Lost

One of Esteban’s cousins has been missing for several months and we had to attend his funeral today.

It’s a weird story, actually. He was living in Alaska, with his wife and children, doing something militaristic I guess. He got into a fight with his wife, got on his 4-wheeler and drove off. Never to be seen again.

What is even more bizarre: in 1996, I wrote a short story about a woman in Alaska whose husband goes off to take pictures in the woods and is never seen again.

No body. No vehicle. No evidence that he even existed at all.

It gives me the chills thinking about it.

Now, I had never met this cousin, being that he lived in Alaska, but his parents were at our wedding. The Waterford crystal vase his mother gave me for my bridal shower sits in my bedroom. Still, it was one of the strangest funerals I’d ever been to. In everyone’s mind, still the question remained, even though the overnight temperature in Alaska is negative 20 or lower, is it possible he would show up, unscathed? Where was he? Almost a group mental picture existed, the vision of his body lying broken, underneath the hulk of 4-wheeler, the certainty that maybe twenty years in the future, someone would find the rusted 4-wheeler and maybe a hint of bone or shadow of the man which was once there and his picture would then be trotted out and splayed over the newscasts, with a pat grin from the newscaster with the segue “Well, there’s another mystery that can now be laid to rest… how’s the weather looking, Jim?”

Stupidly, I went without a tissue and sat there crying, surrounded by Esteban’s family who certainly must have thought me insane, since I’ve never met him. I just kept looking at his wife, who was doing spectacularly, considering the circumstances. Whenever I’d see her lift a tissue to her eyes, I’d get even more sad. Then, of course, Esteban noticed that I had big tears rolling down my face and had to try to comfort me, which just made it worse. I can usually hang tough and keep it together until someone offers sympathy… then I lose it. I’m certain it all has to deal with the repressed WASP tendancies I have. Esteban’s family is different… 100% Catholic and very adept at concealing their emotions. We Lutherans have only been at this for six hundred years… we’re neophytes at the suppression. We just go to pieces if someone sees us crying or hears us peeing. Luckily, before we went, I had Esteban pick me up a little pack of those Listerine Oral Care strips, so I popped another of them into my mouth and I was able to compose myself.

Afterwards, we went to the basement of the adjacent parochial school, where we dined upon a potluck provided by the Ladies Auxillary.

There is something inherantly wonderful about food which is served in church basements in bowls with ladies names written on masking tape “Mrs. John Mueller”… “Mrs. Cletus Daanen”. I highly doubt that Martha Stewart could cook a finer meal than the one we had on Chinet plates in the basement, which smelled strangely of industrial cleaner and had the school physical education records along the walls.

I have a stomach full of church lady food right now. It’s a glorious thing. For all the sushi and cassoulets and such I adore, I don’t think I’ve had a finer meal in months.

So, as sad as it was, it was also strangely full of release and a certain sense closure for their family. I’m sure that the question will remain for everyone, though, until the day we know for certain.

Sacred Hearts and neck boils

The other day, I had an eye doctor appointment.

I actually have fairly good eyesight. My previous position killed my eyesight, as I was looking at microscopic 5 pt. Computer printouts and a hideous black mainframe monitor. Now, I have a gigantic pc monitor and work completely in Office products. But I like to wear glasses. I feel cute in them’. As though I immediately gained several I.Q. points and may have gone to Vanderbilt or Harvard rather than the good old University of Wisconsin, may regularly read Utne Reader (which I do, actually, but I just don’t look like I do) instead of the National Enquirer (which I sometimes read as well, for all the news that’s cheaper than buying comic books), might drink natural Australian spring water rather than Diet Coke from McDonald’s.

My normal cool eye doctor guy is no longer in our insurance plan, so I made an appointment at a new guy. Well, he’s not exactly new. He was old. Like 840 years old. And missing a finger. And wearing a little lapel button with a picture of Jesus Christ on it, looking startlingly effeminate and displaying his heart on the outside of his chest.

