” said dear Weet, “but I must confess

I’ve been a bad girl… and you’ve been the best.”

She gave him a kiss and then off they went to bed

where Weetabix gave him an early Christmas present for him to unwrap instead

They were heard to exclaim before they closed the door and turned off the lights

“Have a super Holiday season and don’t get too stressed…. good night!”

Think of all the fun I’ve missed… think of all the karaoke hosts I’ve gotten pissed

It’s going to snow this weekend!!!!!

While I know that this will likely upset my friend RoadiePig, as he is involved in the removal of said white stuff, I’m totally stoked.

WOOOOOO!!!!

(Weetabix does a little ‘Chubby Snow Bunny’ dance)

Two days ago, as I was walking out of Barnes & Noble with a venti hot Blackberry & Ice tea in my hand, wrapped snuggly in suede and faux fur, it started snowing a little. Weak but stubborn little flakes flurrying with the wind. It only lasted for about five minutes but it was a wonderful thing, standing there with gifts of books and DVDs for my family in my right hand, a big hot tea keeping my other hand warm, my breath swirling white and little tiny flakes hitting my skin with delicious little cold bursts.

Mmmmm&AO8AvwC9AO8AvwC9- love snow!

I’m thinking of getting a snowboard. Now, likely this will not happen as I enjoy my neck as unbroken as it is, but I like toying with the idea of being hot shit on the slopes. In reality, I’d fall on my ass and then probably cry until Esteban came and picked me up. Or, even more likely, Esteban would refuse to go out with me, as he is a grumpy Burgermeister and doesn’t enjoy any sports even though he does enjoy watching his wife make a fool of herself, and then I would cry and lay there, unable to get up. Either way, not a pretty picture.

I just want me some snow. And some hot Tom & Jerrys. And maybe a fireplace. I don’t have a fireplace, but I need some new living room furniture and new carpeting anyway, so I’m thinking about grilling me up my entertainment center instead. Lurve that holiday spirit!

I went to karaoke last night’ at the Ass Splinter bar.

One thing I hate about the Ass Splinter bar’. Aside from the miscellaneous pieces of furniture which find their way into your tender flesh, that is’. is the karaoke hostesses.

The thing is run by this girl and her mom. This wouldn’t be a big issue, but usually, when you’re a karaoke host, you’re generally a pretty fabulous singer. Not a Broadway quality singer’ but you can hold your own. Karaoke Girl and Karaoke Ma are not that great. Karaoke Girl can hold her own on the songs she knows but she’s tonedeaf and hurts my ears whenever she tries anything new. Karaoke Ma, on the other hand, sings in a monotone and sings the mustiest old man songs I’ve ever heard, such as ‘North To Alaska’. And she has a beehive hairdo. And she’s four feet tall’ with the beehive.

That’s not even the main problem. The main problem is that they are microphone hogs. They will sing five to six songs in a row while other people are waiting to sing. The itinerary will go something like this: Karaoke Girl, Karaoke Girl, Karaoke Ma, Karaoke Ma, Patron #1, Patron #2, Karaoke Girl (doing something she claims was a request), Patron #3, Karaoke Ma, Karaoke Ma, Patron #4, Patron #5, Patron #6, Patron #7 and then it will start all over again with Karaoke Girl twice and Karaoke Ma twice.

I hate the Karaoke Ma. Hate. Her. What is it about short round women in their fifties? They all get psychotic or something. She has this fetish about the karaoke song books. They have six of them. Even if you have a table of ten people all wanting to sing songs, Karaoke Ma will only allow you to have one book at your table’ regardless of the fact that there is still a pile of five books up there.

‘One book per table!’ She’ll squeak at you, like a deranged little post-menopausal B-52 girl.

One time, I went up and fetched two books for our table of ten people. Karaoke Ma actually followed me across the bar, grabbed me by the shoulder and spun me around, snatching one of the books from my hand. I snatched it right back, not really in the mood for that Karaoke Obsessive Compulsive Bitch. She yelled ‘One book per table!’. I said, ‘I’ll bring it back if you run out of books! Christ!’ She wouldn’t let go of the book and I had to cold cock her down onto the dance floor. Then it was a total cat fight, with nuances from ‘Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon’, with me rising up, hovering six feet off the floor, kicking her in the face while she sang ‘Oooh Eeee Oooh Eeee Baby! Won’tcha let me take you on a Sea Cruise?’.

