This is your brain… this is your brain on estrogen

Throcky compared me to Molly Ivins. I did not know who she was, so I had to look her up. She’s funny. If you don’t know who Molly Ivins is either, you can check her out here

I’m really getting sick of these little “in-jokes” about how men don’t understand women. This entry is for those men. Or women. Or whatever.

You know who you are.

If a girl farts in front of you, she’s either going to be very embarassed or it’s not a big deal. If you just got to know her and it’s not a big deal, then either she’s very comfortable with you OR she’s a big slob who farts in front of all people and she doesn’t care either.

For the first six months of our relationship, I had Esteban utterly convinced that women did not go poo.

Ever.

Today, however, we have farting contests. We constantly tease each other about our poo. “My, that was foul, dear, are you sure that you haven’t died?” “Want me to blow you a kiss?”

This is a sign. A very important sign. I know someone at work who has been living with her boyfriend for a year and does not go to the bathroom in their home. If for this reason alone, their relationship is doomed for failure.

This is not to say that you should watch each other poo. There are some boundaries which should never be crossed.

Likewise, bathing suit shopping should be a private affair. Trust me on this one. Dying, pooping and shopping for bathing suits… these are roads to be traveled solo.

Girls are just boys who are subjected to incredibly strict societal rules. We are not allowed to shout, fart, poop, pee too fast, argue, burp, have eye crud, ear wax, scratch, or anything which might be masculine. We are allowed to cry or faint and have babies. In a feminine way.

So what do we want? I of course can’t speak for all women, but I know what I want.

I want people to stop lumping me in a group of “women”. Just because I have a uterus does not mean that I’ll automatically have something in common with another woman other than the hole between our legs and the need to bleed every 28 days. Doesn’t even mean that I’ll necessarily like her.

I want someone to come up with a better bra. The same design since the 1800’s! That’s crazy talk, people! My shoulders and my breasts have nothing to do with each other, there’s no reason that the former should hurt because that latter are so big. And I shouldn’t need to spend half my day either pulling my bra strap down in the back to hoist the girls back up OR fixing straps which have slipped off my shoulders.

I want to be able to have my period in a couple of hours, rather that spreading it out over 4-6 days. I want to go to a salon of some sort and have a woman named Helga push on my stomach and be done with it in one easy albeit messy afternoon. And no cramps. Cramps are bullshit. They serve no biological purpose whatsoever. “Hey, you’re not pregnant! Look at you! You’re not pregnant!” It makes no sense.

I want to get paid what I’m worth. I want employers to NOT assume that because I don’t have a child I will be getting pregnant in the near future.

I want feminism to stop being an ISM. I want it to be LIFE.

I want hair to grow faster in the winter when it’s cold, not the summer when it’s hot. I have to shave my legs every day in the summer and it makes me mad.

I want men to take care of their feet. In general, men’s feet are grody.

I want society to think that a bare face on a woman is beautiful.

I want women to not feel so weird about talking about sex that there has to be a show about women talking about sex. There is no “Sex in the City” about men for a reason.

I want to NOT be questioned by male callers with technical issues who ask if I know what I’m talking about or if I’ve had any experience with this before. Yes. That’s why you’re calling me, bozo.

Likewise, I want Hallmark stores, minivans, Light Salad Dressing, panty hose, and the fact that 99% of birth control is the responsibility of the woman to go away.

I want trucks with “No Fat Chicks” on them to be blown up.

I want readers to finish reading this and not automatically think “Feminazi” or any other slur.

I want advertisers during sporting events to not automatically assume that their viewers are all male. I want the sports bars around here to start hiring male servers.

I want people to offer congratulations to a man when he has a baby. I want the phrase “he had a baby” not seem like a physical impossibility and more like a reality. “They had a baby” should be said rather than “His wife had a baby”.

When I’m assertive, I want to be called “assertive” and not “bitch”.

When I’m sad, I want people to not automatically jump to the conclusion that it’s hormonal.

I want Lifetime for Women to go the hell away.

And I want to stop carrying a purse. I hate purses. I absolutely hate them. But I hate the fact that I have so much stuff to carry that I don’t know what to do with it. I wish it were societally acceptable to have a small pack animal. Like a burro.

This is the true story of seven germs, picked to live in a Weetabix and

have their lives taped… the Germ World Today is more or less back to normal. I’m back at work and doing the “I’m freezing/I’m burning up” thing. God, people are going to think that I’m doing the menopause thing. Next thing you know, I’ll be lying on the floor hugging the toilet because it’s mercifully cool.

Last night, in my Nyquil delirium, I watched bits and pieces of the Real World Reunion. They were all glorifying ‘Real World’ and they even had a professor from Syracuse University who said that watching ‘The Real World’ made you a better citizen or human being or something. If that’s true, it’s by accident, because the only reason I watch is to see twenty-somethings drink way too much or possibly jump into a pool nekkid. Oh, and to feel really old. Because I’m too old to appear on the Real World, except possibly as someone’s disapproving boss or something. Then I’d get to say great lines like ‘That house needs an enema’, like the daycare director in the Boston season.