I’ve never really understood that look. I guess it runs in His family, though, because sometimes I see pictures of his Mom with the exposed heart as well. Maybe having your heart on the outside of your body is a genetic thing? You’d think it would be kind of gross though. Airbags would pose a problem as well, I would think. But then, Jesus, being all 0 B.C. and all, probably didn’t have to worry about it much.

But I mused about the implications of having an optometrist who was attracted to the whole Inside Out Jesus thing. It was almost like having X-Ray vision. I tried to make a Margaret Atwood-esque metaphor out of that, because I’m reading The Blind Assassin right now and am prone to gross copying of her style whenever I read her stuff, but I’m just not talented enough to make the Atwood metaphorical leap. Besides, I think she did that one already in Cat’s Eye.

Dr. Old directed me to put my face in a machine. ‘Is it going to blow air in my eyes?’ I asked.

‘No.. this is to see what kind of prescription we might give you, but we will be testing the pressure of your eye for glaucoma later.’

‘No you won’t. I don’t want it.’

‘Well, how would you know if you had glaucoma then? You’ll have to sign a release!’

I sighed. My previous cool YOUNG eye doctor never blew the air in my eyes. He never lectured me. Hence, he was cool. I felt like saying ‘Look, you go ahead and blow a jet of air into my eyeball if you’ll let me kick you in your prunes with my Doc Martens, ok?’

But I didn’t. Because I’m certain he would have been most confused with the ‘prunes’ term, thinking maybe I meant the Sunsweets he had undoubtedly eaten for breakfast. Besides, I’m not that nasty, even to mean old eye doctor’s with exposed Messiah hearts on their lapels.

‘I’ll sign the release.’ I said.

He grimaced at me, griped at me and then proceeded to give me the most incredibly bored and disinterested eye exam I’ve ever received. Don’t get me wrong: I don’t derive pleasure from hearing ‘Which is better’ one or two’ one or two’ repeated five million times while I try frantically to decide which is better, having the V in the top row blurry or having the E in the lower row look like a 3.

Then he went to shine the little light thing into my eye. And he dropped the thing. I almost made a ‘Oooh, be careful’ you break it, you bought it’ remark but as I was a glaucoma pariah, felt it wouldn’t have been taken in the jovial manner in which it was intended. It was a good thing’ because he did break it. And spent no less than thirty minutes trying to replace the bulb inside it. In silence. Then he disappeared. And it was hot in there. Old people hot. Then he returned, set his freshly-fixed instrument down only to have it roll off the table AND FALL ON THE DAMN FLOOR AGAIN!

And it broke again. Thus we began the second round. In silence. Listening to him grunt and try to unscrew this fragile instrument with his three fingers, watching his Open Heart Jesus bob frantically on his lapel.

Finally, he got the thing figured out, wrote me my prescription and I fled to the safety of the waiting room to pick out my frames. His collection seemed to be assembled from the Fugly school of eyeglasses. Think Trailer Park circa 1978. Those big moony frames from the 80’s, with the purple shading on the top’ the kinds girls used to put tiny heart stickers in the corners.

I made up an excuse about having chest pains and seeing a bright light and fled. I tried to go to my cool eye doctor’s place, but he had moved. I spent the next hour trying to remember where it was that he had relocated to, finally finding it an hour later.

I walked into his new office. An Armani display to my left, a Ralph Lauren display to my right’ Raybans ahead. I sighed. I was home.

I spent a fun thirty minutes trying a bunch of funky frames and ended up with a pair of oblong DKNY black frames. They make me look funky and cool. I’ve always wanted semi-ugly frames that would, hopefully, make my face look pretty and delicate in contrast. We’ll see. The only downer was that I had to actually pay for them myself rather than allowing my insurance to cover it. I don’t care.

I’m really that vain.

Last night, I decided that I loved Brandon on Survivor, which is pretty much like a kiss of death for any player. Damn that Mark Burnett. Tweaks my emotions like a cheap pull toy! Damn him all to hell!