Or something like that.

She’s hated me ever since.

Last time, Joel hid our karaoke book in the men’s urinal. I’m certain at the end of the night, when she realized it was gone, she was frisking people, strip searching them for her beloved three-ring binder with the songs alphabetized using the White Trash filing system which necessitates that Pretenders, The follows Pat Benetar, Patsy Cline, and Peter Gabriel.

I sang ‘Santa Baby’ and got the first authentic crowd reaction of the night. Karaoke Girl shot me a bitchy look, as she had been singing her mostly-flat versions of ‘I wanna have some fun’ by S-s-s-samantha Foxx and ‘It must have been love’ by Roxette (a theme carried out well by her overly-permed big 80’s hair) to nary a titter from the crowd.

‘Don’t hate me because my voice doesn’t sound like a rusty gate.’ I said as I walked past her.

‘Bitch.’ She said

‘Talentless stage hog’ I countered.

‘Diva.’ She hissed.

Now that hurt. She didn’t have to get personal. Sheesh.

The plus side of the evening was that Born To Run Guy was there and he watched me intently when I was doing the whole Marilyn Monroe act during my song, starting with the whispery little girl voice and ending in full-out Ethel Merman throaty blues voice.

Yeah. Ok. I’m a diva. What’s it to ya?

Well, I was planning on writing about the day Weetabix and Mo were almost killed by a pyschotic school bus driver, but I’m taking a half day today, so I guess you’ll have to wait.

Have a super duper Weekend-Before-Christmas!!!!

They do get weary…. WEARING that same old dress…. when they get weary…. try a little ESTROGEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m having one of those ‘Three Estrogen Martinis’ kind of days.

This completely explains the migraine last week. This completely explains my irrational crankypants attitude. This explains the new zit that has erupted upon my chin.

This does not explain the auxiliary zit that has sprouted up next to the first zit. Perhaps it is the first runner up’ should the first zit be unable to perform its duties, the second zit would step in for complete and total uglification of my face.

Yes. I just totally made that word up.

And the cramping. Have I mentioned the cramping? It is days like this that I really hate being a girl. I mean, girlness is really grand. We get to wear lots of diamonds, get free samples of makeup at Dayton’s, and be exempted from manual labor for the simple reason that we’re an innie instead of an outtie. But we’re also the first person voted off the island, have actual humans extracted from a hole that’s thisbig and are objectified in a decades worth of hair band videos.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not complaining. Ewan McGregor is reason enough to like being a girl. Ewan likes girls. Thus, this is a good thing.

But the cramping and the zitting I could do without. I’m just saying. Oh, and control top pantyhose. Don’t like those either.

You know what else I don’t like? Feminine hygiene commercials which try to show how absorbent a pad is by dumping blue liquid into it, as though women spontaneously spew forth Windex every twenty eight days.

‘Oh, I have cramps but my how the toilet bowl is sparkly! And look’ no streaks!’

I mean, they already have to put so many euphemisms into the whole thing. Feminine protection’. What the heck is that? At risk of sounding like the former white trash princess that I aim to be, feminine protection should be pastel firearms or possibly a loaded checkbook, NOT a bleached hunk of paper product with dri-weave and WINGS. This misogynistic notion that we fragile flowers must be protected from ourselves is ridiculous. I need protection from idiots, not from a little menstruation.

To quote Esteban last night, ‘Good evening ladies and gentleman, this is your pilot. If you look out the right side of the plane, we’ve just passed the land of Reason, cruising at 4500 feet, we should be arriving at Irrationality well before our estimated arrival time. Keep your seatbelts on, as we’re bound to encounter some turbulence.’

Excuse me. If you need me, I’ll be out on the street corner, pan-handling for some freaking Ibuprofen, ‘k?

On a lighter note, I’ve got a Club Weetabix thing happening tonight, so maybe I’ll just load up on the Blind Russians and be done with it. I mean, I’ll still have cramps and a primary and secondary zit, but I likely won’t care.

So there.

“How could it be so?It came without ribbons! It came without tags! It came without packages, boxes, or bags! (or baskets)

Christmas is a crazy time of year.

Boy. That sounded dense. That was like saying ‘Ice is very very cold’ or ‘Carson Daly is a bit of a tool’ or ‘My sister Mo tailgates like a mofo’.