Not like Bunim-Murray would ever pick Green Bay as a fabulous location for Real World Season 12 or something, but wouldn’t that be funny? Give the Seven Complete Strangers a farm to run? With cows? Make them live in the barn, in the hay loft.

But that would be cruel. To the cows. PETA would be all over their shit when they’d forget to feed the cows or they’d be walking around in poo that’s four feet deep. If the Miami cast couldn’t figure out how to spend $50,000, the Green Bay cast certainly wouldn’t be able to function on a farm. And they’d probably cast another idiot like Puck who’d try to butcher a cow.

I have to add that this reunion was way cooler than my high school reunion. I mean, people were actually dancing. There didn’t seem to be any spouses or strange boyfriend/girlfriends to baby-sit.

Most reunions have those stupid superlatives, so I thought I’d provide the ones for RW:

Most changed: Jon Brennan (LA) looked as though he was the love child of Garth Brooks and Kelsey Grammer. Lindsay (Seattle) was disturbing in her blondeness. The last time I talked with someone who was that energetic, I later learned that they were hooked on cocaine.

Most unchanged: Ruthie (Hawaii) and Flora (Miami). It could be said that the true psychotics are the people who continually do the same things over and over and are surprised when they achieve the same results. Hmmm.

Most disturbing hair: Toss up between Jason (Boston) with his weird page boy thing, Pam (San Francisco) with her Color Me Unimpressed look, and the afore-mentioned Sun-In poster child Lindsay (Seattle).

Too much screen time: Tec (Hawaii). How many times did we need to see ‘R to the E to the A to the L to the Worrrrrrrrrrld, y’all!’ It was like they were filming his rehearsal of this line. Also, who gave Dan (Miami) a microphone? And why? I think Beth A. (LA) got more screen time in the reunion than she did during the entire time she was on the show.

Noticeably absent: Janet (Seattle) might not have showed because she didn’t want to see Jason (Boston) after their ill-fated romance. Irene (Seattle) hasn’t attended even one reunion. Why? I love her kooky spaced out psycho routine. Plus, I sort of hoped she’d smack Steven a little bit. Because I’m sure he wouldn’t have laughed about it. He would have decked her, anger management or not. And speaking of the emotionally unstable, didn’t you half want to see Montana go at it with Amaya?

Biggest Waste of Real World ‘Experience’. Rachel (San Francisco) becoming Sean’s (Boston) brood-mare. Didn’t she go to college? Wasn’t she a political science major or something?

By the way, if I glorified cold medications, I did not intend to. Basically, they have the same alcohol equivalent to a shot of bourbon. So when I say ‘Nyquil’, I really mean ‘booze’. Just so you know.

Ok, I still haven’t fully recovered from the effects of my nasty cold. (Snark sniffle)

My kingdom for a horse or a funny and insightful quote for the diary

I was trying to think of a cool quote to put on this here diary and all I could think of was lines from “The Simpsons” or “Do I make you horny baby? Do I?” from “Austin Powers”.

And that makes me very sad indeed.

And then I got even more sad because I slept through the Simpsons tonight.

Damn Nyquil.

Enough Ny-quil and you start to see Scott Baio in your refrigerator

Oh my god. I feel like warmed over death.

Last night after my bizarre Dyna Girl entry, I took some of Esteban’s happy golden sleep medicine and then went to lay down in our bedroom.

For a little while, I thought I was delirious. I mean, I could hear this bizarre shit music. Who let the dogs out indeed? Then I could hear voices. Amplified voices. I wiped the drool off my face and went back into the office where Esteban was working on an article.

“Do you hear music?”

“Yeah. The neighbors three houses down are having a party.”

I must have spouted a bunch of obscenities at that point but I don’t remember. I’m thinking it must have been bad because Esteban then asks “Do you want me to call the Police?”

And for some reason, I thought he meant Sting, Andrew Summers and Stuart Copeland. And this sounds pretty groovy, but I really want to sleep and I’ve already got noise. I don’t want some kind of Battle of the Bands thing going on.

When I didn’t answer, Esteban continued, “You know, I’ve been outside and it’s not all that loud. It IS only 7:30 p.m., you know.”

God damn Esteban and his logic. I sat down, wrote an email to trinity63 that barely made sense and now she might just think I’m a stoner. And I wouldn’t blame her. But her baby is cute, that wasn’t the drugs talking.

Then I stumbled back into the bedroom and shut the bedroom windows and fell back into bed. At 8:30, Esteban woke me up to make sure that I had not drowned in a pool of my own drool. That’s the bad part of having a stuffed nose, you must sleep with your mouth open. And of course, my mouth now feels as though someone has installed wall-to-wall shag carpeting. Which I hear is coming back in style and I’m not quite understanding this. And that’s not the drugs talking either.

I woke up this morning, feeling as though my head were a circus balloon and a clown was about to shape it into a poodle, so I called in to work sick and went back to bed. Then at 7:15 A.M. this morning, BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ . A chainsaw of some kind. I ended up having a dream that the crazy DJ from three houses down was now putting all the party goers into a chipper shredder. And I was applauding him.

So basically the neighborhood was trying its best to make sure that I did not sleep wonderful restful curative sleep of the gods.