But I have to say, I just loved Brandon’s whole hard ass routine with Frank. I sort of love Frank a little bit too’ which undoubtedly means that it will soon be his time to go. Frank is a Talking Rudy Doll if there ever was one. I keep waiting for him to say ‘I was with a queer who ran around bare assed half the time.’ I do think Tom needs close captioning’. Maybe his corn meal mush had fermented or something but I think he was channeling MushMouth from Fat Albert in last night’s episode. I was rather disappointed that he didn’t manage to sneak a glimpse of his anal cleft in last night, but maybe with the in-depth coverage of his neck boil, that was deemed enough Grosser Side of Tom for one sixty-minute episode during the family hour.

Ladies and Gentlemen’ the Tiffany channel at its finest.

Now with 50% fewer calories and fat!

So, I’ve been half-heartedly attempting to lose part of my ass.

Not the cute part. Don’t freak on me. Just the gross, bulbous, “I’m turning into Ethel the Lunch Lady whose polyester Lunch Lady uniform squeaks when she walks because her thighs are rubbing together like Keith and Colby trying to start a fire while Jerri plays her bongo inneffectively” part.

I decided that Monic@ Lewinsky had it easy.

Jenny Cr@ig was going to give her $10,000 PER POUND that she lost, or some other unbelievable sum like that. That’s a lot of money. I could earn enough to pay off my student loan after a couple of days…. or maybe even after eating a rousing meal of Esteban’s hot pork.

Now you know why I put the asterisks in her name, right? Because I didn’t want to get googled off of “hot pork” and “Monic@ Lew1nsky”. That stuff gives me the willies. The time I got hit off the search “wet boy scout underpants” I couldn’t sleep for a week, I tell you.

Anywhoo, if someone would offer my that kind of ching, I think I could lose my ass. Or at least a good part of it.

So I mentioned this to Esteban. And he knows I’ve always wanted to go to Disneyland. Bad. In the worst kind of way. Because I had a horrible childhood and never got to go to Disneyland or DisneyWorld or even Stumpy’s Animal Petting Zoo of Hwy 32 (turn before you get to the Dump).

So he makes me an offer. If I get to half my goal, we will go to Disneyland. Or World. Whichever one is in Florida… I always get confused.

And then he upped the ante: if I met my goal, we’d go to Europe.

Now, before Esteban starts to get hate mail about not loving his wife for the round chubby sex goddess that she is, he does. Believe me, he does. More than enough. Sometimes innappropriately, in fact. He’s quite happy with me just the way I am.

I just want to be to the point I was at when I met him, when I was nineteen. I was still a curvy round sex goddess. Just less of one. I hate the fact that I look at pictures of myself then and think “Look at you! You were so cute! Why did you hate yourself so much!?! Why did you think that you were a big fat piece of shit?!?! You were awesome and cute and adorable!” So maybe I just want a chance to appreciate it a little. And maybe I hate being 30 and want to be 20 again. Who knows.

Anyway, I’ve been half-heartedly on a diet for about two weeks. I got all excited and thought I was starting to lose weight, so I went to the doctor to weigh myself (because it is NOT a good idea for me to have a scale in the house as I will obsess about it for hours and weigh myself five times a day, otherwise).

I had gained a pound.

(insert face dead of emotion, full of weltschmerz here)

Oh. Boy.

So after weeks of eating miniscule amounts of food, I fucking gained a pound.

But the thing is that I think that I’ve lost weight some how. Or at least some ass. I keep lifting up my shirt, looking at my gut, feeling the hips that are shrinking.

I actually went up to someone at work and did that. “Look at my gut! Is there less gut here than there was last week? Look! Look at my gut! Hey! Where are you going! I’m serious! Look at it! Stop walking so fast!”

Esteban commented that he thought I had lost some weight. Mo commented that as well. No one else though.

(sigh)

I hate this. I hate the fact that my genes want nothing more than to cling to my decades of poor food and exercise choices. I hate that trying to lose weight is such a stereotype. I hate those thin people who say “If you put your mind to it, you can do it!” Yeah, well, if YOU put your mind to it, maybe you can envision what I’m thinking you should stick very snuggly up your ass.

Ok. I’m a little cranky.