But seriously, I am borderline haggard. I had a mini-breakdown last night before I left work, thinking of everything I had to do that evening: get baskets for some gift baskets I’m putting together, get a gift certificate for my boss from my team, pick up a muscle relaxant from the pharmacy for my neck muscle which tends to go all wacky when I’m stressed out, purchase many many frames for various Christmas gifts, buy beer for said gift baskets, buy snacks for said gift baskets, go to the Post Office and return a package, finish wrapping gifts for a Christmas party tonight at Ward and June’s house, prepurchase movie tickets for ‘Lord of the Rings’, fa la la la la la la la la!

First stop: Pier 1 for baskets. I tried to do a bit of shopping, because truthfully, I totally enjoy Pier 1. Five of the seven pictures hanging in my living room are from Pier 1. Most of my glassware is Pier 1 as well, as is my entire bar set of martini glasses, champagne flutes and decanters (the rest is all inherited cut crystal from Esteban’s family).

It could reasonably be said that Pier 1 rocks my world. However, someone should probably tap Kirstie Alley on the shoulder and let her know that the flakey thing just doesn’t work for her. Also, the Pier 1 shopper is either a young, quirky, poor college student with a penchant for funky candles and cheap china OR an older, established yet still desperately trying to hold onto the avante guarde older woman with a manicure and expensive shoes.

I found two baskets which will undoubtedly not be appreciated, as the recipients are men and apparently the gene which allows one to understand the whole basket genre is recessive and located upon the X chromosome. Sometimes I think I have been cursed with trisomy-Wicker. (Which I’m certain no one will get other than my Human Variability professor, Dr. Mahoney’ Hi Joe!)

I then perused the store, which was extremely full of older women with poofy highlighted hair, strange bottled tans, and expensive hand-knit Swedish sweaters. I stopped by the kitchen glass, and tried to pick up one of the glass canisters, to see the price tag on the bottom. The lid fell off, caught each vase on the four shelves below it, and crashed to the ground on the tile floor, exploding into some fairly impressive large shards of glass.

If anyone in the store DIDN’T hear the sound of six pieces of glass independently breaking, I’m most certain that they heard me yell ‘JEEPERS!’ at the top of my lungs.

Only it wasn’t ‘Jeepers’. It was another word all together.

Far off, perhaps near the authentic yet reasonably priced African masks, I heard someone gasp in shock. Not only was I destroying mass quantities of $12 vases, I was assaulting the very hip atmosphere of Pier 1, with its diverse merchandise and retro Christmas tunes and six different kinds of Charger plates, with the most guttural of all Anglo-Saxon curses.

A woman, a very thin woman with tipped hair and far too much eye-makeup, stepped into view, looked at me and gave me one of the most evil, hate-filled glare I’ve ever received in my entire life. I was shocked. I met her eyes and gave a weak smile, about to warn her to watch her step so she didn’t cut herself, and she continued to glare at me as though I had offered to ritualistically slaughter puppies in sacrifice to Hitler or possibly as though I had admitted to being the person responsible for that ‘Christmas Shoes’ song that is being played to death.

I stood there until a very hip sales clerk with a nose piercing came by and said she’d go get a broom. Then I waited for her to return, still making sure that no one would accidentally walk through the field of glass. When she returned, I offered to pay for the six vases, including the one whole one with the broken top which started it all. She thanked me for offering profusely, but said that they didn’t make people pay for broken stuff. Then she gave me all sorts of props for hanging around to guard the glass.

It was then, helplessly watching her clean up the glass, that I had a sinking realization. She was being super customer-focused because I was no longer one of those penny-pinching but uber cool college girls. No. Me in my new suede sheerling jacket which still smells like a leather store, matching gloves, shoes which had been priced still in the double digits, but just barely in the double digits, kind of funky silver necklace, and department store makeup. I was one of the women who come in and think nothing of dropping $100 on goofy stuff, one of the women who sashay in and out of the store between manicures, toting their cellphones, with tons of plastic in their designer purses. I was one of those women. I was a mixer of cocktails. I was a baker of cookies, a driver to soccer. I was the gatherer of a household. I was the holder of a joint checking account, fed greatly in part by a husband who enjoys living in a tastefully decorated home. I was concerned about how my fingernails looked. I was one of those women.

I was going to hurl.