And you know what? With enough cough syrup, you can sleep through anything they throw at you.

BRING IT ON!!! (Weetabix laughs at all who should defy her, waving a bottle of cherry flavored store-brand Ny-quil at them! Bwah ha ha ha!!!)

Oh, and another one of my dreams last night was that I had SIX diaries to update, all with different sets of pseudonyms to prevent Esteban’s friends from finding them. And I was having a hard time keeping all the different pseudonyms straight.

Scott read all 64 entries of this diary last night in the wee hours. And signed the guestbook. See? Doesn’t Scott rock? And he put in a plea to save Joel’s life. Ok, readers, you may stop making fun of Joel willy nilly. I will honor Scott’s request, as he bravely heckled a DJ on Saturday night to save my honor.

And if anyone needs a damp mass of used tissues, let me know. I’m your girl. I’ve got white ones, light blue ones and pink ones. It’s a damp pastel wonderland at the Weetabix household.

Refrain from operating heavy machinery or diaries while taking this medication

Blue Armadillo’s Weblog turned me on to this fabulous site about Electra Woman and Dyna Girl.

Dyna Girl. Can you imagine putting that crap on your resume? Yet at the same time, I covet her name. Dyna Girl. It sort of sings. So it’s a plus and minus kind of name.

Anyway, here’s a picture I keifed off the site. I like it because it looks like they’re grooving out to some 60’s psychedelic tunes, doesn’t it? But I think they’re being electrocuted or something.

All we need now is a Bugaloo reunion.

Esteban has incensed me with new performance anxiety. Apparently, last night, Joel sat and read aloud 56 entries of my diary. To Esteban’s whole group of friends. And there’s some kind of male thing going on here… something I don’t quite comprehend.

And Esteban is to blame. He told Joel about the diary and gave him the link. Why I have no idea. But now I feel this insane urge to censor myself. I hate that. I hate that to no end. I refuse to do that.

And that Joel bastard didn’t even sign my guestbook. If you’re going to read 56 entries of someone’s diary, at least sign their guestbook! It’s diary etiquette, people.

Grrrr. Joel’s going down. Oh yes. He is so going down.

I still have the weird alumninum taste of snot sliding down the back of my throat. I am terribly tired. But how is this for nice: one of my team members went out at lunch and got me chicken soup (and it was POURING outside!) and also took my late hours. So I could leave and go home and sleep. Which I’m trying to but have injested too much caffeine trying to keep myself awake to work. Ah, the irony.

One of the Wap Fairy gifts exploded on Carissa’s fridge. In the middle of the night.

Thus, the Wap Fairy was forced to send out a public service announcement regarding the dangers of improper Wap storage. And letting people know that their Wappy goodness had the possibility of exploding. Just a slight possibility.

And I now am left with this tremendous guilt knowing that they slept through the night as wap dried on their counter, down their fridge, all over their floor.

I only wish that had happened to Joel.

No, I don’t, because I adore his wife Cheri and I somehow sense that she’d be the one to clean the mess up. I don’t have proof in this matter, but I somehow sense it. People who don’t sign guestbooks most likely will not clean up exploded wappy goodness.

I’m too wonky to write, I think. Did I really talk about my secret fear that Emeril is a vampire yesterday? And the Viagra thing today. What was that about? It makes no sense.

My head feels as though it is a watermelon filled with Ny-quil and cotton.

Must go lie down and sleep strange sleep.

Esteban just ran to the grocery store to purchase some Chicken & Stars soup and Zesta crackers for me. Then he made it and brought it over to me. Man, that Esteban is so awesome sometimes! These people bringing me soup today are making me get all teary-eyed.

Here’s a picture of Joel at the party. Please make fun of him willy nilly. That’s the harmonica-playing Phil in the background (with the striped shirt).

Not tired enough to eat my own vomit, though

I somehow think that somewhere there is an official record of everything you ever do. And there are little statisticians who rate everything. You know, Most Embarassing Moments, Best 10 Kisses Ever, Jobs I Would Have Been Great At, etc. I don’t know who these statisticians are, but I’m certain that somewhere, someone’s keeping track.

And in the Top Ten Worst Nights of Sleep Weetabix Ever Received, last night was most likely at least #4 or #5 on that list. (The number 1 spot is reserved for the night we spent camping at Manitowish Waters when it was so cold, it kept waking us up and our tent leaked so much, we discovered what possessions of ours could, in the event of an emergency landing, be possibly used as a floatation device.)

Sometime between ‘Fear Factor’ and ‘Jackass’ last night, I developed the most feared sucky disease there is’. The summer cold. My nose is doing it’s impression of Niagra Falls. Or maybe Viagra Falls. Hmmm. That didn’t really make sense but I’m going to have to work that joke in somewhere, sometime. Viagra Falls. That’s pretty funny. To me anyway. But then, I’m doped up on cold medication, and I find mouse pads funny. Like feminine protection for mice. Get it? Huh? You know? Pads! Um. Ok.