I think it’s actually all the fault of McDonald’s. Because I am so addicted to their Diet Coke, it makes it very easy to order a Sausage and Egg Biscuit in the morning (17 points on the Weight Watchers plan… most people get 24-30 points a day). I tried quiting cold McTurkey, but it just wasn’t happening. I crave the bubbly stuff too much. So then I tried doing an Egg McMuffin in the morning (10 points on the WW plan) but then the scale told me that I had gained a McPound, so I stopped that. Now I’ve been ordering a plain english muffin with jelly. I may be ready to chew my arm off, but I hope it’s working. I mean, UncleBob is on his way to becoming one svelte mutha. I can do this too.

Of course, the migraine helped a lot. That was good for several days of eating very little.

I’ve also being trying to eat a lot of Campbell’s soup. I’ve found that I am fairly full if I have a can of Chicken & Stars (yes, I am four years old, shut up!) or a can of Tomato Soup with Pepperidge Farm goldfish crackers swimming in it (shut UP!!!) and a glass of skim milk. That seems to do the trick, pretty much. Now, a general can of soup has more sodium in it than your average shaker of salt, but I’m living with that.

Maybe I’ll do for Campbell’s what Jarad did for Subway.

Except I wouldn’t let them film a bunch of stupid commercials where I’m walking around to horrible music with my over-inflated lips sticking out and surreal people doing yoga.

Just a normal night at Chez Weetabix

Chelsea: Meow! Merow! Maow! Mraow!

Weetabix: She doesn’t do that to MY warning finger. She listens to MY warning finger.

Esteban: That’s because you’ve got a mean warning finger.

Weetabix: I do not! I have an authoritative warning finger. It’s not an unjust finger. She knows that your warning finger isn’t going to follow through’ whereas my warning finger will.

Still keeping the lights down low

Below is the entry I had written yesterday with the impending migraine’

I made a grave mistake last night. I had my little heart set on grilled pork tenderloin and garlic roasted potatoes, but by the time I had gotten home, I had tossed the potato idea out the window because it was too much work and too much time. Then I thrust the responsibility of making the tenderloins upon Esteban, who was feeling churlish and didn’t want to light the grill. Do them in the oven then, fine’ how hard was that? We have a spice blend whose sole purpose of existence is to make pork tenderloin taste oh-so-wonderful. That’s what it does. Grill it or bake it, you can’t screw up with that spice blend. It’s foolproof.

But not Esteban-proof.

When I went back into the kitchen, Esteban had placed the pork tenderloin medallions in the very largest lasagna pan we own. Then he had covered them with a blizzard of the pork tenderloin spice and what was possibly the largest amount of mushrooms ever assembled. There was something like four inches of mushrooms. It was sitting in brownish juice slurry.

‘What’s that?’ I asked, peeved.

‘Pork chops!’ Esteban replied.

‘What’s that stuff it’s in?’ I asked, mentally replaying the instructions I gave him ‘lightly sprinkle pork rub over them and pop in oven for thirty minutes’ wondering which word sounded like ‘mushroom’ or ‘pork soup’.

‘It’s mushroom juice.’ By mushroom juice, I believe he was referring to the salty chemical broth that they package the mushrooms in. ‘Fine’ don’t eat it then.’

We have this argument every six months or so. It’s my fault, really. I’m a control freak with the food prep. When I am hungry for pork tenderloin, I want it done a certain way, describable in the words ‘seasoned’ rather than ‘coated in black pepper’, ‘simple’ rather than ‘au fungi’, ‘moist’ rather than ‘swimming in stuff that should have been dumped down the drain’. Esteban endeavors to be creative, to feel like a chef, to be lauded for his culinary skills, but he has, unfortunately, had some singularly disastrous results.

I had already said far too much. A smart woman does not crush her husband’s attempt at housework because she’s a perfectionist. Obviously, I’m not a smart woman.

Just the same, I prepared myself some peas’ as a contingency plan.

When I took the first bite of Pork Loin Au Esteban, the top of my head shot off and satanic fire came shooting out of my nostrils.

‘Pepper much?’ I asked him as I returned to the kitchen for a large, nay ginormous, glass of icy cold skim milk.