After being assured that my little glass mess was no longer a threat to the sisterhood of Pier 1, I paid for my baskets (with plastic, god help me) and fled. The store sighed in relief and I had a horrible vision as I walked out the double glass doors that they would shatter in my hands.

Next stop, the scrapbook store for a gift certificate for my boss. That went fairly uneventfully. I then drove home, where I would meet my sister to go shopping for picture frames. I tried to decompress on the drive over, but ended up tooling around a bit while listening to Nickelback and Sarah McLachlin.

When I finally went home, about ten minutes before Mo was to arrive, I found her car already in my driveway. Esteban had stayed home sick, so I figured he must have let her in the house. When I walked in the door, Mo was sitting in our recliner, watching Buffy.

‘Where’s Esteban?’ I asked.

Apparently, Mo had stopped over a half hour early. She had knocked on the door, seeing Esteban’s truck in the driveway. No one answered. She tried the front door and found it open. She yelled a bit and then just walked in and sat down. Our bedroom is in the far back of the house, in an addition. It is virtually soundproof from the rest of the house, being outside the natural walls of the original house. Esteban never heard her and was sleeping, as he does, in his underwear.

And then he needed to go to the bathroom’ which required him walking through the hall, which was in full view of Mo.

Luckily, Esteban doesn’t care. It was very funny when she told me. I then left with her without going into the bedroom to talk to him, as I didn’t want to be somehow blamed for the entire Fruit of the Loom calamity, as I was somehow certain I would be.

We then went shopping. I purchased $140 in picture frames, (which was supposed to be a cheap alternative to actual Christmas presents’ ha! The pictures that will go in them will likely be another $200), then took Mo to dinner. Then I just gave up. Part of the problem with Christmas stress is that apathy sets in very quickly when I’m pushed. I had it during planning my wedding as well’ we didn’t have wedding programs because I declared ‘Fuck it!’ the day before my wedding.

But, unfortunately, I cannot declare ‘Fuck it’ for the remainings of my shopping. I have exactly one present wrapped, and that was only because when I bought it, there was a table setup, offering free wrapping with donations appreciated for Special Olympics, so I had the $5 book wrapped and gave them a $3 donation. One down, 153 presents to go.

Thus, I am taking a half day off today, to go and wrap roughly 34 necessary presents for tonight, as well as purchase the beer to go into the gift baskets, assemble them, wrap them and place very attractive bows upon them. I create this stress. I realize this now. I should know not to attempt the basket trap. The basket trap begins with the notion that it will be a really cool present for a hard person to shop for’. A $17 basket, $40 in snacks, $30 in beer later, you’ve got an $87 present for someone for whom you normally spend $25-30. And a bucket of stress to go along with it.

Next year, I think I’ll just shop with my older, affluent sisters of Middle-Aged Hipness and get the guy a nice wool sweater or something. Maybe even a Swedish hand-knit.

And her heart grew three sizes that day.

Signs that the honeymoon is over at Chez Weetabix

Esteban: You just want another husband.

Weetabix: Oooh, a second husband? An additional husband?

Esteban: Sure’ you’d like that, wouldn’t you? Who would you pick?

Weetabix: Someone I could bend to my will’ or maybe Kiefer Sutherland.

Esteban: Then we’d have his wacky father as an in-law. Yuck.

Weetabix: But then I’d have a dark and brooding husband AND also a blond brooding husband. Hmmmm’ maybe I should rethink that.

Esteban: I’m not brooding.

Weetabix: You’re Grumpy McBroodsalot.

Esteban: Bah’.

Weetabix: Oooh, that would be so great though’. We could gang up on you and make you pick up your socks. Hmmmm’ but how would that work’. I mean, I would want the big bedroom then, and maybe we’d have a sort of monk’s chambers set up in the library’ maybe bunk beds for when I didn’t want to sleep with either one of you.

Esteban: You’re thinking about the logistics of this far too much. I just wanted to know who you’d pick’.

Weetabix: I think Penn Jillette.

Esteban: Who is that?

Weetabix: You know’ Penn and Teller?

Esteban: You’re kidding now.

Weetabix: No I’m not’ then I’d have two tall dark-haired husbands with curly pony tails and a propensity for sarcasm’.. but I’d bet I’d have to remind Penn to not bring cockroaches into the house and stop having his weird quiet friend around so much’. Wait, aside from the red fingernail thing, you are already Penn’. Nevermind.