Anyway, my nose did not stop running. And I couldn’t get to sleep until 1 o’clock this morning. Then Esteban came home and woke our noisy cat Chelsea, who then proceeded to ‘Mrow’ and ‘Mraaaaa!’ for an hour until she had been appeased with furious petting. He spoils her way too much. She is completely quiet when I go to bed, but when Esteban comes to bed, she knows it’s party time. You see, she knows that Mama Weetabix is a beyotch and won’t pet her. Stop looking at me like that. If you had to deal with a cat who is constantly meowing, you’d learn to ignore her pathetic attempts for attention as well.

Fine, Esteban appeases the Red Menace known as Chelsea. I could not stop shaking so I got up and put on my college sweatshirt over my pajamas and took an Advil Sinus so I could stop stuffing sodden tissues up my nostril to absorb the snot. Half an hour later when the drugs took effect, I was able to fall back asleep.

An hour later, a huge thunderstorm hit. Boom! Crash! Pow! At one point, I counted seven distinct police/fire/ambulance sirens speeding somewhere near our house. That subsided around 4:30 a.m. this morning and I managed to fall back asleep around 5:00 a.m., to be woken at 6:00 a.m. to go to work.

And I’m working 4 ten-hour shifts this week, which means I won’t be home until 7:30 tonight. And I only have four Ricola Cherry Mint cough drops. And they’re sticky because they’re leftover from winter.

I love my fucking life.

Last night on ‘Jackass’, I watched a man make an omelet by eating the raw ingredients and then regurgitate them back out and cook them in a skillet. Then he ate it, after it reached 160 degrees. And a warning played across the screen stating that the government has declared 160 degrees to be the ‘safe’ temperature.

Does it disturb anyone else that the government has regulated how one may eat their own vomit?

The people on ‘Jackass’ misspelled ‘omelet’ last night. I’m not the only one with spelling Alzheimer’s disease.

Let’s kick it up a notch and get naked!

You know a fun game?

Get a bunch of your wacky friends together and take off all your clothes.

Then get in your car and drive around. You can only put on clothes that you find on the side of the road. It’s best if everyone isn’t the same size. That way, no one fights over the size 10 dress on Main Street or the 32 waist jeans on Hwy 12 or the single pink Chuck Taylor’s hanging from the phone line along County GV. The first person fully clothed wins.

It works best in daylight. It’s easier to see the clothes that way.

Try it.

Or not.

Emeril Lagasse is getting a sitcom this fall.

I think he’s a vampire. Seriously. It’s classic. That freaky skin. The weird dark hair. The scary lips and rat-like eyes. I haven’t exactly figured the garlic issue into the equation but I’m working on it.

And the beast shall reveal itself…. BAM!!!!

“How can I turn these crustaceans into minions who will carry out my evil bidding?”

Overheard:

“I’m clenching my butt cheeks very tightly.”

“So?”

“It makes my wanger jump up and down.”

I do believe in Wap Fairies… I do, I do, I do believe in Wap Fairies!

Today, I overslept and then tried to write yesterday’s entry but then Esteban required that I stop so we could go wish his parents, Ward and June, a happy Father’s Day. However, we had not had the fore-thought to actually purchase a Father’s Day present, so I sent Esteban off to the Man Mall (aka Sear’s) to purchase a gift certificate and then I went to the Card Store to buy the requisite card to go along with it. Because card stores apparently give men hives.

I don’t really understand the whole “Greeting Card” phenomenon. Does anyone really tear up at a pre-printed card? Does anyone say “Oh, wow, you got me a card with fish on it and you know how much I like to fish! That’s so personal and thoughtful! Aww shucks!”. I don’t think so.

The funniest card I ever got was at our wedding. It was a card made on someone’s computer and it basically said something like “We know you’re only opening this card to see if there’s money in it.”

They knew us that well. Because it was completely true.

Anything that starts out “On your special Day” or “For a wonderful daughter” is just cheese. Do you ever refer to your sister as “Wonderful Sister”? Nope. Thought not. If it was truly personalized, you’d address the card as “Skank Butt” or “Loser” or “Emotionally Distant Biological Father” or something like that. And the inside would say something like “You don’t suck that often, and I’d trade you in for a new digital camera in a heartbeat, but I hope at least you have a good day and please don’t forget to pay me back that $50 you owe me, OK?”

And what’s the deal with them costing $5? A card should cost less than 1/10th the price of the gift. If you can’t find a card for that price, then you used to just be considered a cheap bastard. Now, it’s because the fat cats at Hallmark and American Greetings are mind-fucking us into believing that our lives will not have meaning without their canned sentiment and emotional blackmail.

(Now I’m envisioning the kind of threats I’m going to get from Hallmark on this. The card would have a picture of a noose and maybe a guy’s foot stuck in cement and the inside would read “Thinking of You” or something like that.)

When you care enough to tell someone to rot in hell.

Spent some time with the ‘rentals and picked up the remains of the party paraphenalia. Ward and June cleaned out the wap cooler, which pretty much guarantees them sainthood in my book. I was certain that I had permanently dyed the inside red. Why was the cooler able to get shiny white, yet my hands still have the appearance that I gave the big Kool-Aid pitcher guy a hand job. And have you noticed the fixation I have with sexual encounters fictional product spokesmen? First Chef Boy-Ar-Dee and now Kool-Aid man. I’m not saying anything, but I have a date with the Michelin Man tomorrow. I hear he’s steel-belted. Don’t tell Esteban, ok?