Esteban looked shocked. ‘No! No! I swear! I just used that stuff you said’. And a little ground black pepper.’ He made the motions of grinding our fancy schmancy pepper grinder’ motions that were the equivalent of peppering every Cesar Salad served at Red Lobster until the advent of the next millennia.

‘It’s a little hot, that’s all.’ I said, trying to soften my tendencies to be a harpy fishwife.

He took a bite and then made the face which indicates that his throat had involuntarily closed upon itself and said ‘No more if you’re going to be giving me THAT shit!’.

‘Holy cow! It is hot!’ He then apologized profusely and I tried not to be grumpy about the forty-two cans of mushrooms and three pounds of pork loin he’d used while creating his experiment in nuclear fusion.

I ate one medallion’ and three glasses of milk. Thank god for peas.

Don’t get me wrong’ Esteban is actually a very good cook at what he does, but he has the notion that ‘If some is good, more is better’ which is great if you’re talking about Russell Crowe, sex, or chocolate, but bad when you’re talking about pepper, Carrot Top the comedian, or the vocal stylings of Ms. Yoko Ono.

‘. And that’s when I went home with the migraine. So there it is.

So the migraine.

The sucky ‘I hate breathing’ migraine.

The god awful ‘A Bullet-Wouldn’t-Hurt-Any-Less’ migraine.

The fucking ‘Put my head in a vise and eviscerate me, hanging me by my bloody entrails rather than endure this head trauma another second’ migraine.

Ahem.

I went home early yesterday, got my comfy boxer shorts on, found some of my very favorite thermal socks and put them on, even though I only had one red one and one black one, and topped it off with an extremely fuzzy fleece sweatshirt. Then I curled up in bed for about fifteen minutes until I got entirely nauseous. Then I sat at my computer, in the dark, with the brightness of the monitor turned down low, and played the soundtrack of The Last of the Mohicans and Shakespeare In Love and the Etoys theme song, which seemed to make it feel better. 1940’s jazz, which is my perennial favorite, did not. Something about cymbals made me want to hurl.

I’ve only had migraines for about three years and luckily, only get them about four or five times a year. I’m fairly lucky, as I can more or less function with them. I have a friend who once had to be carried, drooling and incapacitated, from Olive Garden where their hospitaliano apparently didn’t extend toward migraine services. She doesn’t remember it.

I was supposed to go to Quilting class but there was no way I would be able to withstand starring at little seams in a brightly lit room with the sound of sewing machines whirring around me. I’d bite someone’s hand off, of that I am certain. Or wound them with my rotary cutter.

At 6:30 pm, Esteban came home. Apparently, it freaked him out to see a completely dark house, yet my car was in the driveway. He opened the door ‘WEETABIX??!?!?!!’ and flipped on the lights. At that point, Chelsea started her insane meowing and a John Phillips Sousa marching band began their rousing rendition of ‘Stars and Stripes Forever’ inside my head, complete with roundabouts and kick steps.

turn off the light please! I have a migraine and it will make me throw up and please stop the cat from meowing before I throw her out the window!’ I whispered.

‘Oh,’ Esteban said, whispering, but still incredibly too loud.

you can’t turn on any lights in the house and I don’t want to talk and you can’t turn on the tv or stereo’ it just needs to be dark and quiet’ with no movement’ and no food smells’.so you can’t cook anything.’

‘Ok, I’ll go out and get something. Do you want anything?’ He complied.

no! no! I’ll puke! I can’t think about food’ I can’t look at food’. If you go out and get something, you can’t eat it here!’

So basically, I chased my husband out of the house. I was a big meanie. I didn’t care. My head hurt.

I spent the rest of the night catching up on the MightyBigTV archives, including the hilarious ‘Ed’ recaps.

I think, however, that I may be onto something. The Migraine Diet should have me svelte in no time. Nothing but water and Advil (for a little roughage). Patent pending.

Parts of this diary just got hit from someone searching on Google for Weetabix ass splinter. No shit. I have arrived. My ass splinter is now the stuff of Google infamy. On a side note: someone from Appleton, Wi, using Ameritech isp reads this site seemingly regularly…. send me an email and reveal yourself!

Turn off the lights please

I had this whole entry written about how Esteban screwed up a bunch of pork tenderloin last night but I had to flee work with a hella migraine.