Esteban: You’re a freak’ you know that?

Weetabix: I’m not the one who suggested having a second husband’although I admit that I’m such a good catch, men should have to fight over me.

Esteban: Woooo’ I think it just got crowded in here’. No wait, that’s your ego.

Weetabix: See’ this is one of those times that Kenneth and I would gang up on you.

Esteban: Kenneth? I thought it was Penn.

Weetabix: Kenneth Branagh’. I changed my mind. I want someone with a great English accent’ plus, he appreciates Shakespeare. Still the brooding thing though’ but it would be brooding in iambic pentameter.

Esteban: (sigh)

Weetabix: Wait’ can I have three husbands?

Esteban: I knew it’ you’re getting greedy now. Good night.

Weetabix: Mmmmm’ this is a GREAT topic’ Love this topic!

Esteban:(turns off the light) Good night!!!

Chelsea: Meow!!!

Get thee behind me Sultry Kitten of Diarrhea!

Yesterday, I learned that the hardest substance known to man is the head of an average three-year-old.

Jonathon came over to ‘visit’ with me yesterday (read: play The Sims on Esteban’s computer while I played the Sims and surfed the internet on MY computer’. It was a nice brother/sister moment, I tell ya’. knowing my mom, that’s probably the most quality time he’s had in months) and when I brought him back home, it turned out that Mo and Abby were at my mom’s to celebrate Mo’s birthday. I invited myself and ate some of my mom’s cooking, which is always nice. I got to play with Abby, which is even nicer. We had an elaborate game of tickle torture during commercial breaks of the Charlie Brown Christmas Special.

It was during one of those commercial breaks when the back of her head smashed into my mouth and made me look bee-stung, like Barbara Hershey’s cosmetically-enhanced Beaches lips.

I spent the rest of the night kissing one of our freezer packs. It smelled mildly of corn. Time for a new box of baking soda, I guess.

Man, I’m amazed people read this thing sometimes.

Last night I went to bed with a horrible headache, much to Esteban’s chagrin. Apparently, my body must give off pheromones without my approval and this makes me irresistible. I sent him to the far corner of our bed for a time out at one point. Then I tried to snuggle into my lofty goosedown pillow and Esteban was right there again, chastising me for being an undulating sex kitten, all stretching and purring and such.

‘I’m just getting comfortable!’ I said.

‘I’m very fragile when I’m turned on,’ he said, accusing me. ‘I’m like erotic china.’

I suppose it was my fault. I was probably dressed provocatively, with my extra roomie Green Bay Packers t-shirt and pink flowered boxer shorts. This is probably how Lolita and Jezebel got their reputations. Most likely, my untimely death will involve towers and hungry dogs.

The headache was actually a precursor to some horrible gut cramping which woke me up at 3:00 this morning. You know it’s really bad when all you want to do is collapse on the floor of the bathroom. My ass hates me for forsaking its bulbous qualities, and thus was seeking revenge in the only way it knew how…. explosive gastrointestinal pain, complete with gurgles and strange internal moans which sounded like a far too rusty hinge being forcibly opened after many years. Tilly had followed me into the bathroom and actually fled at the sound. I think she feared possible projectiles, using her keen feline intuition.

I haven’t felt like that since the time I contracted food poisoning during my stay in London. I’ve always blamed the mayonnaise at the Robert Browning pub. It was room temperature when I slapped it on my red bean burger. My buds were eating the red bean burger too and suffered no ill effects. I was sick for four days, living on plain brioches and Evian water. I could only nibble on the slightest pieces, as anything larger than pea made my stomach twist and convulse. Thus, I carried plain rolls in my bag wherever I went, like some dysenteric Gretal, nibbling tiny pieces of bread here and there, searching for my Hansel and house made out of candy.

My first ever use of a pay toilet was in Canterbury cathedral. I got my money’s worth there. I’m certain that my 40 pence went toward hiring a Haz-Mat crew to clean up. I bent in prayer for Thomas A’Becket to relieve my sour gut. Later, one of my flatmates made me some chicken soup and I was cured.

I’m not sure what did it to me this time. Yesterday, I had grilled salmon, rice pilaf and grilled veggies at Applebee’s and spaghetti at my mom’s. Later, I had an Eggo Nutrigrain waffle with real maple syrup as a snack. While the jury is still out on the culprit, Applebees, I’m looking your way. Whichever the guilty party, I was cursing them up a storm between 3:00 A.M. and 6:00 A.M. this morning, between the stomach cramps and the uncontrollable shivering.