Today, I was the Wap fairy. In case you didn’t have a white-trash childhood, the Wap Fairy is a mystical creature who sports around Wisconsin, delivering home-mixed brew to all of the good alcoholics and D.T. sufferers in the land. Merrily, she makes her way in her trusted white sports car, bringing happiness and red-stained lips to happy and mean drunks alike.

No. Really.

I traversed nearly the entire county today, bringing people bottles of leftover wap. The garage where we had the party smelled as though the Keebler Elves had been working all night on their illegal distillery. That is, if they said to hell with the whole cookie thing.

And to put me in the Wap Fairy mood, I played my mix cd that I had made for the party. Man. I have some awesome albeit eclectic taste. But I enjoyed it.

Here’s the 2 cd mix, in a random order:

* Sweet Jane (a Lou Reed cover): Cowboy Junkies

* Been Caught Stealing: Jane’s Addiction

* American Music: Violent Fems

* Keep Them Separated: Offspring

* Born to Run: Bruce Springsteen

* Friends in Low Places: Garth Brooks (appeasing the country crowd at the party)

* Wendy (a Beach Boys cover): The Descendants

* Groove is in the Heart: DeeLite

* Rock Lobster: B-52s

* Theme from Shaft: Isaac Hayes

* Lady Marmalade: Labelle(not the Christina ‘More of a Ho than the person I’m singing about’ Aguilera version, either!)

* Boys of Summer: Don Henley

* Margaritaville (live version): Jimmy Buffet

* What I am: Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians

* Do You love Me?: the Contours

* Closer to Fine: the Indigo Girls

* The Old Apartment (live version): Barenaked Ladies

* Ants Marching: Dave Matthews Band

* Happy Boy: Beat Farmers

* A little Respect: Erasure

* She Sells Sanctuary: The Cult

* Rocking the Tardis (Doctor Who megamix)

* Ana Ng: They Might Be Giants

* Can’t Hardly Wait: The Replacements

* Peek A Boo: Siouxsie and the Banshees

* The Oompa Loompa song

* Jay from Mallrats saying “Snootchie Bootches”

Do you know that it is practically impossible to drive the speed limit when listening to Jane’s Addiction? Try it. It’s impossible. I was going 85 mph when I realized it was happening.

The car just loves those crazy dogs barking, I tell you.

I think Jimmy Buffet is reaching retirement age. I noticed that the live version of Margaritaville is slightly different now. Instead of looking for “a shaker of salt”, it’s now “a shaker of Salt Sense” and the “booze in the blender” has been replaced by Metamucil.

Ok, lame joke. I know. But it made me laugh, so there.

At the party yesterday, I was explaining to my friend Erika (who was my best friend in junior high and knows how twisted I am) about the Naked Porn Twin, except I didn’t call her that. I just said “I found a woman on the internet who looks like me, but she’s naked.”

Erika raised one eyebrow and said “Identical Hand Twin?”

Exactly. Exactly!

By the way, Erika just got a mention here and that’s pretty cool!

The party menu comprised of brats, hamburgers, cake, chips, and booyah. If you do not know what booyah is, here goes:

First you lead several chickens to a vat of boiling water and then get them to jump in. Then you bring over several cows and try to get them to jump in the pot too. As cows are somewhat smarter than chickens, you’ll probably only get one cow or maybe just it’s tail. Then you lead a bunch of vegetables to the pot and put them in as well. As vegetables are only slightly dumber than the chickens, this shouldn’t be too terribly hard. Then you boil them until nothing is discernable from anything else. Enjoy.

Who’s the fat pretty chick who’s a hit with all the hicks? Weetabix…. damn right.

Ok, you might want to prepare yourself for this entry as I suspect it will be a long one. Yesterday was quite a day.

First off, Esteban and I awoke and two hours later we got out of bed. No, stop thinking dirty thoughts! The breeze was coming in through the windows and it was that warm/cool kind of breeze that makes you love summer, so we just stayed in bed and talked about what we had to do that day.

The plan was that we would go out to breakfast (as I was craving a cheese and something omelet) then come home. Esteban was then going to mow the lawn (because the neighbors have been losing their toddlers in our lawn currently and it is gaining momentum on becoming the most hated lawn in the neighborhood, the title of which is owned by the “For Sale” garage-turned-house 600 sq. foot piece of shit up the street. Then Esteban was going to do the dishes. On his own motivation. Seriously. I know. This was turning out to be a great day.

I, on the other hand, was playing with getting a manicure, but I for sure needed to do some laundry, wash out the cooler for the later BirthWeek Spectacular’s drinking enjoyment of Wapatui, stop at the store and pick up my asthma inhaler, a volleyball pump, and some sunscreen (because the current “fucking red face” medicine makes me extremely sensitive to the sun) and also run over to Esteban’s parents and set up the volleyball net and make the Wap starter.

Phew. And we were going to do all of this in four and a half hours.

So we drove across town to my favorite breakfast place, where I promptly ordered the lunch special of roast beef (I know I was hungry for an omelet earlier, but this looked better. This is why I drive Esteban crazy, though).