So now here I sit, in the dark, listening to the Etoy’s theme song over and over because it sort of makes my head feel better. With no humorous “Esteban shouldn’t be allowed to operate the peppermill unsupervised” entry. Because it’s on one of my pc’s at work.

If you’re disappointed, try humming that Etoys song (Oooooh OOOOOOOOOh Ooooooh). It might make you feel better.

Migraines suck. For all involved.

Dear Owen Meany,

You’ve ruined me for all men.

Weetabix

Dear John Irving,

You’ve ruined me for all authors… except maybe Margaret Atwood.

Oh, and tell me the truth… The Fourth Hand is really just a gigantic shout out to ME, isn’t it. Isn’t it. You can tell me.

Weetabix

Dear McDonald’s

They say that everyone has just a little McDonald’s inside of them.

I think your Diet Coke makes up 15% of my body.

Yup, still your bitch,
Weetabix

Girl… you’ll be a shiny object seeking racoon soon…

I think women are raccoons or something.

What is it with our fascination with small shiny objects?

Jewelry. I love jewelry. Diamonds. Diamonds are a Weetabix’s best friend.

Rubies aren’t bad either. I’d take a ruby any day.

Following this logic, we should be attracted to fishing lures to. Bait shops should be magnets for women, we should be gathering and ooohing around Rapalas, spinners and gigs.

Before I started golfing, on Saturday mornings, I used to watch fishing shows. Jim Bucher and the like. I think I was attracted to the fact that these men swim in testosterone the way that an expensive glittery department store makeup counter oozes in estrogen. I would stare wide-eyed at them, sticking their BARE HANDS inside the gills of LIVING WALLEYES! Man, it was almost too much.

One time, Markus and I went fishing while we were camping at Manitowish Waters. I was feeling all studly. I was twenty four years old and I had my Snoopy fishing rod.

So we started casting. And casting. And casting. We changed our bait. I started using worms, which were entirely gross, but I was trying very hard to be butch. I kept losing my worm because I wasn’t properly setting the hook. I didn’t know what a strike felt like. All around us, 60 pound muskelunges were jumping out of the water, mocking us.

Then, as I was reeling in yet another ridiculous fruitless cast, as my lure was just about to break the water two feet off the boat, a FURIOUS STRIKE! I started to scream!!! ‘OH MY GOD!!! MARKUS!!!! ACKKK!!!’

It was the northern Wisconsin equivalent of a goldfish or guppy. It’s mouth was actually too small to even get onto the hook. It chomped the worm and was gone.

The anglers surrounding our boat all peered over to see who got a hook caught in their eye or testicle or something.

Nope. Just Weetabix and her two-inch trophy fish that got away.

I spent the rest of the day in the boat making a bracelet out of spinners from Markus’ tacklebox.

Pretty shiny things again.

I am frightened by the machines that endlessly spin hotdogs at gas stations.

I’ll bet Joe Bucher the Fishing Guy on TV eats them, though.

My name this weekend should have been Crabby McGrouchyPants. I’ve been owly all weekend and it’s no one’s fault but my own.

Today, I don’t even look like myself. My hair is all wacky because I slept on it wet. Instead of being kinder, gentler foofy hair, it’s hard-ass Pulp Fiction ‘Don’t Mess With Me I’ll Cut You, Man!’ kind of hair. I’m exacerbating the look by wearing mostly all black and my Skank Ho seriously red lipstick. It kind of gives me a ‘She drinks the blood of her victims’ look.

I look seriously tough, I’m telling you.

People better just call me MS. McGrouchyPants. Or I might just have to wield my Circle of Death quilting scissors.

Which is also very pretty and shiny.

Another boring picture entry

So Esteban and I went to Joel and Cheri’s fantabulous annual Christmas Party. This is the first time they’ve entertained in their new mansion… er, house… and it was a spectacular party. For twenty one guests, the menu included: four whole tenderloins, one turkey, one ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, rolls, and a plethora of appetizers, including (because I’ve undoubtedly forgotten some) baked brie with roasted garlic, some sundried tomato pastry thing, half a smoked salmon, a school of shrimp cocktail, a fruited pavlova, more brie, various sausages, cheeses, crackers, veggies, cookies and the like, taffy apple salad, cranberry something jello-y thing, and an oodle of various Christmas candies.