On the upside, I’m almost certain that I’ve lost a good five pounds from the incident. And today, I’m only eating dry french bread and Dasani, so I’ve got the whole minimum security affluent prison diet going on very well. If it continues, I should be in DisneyWorld by summer.

Go anorexia!

No. Not really. But a little dysentary is good for the soul. Maybe it will knock all of that unconscious tawdry temptress attitude out of me when I’m trying to fall asleep at night, anyway.

A little retarded hospitaliano

Yesterday, after the funeral (which, inexplicably starts with the word “fun”), Esteban had plans with Ward to work on our kitchen remodeling project. I myself had plans as well, one being to go and pick up my kicky new eyeglasses which are really just an expensive fashion accessory.

So we split up for the day, I wound my way back across town, listening to a fabulous CD mix in the Monte, singing, and trying to shake the residual misery from my funeral (yet fun) clothing. I busted tail to get to the eye place before it closed. I happily walked in and there was a different Eye Girl than the one that helped me on Wednesday.

“I’m here to pick up my glasses.”

“Here you go, Weetabix.”

She hands me a pair of tortoise shell DKNYs with a chartreuse backing. “These aren’t them,” I said, profounding her with my grammatical acumen. “Mine are black.”

She checks the order. The order is for Havanna Sage, which is the pair she is holding in her hand. She starts looking through the racks of frames, searching for the black set. I walked immediately over to the locked DKNY turnstile, pointed to my frames and said “These are my frames.” This seemed to convince her that I wasn’t just making it up, having buyer’s remorse and stuff. She then tried to convince me that with my coloring, I probably wanted the tortoise shell rather than the black frames anyway. Um. No. But the black ones are making more of a statement, she countered. I didn’t care. Did she think I was buying Drew Carey frames to be subtle????

So I left empty-handed. They have to order the correct frames.

Then I went to my niece Abigail’s Christmas pageant, which was cute and adorable beyond words. When I was three, I played the Virgin Mary in our Christmas pageant. One of my lines had the word “Centaurians” in it. I don’t think I’ve ever quite gotten over it, the sense that I am God’s chosen vessel. Vessel for what, I’m not sure… maybe for cute kicky black DKNY eyeglasses.

Abby was Angel Abby. Her line was “And God made a promise”. A far cry from whatever it was I said that had the word “Centaurian” in it. At one point I waved at her onstage and she waved back. If that doesn’t just make a person melt into a big Christmas puddle right there, they’ve just got to be a robot.

I returned to Casa Weetabix, where my driveway was filled with the cars of various of our man friends. The call for Assistance With Tools had apparently gone out. Inside, they struggled with huge pieces of drywall. At one point, someone farted. It was a very testosterone filled day at Casa Weetabix. To counteract, I watched my tape of the Buffy musical again while painting my nails.

At 6:00 pm, I offered to go to a far-away but extremely delicious pizza place to pick up a large pizza to feed our tool-wielding minions, but Esteban declined, as they were all going to see Phil’s band again and he’d just feed them there… besides our kitchen was covered in dust and there would be nowhere for everyone to sit and eat said delicious far away pizza. I grumbled a bit, however, because that meant that I wasn’t going to get the delicious far away pizza either.

I hopped back in my car and drove with Cheri, who was there to chaperone her husband (who is sometimes a scary force when he has tools), to pick up the Christmas pageant pictures (which I will post if I have any sort of motivation a bit later today) and get myself something to eat.

I decided upon Fazolis. Now, if you don’t have a Fazolis near you, it’s basically fast food Italian. They have various pastas and various sauces all sitting in steam tables and they give you whichever combination that you order. It’s certainly not excellent dining, but it’s not terrible and their breadsticks kick ass. If they didn’t have such good breadsticks, I doubt that I’d eat there.

I drive through the drivethrough and order Spaghetti Marinara and a garden salad with french dressing, which comes with two breadsticks. Then we pull up to the window.

The cashier comes to the window.

“$4.73”

I hand her a five. She disappears. For what was literally five minutes. Cheri laughed. I made a joke about them waiting for the water to boil.