We ate and then began to drive home, but then we thought we’d take the short detour drive near the bay, which would take us 15 minutes out of our way, but would be a lovely drive. I suspect that this could have been a procrastination measure, but I’m not sure. You decide.

It was at the beginning of this detour that I made a statement that I felt like sticking my bare legs out the window. Esteban says “Go ahead”. Now I would never do that. It just seems so juvenile, so tacky. It’s the wack kind of thing you see low-class people doing. And then my grandmother stopped talking inside my brain and I said “Why the hell not?”, so I stuck my legs out the window and laid across the bench seat, with my head in Esteban’s lap, bare legs hanging out the window.

It was a beautiful thing.

And when I declared that the window weatherstripping was hurting my legs, Esteban dug through the garbage in his car and found a cushioned FedEx mailer for me to put under my legs. He’s such a fabulous recycler.

It was looking to be the highpoint of my day. I seriously recommend driving in the country with your legs hanging out the window. I know understand the “Golden Retriever” mentality much better now.

Of course, Esteban needed to ruin the purity of the moment by making a suggestion that I face down instead, facing into his lap. You knew that was coming.

Then a truck full of three guys passed by. I only have this from Esteban’s account because all I could see was the tree canopy and up Esteban’s nostrils, but he said that all three of their heads turned in unison and they scoped my legs hanging out the window. And apparently tried to see if they could see up my shorts.

Yep. The highpoint of my day.

We continue to drive, forgetting our many responsibilities, and I sit up for awhile because the blood is starting to cut off in my legs from pressing on the window so long. Plus, a big nasty bug hit me in the ankle and when you’re going 55 miles per hour, not only is it disgusting, it hurts like hell.

Then we pass a biker bar on the highway. We see they have a live band there, playing to an open field with two teenage boys in it. Esteban remarkes “Wow, concert for two.” and I notice that the harmonica player is waving frantically at us as we drive by, so I said “Look, they’re trying to flag people down off the highway!” And the light bulb then went off for Esteban. You see, we KNEW that harmonica player, so let’s go stop and have a beer and watch him for a little while, shall we?

Um. Ok.

We stop and then find out that it’s $10 a person to sit in this field and watch Phil’s band play. But you get all the free tepid and foamy beer you can drink! Esteban does not think that paying $20 to stop and say ‘hi’ to someone is all that unreasonable, so we do. We walk around to the field and that’s when we realize that there are no seats. No chairs. No benches. We stand there for awhile, both of us in our shorts and sandals, and then I notice that this is no ordinary field that we are standing in. No, we are standing on what is possibly the Largest Anthill in Wisconsin. Who knew that biker bars were such fans of bugs? Was it some kind of karmic balance for all the insects they wiped off their teeth and sunglasses? Who knows.

I bust over to a lonely picnic table I notice and plop my ass on it. Then I realize that picnic table was held together with exactly two bolts. So I sit cautiously, but Esteban is afraid to sit because of the shakiness of the table. However, a barfly from the bar comes out and she plops her ass on the table and proceeds to groove to the music. Shaking the table as she did her strange table dancing. I tried to explain that she could dance amongst the ants on the ground and show her appreciation more fully, but she could only tell me some long story about how her “baby’s daddy is in jail for robbery” and how her “other baby’s daddy is in prison for a long time” and she’s not going to waste her freedom being repressed or something. Plus, she explained that someone had dared her to drink most of a bottle of Apple Pucker so she was feeling a bit under the weather. She explained this as she sipped on her glass of foam. I couldn’t exactly understand most of her drunken slurs, but I nodded politely, because that’s how my drunken mama raised me. Drunks like polite listeners.

Our appearance in the field has actually doubled the audience of the band. They were playing on a “stage” that was constructed by lining a flatbed trailer up next to a semi trailer with a hole cut in the side of it. Very classy. To exit the stage, the performers had to walk down the loading ramp of one of the trailers. I’m not making this up.

Phil’s band was very good. Not $20 good, but very good. We had conversations with Phil, he over the microphone, us shouting from the field. He welcomed the other members of the audience (the sons of the lead guitar player, we later learned) to wish me a happy birthday. After one song, I found I was the only one clapping and the drummer yelled “Thanks Weetabix. Patron of the Arts!”

By this time, we could actually drink our beer. It was so foamy when you tapped it that you had to let it sit and defoam. However, I look at it as a cultural thing. We were privvy to the wicked underbelly of the Ant Farming community. We were one with them.

In between sets (like how I threw in a little industry talk for you there?), we talked to Phil off the stage. He introduced me to the band. The lead guitar guy said “How old are you? 22? 23?” and when I said “30”, he did this weird scope manuever and I think he checked out my booty. In a very obvious kind of way. It was a little disturbing. But it put my “scope” count to four at that point, so it was all good.

Does anyone else ever notice that they get scoped out more when they look like hell? I looked like hell. Esteban told me that it looked like I hadn’t brushed my hair when I got up. My shirt had a spot on it. I had a big fly schmear on my ankle. It always happens though. I met one of my college boyfriends when I was sweaty, with greasy hair and no makeup. I got hit on regularly in England where I had no curling iron (my hair at that time required a curling iron) and no makeup. Does it make you look more approachable? Is it more of a natural look? Could someone explain that to me? Because I’m clueless.