I faired pretty well, as I hadn’t eaten anything all day I expected to hoover up everything in sight. I pretty much stuck with the salmon, shrimp and fruit salad because I am a whore for merangue. I was in a bit of a grumpy mood, however, because I spent at least 20 minutes putzing on my hair, to emerge from the bathroom with what Esteban called “the look of studied messiness”. Whatever. Bastard.

Then we had the White Elephant gift exchange. In case you are unfamiliar with this concept, the guests bring wrapped items which, theorhetically they have received from previous years… things which are no longer wanted or, hopefully, so godawful that they long to get rid of them. The hope is that “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”, but most of the time, the hope is to screw your friend over with a truly awful item. Last year, Beth received a disassembled bicycle in a box. Scott received a mosquito net hat, some fruity smelling lotion and a Victoria’s Secret catalog (I figured it was all sort of a camping theme there…stuff to do in the woods and all).

This year, our two gifts were a yellow purple and green clock I had received free from an office supply company back when I used to manage the homeless shelter AND a teapot shaped like a pig. Pork Tea Pig is his name. My mother actually bought that and presented it to me several years back, conveniently forgetting that she had told me the story about finding that pig in a swanky department store, marked down four hundred percent, because no swanky person in their right mind wants to drink hot tea coming out of the snout of a pig, much like boiling pig snot. Go figure. Esteban has been pressuring me to White Elephant it ever since. This year I relented.

I ended up with an actually very nice little porcelian espresso set and Esteban got a box full of strange stuff including a dull set of hedge clippers, four feet of green garden fencing, and some ridiculous mock software, which he intends to put up in his computer lab.

A good time was had by all. However, I stupidly was drinking Diet Pepsi and was wired to the max when we left at 11:30, then stayed up until 3:00 in the morning. Bad Weetabix. Esteban is still sleeping, having gone to bed two hours before me.

Because I liked how the previous entry looked so much, I thought I’d fill the rest of this page with pictures as well. These are all from the party last night.

This is Phil (the guy with the band whom I occaisionally write about), Cheri, and Scott. You can also see Michuru poking his head up in the background between Scott and Cheri.

God watches as Matt and Beth unwrap Beth’s birdcage and Soccer Santa (a statue of Santa kicking a soccer ball). Joel is in the background with apparently a halo…. must have been earned cooking such an incredible spread.

And yes, god help us, that IS a snowman wearing a Cheesehead and donning a “Go Packers” sign.

This is a rather artistic shot by Markus of my very good friend Kim unwrapping what turned out to be dozens of used florist vases. Joe sits next to her with his gift, a vacuum cleaner which smells like burning rubber when it runs.

Here’s me with one of my very favorite people in the whole world, Markus. And, actually, the only person to ever write a guest entry on this here page. I’m wearing my Slutty Ho lipstick… probably a bit over the top, but I think I carried it off nicely… and maybe it helps distract a little from that double chin action I’ve got going on there.

The beauty that is the World’s Best Pair of Socks!!!! Also, notice the shoelaces kindly sent to me by Bfee! Woohoo!!! Love the combo. Happy Feet!

It’s not how long it is… it’s how you use it

A very short entry for words, but long on graphics today, as Esteban and I are prepping to go to what will likely be one of many holiday bashes this year.

Ok. Who am I kidding? It will likely be one of one holiday bash this year.

Anywhoo, I picked up a long awaited set of films from the developer and I thought I’d share a few pictures with you.

This is an angel statue in the old section of a local cemetary. Notice the big nasty spider on it? I didn’t until after I took the picture…. bluh!!!!

This is a NEW sculpture in the same cemetary… I think she’s copper or bronze, but the light was hitting her just right, coming off the river with a golden sort of intensity, that she just glowed and I couldn’t resist.

My niece Abigail.

Not all girls are sugar and spice… at least not in MY family.