Eventually, she came back to the window with my food, in one bag, and handed it to me. Now, that was a bit strange in itself, because normally, they package the salad separate from the hot stuff, being that lettuce will get all wilty and gross if you get it terribly warm.

I can tell that the breadsticks are missing, however, so I ask the girl “Are there breadsticks in here?”

“Oh, you wanted them?” She disappeared again. I went to hand the bag to Cheri and then realized that the cover of the plate inside the bag hadn’t been put on tightly and now the entire contents had slid of the plate. I was now holding a bag of loose sauced hot pasta.

Fazoli Girl returned with my two breadsticks and I handed her the bag full of spilled pasta, saying “The cover wasn’t on this tight and it spilled.”

Without a word, she takes the bag (and the breadsticks) back and disappears again. Cheri is laughing at me at this point, telling me that I just shouldn’t go to drive-throughs.

I was trying very hard to be kind at that point. I have sort of a reverse stereotype going on and it’s probably not healthy. She was a fat chick and I am always easier on fat chicks. In general, fat chicks aren’t complete tards. We just can’t get away with stupidity. Society already thinks we suck because of the size of our asses, thus Social Darwinism makes sure that fat girls are always on the ball. A cute blonde chick with big hooters can afford to act stupid and get away with it. I’m thinking that if she had been a skinny chick, or even worse, a cute blonde with big hooters, I would have been acting snotty and imperious already. But I wasn’t. Because I figured she was a kindred spirit and if you can’t get some slack from your sister, who are you going to get slack from?

She returns, empty handed. “We’re outta da marinara sauce… would you rather have meat sauce… otherwise we’ll have to make you da marinara sauce.”

Now honestly, if I had RATHER had the meat sauce, I would have ORDERED the meat sauce, as it is generally greasy and a little scary, but I played out the scene in my head. If I demand the marinara, they will either spit in my food OR take the bag of spilled spaghetti and dump it back on a plate because I know already that she DOESN’T want to ‘make’ more marinara sauce…. regardless of the fact that ‘making marinara’ probably involves opening a can and microwaving for two minutes.

“Meat sauce is fine.” I said. Cheri laughed hysterically.

She returns and hands me another bag. Through the plastic bag, I can see spilled sauce on the inside.

“What’s this?” I ask, pointing to it.

“Oh, that’s just a little marinara sauce from the salad. Is that alright? Or do you want that I should get you a new one?”

“I want a new one”… because generally, I like crisp cold salads, not hot, wilted, sauced salads. I’m funny that way.

She returns with another salad. At this point, we had been at the window for fourteen minutes. She hands it to me and then says “Do you want….. oh, nevermind.”

“What?” I asked, expecting her to offer my money back. At this point, the Fat Girl Slack had been completely used up and she was well into “Pissing Weetabix Off” territory.

“Well, normally, if you want, I could give you a free cookie… if you want.”

“I want.” I didn’t really want. Their cookies taste like dog biscuits. But at that point, I was a little testy.

She bent down out of sight then returned.

“We’re out of cookies.”

I shook my head in disbelief.

“If you want… I could give you some chocolate cheesecake… since we’re out of cookies.”

She offered this as though it were a great reward, up there with myrrh and gold. A slice of their prefab cheesecake costs $1.29.

“Sure.” I said. She handed me the cheesecake.

“Here you go…. though just so you know… we don’t normally do that and all… give free stuff away… but because it was my fault.”

I sat there staring at her. I honestly think she expected me to thank her for her graciousness, to extol the virtues of Fazolis as being a kind and gentle fast food emporium, to offer my gratitude for the boon that was a $1.29 piece of pre-fab cheesecake.

Instead, I pulled away, screaming to no one in particular (ok, well, to Cheri) “S-O-R-R-Y??!?! Is that so hard to say?!? Sorry, Ma’am, I’m a complete and utter tool and I can’t even manage to get premade pasta on a dish and then a little Prego over the top?! I’m sorry that Fazoli is Italian for ‘Hire Dumb Fucks’! I’m sorry that you almost wore your dinner or got it all over your car and that I gave you a salad covered in sauce and then expected you to eat it!?!”

When I got home, my shit was lukewarm. Except for the salad, which managed to retain the heat of the spaghetti quite nicely.

Next time, it’s McDonald’s. I don’t care how bad it is for me… I don’t usually pop a blood vessel at McDonald’s.