Then we busted out of there, because now we were screwed. Our timeframe was seriously diminishing. Now, we barely had time to do the essentials like showering and stuff.

So we head home. I whip out the ironing board to iron my shirt and then find that my favorite shirt has turned grey in the laundry. Basement funk strikes again! Instead, I pull out one of my rhinestoney shirts and iron it. Ok, so I looked like an inbred. But it was my party, so I’ll look as inbred as I want to.

Oh great. Now I’ve got Leslie Gore running through my head.

Anywhoo, we scurry over to Ward and June’s house and prep for the party. We get there and find that June has severely wounded herself attempting to remove the wax paper off a frozen hamburger patty and must be taken to the hospital. Don’t ask me how this happened. I later had to ply her with several glasses of alcohol before she would admit to this much.

I made the Wap starter, which is easy but very messy. Here’s a Weetabix value-added extra:

How to make Wap starter: take a large cooler (we use a red one… it makes life simpler) Dump in four pounds of sugar, six packets of red Kool-Aid mix (the little packets without sugar added) and 10 2-liter bottles of white soda (such as 7-up or cheap stuff). For ice, freeze several half-gallon ice cream pails with water and fruit slices. This way it stays colder longer and doesn’t water it down. Then mix in white grain alcohols of your choice (this party threw in Tequila, rum, vodka, whiskey, and Malibu). Our rule is that if you bring a bottle of “ingredient”, you get that bottle back, filled with leftover wap. Aged wap has been known to cure herpes, grow hair on a billiard ball, and remove unsightly moles.

So Ward and June left to go to the hospital and leave us to attend to the party. Which was fine because everyone decided that they would be fashionably late. We received the first guest at 4:30 (invitations said 4:00 pm) and the second guest at 5:00. The bulk of the guests began arriving at the 5:15-5:30 mark, so word to the wise: schedule your party an hour and half earlier than when you’d like people to arrive.

Unless maybe all your friends aren’t rude bastards, like mine.

June’s finger turned out to be bruised but unbroken. The party was great fun. I received some great gifts as well as some “funny” gifts. Yes. They were a riot.

The funniest thing was that someone gave me a blinking “I’m 30” button and when they gave it to me to put on, I accidentally dropped it on the cement and it broke into a million pieces. They taped it back together, though, and I was forced to wear it and it almost gave me epilepsy. I still have a headache.

The only yucky part of the whole thing is that my mother came and BROUGHT MY 11-YEAR-OLD BROTHER. Yes. That’s right. After Weetabix makes this big stink about not bringing children to this ADULT party, her own mother shoots her in the ass by bringing an 11-year-old. I asked her about it and she said “Well, we’ll only stay until you open presents.” her eyes lingering on the 30-gallon cooler of wappy goodness. Um, right Mom. She then proceeded to drink two gallons of wap. My brother was cool about it though. For the most part, he parked himself in front of Ward and June’s jumongous television and watched porn and the Crocodile Hunter. My mother was busying herself by hitting on every cute guy at the party. That’s my mom. She’s Mrs. Roper sans Stanley and the funky hairdo.

The problem with my mom is that she’s very pretty. She’s often compared to Cher. Not that that’s a problem, but things really affect her strangely and she’s always trying to prove something. For instance, Ann-Margret is coming to town in September and I offered to take her to see the show. My mom would like to see the show, but she doesn’t like Ann-Margret because she’s 60 years old and looks better than she does at 50. I said “hey, she’s 60 and she looks better than me at 30!” “Well, doesn’t that make you mad?” she said. “No, why would it?” “I don’t know… it bother’s me,” she said.

Whatever.

Needless to say, my mother and little brother were there until the end of the party. So now the COUPLESWITHCHILDREN are undoubtedly cheesed off because I’m a big double-standard girl. No. I’m not. I wasn’t happy about it either. But then, doesn’t everyone’s family find some way to embarrass you?

So, the party ended around 9ish, because some of us were supposed to go and sing at this bar at 10. I packaged up the remaining wap with Scott, who is this stereotypical computer geek guy, with big glasses and tiny build. But Scott’s very sweet. For instance, after our wedding, my wedding dress got stepped on by a drunken reveler and some of the bustle latches broke. Scott carried my train for me until I left, making little self-conscious jokes about it like “Great, does this mean I’m like a bridesmaid now?”. He always acts embarassed about it, but I just adore him for that.

Bottling the wap is a very hands-on process. One must submerge the empty bottles in the drink, then stand them up and tap them off by pouring the drink in. Scott, engineer that he is, rigged up a funnel out of a cup, which made the process much faster. When we were almost done, it occurred to me that the way I was bending over the cooler, he could totally see down my shirt. Yep, the girls were there, beckoning seductively to all to see.

So I asked him, “Scott, can you completely see down my shirt right now?”. I think I was getting a little drunk from the wap which was entering my bloodstream through my hands, because I KNOW that any guy who is asked that question will respond in the negative. Because if he’s stupid and says “Yes”, the boobies might be then taken away or obscured from view. It’s a dumb question to ask.

But Scott, in his honesty, says “I’m trying not to look but I appreciate your attempt to flash me.” And I get the feeling that he meant that. From the bottom of his heart.

Scope count: 5.

We bottled up the rest of the booze and then Scott took them out to the yard and hosed them off so that they wouldn’t be sticky. I went and washed my hands and amazingly, after all of the red splashing wap, I did not even get a single spot on my white outfit. Can you believe it? I know. I can’t either. However, my hands look as though I’ve been playing the Lady Macbeth part in summer stock for months. Or eating a lot of pistachios.

Off to the bar, where we find that there’s been a mix up and they already had a DJ there. No singing. Which was fine, because I had this red-finger thing going on. But the DJ makes fun of me showing up to perform even though he’s there already. And this pisses Scott off. He shouts at the DJ “Hey, leave her alone!” and proceeds to shout obscenities to the DJ.

You’ve got to give it to Scott. He’s like a little Bantam Rooster who will peck you to death if you piss him off. And now that he had a glimpse of the fun twins, he’s willing to protect my honor with his life. By any means necessary.

Apparently, to appease Bantam Scott, the DJ then announces to the crowd that it’s my birthday and that everyone in the bar should buy me a shot. Oh my. In case anyone’s keeping track, I don’t really drink. The whole day, I had a half a glass of wap to test the mix and that was it. But that’s how we party in Wisconsin. Ooh, it’s your birthday, drink some alcohol. Oh, getting married? Have a shot! Oh, getting divorced? Shot on me! Does anyone wonder why we have the highest per capita number of alcoholics in the country? Oh, yeah, we are number one in the country! Let me buy you a shot!

So yet again, we were at peace with the “friends in low places” crowd. I had this tremendous urge to sell our home, buy a trailer, put our Pontiac 6000 up on cement blocks and start watching Nascar. Maybe put a big “#3” decal in the back window of my Monte. Maybe a “Calvin Peeing” sticker in the window of Esteban’s truck.

The black Nascar t-shirt is the Metallica t-shirt of the new millenium.

Remember Markus, he of flowering trees and camping quips? He brought me a pack of double stuffed Oreos and three trays of Sushi.

Can you believe how sweet he is?

I have the greatest guy friends. Really.

Anyone seen my support hose? Mmmmhmmm?

I think I scared Kim V. today.

We were discussing people we don’t like and who now don’t like me.

So Kim then mentions that I shouldn’t be too upset because I’ve been fighting with these two women for the last two years.

Um. Excuse me?

And that’s when I lost control. That’s when I said, “Er… no. I haven’t been fighting with them. I’ve been polite to them. I’ve been talking to them. I’ve been the picture of charm and grace. I have not been fighting with them. Because if they think I’ve been fighting with them, let them come see me and I will show them what fighting is all about, because obviously they don’t know what fighting is. They have not seen fighting apparently because if they start shit with me, I will show them fucking fighting.”

Silence.

She gave me a stunned “deer in headlights” look and that’s when I realized that I had my hand on my hip, and the hip was cocked out of the side, and my neck had loosened and was now doing a little bobbing thing and the finger… the pointy finger… well, let me tell you… it was up making it’s presence known.

That’s right. When I get my dander up, I go all “gangsta chick”.

It’s scary. I don’t blame Kim from being scared. You never know what’s going to happen. And if I start doing the “mmmmhmmm” Sling-blade thing, just watch it. You don’t want to stick around. It will be bad.

And really, they don’t know what fighting is about. I’ve been very nice to them. I don’t LIKE the way they’ve treated certain people and thus, no longer like them personally, but I HAVEN’T been fighting.

Not yet.

Got to see the new issue of Grogan’s Fantasy Football Analyst” today. Hysterical! Very funny! Oh, and the football stats are good too. But the article is da bomb. You must pick up a copy. It has a cover picture of Donovan McNabb (the interview of which knocked my article off of “cover feature” status) and the “Lola” article on the back page is quite cute.

And I got paid. WOOOHOO!!

Tonight as I was driving home, I achieved a strange milestone.

I saw a man outside mowing the lawn. Wearing shorts, black socks and sandals.

And for the first time in my life, I did not think to myself “Oh my god, why must the fashion victims continue to foister upon themselves these stereotypes” or something along those lines.

Instead, I inherently understood that he must have just gotten home from work. He must have taken off his business suit and shoes and threw on shorts and sandals. But why dirty another pair of socks? So he kept the black ones on.

And that’s how most people get sucked into cults. They first try to get you when you’re beaten down and feeling bruised (as I was immediately after work today) and then they try to make you see their side of things. So that you say, “Ok, that makes sense.”

It’s started already.

If you see me gardening with curlers in my hair, wearing a flowered muumuu and dark brown nylon knee-hi’s, you have my permission to club me over the head with a J.Jill catalog.

I was telling my fabulously beautiful friend and hairdresser Staci about my rosacea and she asks “What’s that?” and all I could blurt out was “I’ve got the fucking red face disease!”.

Which pretty much sums it up right there, doesn’t it?
